EXCERPT: By the time she reached the house, every step required effort. The mountain loomed in the distance, blurred by low, dark cloud. An ominous hulk pressing down on the city, squeezing any joy from the streets. Her home, at least, looked welcoming. The windows of the ground floor shining a soft gold against the dead grey of the day, promising warmth and comfort. Inside a bath and a hot meal awaited. A glass of wine. Or the whole bottle. She stepped through the gate, stopping as she reached the front door, preparing herself to enter. She was filled with weariness at the thought of listening to Emerson's prattle or pretending everything was okay under Josephine's perceptive gaze. She didn't want to be with these people - these strangers. She wanted to be alone, wanted to give into the weight of her fears, to cry and wallow, and drown her misery in a steady procession of strong drinks. Conversation was beyond her and she didn't have the strength to be anything other than miserable. She wanted her home to herself goddammit. Not filled with these women who, let's face it, could be complicit in the damage being inflicted on her. It was a scenario she couldn't rule out.
She fumbled through her bag for her key, remembering after a minute that the house key lived with her car keys. Which were with the mechanic.

MY THOUGHTS: An absorbing tale of friendship, obsession and revenge.
A Shadow at the Door is a slow-burner character driven psychological thriller. Dixon has written wonderful characters from the overly burdened Remi and her concerned and caring (or are they?) housemates to Remi's greedy and conniving ex-husband Simon and his second wife, influencer Kayla, to Remi's oldest friend Luke, the man who is always there for her.
Dixon has created a deliciously uncomfortable atmosphere, combining the harshness of the Tasmanian winter with the despair Remi feels as one thing after another goes wrong in her life; events that she comes to realise are not random pieces of bad luck but a carefully organised campaign against her. She doesn't know who she can trust. I didn't know who she could trust!
A Shadow at the Door is a quietly tense read that had all my senses on alert. There is a little repetition on occasion when we are shown events from the viewpoints of multiple characters but, on the whole, this was an absorbing and tense read.

A twisty mystery set in Tasmania. While I guessed some of the who, I didn’t guess they why completely. In saying that, It did not take away from my enjoyment of this book. It was a fun, page turner
Remi is a newly divorced woman, renovating her home in Hobart, Tasmania. Her ex husband is hassling her to pay him back and money is very tight. She makes the decision to take in 2 lodgers to help makes ends meet. Things start to go missing, she is targeted online and her life is just spiralling. Who is making her life a misery and why?
The setting of Tasmania in the winter was perfect. Cozy fires with a glass of wine sounds just perfect. Made me want to travel down there.

But as bad things began happening to Remi, one after the other, escalating in a frightening fashion, Remi wondered if her ex was using tactics which threatened Remi into selling. She wouldn't put it past him. Could she remain strong enough to stop what was happening? Would her two new housemates help her - or were they involved?

Filled with tension, intense and heart stopping moments, I was tossing whodunnits all over the place! With well written characters and fast turning pages, I have no hesitation in recommending A Shadow at the Door to fans of the genre.

An absorbing and twisty tale of revenge and bad deeds. Many moments of hating a certain character, and countlessly doubting others. Jo Dixon wrote scheming and manipulating characters believably, making me turn the pages quickly, and with intent. I loved the female friendships depicted here, where Remi, a strong and courageous woman is battling hard to keep her head above water. She’s worked hard to make a beautiful home in Hobart, renovating and creating something special, and now her vindictive ex-husband and his insipid and fake new wife are pressuring her to sell – their greed palpable and popping into her life to reap the rewards of her hard work. She shows moments of strength, but many where she needs to back herself more. A page turning and hefty domestic thriller set in Tasmania, where the setting was beautiful, in contrast to the evil characters. I NEEDED to know who was behind Remi’s extreme misfortune, she was so undeserving of the twisty and tormented treatment she has been receiving. Josephine and Emerson are interesting and courageous friends, leaving me enjoying this original story and needing to know the outcome. I enjoyed this for the most part, though I felt certain parts of the plot had been repetitive when each character explained what they were up to in solving the terrible things being carried out against Remi, and this made portions drag.

Aussie author Jo Dixon knows how to keep her readers on the edge of their seats. The tension that builds throughout this book is so good and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Highly recommended.

WOW this one was a one sitting read, there was no way I was putting it down till I got to the end, I have been eagerly awaiting Jo Dixon’s next book since I read her debut last year which I loved so much and she has nailed it again with a book filled with mystery, tension and wonderful characters and Hobart Tasmania is great setting, come along for the ride I am sure you will love it as much as I did.
Former TV star Remi Lucan has made herself a good life in Hobart, renovating the house that means so much to her after everything that has happened to her, the vicious attack and her divorce from her husband, leaving her career and wifely duties behind has been good for her and her beautiful home is nearly finished, if only she had more money to do so.
Her ex-husband Simon is putting the pressure on her to sell the house and pay him back what she owes, but Remi is desperate to keep her house, so desperate that she takes in a couple of borders, an older woman Josephine and a young woman Emerson, this is hard for Remi but needs must, but when there are a few things happening that are causing even more problems for Remi Josephine and Emerson decide to do some investigating, could there be someone behind these incidents, is someone out to get Remi and if so who?
Remi has always had one close friend, Luke and he is there for her always and as things get worse he arrives in Hobart to help as well, but who is doing these things to Remi, are her new borders involved, it is her ex and his new wife, who and then things heat up, are lives now in danger, will they discover who is behind it before it is too late?
This book has many twists and turns, so many people who could be the culprit, but who? I was tossing around guesses in my mind at each turn of the page, so many wonderful characters in this one, good and bad. I loved Remi she stayed strong throughout all that is and has happened to her, I was cheering her on. This is one that I highly recommend truly if you love a good mystery, thriller one that will keep you guessing then read this one.

Hobart positively glistens as the setting for Jo Dixon's latest thriller. Anyone who has been there will recognise its colonial architecture, quirky commercial district and deceptively tranquil nature reserves. The story is compelling, if let down somewhat by patchy characterisation (including a shallow antagonist whose unnatural dialogue was an annoying red flag for this reader).
Overall, a decent escapist read.

A Shadow At the Door is a domestic thriller that I found particularly interesting for a number of reasons. The first is the setting of Hobart, Tasmania which is brought to sparkling life as a crucial part of the story. The second is the difficulty I had in working out who exactly the abusive party is.
We meet Remi, a former actress who now lives in a beautiful old home she has spent countless days and weeks renovating to bring it back to beyond its former glory. But spoiling the party for her is Simon, her ex- husband who shows up at her door with plans to sell the place or from under her. After all, he had financed the original purchase of the place.
No sooner has she refused his approaches that a series of incidents start to plague her. Each incident costs her money, making it harder and harder to find the money required to avoid defaulting on the loan.
Someone is responsible for her consistent bad luck and Simon is the prime suspect.
To help earn money, Remi decides to take in a couple of boarders, Josephine and Emerson. Vastly different in age and personality, they both prove to be valuable additions to her household.
For a vast portion of the book, Remi appeared ready to explain away all instances of bad luck. But when a fire is deliberately lit in her basement and she sees a figure walking from her home she understands someone is out to get her. The question is who? The obvious answer or an unexpected other?
This is a thriller that takes a little time to get rolling but once it gathers pace the momentum ensures that it's an enjoyable ride.
There are many opportunities for misdirection and Jo Dixon does a fine job of milking them for all she's worth. The result is high suspense and a plot that leads you down a dark path.
Set in Hobart, Tasmania the beauty of the city's surrounding landscape plays a key role in providing a breathtaking backdrop to the drama within. Critical moments that take place at Salamanca Market and Queens Domain help to make it fell as though I was right there in the midst of the action.
I found A Shadow At the Door to be an engrossing psychological thriller that vendor from a nicely conceived twist midway through. Remi bore all of the hallmarks of a domestic abuse survivor and, as such, I thought her responses to the confrontations with the men in her life were wholly understandable, even if it did affect the flow of the story.
I thought the strength of the book came from her two housemates. Although vastly different in age and personality, they each brought unique and fresh outlooks and life experiences from which they could draw. The strength they provided results in an action packed ride that proved to be very entertaining.

This was quite an entertaining mystery read with lots of little twists and red herrings. While I had a feeling about someone being responsible for Remi's misfortune, I turned out to be only partly right. The storyline certainly showcases the depths some people are willing to sink to in order to get what they want. Sometimes I found Remi a bit wilfully ignorant and as such irritating, but this was offset by the chapters that switched perspectives to her new housemates, Josephine and Emerson. I could respect Remi's reluctance to open up her home and only doing so because she was forced financially, and I thought the author did a great job depicting the awkwardness etc of getting to know a stranger now living in your home. Thriller fans will enjoy the escalation of events that result in a suspense-filled read.

After Jo Dixon’s stunning debut novel with The House Of Now And Then, I was excited for A Shadow at the Door and it definitely didn’t disappoint. I totally enjoyed this twisty domestic thriller, with it’s unsettling events and mystery. The setting is in Tasmania, Australia. The story is fast paced and it’s a suspenseful page turner.
Former TV star Remi is newly divorced and still tied financially to her ex-husband Simon. To make ends meet after beautifully renovating her home she decides to take in two tenants. I totally enjoyed this twisty domestic thriller, with it’s unsettling events and mystery. The setting is in Tasmania, Australia. The story is fast paced and it’s a suspenseful page turner.
Former TV star Remi is newly divorced and still tied financially to her ex-husband Simon. To make ends meet after beautifully renovating her home she decides to take in two tenants. Ex Simon and his new trophy wife greedily try to force Remi to sell the property so Simon can get the portion of his investment back but she is determined to keep the house she loves.

Last year Jo Dixon blew me away with her debut novel The House of Now and Then and without a doubt her second novel lived up to all expectations.
I was captivated by this twisty mystery from the moment I began the first page, struggling to put it down as it is one of those books that will keep you guessing until the very end.
Set in Tasmania’s capital city of Hobart the main character Remi has retreated to the sanctuary of a beautiful home that she has renovated following the aftermath of a brutal attack and the breakdown of her marriage.

Jo Dixon's highly anticipated second book is slower paced than what I usually prefer but a rivetting read nonetheless. Packed full of suspense, I didn't know who to trust. A couple of red herrings here, a few twists there and my head was spinning. I did manage to pick the "baddie" early on however, but I wasn't 100% sure until I got closer to the end.
The last third of the book is an absolute page turning experience and I couldn't put it down until I was done!

Remi’s economic position also pushes her to take in tenants she never wanted. But when a series of incidents occur, she realises someone wants to destroy her and they won’t stop until they get what they want.
🚪Not only was I able to read this one as a buddy read with @indoor.g1rl it was also an arc copy I received with thanks from the publisher. Much like the latest novel by Jo Dixon, this second novel from the Tassie author hooked me in fairly quickly. Dixon devotes time in the early stages of her novel to building a strong sense of unease and tension and characters on the edge of sanity. What follows is a narrative that builds to a whole host of issues, problems, the airing of messy secrets, hard motives and a general sense that nothing is right in the main character’s world. This also gives Dixon the room to explore a set of themes within her narrative namely around restoration, rebuilding your life, despair, authority, power struggles, underhanded manipulation, personal safety threats, vulnerability, trauma, overcoming fear, opening yourself up to others, greed, entitlement, protection, rights and the loss of the sanctuary of your home.
🚪Dixon manages to capture the feelings of her lead thanks to her tension level, dialogue and on point character work. We gain an insight into how Remi’s mind and heart remains twisted thanks to the pressures she faces and the situations in which confronts. It was hard for me to predict what was going to happen and Dixon does pull everything together, despite any possible doubts at points of this tale.
My final and much needed word on this story is the setting. The Tasmanian backdrop gives this story extra weight and interest for me. The mix of old world beauty and the isolation of this state works to shape Remi’s rapidly changing world and altering circumstances. The landscape detail adds to the overall mood and it creates that distinct backdrop where we feel anyone or anything can materialise behind a closed door or corner!
Dixon’s prose is a distinct style, a suburban slow burn drama scope, with plenty of plot contortions and bubbling suspicion to keep you flipping the pages. A clear four star read for me! 🌟🌟🌟🌟

This is one fabulous twisty mystery thriller. I was hooked right from the first chapter

While her ex is desperate to sell their home out from under her, Remi decides to take in two new flatmates to help with the bills until she can get more work as an audio book narrator
She is still cautious of new people after a brutal attack years earlier, so even thinking about sharing a home with new people is a huge step. But Remy is desperate to keep her house and continue to renovate it
But as she starts to keep her ex at bay and make house payments again, a series or strange and scary incidents start to occur. At the beginning it appears to be a case of wrong place wrong time but soon it seems to be targeted.. on Remy. Who is out to get her?
I thoroughly enjoyed the audio book and was on the edge of my seat right up until the end. It is perfectly paced, with layers of mysterious characters plus the Hobart setting added many twists and turns throughout.

A repeat entertaining performance.
Former TV actress Remi has buried herself in fixing up her home in Hobart.
Her pride and joy is also her greatest accomplishment.
More can be said for her short but successful career in television.
Soon she runs out of money and now cannot make payments to her wealthy ex husband.
So he suggests selling and that’s a firm no from Remi.
Coming up with a quick money making strategy, Remi decides to take in tenants.
But then strange things begin to happen and it becomes apparent that someone is out to sabotage her……
2024 is starting off with a bang, with titles that are completely hard to put down and this one can be added to that list.
This read gives and delivers, gripping, engaging and exciting vibes.
Halfway through something clicked for me and I was correct in my judgement.

Absolutely read itself. I love Jo Dixon novels, real people, real crimes and I can imagine myself acting like every character! I loved being in Tasmania, I could absolutely see Remi’s home and reluctance to have anyone in her space. It’s such a twisty turning novel with so many red herrings along the way. There’s so much more to talk through but no spoilers…SO clever, so atmospheric, so glad I read it!

Atmospheric Tasmania provides the perfect setting for this engrossing psychological thriller. Herein, Jo Dixon provides strong characters that readers will become invested in and find themselves eagerly turning the pages. This is a quick and wonderfully escapist read.

For me, the greatest strength of this book is the contrasting cast of believable characters. The villains may be a little too villainous, however, Jo provides an eclectic and realistic mix of characters that really cements the tale and is sure to appeal to a wide range of readers. Good writing has you suspecting multiple people and even though I worked out early on who it might be - there is still much to unfold in the timing and events to a fitting conclusion. My favourite characters were the housemates, both very different, but added real depth and reality to the storyline.

A Shadow at the Door is a riveting, can't put it down book with some of the most deranged and narcissistic characters I have read.
Remi Lucans is getting her life back on track after a short-lived acting career, a terrible assault and the breakdown of her marriage to the uber rich Simon Harland. Renovating an old house in Hobart has been a balm for her soul.
Then her dog gets poisoned, her bank account is hacked, bad reviews appear online for her audiobook work - could they be related? Is someone out to get her?
Forced to take in tenants to keep up the payments to Simon, Remi feels like her life is no longer hers. She doesn't even know these people and maybe they are behind all the things that just keep happening.
Not knowing who to trust, wondering if it is all just coincidence, Remi is not sure if she is coming or going. Forced to rely on an old friend for support and financial backup, life seems to be starting to get back to normal.
The build up to the end of this book is spine chilling and the reveals are quite shocking. Nothing is as it seems.

Remi is throwing herself into a renovation project after a divorce and some other sad circumstances. As more and more unfortunate things continue to happen she needs to take in housemates to be able to afford her house repayments. She struggles with opening up her life but as the drama builds she ends up relying on her new friends more than she would like. In the end together they find out who is behind all the drama and get all their lives back on track together.
A good Aussie thriller for an easy weekend read. I wanted to get to the conclusion, however, it was somewhat predictable. What it does show case really well is found family dynamics in progress and strong women with conflicted hearts and minds.
I absolutely loved the Hobart setting, having been there before I was able to picture the surrounds and the weather perfectly.

A Shadow at the Door, Dixon's second suspense novel but my first read of hers, revolves around Remi who has to take in lodgers to prevent her ex from selling her house from under her. But a string of "bad luck" starts to seem more like sabotage... and it's getting increasingly sinister...
Given how much Remi didn't want housemates, I did find myself wondering why she didn't just, like.... get a job?? 😂 But ya know, I guess then there would have been no story lol. I did find her hard to like. Her guardedness is understandable but her prickliness just doesn't make her an easy character to warm to.
I did really like the housemate characters. It actually blossoms into a bit of a "found family" vibe, which isn't a trope you see often in suspense but it's one I really enjoy, and I enjoyed it here too.
The story is placed firmly in Hobart which was nice, I haven't read many books set in Tassie.
I feel strongly that thriller and suspense are different genres, and I would put this firmly in the suspense (sub)genre. Another Goodreads reviewer called it "quietly tense" and that's perfect.
If I'm honest, there weren't any reveals that surprised me in this one. I thought the "bad guy" was pretty obvious and they become a little caricature-ish in their villainy at the end. I was kinda hoping for an extra twist but none came. But I nonetheless did actually find it quite an engaging read and easy to keep picking back up.

Thoroughly enjoyed this 2nd outing from Jo Dixon, another twisty tale that lived up to expectations after her 1st book.
Remi has had a tough few years, a physical attack on her, acting career cut short and a failed marriage but she is finally getting her life on track. Except now her ex husband is calling in his part of the house she is lovingly restoring, the one she was to have for her marriage settlement.
Not wanting to loose the house, her only choice is to take in tenants, an older woman called Josephine and a young exuberant Emerson.
But when they move in, some unexplained happenings occur. Remi finds it hard to get close to people, so who can she trust?
Loved this, I found it a little slower paced in the beginning. It felt like poor Remi was getting so much muck thrown at her and I had no idea why but once that all settled I found it had a cracking pace.
I don’t want to go much into the other characters as I don’t want to unintentionally give a spoiler.
Put this or Jo Dixon’s 1st novel on your list if you’re looking for a great Aussie holiday read with plenty of twists.

Wow! What a humdinger of a book this one is. Absolutely awesome.
Remi Lucan is at the centre of the storyline and is renovating her property in Hobart, which she kept from her divorce from ex-husband Simon and she is paying off the money she owes him. Remi has been keeping to herself since her divorce, but with pressure from Simon, and new wife Kayla, for all the money to be repaid, she decides to take in a couple of borders in Josephine and Emerson to help with her money situation.
Remi has had a couple of strange unexplained things happen and immediately after the borders move in, more unexplained events happened more frequently.
The final straw is when she is home alone and hears a noise downstairs. She looks out her window to see a person running away from her house right before a fire starts in the basement.
Depressed at her lack of luck Remi is invited away with her friend of twenty years, Luke, and decides to go away for the weekend away. Upon returning she’s ready to sell her house and move on. But this is when all hell breaks loose.

My thoughts :
- i loved it as it was filled with tension, intense and heart stopping moments
- i couldn't put down this book at all as i was tossing through the pages on who did it?
- fast turning pages

At first her biggest problem nis adjusting to the intrusion of to unlikely housemates, but when a series of 'accidents' turns ugly, it becomes clear these incidents are more than pranks. Someone is out to get Remi, and they wont stop until they destroy her......
