Zombies- as if that wasn’t enough to ruin any girl’s dream of a happily ever after.
Haley Gable has been on the run from Zombies and other evils for almost two years. She is exhausted, cynical and bored. Her overactive brain is ticking away at her sanity and the endless struggle for survival ahead of her seems overwhelming.
Until she meets the Parker brothers.
Now traveling in company with five overprotective brothers and a little girl that has completely stolen her heart, Haley finally feels a breath of relief.
That is until Nelson, the middle brother, decides that Haley is exactly the girl he’s been waiting for.
Panicked by the idea of love and confused about what kind of future any relationship could possibly have when surrounded daily by the looming threat of death, Haley avoids Nelson and all his advances.
When the group finds a solar powered farmhouse, Haley’s defenses are down in light of such an exciting thing as electricity and Nelson takes the opportunity to pursue her. Caught up in Nelson’s charm, Haley has trouble resisting him and everything he offers her.
A temporary fling doesn’t sound so bad, but what Nelson wants from her is something so much stronger than casual, so much deeper than anything she’s ever felt before. Nelson wants all of Haley, every last part. But can she give up her fear and doubt and give him a chance? Will he turn her world of decay into something made of love and hope?
Love and Decay, Episode Four, is the fourth in a novella series in a Dystopian Romance about Zombies, the end of the world and finding someone to share it with.
This story takes place over multiple episodes, with a release date every two weeks. Approximately 20,000 words.
Rachel Higginson is the best-selling author of The Five Stages of Falling in Love, Every Wrong Reason, Bet on Us and The Star-Crossed Series.
She was born and raised in Nebraska, and spent her college years traveling the world. She fell in love with Eastern Europe, Paris, Indian Food and the beautiful beaches of Sri Lanka, but came back home to marry her high school sweetheart. Now she spends her days writing stories and raising five amazing kids.
This is an interesting series. It has humour so things don't get too heavy but at the same time they do loose people and there is violence and killing.
The series is a long one and these main characters stories continue for 3 seasons. There is also a spin off series that deals with the sister later.
There is little intimacy. There is touching, hugging and a few kisses but no sex until much later in the last season. The main 2 characters have love interests but due to the nature of the start of the virus and the constant threat there are no intimate scenes until the end of season 3.
Each season ends on a HFN with an enemy thread running through the whole series. Each episode either ends as HFN with a goal set for the next or at times an immediate threat will run across several episodes. At the time I read these the whole series was on Amazon KU so it was possible to read one after the other or complete in a box set. If you start reading and want to get to a HEA you will need to read the entire 3 seasons. There is the immediate zombie threat which is constant but also the series deals with humanities reaction to survival. Often a bigger threat is the desire for power between the surviving groups and these at times use lack of resources and scientific experimentation to control the main threats. Later in the series there is a love triangle situation of sorts for the heroine. It's not exactly a love triangle but there is a dividing force between the main couple due to the interest from another man. There are no intimate details but there is a kissing scene with the other man, but at the time the main couple are not together. The characters are all very different, they have their flaws but they are college age so when they make mistakes and sometimes they are stupid ones I put it down to youth and although they have learnt survival through experience the threat is constant so it's not easy for them to be sensible all the time. There is a good bit of banter between the group and a great deal of humour. There are some serious issues dealt with too and the main human enemy threat is pretty evil.

I thoroughly enjoyed having another voice to read in Haley, but I must admit I was slow to get into her head. Course, I can't figure out if that was me b/c I was still half asleep this morning, or if it was real. Now I just want to go back and try to catch some glimpses of what I now know of Haley from Reagan's observations in the previous 3 episodes. I was used to the more smart-ass Hayley, and then she opened up into this whole mish-mash of strange qualities. I actually really enjoyed the unique layers that Ms. Higginson added to Haley. I really hadn't given her character that much thought I guess, but she has SO MUCH going on beneath her surface! Now I just want more...more background, more of her. She may have started out slowly this ep, but wow did I love all the new things we learned about her by the end!
And OMG, major wish-fulfillment on the hot sweet romance department!! Nelson and Haley are really quite adorable together, and boy can they generate some steam.
On the action front, it was actually a more slow and introspective episode...not that things didn't go on, but it was nice to have a bit of a breather after the edge of your seat 3rd episode. Course, that doesn't mean they were free from struggles...just challenges of a different kind. And quite cruelly, Ms. Higginson decided we needed a cliffhanger ending...thank the baby jesus that we only have to wait 2 weeks for the next one, b/c otherwise I would be pouting big time.
On a side note -- OMG I loved Harrison this episode!! Like seriously, that kid was HILARIOUS. Makes me want to see a bit more of him to come....he's young, but he's just right there at the edge of adulthood, you know??
Although the switch to Haley's POV threw me off at first, I ended up liking her narration and really enjoying this installment of the serial. This one was a bit more steamy than the others and things between Nelson and Haley seem to be heating up nicely. I did miss some of the action that the first three episodes had, as this one focuses mostly on Haley's relationship with Nelson. But I liked seeing things from Haley's POV and I thought her take on Reagan's reactions to Hendrix and Vaughn was very interesting. I can't wait to see more of them. This is the first one to end on a real cliffhanger, but since it's a serial there's not long to wait for the next episode, I don't mind it much.
I loved this episode for many reasons. First it is from Haley's POV which is a refreshing change at just the right time. Second, we get to learn more about Nelson and King and what they are like. Finally, there is a great cliff hanger! Rachel's writing is at its best in these tv episode like novellas.
This is a spoiler free review on Love & Decay Episodes 1-7
(Giveaway at the end of the review...Giveaway if for the entire first season of Love & Decay, some are not yet released but will be sent to the winner upon release.)
This has been such a great, fun, and exciting read. I am a huge fan of zombies. Have been for as long as I can remember. Now, it is so easy to get your zombie fix so easy...we have The Walking Dead, the millions of movies out there, from World War Z, Zombieland and the classics like Night of the Living Dead but when it comes to getting a zombie fix in a book with the added bonus of a romance...Love & Decay is PERFECT.
Let me start by telling you that while Love & Decay is in fact a series of Novella's, it is also a lot like a show. Every two weeks a new episode is released. They are short quick reads but a packed full of action, romance and lots of gross gooey zombie blood.
Love & Decay reflects around a tight knit family, The Parker's and 2 young ladies. The Parker's are from oldest to youngest, Vaughan, Hendrix, Nelson, Harrison, King and the 8 year old little sister Page. They have survived the past two years by being careful of their surroundings, untrustworthy of others and relying on their awesome survival skills.
Reagan and Haley are two 20 year old girls who seriously kick ass...figuratively and literally. They lost everyone the cared for right in the beginning of the spreading zombie virus (which has a pretty funny start btw). They were not always the zombie ass kicking, bad ass girls they are now. They were the popular cheerleaders, into boys, nice clothes, girly girls. It is seriously pretty damn impressive that they have survived this long.
This whole series or I should probably should say season has been about two groups joining together and forming a bond that is a force to be reckoned with. During a zombie apocalypse, the last thing on anyone's mind is love. Finding the one, living a normal life for a girl right out of high school, well almost out of high school (damn zombies).
Reagan is the main story teller. We got one episode in Haley's POV which was nice, got to get inside her head a bit and learn more about her take on the whole zombie thing and a bit of how she feels about a certain Parker Brother. There is also a couple added members in the later episodes, brother and sister Tyler and Miller. I am now reading episode 8 which happens to be Tyler's POV so I'm hoping that I start to like her more and understand her more.
I really enjoy reading these novella's. They are super fun and you actually picture the scene in front of you. While, yes, there are a bit of editing problems here and there, I don't really pay much attention to it since the author has to be pretty darn busy to be releasing them every 2 weeks. Editing take some time and well, I'd rather have the book instead of waiting.
This book has everything. I mean everything...there is blood, guns, action, HUMOR, love, kissing, drama, fighting...I can't think of anymore to type but its all there. Rachel Higginson has a true talent. This has a mix of your zombieland humor, your walking dead action and seriousness and MORE...
I highly recommend this series to everyone. Even if your not a zombie fan you will definitely not care after this, its just so much fun to read and am so happy I found this series.
There will be 12 total episodes is this season and the author has said there is 3 seasons planned so far. The first season should end in November. We should expect Episode 9 October 25th.
***I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review***
Haley's POV this time!!!!!!!
Woohoo!
I mean, I love Reagan and all, but it was a nice to have a change of perspective. Especially because I've been dying to know exactly what Haley has been feeling about Nelson. It's one thing to hear Reagan's views in those first three episodes, it's a whole different scenario when you get the inner monologue in Haley's mind.
And I learned more about Haley than I knew before too. So that's a plus!!! Excellent character development. Check!
Haley: How could anyone live in a world without music?
Dude. I just found my soul soul sister in Haley. I NEED music in my life. I've known for like...forever that if the world were to get destroyed by zombies and I was running for my life I would literally die just from the lack of music for my ears. I'd probably go insane just singing to myself all the time to try and keep some small piece of myself together.
It's no surprise that I am in love with this novella series because I've been gushing over every single episode that comes out, but I loved the difference of this episode. I loved that Haley was the narrator in this episode and I look forward to more episodes in the future from her and other characters we have yet to get an up close and personal with.
Like Hendrix...
Yeah. He's definitely my choice on the list of POVs I am DYING to read.
I can just imagine it...
*Sighs with a stupid grin on her face*
(Oh yeah, and this one kinda leaves off on a bit of a cliffhanger. Thanks a bunch Rachel. Now I'm even more eager for the next episode to come out!)
I spent years feeling unsafe-completely vulnerable to death, disease, or Zombie-ism. And here, out in the relative open with only glass and rusted metal to shelter me, while three boys with limited ammo and a pure, focused goal to protect us and their baby sister, I felt absolutely safe and cared for.

Seriously...why are zombies not real? At least why are Rachel's zombies not real and why are her characters not either? If the zombie apocalypse were to take place this second, I am gathering my possessions and off in search of the Parker brothers. Yes, this cougar will need them if I want to survive. Or in the least have something cute to look at. Right?
This episode was probably my favorite so far. Even though you won't find one single zombie in it...it was by far the most romantic. Did it really take us getting Haley's POV for Higginson to show us that Haley and Nelson are the obvious romantic ones of the group? Don't get me wrong, I adore Reagan. But after a certain little scene towards the end of this one, I have a bad feeling. And it has something to do with Hendrix, Vaughan, and hinting at a possible love triangle. Oh dear.
Another fabulous episode that is sure to please all of its followers. You haven't read this short story series yet? ((le' gasp)) You must. If you are a fan of romance and zombies (who isn't?) then you are missing out. I am on constant stake out when it is due to release. I have to have my LOVE & DECAY zombie fix. And it is a fix only Higginson can provide.
Fav quotes...
You are a good girl, Haley. And if you fell into my lap, then it's not by luck but by pure act of God that you're with me now. So instead of looking at you like a fluke, I'm probably going to look at you like a gift. Like you walked into my life, not just as someone who will help my family survive, but as everything I've ever wanted in a girl-everything I've wanted for me.

"I'll go slow," he promised and my mind went silent- the entire jumble of thoughts disappeared immediately so I could listen with perfect attentiveness to all his soul-aching promises and sexy as hell voice. "I'll let you catch up at your own pace."
This story is in Haley's point of view - and I LOVED it!! I didn't know how I was going to feel, not being able to read about Reagan and Hendrix - and having to jump into a Haley/Nelson thing... But ugh... It was amazing! Haley is such a unique girl. I didn't realize what really makes her tick. She is a totally different person that I thought she was. And Nelson... whoa... Nelson. Obviously he is a Parker brother, and is amazing by default... But holy hell!!! That boy is DAMN HOT! A freaking sweet to top it off! Ugh, I love him. I don't know if I'll be able to willingly go back to a Reagan/Hendrix storyline.. (oh, who am I kidding - I can't wait to get back to that!!) The Haley/Nelson scenes in this story were... a.m.a.z.i.n.g. I mean... Good Lord! I'll give you a hint - we FINALLY get some kissing scenes - which... holy hell... I mean... Holy Hell... Yeah, that's all I can say. One more time for good measure. HOLY HELL!!
Another part of the story that I loved what they finally got a little break from fighting zombies. But didn't get a break from life. Instead of fighting zombies, they are fighting to save a family member - and oh.. it just breaks my heart!!
And the end?! The unknown of it all.... UGH! I just... UGH!!
Holy Cliffhanger! I have very few thoughts in my brain after this one, simply too devastated that it will be another two weeks before the next one is out. haha
But seriously, this one was good, good good! Super romancey though, probably more so than the other three books combined. With Haley + Nelson. I really liked Haley's POV, I was kind of bummed at first to have the shift in POV because I like Reagan so much, but it transitioned nicely and I adore Haley just as much as Reagan (I'm shocked! but it's true!!). And I'm guessing we will get more from Reagan in the future anyway, so it's not like things have changed entirely.
So, Haley. Toeing the line "between functioning genius and raving lunatic." She's always caught up in her head, her overactive mind tinkering away, way more than a pretty face, definitely way more than I expected. She's relatable and funny, loyal and very sweet, and crazy crazy smart - a terrific addition to the Parker family mix.
The ending of this one is a bit up in the air, where the action actually kicks in, and uh yeah, kinda leaves me speechless, just looking forward to the next one!
Favorite quote:
"This thing with Nelson would save me. And not just from Zombies."
This weeks episode of our favorite Novella series is Haleylicious. Being in her POV for a change, we really get to know this girl as something more than Reagan's bestie.
The crew found a rare treasure in their travels... electricity. Run by solar panels, the house and surrounding land at first seem a godsend. At least for a temporary retreat.
You'd think the day couldn't get any better right? After all, Haley finally has a chance to charge her iPod and listen to music to calm her overactive brain, she has a hunky man that kisses like a dream and is willing to woo her in a world gone to chaos, and they're relatively safe...
But then Page, the Parker's little sister, and someone Haley and Reagan have fully adopted into their hearts, get sick. Looks like strep throat. But without antibiotics and no way to reduce the fever, this illness could spell disaster, and heartache, for the team.
A stranger, just a boy, shows up and swears he know where some meds are... And Hendrix and Nelson are just the guys to volunteer to go.
But is is worth the risk to sneak into a militia's to get them?
And will they get back in time to save their sister?
I was given an advance copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review.
I am so glad that Rachel publishes each episode in this series every two weeks, like tv season finale cliffhangers, having to wait to see what happens next is brutal, and a 2 week wait is much more humane than 2-3 months! Or a year or more like other book series. The characters in the Love and Decay series have become like cherished friends, or even like family.
Episode 4 takes place entirely from Hayley's point of view. As much as I love Reagan, seeing things from Hayley's point of view is a breath of fresh air and gives a great new perspective on people I have grown to love. If you are wondering what is going on in the world of Hayley and Nelson, well then sit down, shut up, and hang on - cause you are in for the ride of your life!!! But of course like in any good story everything can't just be all hunky dory and we are faced with a possible tragedy. Want to know what the tragedy is? Well then what are you waiting for, pick up your copy of Love and Decay - Episode 4 today!!!
I was eagerly anticipating this Episode of Love and Decay, and was definetly not disappointed. I was also completely surprised as it was an episode with Haley's perspective. I love her character, she is a courageous, fun loving girl , with alot and I do mean alot going on in her mind. Top of those thought's is Nelson. :) And these two have a story all their own, and it is electifying to say the least. Rachel did leave us hanging at the end, and that was frustrating, but builds anticipation for the next episode. She also did manage to throw in some more feelings between Regan, Hendrix and Vaughan which has me on edge, not sure where things will end up there. And will they be able to help their little princess in their family....... Waiting not so patiently to find out.
3.5 STARS I have mixed feelings about this episode of Love and Decay. The writing was still great, but I didn't love the switch to Haley's POV. This episode also completely dealt with the Haley/Nelson love interest and had none of the zombie action I enjoyed so much in the first 3 installments ... none at all. All in all, I'm still a fan and suspect the action will be ramped back up in the next episode.
Have to read this zombie series it's epic. I ignored the call of Spain's sea and sand to read this brilliant series. Kindle one click made me read the entire series while on holidays in Spain. An epic adventure filled with lust, love, blood, kisses, zombies, action, suspense, intrigue, fear and resilience.
This new episode is from a different point of view and I loved it! I am really getting addicted to the Parker boys! Man they make ya feel all warm and fuzzy. Can't wait for the next one seeing how you left us with a huge cliffhanger!
This novella was a little disorientating as we suddenly switched to Hayley's POV. I still enjoyed it but I found myself wishing I was reading from Regans POV instead since I had already grown to like her.
Episode Four is written from Haley's POV, which is a nice change. It delves more into Haley's motivation and the relationship between her and Nelson...a lot of longing and mushy angst, the kind of stuff teenage girls go crazy for. Sickeningly sweet if you ask me!
I continue to love this series, each episode is short but I immediately buy the next one. Then I just bought all the available ones. Love the characters and the exciting story and love relationships developing. Great zombie read.
This side of Haley's perspective is amazing. I love it that there's a break from all the love triangle and tension between Vaughan and Hendrix, though they're not really fighting or anything.
I really had a hard time getting through this episode. There was a lack of drama and action that the first 3 episodes contained. It felt as if most of the story was a Haley brag book.
Rachel, I'm not sure how you do it, but you have kept this series running with enough action and adventure that barely anything repeats itself. Bravo again
