After an earthquake strikes collapses trapping a group of kids out on a field trip on a costal island. They struggle to escape and then duscover their supplies destroyed. Survival is on the line and they must survive and find a way to save themselves.
Well written and offers a wide range of emotions as they struggle to find food, shelter and escape from the island. Join their struggle and see if you would do as well.
My rating of "Stay Alive #2: Cave-In" is 4.75 out of 5 stars.
This was pretty bleak. There were deaths, annoying characters, and a dismal situation. I know it's a survival story and it wasn't supposed to be a feel-good read, but geeze! I can't decide if my students would like this or not. I guess we'll see.
2 Stars. It was an ok, easy read. Just not super interesting, ya know? Wasnt on the edge of my seat, and the characters actions were way far from what would actually happen in real life. They all had "the prefect skill-set".
This stay alive series was a fast and entertaining read that had great action and enough realism to give me pause. I remember as a sixth grader wanting real stuff and this book has it. The stay alive series (I read two books in it it and I will read the other two) had some commonalities. The characters were different from book to book, but essentially a group of people are pitted against the wild (in this case a cave in) and the stress brings out the best and worst in the group and forces them to confront basic decisions like how to make shelter, how to care of injured people with limited resources, how to prioritize and some people are killed which is realistic.
I don't know if this book would give a sensitive child nightmares but I do think this book would give a kid that likes Gary Paulsen and Hatchet type books a larger canon to choose from. I really liked it. It was not as well written as Paulsen or Will Hobbs, but it was still a great story and a page turner and I'm glad I bought it. I will donate it to my son's classroom and recommend it to other kids looking for action, adventure and gritty survival stories.
When a bunch of students go off the coast of Maine to Hogs Island they didn't expect much. Just a lot of birds and learning how to build a fire and survival skills, right? What they didn't expect is when they were looking at an old WWII bunker an earthquake occurs. It destroys the old foundation near the exit and seals them in. They listen in horror as the boulders from the bunker that were torn loose come crashing down and flattens all of their tents and supplies. They were supposed to sleep at at the island for the weekend, so who knows when their boat comes back to pick them up. They had no way of telling time and didn't bring any supplies thinking that it would only be a couple of minutes. Do a group of boys and girls with two adults have what it takes to get back home. I did not like this book as much as I thought I would. It wasn't very full of suspense and action. The author was mainly writing about what happened in the character's head. It might be a good book for slow pace reader's but action lovers might want to overlook this one.
Stay Alive! So glad this is a series. I'm always looking for books to hook my boys into reading (girls will enjoy it, too). This will appeal to those who loved the "I Survived" series, though these seem to be written for a more mature crowd (10-14).
The characters were real. Some of them stepped up and others sunk to new lows in the face of adversity. The setting made the action easy to follow. Survival Tips...in case you're ever in this situation...were icing on the cake.
I liked the first one better. The characters aren't memorable and I was going to talk about a character I hated, but I can't remember her name, meaning once again. It's not a memorable story. Actually, I didn't really like any of the characters. The characters were just plain dumb and annoying. It also seemed as if the author didn't invest any time structuring the story. This book was terribly slow. It took me about 1 month and 1 day to read this stupid book. (Aug. 19th-Sep. 18th) The first book was better.
I'm sure this book would appeal to the 4th-7th grade age range it is intended for. I was disappointed in the character development. They all pretty much stayed the same and I hoped especially Sandy would show some kind of growth and maturity after her experience. I was so surprised there wasn't any emotion shown when two of the characters can be presumed dead. I did like the way the author passed the story back and forth between the different characters. It was a fun book to read and I have students in mind to pass it on to!

I really enjoyed the first Stay Alive, Crash, and was very excited to get this one and start reading it. Unfortunately, I don't think this was one was nearly as good as the first. The characters, plot and setting in this one felt thin and rushed. The plot also required a lot more suspension of disbelief than in the first book. However, I think the target audience of 3-5 grade will still enjoy this and the survival tips that are interspersed with the story.
When a class takes a disastrous field trip to a deserted island in Maine to camp, they walk into an old concrete building and it collapses! They have to dig their way out to survive.
I liked this book because they had to work together to survive
I recommend this book to readers that like suspense and survival.
This book is a dream come true! it tells a story of a group of kids who survive a life changing earthquake. After the earquake hit the kids were trapped in a cave in Maine with no supplies. This story teaches a theme to never give up and to fight till the end. This was a field trip that went totally wrong!
Reminded me of the books of both Andrew Clement (explaining everything from different perspectives) & Gary Paulson (harrowing adventures when kids have to step by to challenges to survive). Good read!
This book was a suspenseful survival book. I loved every bit of it. While on an island for a field trip, six kids get trapped in a cave. All their supplies are on the other side. How will they live?
I read this as a Read Aloud to my 8th graders. Great survival story. Many of the students chose to read other books in the series- isn't that what every teacher wants?
