After years of abuse, Roxi is an expert at deceiving the people around her. Everyone believes she has a picture perfect family, with a loving husband and a sweet little boy. They think she resides in a beautiful house and has a luxurious lifestyle, although, that couldn’t be further from the truth. Underneath the facade is a tormented soul, poised on the brink of giving up hope of ever finding a better tomorrow.
Luke’s past haunts him every single day. Not a second goes by without deep sorrow plaguing him. He will never forget what he’s done, he doesn’t want to. No one is more deserving of guilt eating away at them than he is… or so he believes. He spends his time, forever trying to make up for the one mistake that ruined the lives of his loved ones, as well as his own.
From the first time they meet, cracks begin to form in the mask Roxi wears and Luke sees right through them. The only question is, will he realize he’s worthy of love and step in to save her before it’s too late, or continue to think he’s undeserving of true happiness?

****4 Heartbreaking Stars ****
Deception by Evie Rose exposes and goes in depth on a difficult tough heavy subject matters of physical and emotional abuse and as well as guilt. The definition of deception is the act to propagate beliefs that are not true, or not the whole truth as in half truths or omission. In this book, we are introduced to two characters, Luke and Roxi, who have perfected the act of deception. Behind their facade and tough exteriors lies two broken individuals who shares a common connections of abuse and guilt. How long can one deceived oneself of one’s true honesty and happiness? When is one finally able to accept the things we cannot change? How long will we let our guilt eat us alive? Do our past defines us? How long one must be the punching bag before one realizes that there is a better life out there?
Roxie has perfected the role of a cookie image of a dutiful wife and mother but behind the facade lies a broken and tormented woman whose life is anything but perfect. Behind the money and mansion, lies a broken beaten and abused wife. The once lively, upbeat, and hopeful woman with dreams now only lives in fear. Fear for her safety and of her son, Ricky. All of her friends and family have been deceived and manipulated by Roxie’s husband, Joseph. The man she married can be only described as a monster. The only outlet for Roxie’s pain is through cutting and running. She cuts and hurts herself to remind herself of the pain, sadness, and hurt she goes through everyday. Roxie also finds running as way for her to temporarily escape the hell that she is living in.
Luke, a firefighter, is a man who lives in a world of guilt. A guilt that has tormented and shaped who he is. In his youth, Luke has suffered and witnessed the physical and emotional abuse that his father has laid on his mother. In his need to escape the torment, he found drugs and alcohol as his way to cope and ease the pain. But one night, Luke made a mistake that will forever haunt him...the death of his family.
When Roxie decides to go out for a run, she runs across Luke. She instantly finds him attractive and is drawn to him. As with Luke, he too finds her attractive and beautiful but one problem: She is married and has a kid. Since both finds running as a way for them to clear their mind, they soon became running buddies and develops a friendship. As they developed a closer friendship, Luke learns of Roxie’s secrets. He encourages her to leave her husband and to move into his house temporarily till she gets back on her feet. When Roxie finally decides to leave her husband, an enraged Joseph unleashes torment on her and Ricky and decides to burn mother and son alive by setting their house on fire. When Luke’s fire station hears of the news of a house caught on fire, Luke is immediately on high alert and panic sets in when he hears that it’s Roxie’s house. With adrenaline coursing through him, Luke storms into the burning inferno and rescues Roxie and Ricky.
With no money, clothes, and a place to stay, Roxie and Ricky soon finds themselves temporarily living with Luke and his housemate, Jake, another firefighter. As mother and son adjust to this new life, Luke and Roxie also finds themselves being drawn together. They must decide if their relationship is based on their common bond of abuse or is it based on a deeper level of love and comfort. Can two individuals who both share a tragic past and secrets find solace, trust, support and love in each other?
Deception can only be described a story of new beginnings. In the case of Roxie, a fresh new start and clean slate began when she finally had the courage to leave her husband. She was able to regain the control she lost when she was with Joseph. As with Luke, his new beginning came in the form of a mother and son walking into his life. With Ricky and Roxie in his life, he finally was able to let go of the shame and guilt that has plagued his heart and mind. Overall, Ms. Evie Rose did a marvelous job for her debut book in tackling a difficult subject matter. She provides her readers an honest and raw tale of two individuals who found light after years of being in the dark. So if you are looking a book, that will make you feel then definitely go read Deception. It reminds us all that when one door closes, another opens.
I look forward to reading more works from Ms. Evie Rose and cannot wait for Jake’s story.
Reviewed on Behalf of Give Me Books Blog Evie Rose
AHHH…I cannot explain how excited I was to be able to read and review this book. Although, throughout the entire book I couldn’t decide on how I wanted my review to go. First of all, I knew before half way through that this was going to be a 5 star review. Only by the time I got to the end I was wishing my scale would have gone up to 10. This book is that awesome. There are so many people to relate to that it’s hard to narrow it down as to what to write.
Deception is just as much heartbreaking as it is a breathtaking story. Evie Rose is AH-Mazing! It’s not too often that I read a book that draws out so many strong emotions from me. From the very beginning in the Prologue I was hooked. I knew this was going to be a book that I wouldn’t be able to put down.
One thing I loved about this book is how Evie reveals both Roxi’s and Luke’s issues slowly. The story is fast paced but not rushed. You are able to get the buildup of emotions and truly feel what everyone is going through. The writing is phenomenal. Evie Rose doesn’t linger on unimportant details. Every word has a purpose. She sure knows how to keep a reader intrigued and burning for more.
Roxi is a strong determined heroin and Luke is a lost grieving soul…will they be able to help each other or do their pasts have too strong of a hold on them?
I sympathized with Roxi and her son Ricky. Roxi is married to Joseph…a physically and emotionally abusive asshole who tears Roxi and Ricky down every chance he gets. The things he made Roxi do literally made me sick. He is a sorry excuse for a husband and a father. Poor Ricky just wants a dad and tries so hard with Joseph only to be berated at every go. She is terrified to leave and the only thing that is keeping her there is her fear of Joseph following through on his threats. She lives a life of mundane chores by day and abuse by night. She’s lost and wonders if she will ever be able to find her way back to the woman she used to be. Before Joseph.
Luke is a sexy firefighter who has had his fair share of tragedy and battles to deal with throughout his life. In the Prologue we get a glimpse of what he has had to deal with. He has come to terms with what is life is. He has dedicated himself to saving the lives of others. He doesn’t think he deserves the true happiness a family could bring him. He has never really even allowed himself to think about it. That is until one day in the park during his daily run he comes across a sexy brunette that has him having all kinds of crazy thoughts. There’s just one problem…she’s married. From their very first meeting you can feel the connection they have. Luke doesn’t really understand it…he just knows it more than he can explain.
He sets himself out to be her friend. He just wants to run with her. She is nervous. Her attraction to Luke is unlike anything she has ever felt and it leaves her feeling guilty. She allows him in just enough to stay connected to him in a strictly platonic way but doesn’t want him to find out the ugly truth of her life.
Throughout the book Luke and Roxi’s bond gets stronger. He is there for her more than anyone else has ever been, and she provides him with a peace he has never felt before. They have fun and joke, and laugh together. Their relationship is light and exciting which leaves each of them wondering if it’s possible to live a life of real happiness.
As incredible as Luke and Roxi’s bond is…the truly remarkable relationship in this book for me, the one that brought tears to my eyes, was the relationship between Luke and Ricky. Luke hasn’t really had much experience with kids but he can’t help but feel an incredible bond with the extremely sweet five year old. Ricky has never had a man in his life to actually pay attention to him…well not positive attention anyway. He’s used to being screamed at for everything he does. He is five but doesn’t know the feeling of being a kid. Luke is a big kid at heart. He is fun and silly. He wants nothing more than to bring a smile to the little boy who is weaseling his way into his heart.
There are so many messages in this book and it can relate to so many people. It’s a story of determination and destiny. There is no cliffhanger but there is a companion novel coming out in 2014 with Jake (Luke’s best friend and housemate). I loved Jake so I am extremely excited for his story in BETRAYAL.
Thank You Evie Rose for your remarkable story. I’m looking forward to reading more from you!
Are you looking for a light romance with a bit angst, humor, and steam in it? If, then check our Deception. It’s not too heavy and tells the tale about two people who face different kinds of trouble but with the same outcome –afraid to let go so they can embrace something new. A love that could overweigh their previous nightmares, making them forget.
Roxi was a strong character and despite what she suffered throughout her marriage she held her chin high and kept up her well-build facade that her world is all-so-perfect. It was not at all perfect; her husband was a douche and he’d scared the bejesus out of me. Her only escapes are her daily runs where she met one day Luke –Mr Hottie Firefighter!
We get a glimpse of Luke’s past when starting the prologue and damn, no wonder he is how he’s and became a firefighter –such a traumatic past. I was truly sad after reading his story. But throughout the book you could see his funny, charming and sexy side. I enjoyed his pov and could totally understand his doubts and angst to be with Roxi. But that didn’t hinder him to let loose and show her his affection *winks*
Evie wrote a great debut, capturing the characters struggle to forget, to move on and to give a new love a chance. The book has a bit of everything and it’s a fast enjoyable read if you don’t look for something super dramatic, heart-wrenching, or rip your heart out book.

I was giving an ARC of this book for an honest review so here goes.....
This is Evie's first book, but you wouldn't think that by reading it. She hits the pages with a bang and just keeps on running. The story of this book show what the effects of domestic violence has in a relationship. And how and what people do to block it out.
The story starts off with Luke as a teenager. Trying to get high to forget something, you just don't know what. He gets the munchies which makes him go to his kitchen in the dead of night looking for food. He knocks on the chip pan,but when he come's up short looking for food he decides to go out and just continue his booze and drug binge. What he didn't remember is that he left the chip pan on....... What he comes back to is not good, and no matter how many years have gone by all that happened that night is his guilt to bare.
Now flash forward 10 years to where he's a fire fighter, still fighting with his demons about what happened that night all them years ago. BUT he is,as much as he can be anyways. But he can never open up fully to someone because of this. So other then one night stands and casual relationships his life is pretty loveless. He lives with his best mate Jake though. You will love him. He's such a great character who really helps Luke along.
SO while all this is going on Roxi is leading her own life with Joseph. AND just let me say now I hate him with a firey vengence. What he puts poor Roxi and her son Ricky threw is unreal. Domestic violence at its finest. He is pure evil. The hurtful stuff he says to both of them is 10 times worse then 100 punch's he could give her. Her on;y solace is reading and running. So while out running one morning she meets a drop dead sexy man who's also running. Who's name just happen's to be Luke...... And while she's checking him out, which by the way he totally catches her,she runs head first into a poll. Talk about falling for a man!
So he obviously helps her up,and they instantly connect. But she's married. And not to a normal bloke either. To her EVIL husband Joseph. So she needs to make sure this is only friendship and nothing more. So they become running partners, and friends over time. But one dreaded time there out her husband happens to be passing and Luke over hears him been extremly nasty to her. It makes his blood boil. So as you can imagine when he see's finger marks on her neck he totally flips out. He know's for sure now that this girl is in the same place as SHE was all those years ago,he vows to help her. Attraction aside, she needs a shoulder to lean on and he wants to be there for her. He finally helps her get the courage she needs to get herself and Ricky outta that house and away from Joseph once and for all. And everything is going like clockwork, until it isn't..... You really see the evil that lurks in Joesph when she trys to leave.
I'd tell everyone to give Evie's book a shot. It really opens your eyes up to what goes on behind closed doors all the time. And ass for Jake Lukes best friend, his book is book two! Which I can't wait for because I love him in book one! :)
Deception is the first in a series of individual books written by Evie Rose. This is a story about abuse, real torturous abuse both physically and mentally. Roxi is a woman under siege from a repulsive husband who treats her with so much disrespect it’s sickening and sometimes hard to read. Roxi tries to make everyone outside of her relationship see that she is a happy woman living in a loving relationship with her husband, but of course it’s just a façade.
This was a hard book for me to read at times, the abuse and the type of man (I use that term very loosely) she was married to was shocking. I think the stand out part of shocking was when Roxi had to clean his office, I won’t go into details because it will spoil it, but it was an “oh my God - you have got to be kidding” moment for me.
Luke has a past that is still haunting him to this day and he thinks that he’s deserving of the guilt he lives with from his past. This guilt eats away at him day in and day out. Luke is a fire fighter, and the reasons for this become obvious as you read through the book. He has a best mate Jake, who plays an important role in this book and the next book in this series is dedicated to Jake, which should be an interesting read.
This book was a rollercoaster ride of emotion for me, feelings such as shock, anger, betrayal, disgust and pure hatred for a person and then there were feelings of friendship, love, and some laugh out loud moments had me loving this book. Well done Evie Rose, if I could have given you more than 5 golden stars I would have.
I was given this book to review by Magic Within the Pages.
In Deception, we meet Roxi. A married woman and the mother of a little boy. She enjoys running. She's able to clear her mind, feels free, and it's how she escapes from her life where she suffers abuse from her husband.
Although Roxi is the victim of domestic abuse and is deceiving her friends, she isn't completely weak. She knows that she needs to get out of the marriage, but she wants a solid plan set in place for when she does take that final step. She needs to know that she will be able to support her son and make it on her own.
One day while running she notices Luke. And he notices her. They begin passing each other on their runs everyday, and soon become running partners. Roxi feels comfortable around Luke, and slowly (with a little encouragement from Luke) begins to open up to him.
Luke has his own tortured past (which we learn about in the prologue), and as Luke and Roxi's friendship progresses, they both discover that they may just be what each other needs to heal and be happy.
I really enjoyed reading Deception. The characters were very well developed and extremely realistic. Although I found the beginning a little slow, it soon picked up pace and blew me away. The story was engaging, believable and the emotion from the characters was tangible.
Evie Rose has done an amazing job with her debut novel. I look forward to reading more from this author in the future!
Deception by Evie Rose is due for publication on January 2nd, 2014. I received an ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review.

message from Evie
Due to traumatic life events beyond my control I am taking my books off the shelf for the unforeseeable future. I'm extremely grateful to all my readers and the bloggers who helped promote the word of my book. I'm so sorry that I have to do this, I wish I could explain further however I'm unwilling to post my private life all over face book. I hope you all understand. I will be leaving them up until tomorrow my time when I will unpublish. Again I'm so sorry. That Is all I'm able to say right now.
Evie
4.5 Stars
This book once I started just consumed me. I could not stop reading. Full review to come later once released.
I will say this this is not an easy read for some. It has Abuse in it from both characters.
I will also say I would recommend this book everyone who does not mind the fact that their is Abuse in it.
Why my 4.5 Star review and not 5 stars. Simply because their is no epilogue. I wish there had been. I am hoping that in Book #2 which is based on Another Character in the book has more of Roxi & Luke in it.
ARC provided by author in exchange for honest review.
Evie Rose did an amazing job handling some strong subject material. This isn’t a happy man finds woman, falls in love, everything is perfect kind of story.
We meet Roxi who is married with a young boy and is in a relationship, no one deserves, abused, raped, and treated like a servant, she is miserable. She runs into Luke who also has a troubled past of his own, and a friendship is formed. Roxi is afraid to leave her abusive husband, and when she finally does, OMG! He’s freaking crazy, and a horrible, horrible person.
We get to see Roxi find herself, and watch Luke deal with his own demons. The two of them are pretty amazing together, and this story grasps your from the beginning and really pulls you into it. I enjoyed this story by Evie Rose and again think she did an amazing job dealing with the subject matter at hand. I’m excited to see Jake’s story in 2014 and will definitely pick up other titles by Evie in the future.
Deception is scheduled to release January 2014, so make sure to add it to your TBR list today and pick it up when it goes live
This book was beautifully written. I feel in love with the characters and their individual strength. The story of overcoming abuse and reclaiming your life and yourself in the process is what makes the book so good. Totally recommend.
I loved this book. Roxi is an abused wife who just puts up with it because she thinks she has to. Luke is a hot fire fighter living with the guilt that it was his fault that his family perished in a fire. They find each other, love each other and heal each other.
***THIS BOOK WAS GIVEN TO ME IN EXCHANGE FOR AN HONEST REVIEW***
It only takes a few pages of Deception to know that this is going to be an emotionally charged story. We first meet Luke, a teenager who's taking enough drugs and alcohol to numb some horrible pain and put him into a haze from which he can barely emerge. You start to fear as he sets a pot of oil on the stove and leaves the house in search of food, and then a party where he can get more drugs and alcohol. You cry for him as he returns home to a house in flames and the smell of burned bodies heavy in the air. Luke's' drug induced actions killed his entire family.
Fast forward many years and we meet Luke again. He's a fire-fighter, wracked by horrible nightmares, and he's barely keeping it together. But he does, because every person he saves is important. He has to do something to make up for what he did as a teenager. His housemate, Jake, knows he's a mess, but has agreed to hide it from the Chief at his fire station so that Luke can keep working and trying to atone for his sins.
The other main character in this story is Roxi. Married right out of school, with a young son, Ricky, she's trapped in a loveless and abusive marriage. Her husband doesn't hit her often, but that makes the abuse no less horrible. He belittles her, threatens their son, calls him a baby, and is generally a complete and total [%$!$%$]. We see Roxi having to clean up his messes after he's spent the night pleasuring himself (to porn one would assume, though it isn't explicitly stated), having to get the house in perfect condition or have to face his wrath, and have to play the perfect spouse over and over again. This is a type of abuse that isn't often talked about. Bruises are one thing, broken bones, gashes. Those are well understood. But for Roxi, it's not the physical pain. At least not mostly. Joseph, her husband, threatens her constantly. He forces himself on her, usually when she's doped herself up on sleeping pills to try to forget, but he's careful not to leave evidence of his abuse. Roxi is dead inside, surviving only for her young son. She dreams of leaving Joseph, but she has no money of her own, no job, and no resources. He's cut her off from her friends. They see HIS friends when they socialize. Do what HE wants on the rare times they spend together.
The only time Roxi can relax and truly be herself and feel alive is when she runs. So she runs every day. The day she changes up her route and runs into Luke is the day that everything changes for her.
I enjoyed this book thoroughly. Roxi's recovery, while a bit quick, feels natural. Her relationship with Luke starts out slow. They run. He sees something in her that he recognizes and we soon learn that he was abused as well by his father. We see glimpses of more between them. Just glimpses. A look here, a laugh there. They run together every day eventually, and Roxi learns that there are men who value women. Men who will give of themselves and ask for nothing in return.
Events transpire (which I won't spoil) that lead to a sudden and dramatic need for Roxi to leave and Luke is there. Roxi is able to lean on him, but at the same time, she stands on her own. I liked that this story didn't progress right into Roxi jumping in to saying she loved Luke after what she went through, but took the time to learn a bit about who she was-even though her time was spent largely with Luke.
I loved that Luke let her explore her own feelings and her own independence even though he knew well before she did that this was it for him.
The love story between the two was sweet, tender, and sexy. Luke's healing was natural and healthy and something he never could have done without Roxi. And Roxi's evolution into someone she could be proud of was aided by Luke, but didn't depend solely on him.
Deception is the first in a series of books, each focusing on different characters (though we hope there will be at least some mention of Luke and Roxi in Jake's upcoming tale). A solid, fulfilling, tale that will leave you smiling.

**Potential Spoiler Alert** So I’ll admit I didn’t apparently enjoy this as many other readers did. Don’t get me wrong it was good, but I found myself occasionally getting bored and hoping things would speed up. Roxi is a stay at home mom living in hell with her husband. He’s verbally abusive to both her and their son but Roxi is stuck, unsure how to leave without the world tumbling around her.
Luke has an insane past. At a young age, he accidently lost his family and blames himself till this day. After meeting while running at the park, both Luke and Roxi build some sort of acquaintance. Roxi immediately lets it be known that she is married and is a mother. Luke is barely deterred, especially after he witnesses her scumbag husband screaming obscenities and slurs at her. Luke is determined to be a rock and helping hand to Roxi.
Over time Roxi gains the courage to leave. Unfortunately for her, her husband is unwilling to let her and their son leave easily. After attempting to kill them by setting a fire, he flees. Luckily Luke and his fellow firefighters are on the way and manages to save Roxi’s son and Roxi with only minor burns.
Roxi’s accident brings back so many memories for Luke that it’s a constant battle for him but he pledges to protect her and her son no matter the cost. He couldn’t protect his family, so maybe there’s some redemption in saving Roxi. The two face an undeniable attraction from the first meeting but obviously wedding vows and douche bag husbands make their attraction hard to act on. Not to mention Roxi hasn’t felt desirable in far too long. (At this point I would like to point out there is a rape scene so be warned.)
Luke convinces Roxi to move in with him. Though nothing romantic happens, the feelings and sexual tension grows. Both are hesitant to act on their feelings as technically Roxi is still married and her husband is awaiting trial. Weeks pass and eventually they can’t resist.
I was very glad by how long it took for these two to hook up. I know, considering most of the book passes with only a few kisses but it just worked both for their personalities and the fact that Roxi is still getting over her abusive relationship and trying to live on her own and support her son.
Her son was a great supporting character. Even though Luke was a bit scared and unsure how to behave, his past allows him insight into his feelings and these two bond as well. As always I love having kids in stories as they say the funniest things. Luke and Roxi’s night of adult fun is a giant joke in the morning when Ricky tells Luke its okay to pee in your bed as he goes to washed his ‘soiled’ sheets. Total LOL moment.
Overall I enjoyed this book but it was a bit to cut and dry for me. The danger and suspense only hit a high early on and sort of faded out. Much like I felt the rest of the story. It flows on and on and Roxi grows into a new woman, but I was often bored at times, even while I needed to know if these two would finally get together and have a HEA. There was nothing too unexpected and I was more put off by Luke’s self demeaning nature than anything else. It probably doesn’t seem like it but I did enjoy the story. There was no epilogue so I did stew over that but I was still pleased with the ending. If there’s more to come from this series, I’m definitely on the waiting list.
Things happen to people they never thought would happen, unimaginable things. Sometimes these things make you feel like you deserved what is happening to you even when its not. Evie Rose writes a story about people who have had horrible things happen in their life, but when they meet each other its like they were meant to keep each other a float. Some things in this book were horrible to read but that it what added to the book. Evie Rose writes this story amazing structure, I enjoyed this book very much.
Luke is a fire fighter who always makes sure he is there to same a family, every family he saves makes up for the one important family he couldn't, his own. He knew he was never worthy of love or a family for that matter so he has his department as his family.
Roxi was your typical woman, she fell in love with a man and they married and started a family. unfortunately things changed. Her husband became emotionally abusive. He Started controlling the way she lived her life. Roxi was meant to be there for cooking, cleaning, and being there for his needs. Ricky, their son was not even a thought, but Roxi loved him and wanted what was best for her son. While running one morning she met Luke, an incredibly handsome man who showed her so much attention. Something she really wasn't used to. He became her savior on those morning runs. After things started to turn physical at home Luke offered her way for her and Ricky to get out safe. Only her husband wasn't going to have it so he set their house on fire with them still inside. He vowed Roxi would never leave him. Luke was there to help safe Roxi and Ricky's lives. While keeping them safe until Roxi could be on her own they started to fall hard for each other. They were able to share their deepest and darkest fears and help them over come them.
I love how Evie Rose shows the strength a woman has for her child, but at the same time still deserves the love and affection of a man. This book shows so much courage.
I have got to honest. I was destroyed right out of the gate with this one. Gutted and thinking omg.. Really .. omg! The subject is hard. It's raw and not pretty in any way shape or form. Abuse in any form is a tough subject. This book goes beyond that and is so much more. It's tough, not for the faint of heart but if you can hang. It's a story worth reading. That was my only disclaimer on the matter - here is why. I really liked this book. Even with all the things that made me want to cringe and scream. All the people I really wanted to punch and the emotions it made me process. Luke and Roxi are two of the most broken and beat down souls I have ever met. It amazes me how broken and bent people can be and live. Even if it's a half life, they live it. This book makes you take a hard look at life. Can you move past things you cannot change? Can guilt destroy you? Eat away at anything left of a semblance of life you have left. Sometimes we move forward but we are standing in the same spot over and over. Never changing and always accepting where we are.. It's the cards your dealt right? Can you change that deck, can you muster the courage to think you deserve more. If not for you what about your child? Do the stupid actions of your past always have to be present in your today? This is the kind of questions I was thinking and asking over and over in my head.
There are so many things I could tell you about this book. I won't though. I think this books subject matter deserves to be read. I know this story is not for everyone. You might like it or you might love it. I guess it's possible you can hate it. It's just that you need to respect it. It's a devastatingly beautiful tale of second chances and healing your soul. Life is not always dark, sometimes from the ugliest places beauty rises. Well done Ms. Evie Rose. Thank you for sharing it.
Deception was a great read! I was hooked from the very beginning, and ended up finishing the book in a day. I had to know if Roxi and Luke were going to get their well-deserved happily ever afters!
I find stories of abuse to be so upsetting, and yet compelling to read. My heart ached for Roxi, and especially for her innocent son. I repeatedly found myself wishing her husband would burn for what he put them through. When Roxi meets Luke by chance one day, I predicted what would happen between them, but that didn't make the journey there any less enjoyable.
What I liked about Deception was the way Roxi builds her new life. She's determined to stand on her own and I admired her for that. The love story was just right, full of passion yet built on a foundation of mutual respect and trust. Another neat touch is that this story is set in England and the characters speak with accents. Well, of course I couldn't hear their accents, but they say things like "mum" and "footy" (football), which made this book fun and different from my usual reads. I loved imagining Luke's accent as he was talking to Roxi, especially when he was professing his feelings for her.
Luke's past was so sad. I was happy with the way he comes to terms with it, and thought it was a healthy way for him to heal. I despise when authors use a new romance between characters to magically heal all their past wounds; a poorly-wielded plot device that occurs a lot in contemporary romance. Thankfully, Rose employed much more realistic and better ways of moving her main characters past their traumatic pasts, and I loved her for that.
If you're a fan of contemporary romance, I would definitely recommend Deception. I really enjoyed it and can't wait to read more from Evie Rose.
Well....I read in a day as I couldn't put this down. Roxi is in an abusive relationship, her Son Ricky also suffers at the hands of her husband Joseph and she is just waiting for the right moment to try and escape without the fear of him trying to fight her for custody.
Fighting depression, trying to keep house, losing her friends and not to do anything to rile her husbands temper she struggles to keep the lie of the perfect life.......
Out jogging, she meets Luke, wonderfully written, Evie didn't miss a beat. I love dual pov and with Luke having had a terrible upbringing and then making a devastating mistake which is still haunting him to this day, recognises the cracks in the mask that Roxi wears. Although she doesn't want to, they become friends, jogging together and it really was like light and shade between her home life and her time with Luke how she changed, allowed herself to become flirty, free and so different to the woman Joseph had trapped inside.
Evie didn't rush either story, we learn bit by bit, from Luke about his past. How he is fighting with his growing feelings for Roxi against his fears of having a family. His demons surfacing and how he wants to help Roxi when he finally finds out what is happening at home.......
Joseph is the scum of the earth! I am leaving it at that....you have to find this for yourself
A wonderful book beautifully written, tender, emotional, respectful, with the perfect amount of flirting, lol moments and romantic and sexy. To sum up..... Yes it had it all....and I shed a few tears too........Evie Rosie took me on a journey of emotions and I loved every single line.
"Discover what brings you the most fulfillment and then do it. If you concentration on the important things, everything else will fall into place."
Roxi has been in an abusive relationship with her husband and as a little escape she goes on runs. One day she sees the persistent Luke who runs along with her. The attraction is obvious but she is married and he isnt interested in ruing anything. Luke slowly starts to notices the signs because he had once upon a time seen it before and want to help Roxie in any way that he can.
"People make mistakes, you learn from them, but you should'tn have to apy for then in the horrific ways for the rest of your life."
Wow, such a beautiful and heartbreaking book. At times I had to remind myself that this was just a book and that these were fictional characters, it was so realistic. I loved the characters. I loved the connection between Roxi and Luke. I loved how caring and understanding Luke was. I loved how Roxi eventually gotten the courage and strength and the voice to speak out and reach for help from her friends. I also loved the Roxi didn't jump into things straight after her husband she did want her space. She wanted her independence and to do things on her own before there's anything serious with Luke. I loved her best friend for being supportive and not letting her go when she really needed her. This book was beautifully written and there was never a dull moment. In fact I couldn't put the book down I sat down and read the whole book in one day.
Overall I absolutely loved this book and it deserved 5 of 5 Stars. Highly Recommend!

Deception is the first in a series of individual books written by Evie Rose. This is a story about abuse, real torturous abuse both physically and mentally. Roxi is a woman under siege from a repulsive husband who treats her with so much disrespect it’s sickening and sometimes hard to read. Roxi tries to make everyone outside of her relationship see that she is a happy woman living in a loving relationship with her husband, but of course it’s just a facade.
This book was so emotionally painful for me to read. There are so many similarities with my past life that it's scarey.
Roxi is a stay at home Mum. That's all she has ever been. Marrying her high-school love and having a child not long after. She thought she was lucky to have her happily ever after so quickly. A perfect family. That is until her husbands true colours start to show and he's not what she thought he was. He was cruel, controlling, manipulative and disgusting.
Luke's story is a story of redemption so touching and emotional. A struggle to find self-worth underneath all of the demons that eat at him every day.
Reading this story was, at some points, so overwhelming for me because of the connection I have had with a life like that. It felt real and had so much raw emotion in it. Real life issues dug up and exposed, telling the story that so many people live every single day without anyone knowing.
Evie Rose has delivered a highly emotional read full of pain, heartache and loss but also strength, resilience, hope, triumph, lust and love. And most importantly determination. Determination for a better life. A truly touching story that everyone will love.
If I didn't know that this was Evie's first book, I would never have guessed it. The story line has so much depth, especially with the alternating POV's, and the writing is fantastic. Deception will break your heart, and at the same time send a million warm fuzzies shooting right through it. I actually did a happy dance at the end where it says there will be a second book, about alternate characters in the story. I am so excited to read more from Evie Rose!
I enjoyed this book. The plot flowed nicely and the main characters were very well developed. I liked the angst. I would have liked to learn more about why Joseph flipped the way he did, how things were great then they weren't.
Just for continuity reasons I wanted to say that the one thing I found just a little confusing was the British(?)lingo. I don't know if the book specifically states where they are or what nationality they are but I assumed it was America due to them going to see football games (Bronco's and Titans).
I thought this was an exceptional book. I couldn't get enough of it. the connection between Luke & Roxi was amazing!! I thought the author did a fantastic job of portraying an extremely difficult subject. I was lucky enough to purchase this book before it was removed from Amazon. at this time, I'm not sure when the book will be available to purchase again or when book 2 will be released at this point. my suggestion would be to put this book on your radar and keep it there until it's made available. Evie Rose has earned herself a BIG fan in me!!!!
Feel bad that I couldn't finish it but it's not keeping my attention. I'm giving it 2 stars because it started off strong especially that prologue but it's just not going fast enough for me. But im in the minority, almost all reviews I've read gave this one 5 stars.
