She also began her book collection at age 15. When given the chance to travel, Sasson accepted a position at the King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre in Riyadh, and lived in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for 12 years. Set in Kuwait, 'Yasmeena's Choice' is a graphic account of war crimes committed by Iraqi soldiers. The focus of Ms. Sasson's work is the lives of women in the Middle East. Accordingly, this book is centered on the experience of Yasmeena, a young Lebanese woman that is in Kuwait at the time of the Iraqi invasion. After surviving a harrowing experience, she tells her story, bringing these atrocities to light.
Yasmeena is a flight attendant and it is only by chance that she finds herself in Kuwait on the day that Iraq invades it's much smaller and more peaceful neighbor. She had agreed to trade shifts with a coworker. It's funny how sometimes the small, seemingly mundane events in our lives often have the ability to set off a chain of events that is unforeseeable. This small act of kindness toward a coworker ends up being the most significant decision of Yasmeena's life.
When the Iraqis invade, Yasmeena finds herself stranded in besieged country. She runs into a family friend, who invites her to stay with him and his family at their home while they wait out the Iraqis. At this point, everyone is sure that the invasion will be very short-term. Nobody could have predicted that the occupation would have gone on for so long before other nations intervened.
Stopped at a road block, Yasmeena is arrested and sent to a prison of sorts. However, this prison houses only female prisoners and their sole purpose is to satisfy the sexual urges of the Iraqi soldiers. Nothing was off-limits. When a soldier tired of his chosen victim, he just killed her and took another one. It was despicable.
Not surprisingly, this was an incredibly difficult story to read. The author did not hold back. This book is meant to upset and outrage readers and it certainly hit it's mark. Yasmeena's accounts of life as a female prisoner for her and the other girls under the Iraqi soldiers was horrifying.
This book serves to raise awareness and shine a light on one of the brutal realities of war -- the crimes against women and children. The torture and rape of civilians, particularly women and children, is not something unique to Iraqi soldiers or this particular war. Yet, it is a topic that few dare to address. It is the worst kept "dirty little secret" of war that nobody wants to discuss. However, if it continues to be hidden away and ignored, then there is no hope for change.
Despite the brutality of this story, I think that it was an important book. It is a call to action, forcing readers to think about the plight of women in this war-torn region of the world. More importantly, it exposes the human side of these crimes and the emotional impact on the victims, making it harder to dehumanize them. Books like this one are painful, but necessary.

كعراقي يمكن لي أن أغيّر اسم هذهِ الرواية إلى "عارنا في الكويت".. ربما كانت حقيقة أن الذي ذاقه الكويتيين في سبعة أشهر قد تجرعه أبناء وطني في 35 سنة..
الرواية بشكل عام مؤلمة جداً.. فيها كمية كبيرى من الأسى أكثر مما في "ميادة بنت العراق" أو "مغامرة حب في بلاد ممزقة" رغم أن الروايتين السابقتين يساعدان برسم بعض الصورة..
أدعو جميع القراء لقراءة "خيار ياسمينا" ليطلعوا على بعض ما ذاقه الكويتيين -ومن شاء له سوء حظه أن يكون في الكويت- في أيام الغزو، وأن يحاول تخيل الآلام التي عاشها الشعب العراقي في ظل نظام شمولي شيد مجده بجماجم الضعفاء..

تدور أحداث الرواية حول فترة الغزو على الكويت ويتناول واقع ذلك الغزو على شخصيتين أساسيتين الأولى لبنانية ساقها حظها العاثر أن تحتجز في بلد تم غزوه على حين غرة والأخرى شخصية شابة كويتية وضعتها الظروف في مواجهة الغزو دون خيار بالهرب.

الكويت ذلك البلد الحبيب والجار الطيب الذي كان ولا يزال محبوباً من دول الجوار وصاحب الأيادي البيضاء التي غمرت دول الجوار على مر العصور .. كيف واجه تلك المحنة وكيف خرج منها منتصراً إمام عدوان غاشم من حاكم وصف بأنه خليفة لـ هتلر.

👩🏼⚖️"ياسمينا" شخصية بطلة الرواية، فتاة في الثالث وعشرين عام وهي الأيمة البكر بين أربعة بنات حظيت في موطنها لبنان بعائلة محبة لها وقد كانت تتمتع بالجاذبية والذكاء الحاد والأخلاق الرفيعة التي مكنتها من قبول عائلتها فكرة عملها كـ مضيفة طيران وهي لا تزال عزباء، تعرض عليها أحدى زملائها المناوبة عنها في رحلة الطيران والتي ستحل في دولة الكويت.

حظها العاثر ينجلي عندما تكون في الكويت أثناء الغزو العراقي المباغت فجراً!! فكيف تكون واقعة الصدمة عليها؟! من هي العائلة التي ألتقت بها هناك وفيما قدمت لهم من مساعدة؟! وما الثمن الذي دفعته بالمقابل؟! ما الصعوبات التي واجهتها مع المحتل وما الثمن الذي دفعته ؟! وهل ستتجوا من تلك القبضة الشرسة ؟!

👩🏻💼"لانا" الفتاة التي في عمر السادسة عشر، الكويتية التي بسبب ما لم تتمكن من مغادرة البلاد فترة الغزو لتبقى مع من بقي من عائلتها وتواجه مصيراً من أبشع ما يمكن أن تتخيله!! ما هو هذا المصير وكيف واجهته لانا ؟! كيف التقت بـ "ياسمينا" وما اثر هذا اللقاء في الصمود تجاه تلك المعاناة؟! وهل ستنجو منه لاحقاً ؟! .

#تقييم_الرواية:

أنه العمل الأول الذي أقراءه للكتابة رغم شد إنتباهي حول ما تطرح من أعمال تنحصر في معاناة تقع على الدول العربية تحديداً فكانت هذه التجربة الأولى التي ستجعلني حتماً أصافح بقية أعمالها.
.
رغم قراءتي لكتب تتناول جوانب الحرب والدمار الناجم منه وتركيزي خلال هذا الشهر بالذات على القراءة في مجالات متقاربة من الحرب وآثارها فإنني أقول وبكل إقتناع أن هذا الكتاب كان أكثرها إيلاماً بالنسبة لي.

الترجمة كانت ممتازة، والأسلوب في السرد رغم تغيره فأنت ستقرأ أحيانا على لسان الشخصية وأحيانا على لسان المؤلفة ولكن ذلك ايضا سيجعلك تقرأ دون تشتت أو حيرة.
.
وسترى أيضاً في أواخر الكتاب ملاحق منها ما تطرق لتاريخ الكويت ومنها ما تطرق لتاريخ العراق وجزءً يستعرض آراء مقتبسة من أعمال أخرى للمؤلفة كـ "ميادة أبنة العراق" وكتاب "إغتصاب الكويت" والذي سبق هذا الكتاب بفترة زمنية طويلة وتناول جانب آخر سلط الضوء على شخصيات كويتية هاجرة أثناء الغزو في حين هذا الكتاب أهتم بمن بقى في الكويت أثناء الغزو ولذا اعتبره نوعاً ما مكمل لذلك الكتاب.

وأنا أقرأ هذا الألم .، وهذا الوجع .، دار في بالي سؤال: لماذا يتم نشر أحداث كهذه ؟! كلنا نعرف تبعات الحروب ومخلفاتها .، والحالة النفسية التي يمر بها البلد ومواطنوه .، كلنا نعرف الجرائم التي تحدث .، بما فيها جرائم الاغتصاب للأسف الشديد .، هذه المسألة الحساسة جداً جداً .، فهي موضوع دقيق للغاية في عالمنا الإسلامي .، ونرى كيفية حماية النساء من هذه الجرائم .، سؤالي والحيرة التي تراودني: لماذا يتم نشر هذه الجرائم ؟! حتى لو كانت الأسماء مستعارة .، وحتى لو كانت إحداهن من سردت الأحداث .، إن كانت هي تمتلك الشجاعة وتريد بذلك فضح الطرف الآخر .، هناك كثيرات لا يمكنهن سرد ما حدث .، حالاتهن النفسية لا تسمح بذلك .، وعاداتهن وتقاليدهن تمنعهن من ذلك .، أعتقد يكفي أن نقول: حدثت جرائم اغتصاب .، ليس كل شيء يصح توثيقه .، بل هناك من الأشياء ما ينبغي دفنها ودفن تفاصيلها تحت عجلة الأيام .! تصوروا معي .، لو كانت أمك أو جدتك أو عمتك أو خالتك من مرت بهذه التجربة .، فهل ستقول بعد خمسين سنة: وكانت أمي ممن اغتصبها المجرمون ؟! نحن لسنا في مجتمع أوربي أو ما شابه .، نحن في مجتمع محافظ له قيمه وعاداته وتقاليده .، ولا يصح طرح مثل هذه القضايا على الملأ بحجة التوثيق .، نعم .، ما حدث في الخليج .، وتحديداً في الغزو العراقي على الكويت .!

فلنقل أن الإنسان من الممكن أن يصل إلى درجة من التوحش وانعدام الغيرة والقيم بما يخجل منه الخنزير والقرد .، ولكنني أتساءل .، لماذا ؟! كيف؟! لماذا يصل إلى حضيض الدناءة ؟! كيف وصل إلى حضيض الدناءة ؟! ماذا فعل في الكويت حقراء الرئيس العراقي المقبور صدام ؟!
أفعال يشيب منها الجنين في بطن أمه .، بالفعل لست قادرة على تصور إمكان أن يكون ذلك من إنسان .، #خيار_ياسمينا إحدى القصص الحقيقية والتي تم إخفاؤها عن وسائل الإعلام العالمية .، قصة حرب .، اغتصاب .، شجاعة وصراع من أجل البقاء .، "ياسمينا" المرأة التي استطاعت أن تسرد وقائع أحداث ما تعرضت له هي مع النساء اللواتي معها في السجن من تعذيب جسدي واغتصاب خلال غزو العراق على الكويت .، مؤلم .، أليس كذلك ؟! لذلك كان تساؤلي لماذا تنشر مثل هذه الجرائم .، حتى لو كان اله��ف فضح هؤلاء الوحوش .، ولكن سرد الوقائع مؤلم .، مؤلم جداً .، تذكّر الأحداث يترك في نفوسنا غصة كبيرة .، فـ كيف بمن شهدها وعاشها ؟!
كان الله في عون "ياسمينا" و "لانا" .، وكل النساء اللواتي تعرضن لهذا الوجع والألم .!
حفظ الله بلاد المسلمين من كل شر .، وقاتل الله الحروب التي دمرت بها البشرية نفسها .!

'A Escolha de Yasmeena' é um daqueles livros difíceis de classificar; se tivermos em conta a história que partilha é completamente censurável e inapropriado dar 'estrelinhas' a um sofrimento destes…
Lê-lo foi uma experiência excruciante, exigindo-me paragens regulares para estabilizar os nervos. A violação de mulheres em tempo de conflitos armados está longe de ser novidade mas nunca deixa de ser revoltante. É insondável o que vai na cabeça destes homens para cometerem actos hediondos como os que são descritos neste livro…Ou talvez a pergunta correta seja a inversa: o que falta na cabeça destas 'pessoas'?
A 8 de Agosto de 1990 o exército iraquiano inicia a ocupação do Kuwait, uma ocupação que viria a durar 208 dias - o bastante para infligir vários suplícios à população kuwaitiana e deixar o país em ruínas. Empobrecidos pela guerra contra o Irão, os iraquianos começam de imediato a saquear lojas e casas para roubo de dinheiro, jóias, electrodomésticos, móveis, animais de estimação (!)…e mulheres.
Uma destas mulheres é a inteligente e perspicaz Yasmeena, de 23 anos. Dona de uma beleza singular, Yasmeena trabalhava como assistente de bordo há dois anos, desfrutando de uma liberdade vedada à maioria das suas conterrâneas. Enquanto ajudava a resistência, Yasmeena é raptada para uma prisão improvisada onde as mulheres são mantidas em celas, espancadas e violadas diariamente, mais do que uma vez por dia, e executadas quando o seu violador se cansa delas.
É aqui que Yasmeena conhece Lana - uma jovem cujo sofrimento às mãos do seu violador não tem medida - e é também aqui que Yasmeena faz a sua escolha: viver.

أولا اعترف انني توقفت عن قراءة الكتاب عند انتهاء قصة ياسمينا ولم أتمكن من مواصلة قراءة حقائق الاغتصاب والحرب التي دونتها الكاتبة
ثانيا اود ان اشكر المترجم على ترجمة الكتاب بشكل ممتاز جعلني اتألم وأحزن لقراءة ما حدث وان اشكر الكاتبة على جهودها العديدة في إيصال أصوات النساء اللواتي تعرضن للاغتصاب. شكرا جين لتخصيص كتاب كامل عن قصة ياسمينا ولتوثيق جميع الحقائق.

Readers should be warned that Yasmeena's Choice relates a tale of unmitigated brutality that stretches credulity. Assuming this story is in fact true, I read this choice of presentation as a call to action in analogous international events. The horror of this story compels the reader to recognize the horror of rape and other war crimes. While a harrowing read, the book serves a valuable purpose in forcefully awakening the reader's sympathy...and outrage.

June 26, 2016آلمني بشدة هذا الكتاب ولكن في نفس الوقت شعرت بالاعتزاز والامتنان لله عز وجل أنني ولدت في هذه الأرض الطيبة التي لم تزيدها الحرب إلا قوة وتماسك بين شعبها، ولدت مع تحرير الكويت لذلك لم أعاصر تلك الأيام العصيبة ولكنني أعلم يقيناً أننا وإن اختلفنا في أسماءنا ..ومذاهبنا.. وإن بث الحاقدون حقدهم علينا ستبقى الكويت مزدهرة وشجرة مثمرة في قلب كل كويتي محب

Para ler este livro é preciso ter coragem. O livro é extremamente chocante.
No entanto aconselho a sua leitura a quem se sinta preparado, pois retrata uma triste realidade que ainda hoje, se calhar neste preciso momento, se continua a passar.
A tamanha violência com que mulheres árabes são tratadas exactamente por homens também árabes, é inimaginável. Este livro em particular conta a história de Yasmeena, uma bela rapariga libanesa que foi sequestrada por iraquianos, quando o Iraque decide invadir o Kuwait. A partir dai a jovem de 21 anos passa meses numa prisão onde o seu único propósito é servir de escrava sexual ao seu 'dono'. Ela e as outras raparigas da prisão são expostas diáriamente a repetidas violações, a actos de extrema violência, falta de comida e de higiene.
Nunca me interessei muito por ler livros sobre histórias veridicas, mas este por alguma razão chamou-me à atenção. E ainda bem, pois com certeza fiquei a ver muita coisa de uma forma diferente.

هذا الكتاب يحكي جرائم اغتصاب جيش صدام للنساء أثناء غزو الكويت. الكتاب يتكلم بشكل تفصيلي عن الاعتداءات الجنسية التي لاحقت إحدى الضحايا أثناء الغزو و هو مكتوب بشكل تقرير أخباري أكثر منه رواية أو وصف لحالة معاناة انسانية.
خيار ياسمينا بالحياة رغم كل الظروف تسبب لها بمعاناة من نوع آخر و هو ما نتعرف عليه خلال قراءة الأحداث.
من العيوب التي صاحبت الكتاب الملاحق الكثيرة و المطولة و اعتقد بأن الكاتبة كان بإمكانها استخدام اسلوب أفضل بالكتابة و دمج الملاحق ضمن أحداث الكتاب.
الصور توثيق مهم و لكن أجد بعض الصور المهمة غير موجودة في حين احتوى الكتاب على صفحة كاملة و صورة ملونة للجرو الذي انقذته ساسون في طريق الموت أثناء عودتها من البصرة .. و هو الكلب الذي سمته كويت و أهدته للجنود الامريكين.
أيضا وجود التسلسل الزمني ضمن الكتاب كان إضافة مميزة و لكن يعيبها عدم ذكر الأسماء الصريحة في بعض المواضع.
لا أنصح أصحاب القلوب الضعيفة بقراءة الكتاب إلا إذا وضعوا في اعتبارهم المبالغة في التفاصيل بحيث لا تكون كل الحقيقة .. أما قراءة الكتاب باعتباره حقيقة كاملة فهو مؤلم للنفس.
أرغب في قراءة كتب أخرى عن اغتصاب الكويت و للأسف هي غير متوفرة.

This is an extreme tale of human survival within pages of extreme inhuman behaviour which was inflicted upon a Middle Eastern woman who became trapped in Kuwait during the Iraqi invasion of 1990.
Yasmeena was kidnapped and subsequently raped and tortured by invading soldiers within a secret prison which housed 15 women- one woman for each sadistic soldier’s gratification under the Iraqi regime of Saddam Huieseen in the attempted taking of Kuwait as Iraq’s province 19.
Yasmeena speaks her truth about the awful circumstances of that time when she was taken. A 23 year old innocent Lebanese woman who was forced to submit to months of tortuous rape and sexual assaults along with the other woman of the prison, including the beautiful 16 year old Lana, a woman with such an amazingly courageous spirit that an entire book could be created and dedicated to her strength and spirit alone. Both women posesss extreme intelligence and courage in a world where women are treated as inferior and risk humiliation,blame and even family disownership and honor killings for bringing upon them any sexual advances-EVEN abuse.
Sasson not only pays tribute to Yasmeena and these women who were captured, but details the lead up to and history of the invasion and the war itself. Explaining the invasion made me feel closer to what was happening and able to relate with the women and captors of the prison. It’s as if 1990 happened just yesterday.. or today even.
It truly not only educated me but allowed me to connect to the FULL story of the situation Yasmeena and the country of Kuwait was in.

After the First Gulf War, Kuwait invited the writer Jean Sasson on a mission: Take a tour of the devastated land and interview survivors of Saddam Hussein's invasion of their country. Out of all the stories of despair and courage, Yasmeena's journey was the most gut-wrenching, an under-discussed issue about the horrors of men gone mad in wartime.
When the bombs fell on Kuwait on August 2, 1990, it didn't matter that Yasmeena was just a flight attendant on a layover from Lebanon--everyone in Kuwait was now trapped under Saddam Hussein's brutal regime. But Yasmeena knows she can't just cower in fear and let the Iraqis loot and rape the Kuwaiti people. Os homens que violavam estas mulheres eram homem que ainda viviam presos numa cultura em que as mulheres são objectos. Eles não consideravam os seus actos errados e profanos. Consideravam que sendo soldados longe das mulheres, e ao serviço do seu país, mereciam ter entretenimento, caso contrário não conseguiriam cumprir os seus propósitos, não considerando que estavam a fazer algo de errado. É uma realidade que temos noção que existe. Uma realidade que é abordada muito ao de leve nos meios de comunicação e que neste livro acaba por se revelar de forma chocante e directa.
É um livro que pode fazer impressão aos mais sensíveis, pois o propósito da autora é contar a história real de alguém, é abrir os olhos do mundo. E fá-lo de uma forma perfeita, conseguindo criar uma narrativa que nos agarra e nos deixa a pensar em como tal realidade ainda existe nos dias de hoje, não tão longe quando julgamos. Sasson has wanted to write this book for many years – she wanted to share with the world the story of this brave young woman. A disturbing read based on a true story. How wicked man can be in times of war. I give this book 4 stars.

Foi a minha estreia com a autora. Tinha conhecimento prévio do teor de algumas das suas obras. Ou seja, eu sabia mais ou menos ao que ia. Nunca supus é que fosse uma leitura tão dolorosa, por todos os factos que nela constam serem reais.
Historicamente, este livro aborda a invasão do Kuweit pelo Iraque, situação de que me recordo perfeitamente e de todos os seus sucedâneos. A parte final do livro dá uma visão abrangente de todos os conhecimentos, útil para quem desconheça os factos e também para quem os queira relembrar.
Por outro lado, e na sua grande essência, esta obra relata dois exemplos de um crime de guerra que ainda é pouco visto como tal: a violação. Atenção que, ao referir-me a violação, está-lhe inerente a violência física e psicológica, a tortura, o total desrespeito pelo ser humano. Yasmeena e Lara são dois dos exemplos das atrocidades que os iraquianos cometeram contras as mulheres de países inimigos. Por prismas diferentes, são duas mulheres de extrema coragem que de tudo fizeram para sobreviver nas mais horripilantes condições.
É uma leitura para gente adulta, acho. Eu, com a idade que tenho, vi-me forçada a fazer várias pausas. Isto não é ficção, é a realidade na sua forma mais cruel. Para a autora também não deve ter sido fácil passar para o papel o relato exaustivo que Yasmeena lhe fez daquilo que ela e as suas companheiras sofreram na pele. Tanto é que só conseguiu escrever o livro passados 22 anos...
Foi-me impossível dar-lhe a cotação máxima (embora em circunstâncias normais o merecesse) por toda a temática que em si encerra.
A minha vénia e o meu respeito para todas aquelas que sofreram e sofrem diariamente o que é relatado nesta narrativa. E um Basta! , também.

Jean Sasson you are an unsung hero. A woman exposing so much brutality and ugliness in the world and yet you are still unknown. You are the voice for the women silenced. You are the eyes of the women behind the veil witnessing atrocities the world is blind to. You are the courage other women draw from while they share their stories with you. You are inspiring and brave most of all a comfort to those you have encountered all over the world who have made known of their suffering and oppression.
Yasmeena is a painful story to read. I can only imagine the courage Yasmeena gathered to tell of her ordeal. Difficult to imagine a woman being brutalized and unmercifully mistreated as she suffered. The strength she demonstrated is amazing and humbling.

Shock, betrayal and unforgivable are just a few words that scream out to you while reading this book. This book describes in graphic detail the abduction of a young Lebanese woman tortured and continuously raped obediently to survive.
The young woman described in this book is one of thousands of women raped daily and her message is to make people around the globe put an end to this barbaric act. I could not put this book down. In fact I recall placing my hand over my mouth throughout most of the read in utter disgust in the torturous ways women can be brutally raped.
I urge any woman or man to take it upon yourself to mark this as a 'Must-Read' to be consciously aware of the dangers women are mostly subjected to. It should no longer be tolerated.
I want to thank Jean for having the courage to write this book as it regurgitated some painful memories. Your life's work has always purposely been to aid women by sending loud and wide messages across the globe, and here you are again through your amazing gift to write eloquently being 'The voice for the unheard'. A thought provoking read. I admire and respect you immensely.

A 8 de Agosto de 1990 o exército iraquiano invade o Kuwait. Durante 208 dias as maiores atrocidades que se podem pensar aconteceu naquele pequeno país. Quando não há mais nada para roubar e matar começam as violações em massa.
Yasmeena foi uma das muitas que sofreu na pele o terror da guerra. Durante meses foi violada das piores formas possíveis e teve de assistir, sem nada puder fazer, à morte de companheiras pelos antigos violadores. Nesses meses conhece Lana e acaba por fazer amizade com ela. Durante mais de 250 páginas conhecemos a história de Yasmeena mas também a de Lana cuja futuro não conhecemos (o mais provável é ter sido mais uma das mulheres assassinadas durante esta invasão).
Adorei este livro. A escritora contou a história tal e qual ela se passou sem ter medo do que os leitores poderiam pensar. Este é um livro que choca mas que também mostra a verdadeira face do ser humano.
Gostaria de saber o que aconteceu com Yasmeena. Se casou, se foi finalmente feliz ou se morreu. Talvez um dia as minhas perguntas tenham resposta.

Once again Jean Sasson has written a book that has broken my heart. It is so easy to bury your head and pretend that there are not atrocious things that happen in this world, but a book like this forces you to face reality. As a woman it also scares you on a level that is so primitive. My mind does not want to accept what my heart automatically reacts to. Yasmeena's a woman of great courage, faced with a decision that no one should have to make and she takes a brave and scary road. I reacted mentally and physically to the story and know that the specifics had to be told for the horror to be truly understood. The fact that this is happening in the world, NOW, as I write this....as I said, my heart is broken.
As for the writing itself, Jean Sasson always manages to make you feel the character and the story always flows.

As per usual, Sasson's has outdone herself. Her account of yasmeena is surreal and disturbing, a must-read for anyone interested in women's rights. the story details a beautiful and modern Lebanese woman, who was plucked off the streets during the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait, only to be sent to a legitimate "rape" prison. The Gulf war is not something to forgotten. The local women who suffered immensely deserve to be given their voice. Bravo, Sasson!

Gdy dostałam maila z wydawnictwa, gdzie oferowano mi do recenzji kolejną książkę opartą na faktach zdecydowanie musiałam się zgodzić. Z racji ukończonych studiów temat krajów arabskich i tego, co się w nich dzieje jest dla mnie ważny. Chociaż nie jest to region, z którego pisałam pracę magisterską czy też licencjacką to jednak coś nie coś wiem i coś nie coś się w głowie telepie z historii. Dlatego tym chętniej zasiadłam do historii Jasminy, która działa się podczas I wojny w Zatoce Perskiej.
Jasmina od urodzenia była dzieckiem szczęścia. Kochana przez ojca, który wcale nie żałował, że nie urodziła się chłopcem. Należy pamiętać, że każdy szanujący się muzułmanin pragnie najpierw być ojcem syna, niż córki. Na dodatek jest oszołamiająco piękna, nie musi zgodnie z tradycją wychodzić wcześnie za mąż, bo jej rodzice są zdania, że może najpierw popracować, a dopiero potem założyć rodzinę i przejąć rodzinny interes. W wieku dwudziestu trzech lat pracuje, jako stewardesa i podróżuje po świecie. Nie musi tak jak jej młodsza siostra w wieku dziewiętnastu lat być w zaawansowanej ciąży i zaspokajać potrzeb seksualnych swojego męża. Według matki obu dziewczyn to są właśnie obowiązki kobiety: dbać o zadowolenie mężczyzny zarówno w sypialni jak i poza nią. Same przyznacie, że dla nas kobiet, które wychowane zostały w zupełnie innej kulturze jest to nie do przyjęcia, żeby mąż mógł gwałcić żonę.
Wróćmy jednak do Jasminy, która, w 1990 r. po prostu znalazła się w złym miejscu dwa razy. Przede wszystkim nie powinno jej być w Kuwejcie tego dnia, gdy rozpoczęła się wojna. Kolejnym błędem było zgodzenie się na pewną działalność ruchu oporu. Tak właśnie kobieta trafiła do seksualnego więzienia, gdzie stała się niewolnicą tajemniczego Kapitana.
Przyznam szczerze, że krew we mnie wzbierała, kiedy czytałam jak mężczyzna wyjaśniał Jasminie, dlaczego ma prawo używać, kiedy chce jej ciała. Uważał, że ma prawo, bo jest żołnierzem i musi jakoś wyładowywać swoje hormony, a żona daleko. Na dodatek Kapitana wcale nie pociągała jego małżonka, bo była już zniszczona siedmioma porodami. Jasmina naiwnie myślała, że tak zachowują się tylko żołnierze, a przecież jej szwagier w dokładnie taki sam sposób traktował jej ciężarną siostrę. Musiała być gotowa do stosunku każdego wieczora, bo on tak chciał. Dla muzułmanów kobiety nic nie znaczą są tylko ludźmi niższego rzędu, którzy mają im usługiwać. To oni są w religii wystawiani na piedestał a nie kobiety. One mają siedzieć cicho i najlepiej nie orientować się w niczym. Warto to zaznaczyć, zwłaszcza w kontekście napływu emigrantów z Syrii. To, w jaki sposób oni wymagają od nas przyjęcia ich do swoich „domów” (użyjmy tego określenia na państwo, w którym żyjemy) byłoby nie do zaakceptowania w ich świecie. Oni chcą zasiłków, opieki lekarskiej, miejsc modłów, specjalnie wydzielonych dzielnic, gdzie mogliby kultywować swoje tradycje i zwyczaje. Nie wyobrażają sobie, że mogliby być dyskryminowani z powodu, że są muzułmanami. Jednak, gdy odwrócisz sytuację i to ty spróbujesz uciec do ich kraju i będziesz się domagać kościoła katolickiego to w najlżejszym przypadku czeka na ciebie więzienie. Żyjąc, mieszkając w ich kraju masz wyznawać ich wiarę, być gorliwym muzułmaninem. Podczas jednych z zajęć z zagrożeń prowadzący powiedział o muzułmanach: „To jest tak jak zaprosicie kogoś do domu, jest fajnie przez godzinę czy dwie. Jesteście mili i przyjemni oraz gościnni. Jednak, gdy ktoś zaczyna wam w nim rządzić to już zdecydowanie nie jest świetnie”. Zgadzam się z nim, bo w obecnej chwili właśnie tak to wygląda, że niedługo europejskie kobiety będą obawiały się wyjść na ulice by nie zostać ukarane za swoje europejskie stroje.
Nie chodzi mi głównie o gwałt, bo przecież nie każdy taki czyn został uczyniony przez muzułmanina i wśród chrześcijan zdarzają się tacy zwyrodnialcy, ani też o to, że wojna wywołuje w mężczyznach takie instynkty, bo to istnieje od wielu, wielu lat. Jednak należy pamiętać, że muzułmanie powinni gorliwie przestrzegać Koranu. Sama Jasmina mówi do swojego oprawcy, że Arab nigdy nie zgwałci nigdy Arabki. Co kolejny raz pokazuje, że jest naiwna, bo nie pamięta jak jej szwagier traktuje jej siostrę.
Jasmina nie była jedyną kobietą, którą spotkał taki los. Oprócz niej w budynku było około dziesięciu kobiet, które miały swoich oprawców. Każda z nich należała do innego mężczyzny. Każda z nich wolała umrzeć niż przyznać, swojemu katowi, że to sprawia jej przyjemność (oczywiście, że tak nie było, ale ci mężczyźni tak myśleli). Jednak tylko Jasmina zdecydowała się na podjęcie ryzykownej gry rodem z bajki „Z 1000 i jednej nocy”… Niczym Szeherezada musiała rozkochać w sobie swojego oprawcę…
Oprócz Jasminy w więzieniu seksualną niewolnicą była również szesnastoletnia Lana, która jest kuwejcką dziewczyną. Została „wybranką” najgroźniejszego i najbardziej brutalnego z żołnierzy irackich, który urzędował w tym więzieniu. To, co przeżywała Lana nie da się opisać słowami tak by dało się to czytać w recenzji. Miała jednak w sobie wiele siły by pozostać wierna muzułmańskim zwyczajom. Wiele razy zastanawiałam się, czym muszą być opętani tacy mężczyźni by tak traktować kobietę, co nimi kieruje? Chyba nigdy się tego nie dowiem i szczerze nie chcę tego wiedzieć. Książka opisuje I wojnę w Zatoce Perskiej od środka, od tematu, który dla wielu jest zbyt kontrowersyjny żeby gdziekolwiek go poruszyć. Nawet władze w Kuwejcie po odparciu irackiej okupacji nie wiedziały jak o tym mówić, a najlepiej było zamieść to pod dywan. Nie zapominajcie, że w krajach arabskich to kobieta zawsze jest winna gwałtowi. To nie ona jest ofiarą.
Bardzo żałuję, że w domu nikt nie będzie chciał tej książki przeczytać, bo jest warta uwagi i tego by zagłębić się w tej lekturze. Mam jednak jedno, małe zastrzeżenie. We wstępie, jak i w późniejszych aneksach na końcu książki odniosłam wrażenie, że autorka robi mini reklamę swojej innej powieści The Rape of Kuwait. Jasmina od urodzenia była dzieckiem szczęścia. Kochana przez ojca, który wcale nie żałował, że nie urodziła się chłopcem. Należy pamiętać, że każdy szanujący się muzułmanin pragnie najpierw być ojcem syna, niż córki. Na dodatek jest oszołamiająco piękna, nie musi zgodnie z tradycją wychodzić wcześnie za mąż, bo jej rodzice są zdania, że może najpierw popracować, a dopiero potem założyć rodzinę i przejąć rodzinny interes. W wieku dwudziestu trzech lat pracuje, jako stewardesa i podróżuje po świecie. Nie musi tak jak jej młodsza siostra w wieku dziewiętnastu lat być w zaawansowanej ciąży i zaspokajać potrzeb seksualnych swojego męża. Według matki obu dziewczyn to są właśnie obowiązki kobiety: dbać o zadowolenie mężczyzny zarówno w sypialni jak i poza nią. Same przyznacie, że dla nas kobiet, które wychowane zostały w zupełnie innej kulturze jest to nie do przyjęcia, żeby mąż mógł gwałcić żonę.
Wróćmy jednak do Jasminy, która, w 1990 r. po prostu znalazła się w złym miejscu dwa razy. Przede wszystkim nie powinno jej być w Kuwejcie tego dnia, gdy rozpoczęła się wojna. Kolejnym błędem było zgodzenie się na pewną działalność ruchu oporu. Tak właśnie kobieta trafiła do seksualnego więzienia, gdzie stała się niewolnicą tajemniczego Kapitana.
Przyznam szczerze, że krew we mnie wzbierała, kiedy czytałam jak mężczyzna wyjaśniał Jasminie, dlaczego ma prawo używać, kiedy chce jej ciała. Uważał, że ma prawo, bo jest żołnierzem i musi jakoś wyładowywać swoje hormony, a żona daleko. Na dodatek Kapitana wcale nie pociągała jego małżonka, bo była już zniszczona siedmioma porodami. Jasmina naiwnie myślała, że tak zachowują się tylko żołnierze, a przecież jej szwagier w dokładnie taki sam sposób traktował jej ciężarną siostrę. Musiała być gotowa do stosunku każdego wieczora, bo on tak chciał. Dla muzułmanów kobiety nic nie znaczą są tylko ludźmi niższego rzędu, którzy mają im usługiwać. To oni są w religii wystawiani na piedestał a nie kobiety. One mają siedzieć cicho i najlepiej nie orientować się w niczym. Warto to zaznaczyć, zwłaszcza w kontekście napływu emigrantów z Syrii. To, w jaki sposób oni wymagają od nas przyjęcia ich do swoich „domów” (użyjmy tego określenia na państwo, w którym żyjemy) byłoby nie do zaakceptowania w ich świecie. Oni chcą zasiłków, opieki lekarskiej, miejsc modłów, specjalnie wydzielonych dzielnic, gdzie mogliby kultywować swoje tradycje i zwyczaje. Nie wyobrażają sobie, że mogliby być dyskryminowani z powodu, że są muzułmanami. Jednak, gdy odwrócisz sytuację i to ty spróbujesz uciec do ich kraju i będziesz się domagać kościoła katolickiego to w najlżejszym przypadku czeka na ciebie więzienie. Żyjąc, mieszkając w ich kraju masz wyznawać ich wiarę, być gorliwym muzułmaninem. Podczas jednych z zajęć z zagrożeń prowadzący powiedział o muzułmanach: „To jest tak jak zaprosicie kogoś do domu, jest fajnie przez godzinę czy dwie. Jesteście mili i przyjemni oraz gościnni. Jednak, gdy ktoś zaczyna wam w nim rządzić to już zdecydowanie nie jest świetnie”. Zgadzam się z nim, bo w obecnej chwili właśnie tak to wygląda, że niedługo europejskie kobiety będą obawiały się wyjść na ulice by nie zostać ukarane za swoje europejskie stroje.
Nie chodzi mi głównie o gwałt, bo przecież nie każdy taki czyn został uczyniony przez muzułmanina i wśród chrześcijan zdarzają się tacy zwyrodnialcy, ani też o to, że wojna wywołuje w mężczyznach takie instynkty, bo to istnieje od wielu, wielu lat. Jednak należy pamiętać, że muzułmanie powinni gorliwie przestrzegać Koranu. Sama Jasmina mówi do swojego oprawcy, że Arab nigdy nie zgwałci nigdy Arabki. Co kolejny raz pokazuje, że jest naiwna, bo nie pamięta jak jej szwagier traktuje jej siostrę.
Jasmina nie była jedyną kobietą, którą spotkał taki los. Oprócz niej w budynku było około dziesięciu kobiet, które miały swoich oprawców. Każda z nich należała do innego mężczyzny. Każda z nich wolała umrzeć niż przyznać, swojemu katowi, że to sprawia jej przyjemność (oczywiście, że tak nie było, ale ci mężczyźni tak myśleli). Jednak tylko Jasmina zdecydowała się na podjęcie ryzykownej gry rodem z bajki „Z 1000 i jednej nocy”… Niczym Szeherezada musiała rozkochać w sobie swojego oprawcę…
Oprócz Jasminy w więzieniu seksualną niewolnicą była również szesnastoletnia Lana, która jest kuwejcką dziewczyną. Została „wybranką” najgroźniejszego i najbardziej brutalnego z żołnierzy irackich, który urzędował w tym więzieniu. To, co przeżywała Lana nie da się opisać słowami tak by dało się to czytać w recenzji. Miała jednak w sobie wiele siły by pozostać wierna muzułmańskim zwyczajom.
