this was recommended to me by Hilary Mantel. It describes the activities of a doctor practising in Manchester from 1960 to 1963. it is written in simple and easily understood English and was obviously written as a diary/record with no view to being published. while much of the book is devoted to a description of patients and treatment, there are many references to activities quite unrelated to medicine such as national news, prices, social activities and even investments. for those interested in Manchester or in the history of medicine, it would be particularly interesting. For myself, it is the stark truth of how one man manages his life which gives its appeal.
