Bears of the World

Rate this book
Bears have inspired humans for thousands of years. We have celebrated their power and wildness from early cave paintings to the naming of constellations. This vividly illustrated portrait of bears describes the history, behavior, and habitats of all the world species: the grizzly, polar, American black, Asiatic black, sloth, and sun and spectacled bears, as well as the giant panda. It also takes a practical look at the complex issues of bear conservation, and highlights what individuals and organizations can do to help preserve a healthy future for these majestic creatures.

My parents gave me this book for my 10th birthday (6 years ago now) and although I read it then, I've decided to pick it up again upon seeing a black bear in wild California on holiday a month ago. Bears are without a doubt my favourite animal, the origin of which has probably got something to do with my childhood oppression with Winnie the Pooh. My dogs and even my cat have been subsequently nicknamed 'bear', something that has carried on from the nickname given to me from my parents (who tend to call me Laura bear). Anyway, reading this at 16 when my brain has become, arguably, more devolved, I understood a lot more of the scientific side of this book, which there is a lot of, and have thoroughly enjoyed the cute bear pictures on every page. To any bear lover like myself I recommend this book as it gave me a greater understanding of the life of these magnificent creatures.
