Anna Katharine Green

Anna Katharine Green (1846-1935) was an American poet and novelist. She was one of the first writers of detective fiction in America and distinguished herself by writing well plotted, legally accurate stories. Born in Brooklyn, New York, her early ambition was to write romantic verse, and she corresponded with Ralph Waldo Emerson. When her poetry failed to gain recognition, she produced her first and best known novel, The Leavenworth Case (1878). She became a bestselling author, eventually publishing about 40 books. She was in some ways a progressive woman for her time-succeeding in a genre dominated by male writers-but she did not approve of many of her feminist contemporaries, and she was opposed to women's suffrage. Her other works include A Strange Disappearance (1880), The Affair Next Door (1897), The Circular Study (1902), The Filigree Ball (1903), The Millionaire Baby (1905), The House in the Mist (1905), The Woman in the Alcove (1906), The House of the Whispering Pines (1910), Initials Only (1912), and The Mystery of the Hasty Arrow (1917).

Detective Ebenezer Gryce makes sleuthing spinster Amelia Butterworth an offer she can’t refuse: a chance to investigate a second case, this time in the Berkshires. It’s a delight to see the pair wheedle and manipulate each other!

In this sequel to That Affair Next Door, Miss Butterworth — as nosy and determined as ever, although more humble than before — pushes herself onto the children of a dear, departed schoolmate of hers so as to be onsite to look around. And she does as fine a job as any policeman! I really enjoyed this slyly humorous novel even if author Anna Katherine Green’s denouement was completely unbelievable. I docked the book a star for the silly ending, but the novel was still a delight, and I don’t regret reading this funny, incisive gem at all. I look forward to reading the final one in the series, The Circular Study.

Unconvincing red herrings, badly-resolved mystery. The extra star is for Amelia Butterworth herself, who is really a character very well drawn and almost an unreliable narrator as regards her own feelings and qualities - she's well-bred and good at concealing her real thoughts but almost always reveals to us what it is that she chooses not to tell.

Terima kasih! Baru buku ini yang selesai dibaca *ups*.

Very interesting read, it kept me quite hooked. I really enjoyed the writing and Amelia Butterworth's point of view; her very Victorian and ever so dignified personality was really entertaining, yet she was also independent and resourceful, sharp despite her occasional mistakes. Although he was more in the background, I felt that she and Mr. Gryce were quite complementary and worked nicely with each other overall. I enjoyed the mystery, the way the first part of it unfolded in close quarters and the attention given to the Knollys family, their reactions and psychology. The story flirted with the ghost story genre in a way that was quite clever and served the plot well. I also liked the fact that there turned out to be two mysteries, and yet in the end, they were quite connected; the twists and pacing kept the reader engaged. The resolution might be the part I least enjoyed, the criminal's motives were rather too vague to be guessed and the detail of the facts wasn't the focus of the writers—it was mainly just finding out who the culprit was, through a few clues and a bit of chance for the main characters, a gut feeling mostly for the reader. However, the way that was carried out remained interesting. Very nice book overall!

Uh…Okay… So I guess ensuring family or personal pride makes everything right, even if it leads to rather unorthodox methods of disposing of dead bodies. But personally, I found that just a bit more offensive to common sensibilities than the alternative, but then I’m obviously not as interested in appearances as every single character in this book. That would have to be my least favorite part of all of Green’s novels, and this book has more than the usual amount of fake sensibilities. Characters act in such wildly unlikely ways that I personally think that it weakens the whole book. This book would have made a wonderful short story, if you could have cut out all of the melodramatics. I just couldn’t make myself believe that anyone, ever, would act like these characters. It was okay, but not great.

Amelia Butterworth
Detective Ebenezer Gryce
Locale: The Berkshires of western Massachusetts

Synopsis: In New York City, Detective Ebenezer Gryce mentions to Amelia Butterworth a puzzling case in the Berkshires of western Massachusetts, on the Albany border - about 90 miles north of them. In a small village, four men have disappeared over the course of five years, all while walking alone along a certain country lane, now known as Lost Man's Lane.

Amelia cannot wait to go investigate, using as an excuse a visit to the daughters of her late childhood friend Althea Burroughs Knollys. Amelia arrives by train to find the two daughters, Loreen Knollys and Lucetta Knollys, living in an immense decaying mansion, and none too pleased with her arrival. The house is also occupied by their lazy do-nothing brother William Knollys and the maid/cook, Hannah.

Gryce has told Amelia that Obadiah Trohm is an ally, and is in the confidence of the police. A strange woman, Mother Jones, occupies a shack opposite. A fifth disappearance, that of Silly Rufus, occurs. The Knollys are intent on keeping Amelia out of the house in the daytime, suggesting something nefarious is occurring there.

Review: Well, this book has - or tries to be - everything. It is a mystery, a ghost story, a horror story, and even a romance combined. As I read along, more and more mysteries are introduced: missing men, a ghostly carriage which is only seen at night, a missing girl, a coffin being snuck about. For a long time, nothing is resolved and strange things only added to the growing pile. A page turner for the first 2/3, but I began to wonder how all this stuff could ever be resolved.

As it turns out, the four - no, five - missing men only get a cursory treatment. They are unnamed, dealt with for no apparent motive, and meet their doom in a rather silly way which is revealed at the end. I had expected more depth about the four missing men, but the writer let me down.

Mother Jones is an interesting character and perhaps the best one in the book.

A big deal is made of William Knolly's penchant for vivisection, but fortunately, no details of this are provided and this story line is dropped midway.

The surprising turn at the end attempts to make this a love story (but not for Amelia, who even gets proposed to by two different suitors), and we wind up with a wedding and everybody happy.

*here I am using the language of the writer, noting it is not acceptable usage today.

please read more on my blog, kilas buku

Great Twist

So, that's why I call this novel has a very great twist.

Gw bukan penggemar buku detektif, namun pas baca profil pengarang, gw lumayan kaget. What a remarkable

Suasana rumah tua yg bobrok plus bau apak bangunan tua mampu membuat gw sedikit merinding gak nyaman, sehingga suasana thrilling yg coba dibangun oleh pengarang sangat terasa.

Buku yg lumayan bagus, terjemahannya juga oke. Buat penggemar novel misteri yg ingin merasakan kisah detektif akhir abad ke-18, bolehlah dicoba

Ms. Butterworth's age was confusing me at first ( i think she was in her 20s because she haven't married and yes.. i read the second book first so i think i didn't get the specific infos enough.. but i was very glad that in the middle of the story, the writer was mentioning about ms. butterworth's real age.. it was hard for me to believe bcoz i kept remembering about how fresh and how big was ms butterworth's spirit and energy to solve the case.

so.... ofc, this was my first time to read and review anna katherine green's story. and yess... i was soooo late to read this book ( actually, i felt soo sorry because i bought this book bcoz i found out that one of the biggest OLshop in my country was offering this book for a very (extremly) cheap price.

Love this@@!!
looking forward to another offer of the first book :D

This is my favourite of the Anna K Green books that I've listened to so far. An interesting story (packed with plausible red herrings), an engaging narrator, Miss Amelia Butterworth, and a cast of characters you can believe in all lead to a very satisfying read and clever denouement. I can honestly say that I had no idea what the ending would be till I read it nor how Ms Green would conclude various other mysteries sprinkled in to divert her readers. I always enjoy listening to these Olde Time thrillers with their, to me, archaic language, customs and manners and this was no exception. And, added to the enjoyment, was the fact that my sister, Mary Bard, was the LibriVox reader for this book! All in all, a very enjoyable experience!

Baru pertama kali baca buku karya Anna Katharine Green.

Excellent! For years I've been a big fan of classic mysteries written by British authors in the late 1800s/ early 1900s, but apparently I've been neglecting their equally good American counterparts. Anna Katherine Green created a hilarious and engaging narrator voice, the forerunner of Miss Marple and Amelia Peabody, and stories with great atmosphere and tension. It's often a bit of a shock when she recalls the reader to a setting in New York State after describing a dilapidated country inn or manor that could as easily be in England. I haven't been convinced by her villain's motives, but she has decent plot twists before revealing said motives.

I'm sorry to say this book gets only 2.5 stars from me. I've been reading the Mr. Gryce series in order and loved them all until this book. I was so never so happy to read the word "Epilogue". It was verification that I was finally near the end. I usually like character studies, but this book is mainly a long tedious study of all the mystery suspects in all small village. Also, the writing focuses too much on description, so you'll have no idea where the author is going with the story during the middle of the book. I love Anna Katharine Green, but not "Lost Man's Lane". I wish it had remained lost!

I enjoyed "The Leavenworth Case" and "The Affair Next Door", which feature the spinster sleuth that was a predecessor to Christie's Miss Marple. In this case (the 2nd Butterworth/Ebenezer Gryce mystery), detective Gryce asks Miss Amelia Butterworth if she will assist him in a baffling case of several people who have vanished on a small stretch of country road, between the village and a few rural residences. Miss Butterworth is reluctant until she realizes that among those residents are the daughters and son of a an old school friend. Miss Butterworth invites herself to visit these people and finds herself in a large dilapidated house, strange noises and stranger neighbors, and a mystery surrounding not only the disappearances but the death of her childhood friend.
Unfortunately the setup suggests a more interesting tale than the one delivered. In turn-of-the-century fiction, you expect a certain amount of wordiness, but every incident and every conversation is drawn out so long, and with so little key information, that it becomes tedious. The red herrings are often absurd, the reveal is lackluster and the wrap up is delivered primarily in a long, tedious epilogue.
The highlight is Miss Butterworth herself, whose investigation and call to courage is always shaped by her principles, her morality, sense of decency. And there is a particularly amusing marriage proposal that highlights Green's sense of humor. But there is too little humor, and too much irrelevancy in this installment of the Butterworth/Gryce series.

Started off well and kept my interest throughout. Miss Amelia Butterworth, here in her second tale, goes for an extended visit to the home of an old school pal’s adult children, paying her respects after the death of her friend. Her old pal Detective Gryce looks on from a distance, many red herrings are displayed, ghostly goings-on transpire, and it’s just as delightful as the first book - until the last couple of chapters. The ending is preposterous, everything is flipped on its head, nothing makes sense given the previous thirty-eight chapters.

That said, I’m really happy to be reading these late 19th Century mysteries by a prolific and little-known American author. I’d never heard of Anna Katherine Green till I saw a suggestion on Amazon re a new release of Library of Congress mysteries. The Affair Next Door, Miss Butterworth #1, was included.

Listened to this as an audiobook from Librivox. The reader did an excellent job and I really enjoyed this one!
Anna Katherine Green's writing is very reminiscent of Agatha Christie - often the least suspicious character is the murderer. This book was no exception. (I'm not going to bother to add a spoiler alert - this book is old enough.) I enjoy Amelia Butterworth and have really liked all the books she's been in. Like Christie, Green's books can be a little slow at first, but really draw you in as you go along. The side characters were very interesting and I actually never would have guessed the red herring!

If you're looking for a good old time mystery - pick this one up! Or any of Anna Katherine Green's for that matter.

Another absolutely brilliant mystery! I didn't love this one as much as That Affair Next Door , but it was still very good and suspenseful. I never expected the solution of any of the mysteries to be what they were! As with the other, every time you think you know the answer the story takes an unexpected twist and you're left right back where you started! A highly complex mystery with startling solutions!
