Life is going well for Hana Du Rose. It seems as though everything is perfect in her new life as the wife of the head of the English department of Waikato Presbyterian School for Boys and the mother of a beautiful six month old daughter, Phoenix. Hana has settled into married life and adores her handsome husband and child, relishing this fortunate second chance at love.
A series of unexpected encounters conspire to rock her emotional world and cause mayhem in Hana’s life, dragging her past into her present life and causing friction with Logan. Hana’s former life in England suddenly refuses to stay there, seeking her out and forcing her to face a number of issues which she believed she had left behind, old resentments and conflicts that she would rather not face now. A spirit of death hangs over the city and the discovery of a body at the boarding house will complicate matters and implicate someone dear to her, as her relationship with her policeman son implodes dreadfully under the pressure. But its grasping fingers will not be satisfied with one death and Hana will be floored by the loss of someone close to her. As always, life in the New Zealand city of Hamilton is never dull, casting its rich tapestry of influence over the inhabitants of the prestigious private boys’ school. Yet nobody could have foreseen the dreadful outcome of a harmless day out, which will threaten the security of the little Du Rose family forever.

Married and bringing up four children during her twenties and thirties, K T Bowes reserved her storytelling for them.

She emigrated to New Zealand in 2006 with her family on a one way ticket. They arrived with just one suitcase each. The international bestselling Hana Du Rose Mysteries began shortly afterwards, hammered out on an old laptop used for Skyping family back home.

Since then, she has published more than twenty five books ranging from women's literature through teen series, to a fantasy trilogy.

The author has given interviews to That's Life Magazine and the BBC during her writing career. Each of her first in series novels are free to readers on all digital platforms.

K T Bowes has a passion for folk art and renovating wooden furniture. Her work as an archivist often appears within story lines. After two significant falls, she gave up horse riding but often has a guest horse or two in the paddock. She lives above the city of Hamilton, close to the Waikato River and the Hakarimata Ranges. Many of her novels are based in New Zealand, but some transport the reader back to England and the Midlands where she grew up.

Oh Hana! So strong, but so fragile! Hana moves from one tragedy to another. Finding unexpected happiness and dismayed when others are sad. A difficult woman with so many graces. Easy to love. Headstrong and always trying to do the right thing. Precious to Logan and others who know her. Read this series from the beginning to understand.

This book had me in tears, as it has a strong theme of mortality from the very beginning. While it still did have the funny moments that I've come to expect in Ms Bowes' books, this story had far more seriousness to it in keeping with the sombre events.

I was fascinated by how this book wasn't about fear of death so much as in being prepared for it, and making peace with oneself and those who will be left behind, should the untoward happen. As a widow, Hana had more insight than most into how suddenly you can lose those you love and it certainly shines through in her thoughts and actions in this book.

Ms Bowes certainly built suspense throughout the whole book, with an ending that will surprise many. Unfortunately, having been in Mark's situation in the past, I recognised the early hints and dreaded that I knew what the ending would be. No, I won't spoil this book for you - it's well worth the read, along with the rest of the series.

Speaking of which - make sure you've bought the next book when you purchase this one. You'll want to read it immediately afterwards, just like I did.

Five emotional stars.

The Past and Present Converge

One Heartbeat, by K. T. Bowes, is the latest installment in Waikato Presbyterian School for Boys series. Hana is happy in her new life. Her baby Phoenix is now six months old, and her husband Logan is in charge of the English Department.

Hana's life takes an unexpected turn when she meets the eyes of a man in a fast food place. She thought the man had died twenty-six years ago. The encounter shocks her to the core.

Hana wants to turn her back on the man. Maihi, Hana's friend and neighbor, tells Hana she has a stained heart. And now, with the visit of a man who had been thought long dead, Hana may have the chance to remove the stains. Logan tells her the past continues to haunt Hana because it is unfinished.

With other surprising events, Hana's life becomes even more complicated. She must learn to accept the past's place in her present, as well as learn forgiveness.

I enjoyed writing this book very much and found it very difficult to stop. I worried about overextending this series, but it has been so well received that I have decided to do another one after this and see how I feel.
