Except this wasn’t the exact book I read. The one I read was called “The story of a regiment, The history of the 179th Regimental combat” by Warren P Munsell. I found it at https://digicom.bpl.lib.me.us. It was about 250 pages long and extremely interesting to me. My great uncle was in this regiment and they were an extremely decorated one. He died in or near LaSalle France and he had been with this regiment as a medic for almost a year. They started out with Patton in Sicily, then beached at Salerno, Italy, then Anzio Italy and then southern France. They were the ones to take Nürnberg and Munich France. The heart of Nazism. There are other histories of other regiments and if you have ancestors who fought in World War II or any war. All you have to do is search the regiment. They all had their historians with them.
I have been researching my grandpa's involvement in WWII for the last year or so and had many questions that were to remain unanswered or so I thought. That was until I found this book. Having said that I found the book more difficult to read than I had expected simply because of the personal connection as it is the story of my grandpa's regiment during WWII. The book was written by G.L. Cassidy who was the commanding officer of the regiment, it is very well written. It is a brutal story, full of detail and loss. I am amazed at what these soldiers went thru, I am shocked by the number of men that died in this regiment after reading this book I have a new respect and appreciation for my grandpa.
