About the author

Sunil Gangopadhyay (Bengali: সুনীল গঙ্গোপাধ্যায়) was a famous Indian poet and novelist. Born in Faridpur, Bangladesh, Gangopadhyay obtained his Master's degree in Bengali from the University of Calcutta, In 1953 he started a Bengali poetry magazine Krittibas. Later he wrote for many different publications.

Ganguly created the Bengali fictional character Kakababu and wrote a series of novels on this character which became significant in Indian children's literature. He received Sahitya Academy award in 1985 for his novel Those Days (সেই সময়). Gangopadhyay used the pen names Nil Lohit, Sanatan Pathak, and Nil Upadhyay.

Works:
Author of well over 200 books, Sunil was a prolific writer who has excelled in different genres but declares poetry to be his "first love". His Nikhilesh and Neera series of poems (some of which have been translated as For You, Neera and Murmur in the Woods) have been extremely popular.

As in poetry, Sunil was known for his unique style in prose. His first novel was Atmaprakash (আত্মপ্রকাশ) and it was also the first writing from a new comer in literature published in the prestigious magazine- Desh (1965).The novel had inspiration from ' On the road' by Jack Kerouac. His historical fiction Sei Somoy (translated into English by Aruna Chakravorty as Those Days) received the Indian Sahitya Academy award in 1985. Shei Somoy continues to be a best seller more than two decade after its first publication. The same is true for Prothom Alo (প্রথম আলো, also translated recently by Aruna Chakravorty as First Light), another best selling historical fiction and Purbo-Paschim (পূর্ব-পশ্চিম, translated as East-West) a raw depiction of the partition and its aftermath seen through the eyes of three generations of Bengalis in West Bengal, Bangladesh and elsewhere. He is also the winner of the Bankim Puraskar (1982), and the Ananda Puraskar (twice, in 1972 and 1989).

Sunil wrote in many other genres including travelogues, children's fiction, short stories, features, and essays. Though he wrote all types of children's fiction, one character created by him that stands out above the rest, was Kakababu, the crippled adventurer, accompanied by his Teenager nephew Santu, and his friend Jojo. Since 1974, Sunil Gangopadhyay wrote over 35 novels of this wildly popular series.

Death:
Sunil Gangopadhyay died at 2:05 AM on 23 October 2012 at his South Kolkata residence, following a heart attack. He was suffering from prostate cancer for some time and went to Mumbai for treatment. Gangopadhyay's body was cremated on 25 October at Keoratola crematorium, Kolkata.

He was honored with Ananda Award (1972, 1979) and Sahitya Academy Award (1984).

উপন্যাসটিকে কোন নির্দিষ্ট জনরায় ফেলা মুশকিল- পুরোপুরি থ্রিলারও বলা যায় না আবার প্রেমকাহিনীর তালিকায়ও ফেলা যায় না। খানিকটা সাস্পেন্স তৈরি করেছে উপন্যাসটা তবে কোথাও একটা কিন্তু রয়ে গেছে!

অচেনা মানুষ অন্য ধরণের উপন্যাস যেখানে পাঠক সব সময় উদগ্রীব হয়ে থাকে এরপরে কী হবে!!
লেখক নিজ জীবনের অভিজ্ঞতা কে উপন্যাসে রূপ দিয়েছেন।ঘরোয়া পরিবেশ আর বাইরে বৃষ্টি তারমধ্যে বসেছে গল্পের আসর।লেখক আজ একজন শ্রোতা এবং অন্যদের ন্যায়
তিনি ও খুব উত্তেজিত।

লেখক খুব মনোযোগ দিয়ে গল্প শুনছেন। কর্নেল সেন (লেখকের বন্ধুর মামা) বলেছেন, তার চাকুরী জীবনে ঘটে যাওয়া অদ্ভুত এক রম্যঞ্চকর গল্প।ঘটনাটি যেহেতু এক ডাক বাংলো কে কেন্দ্র করে ঘটেছিল,সেহেতু উপস্থিত শ্রোতাদের উৎসাহের কমতি ছিল না।বিহারের কোন এক জায়গায় কাজের জন্য গিয়েছিল কর্নেল সেন তখন তার বয়স ৩৫; রাত হয়ে গেলে বাধ্য হয়ে তিনি আশ্রয় নেন এক বাংলোতে।শুরু থেকে মিঃ সেনের গা ছমছম করছিল তার উপরে চৌকিদারের অদ্ভুত আচরণ সব কিছু নিয়ে দারুণ বিরক্ত তিনি।শরীর ভাল না থাকায় নিরুপায় হয়ে তিনি বাংলো তে উঠলেন। তারপরে তার জীবনে এমন কিছু ঘটে গেল যে,না চাইতে তিনি জরিয়ে গেলেন এক মহা সমস্যাতে।কী হয়েছিল কর্নেল সেনের সাথে জানতে হলে পরতে হবে টানটান উত্তেজনাকর এই উপন্যাসটি।
পরিশেষে বলবো, যারা সত্যিকারের গোয়েন্দা ধাঁচের বই ভালবাসেন বইটি তাদের জন্য,তো আর বিলম্ব কেন পড়েই ফেলুন।

সুনীলবাবুর লেখার অন্ধভক্ত হয়েও লেখাটা অতটা ভালো লাগলো না৷ হয়তো অতটাও অন্ধ নই। 😁

আসলে এটা যে কোন ঘরানার সেটা ঠিক করা মুসকিল। ঠিক গোয়েন্দা গল্পও না, আবার ঠিক প্রেমেরও না। চরিত্রগুলোকেও মনে হয় খুব দূরের কেউ - 'অচেনা মানুষে'র মতনই। একবার পড়তে খারাপ লাগবে না। মনে আঁচ কেটে যাওয়ার মত ইন্ধন যদিও পেলাম না এতে।

"কে যেন আমার ভেতর থেকে তাকিয়ে থাকে... আমি তাকেই চিনি না।"
এই একটি বাক্যেই লুকিয়ে আছে সুনীল গঙ্গোপাধ্যায়ের কালজয়ী উপন্যাস অচেনা মানুষ-এর আসল দর্শন।
এই নামটা শুনলেই বুকের ভেতরটা চিনচিন করে ওঠে। মনে হয়—কেউ যেন খুব নরম অথচ গভীর হাতে আমার অস্তিত্বটাকে নাড়ায়। অচেনা মানুষ কেবল একটি উপন্যাস নয়, এটি এক আত্মজিজ্ঞাসার কবিতা। প্রতিটি পৃষ্ঠা যেন এক অদৃশ্য দরজা, যেটি খুললেই আমরা পৌঁছে যাই নিজের ভিতরের সেই মানুষটার কাছে—যে আমাদের খুব চেনা, অথচ সবচেয়ে বেশি অচেনা।
এই উপন্যাসের প্রতিটি চরিত্র যেন আমাদের পাশের ঘরের কেউ। তারা হাসে, কাঁদে, প্রতারণা করে, ভালোবাসে—আর তাদের প্রতিটি আবেগ আমাদের হৃদয়ে প্রতিধ্বনিত হয়। বিশেষ করে কেন্দ্রীয় চরিত্রটির আত্মান্বেষণের মুহূর্তগুলো এতটাই বাস্তব যে, পাঠক যেন আয়নায় নিজেরই মুখোমুখি হয়ে যান। কারণ চরিত্রেরা কাগজে আঁকা নয়—তারা রক্তমাংসের।
সুনীলের লেখনী ঠিক যেন রঙতুলির মতো। তার বাক্যগুলো কখনো সরল, কখনো গভীর, কিন্তু প্রতিবারই পাঠকের হৃদয়ে এক ধাক্কা দিয়ে যায়। তিনি যখন জীবনের নিস্তরঙ্গ কথাও বলেন, তা হয়ে ওঠে কবিতার মতো তীব্র ও মর্মস্পর্শী। এই বই পড়তে পড়তে পাঠক বারবার থেমে যেতে বাধ্য হন—শুধু একটা লাইন পড়ে ভাবতে হয়, “আহা, এত সহজ করে এত গভীর কথা কেউ বলে কী করে?”
এই উপন্যাস আমাদের মুখোমুখি দাঁড় করিয়ে দেয় এমন সব প্রশ্নের, যেগুলোর উত্তর আমরা হয়তো আজও দিইনি।
“আমি কে?”
“আমার ভেতরের মানুষটা কেমন?”
“যাকে আমি ভালোবাসি, সে কি আসলেই আমার চেনা?”
এই সব প্রশ্ন একেকটি ঢেউয়ের মতো এসে ধাক্কা মারে, আর পাঠক ধীরে ধীরে ডুবে যেতে থাকেন সেই আত্মানুসন্ধানের সাগরে।
মানে চেনা-অচেনার দোলাচলে জীবন।
অচেনা মানুষ শেষ করার পর মনে হলো আমি শুধু একটি গল্প পড়ে শেষ করলাম না—বরং এক অনন্ত যাত্রায় পা রাখলাম, যেখানে চেনা জগৎ আর অচেনা মন একাকার হয়ে যায়। এই বইয়ের শেষে আপনি যেমন একটি চরিত্রকে চিনবেন, তেমনই চিনে ফেলবেন নিজের ভেতরের সেই মানুষটিকেও—যাকে এতদিন অবহেলায় পাশ কাটিয়ে গেছেন।
‘অচেনা মানুষ’ এমন একটি উপন্যাস যা পাঠকের হৃদয়ে স্থায়ী ছাপ ফেলে যায়। এটি একাধারে দর্শনের আয়না, সাহিত্যের গান, আর আত্মার প্রতিচ্ছবি। যারা জীবনকে অনুভব করতে চান, সম্পর্কের জটিলতা বোঝেন, কিংবা নিঃশব্দ প্রশ্নের উত্তর খুঁজে বেড়ান—তাদের জন্য এই বই মাস্ট রিড।

এই রিভিউ পড়ার পর যদি মনে হয়—"এই তো! এমন কিছুই তো খুঁজছিলাম!"—তাহলে দেরি না করে বইটা হাতে তুলে নিন।
ডুব দিন সুনীলের সৃষ্ট সেই অনন্ত গহীনে, যেখানে "অচেনা" এবং "চেনা" একাকার হয়ে যায়...
কারণ, কে জানে, আপনারও ভেতরে লুকিয়ে আছে এক অচেনা মানুষ।

Though the genre of this novella is thriller, yet it doesn't perfectly within the rigid framework of conventional thriller. The writing is quite self-reflexive, for time and again the readers are reminded that what they are reading is not merely a fictional account but a lived experience of the raconteur's. One of the distinguishing features of this novella is that the second half is recounted by a narrator who was not present in the scene of the lived experiences of the original narrator. The second narrator, who is Sunil Gangopadhyay himself, is instigated by the original narrator, Colonel Sen, to complete the narration by using his imaginative and creative prowess. The plot was interesting and kept me hooked on till the last page. The writing is also fast-paced and accessible. The characters are meticulously sketched and given multiple dimensions, which is a rarity in thriller stories, where most of the characters are usually one dimensional. What I especially liked about this book is that the author has not fallen into the trap of presenting the criminals/villians as outright black characters but rather has reiterated their moral greyishness. Overall, it was an enjoyable book. It can be especially enjoyed when read on a warm, cosy bed in a chilly, rainy night, since the ambience of the book also evokes such a rainy, suspenseful night.

রাতে ঘুম আসছিল না। হাতের কাছে না পড়া এই বইটা পেয়ে পড়তে বসে গেলাম। আমার আবার একটা বদ অভ্যাস আছে, বই পড়তে শুরু করলে যদি ভাল বই না হয় সেটা আমার জন্য ঘুমের ওষুধের মত কাজ করে- দু’চার পাতা পড়লেই ঘুমের দেশে হারিয়ে যাই। বই ভাল না খারাপ তার ধারণা নিতে গুডরিডসে ঢুঁ মারলাম। রিভিউ নেই, তবে পুরোপুরি আশাহত হতে হল না কম রেটিংয়ের জন্য- বেশ তাড়াতাড়ি একটা জম্পেশ ঘুম দেয়া যাবে। বইটা আমি পড়তে যখন বসি তখন বাজে রাত দুটো।

মফস্বল শহরের এক বাংলো বাড়িতে একটা খুন হয়। খুনীদের প্রমাণ লোপাটের মাঝে এসে হাজির হন কর্ণেল সেন। পুলিশকে চাপ দিয়ে সেই খুনের রহস্য সমাধান করেন তিনি। বেশ সাদামাটা একটা প্লট। তবে গল্পের বর্ণনাশৈলী অসাধারণ। মনে হয় আমি যেন বসে আছি কর্ণেল সেনের সামনে, বাই���ে মুষলধারে বৃষ্টি, আর একদৃষ্টিতে তাকিয়ে গল্প শুনে যাচ্ছি তার মুখে। আর মাঝে মাঝে চেষ্টা করছি খুন কার হলো, কে-ই বা করল, কেনই বা করল- এসব খুঁজে বের করতে।

বইটা পড়তে শুরু করলে শেষ না করে ওঠা যাবে না। অবশেষে বইটার ইতি টেনে যখন চোখ বোজার চেষ্টা করছি তখন ঘড়িতে তাকিয়ে দেখি ঘড়ির কাঁটা পাঁচের কাছাকাছি -সবই স্লো রিডার হওয়ার কুফল। ভাবলাম, এতকাল তো মানুষের লেখা রিভিউই পড়লাম, আজ জীবনের প্রথম একটা রিভিউ লিখেই আসা যাক! যেই ভাবা সেই কাজ- লিখে ফেললাম জীবনের প্রথম বুক রিভিউ।

যাহ্! আজও সকাল হয়ে গেল ঘুমোতে! যাই, ঘুমোতে যাই। গুড নাইট! :v

This Novel is a masterpiece. I"m enjoy it so much. Just I want to say, it's wonderful. every character is so deep, like an ocean. This type of detective novel in Bengali literature I must say is rare. Every moment I feel something happened knw? what would happen? In every line, I just feel something will happen?

This Is a detective genre Novel.. There is a lot of suspense in the life of every character. In this novel characters names, kabiri, surjulal, kornel, ronjon, madobi, Sunil, and a lot of people who played mystery roles in this novel.

A Cornel once he struck in Strom so he wanted to go in govt banglo. When he went there he saw No one. So he yelled, where is the Guard? Guard came and he refused to give him the room. But Cornel said, why? after he enters the room he smells something suspicious. he finds a dead body under the bed. Who's a dead body? why its there?

I don't want to elaborate on this novel much. Just want to tell you, that this is awesome. No one is bored!

বিলো এভারেজ৷ পড়তে ভালোই লাগবে, তবে মনে দাগ কেটে যাওয়ার মত না৷ প্রথম দিকে ঠিকঠাকই ছিল৷ পরে ঘটনার ব্যাখ্যাটা যেভাবে দিলো সেটা ঠিক মনমতো হলো না৷ কাউকে রেকমেন্ড করি না,তারপরও মন চাইলে পড়তে পারেন৷ একেবারে খারাপও না৷ পার্সোনাল রেটিং,২.৫/৫৷
