A great compilation of literature linked to depression by two authors with extensive knowledge. In the book are detailed issues related to diagnostic systems, the phenomenology of depression, evolutionary perspectives, environmental, genetic, depression and neuroendocrine system, depression and immune system, cellular changes in depression, functional and structural changes in the depressed brain as well as neurotransmission and subcellular function. At the end of the book three clinical cases are detailed with an approach based on the topics discussed throughout the book. It is a great work of compilation and synthesis although at times it becomes a bit repetitive. Great work by Maletic and Raison. A must read for mental health professionals and researchers.

Very promising book, already learned lots from it. Since I probably won't be finishing it any time soon (the book is dense) I'll just leave this review here. I'll definitely come back to it though, specially when I start working as a psychologist.

One of the most insightful books on depression I've read. Major Depressive Disorder, as defined in the DSM, is extremely heterogeneous and has problems as a valid diagnostic construct. Dr. Raison and Dr. Maletic go through some of the causes and mechanisms of depression to give us a more biologically-based, objective understanding of the illness.
