When the Senator said he’d send an aide to draft a counter to the proposed pipeline that would bisect his ranch, the last thing Mark expected…was Lana.
The woman who arrives from Washington knows things he’s certain aren’t a matter of public record.
The pull to her is stronger than he’d like and for the first time in years he’s glimpsed a second chance at happiness.
Lana’s past is shadowy, something Mark suspects is to blame for her obsession with security and the fact she’s always looking over her shoulder. He wonders if it’s the reason she wants to leave D.C.
When a tragic accident results in a terrible misunderstanding, both of their lives are torn apart. Mark realizes the hard way that there are people who don’t want them together. Yet is it possible the biggest obstacle between him and happiness…is himself?
Despite not being a fan of cowboy novels, I decided to give “Something Lost” a try because I’ve read several other books of FitzGerald’s. This was a second chance, age gap, romance, that did not disappoint!
I was pleasantly surprised to be drawn in almost immediately. The way FitzGerald unravels the story of Mark and Lana kept me reading; searching for not only answers but what would happen next.
I loved the ranch setting in Wyoming, and the way she portrayed Marks loyalty as well as love for it. The opening scene with Lana’s appearance at the ranch is what hooked me! It was so well written, I could visualize her stepping out in her high heels! So many twist and turn’s along the way, just how I like it, to keep me engaged with reading a book.
I highly recommend “Something Lost” even for those who aren’t a fan of cowboy romance.
Stop sleeping on this book!!! It is a beautifully written romance. Lana has been in love with Mark for 20 years but he doesn’t even know she exists. Now she’s at his ranch to help stop a pipeline expansion, and hoping for a chance to get him out of her system. I smiled so many times reading this book. The family connections are moving. The banter between Lana and her best friend is perfect. Of course it wouldn’t be romance if there were not a million mistakes and misunderstandings. I cannot wait to read more by Erin FitzGerald!
You’ll love this book if you like: Age gaps Later in life love stories Second chances at love!
Tropes: single dad, age gap, childhood crush, second chance, later in life second chance at love, "mistaken" identity, miscommunication, secrets, surprise pregnancy, political machinations and suspense. Trigger warnings: st*lker, k*dnapping and mention of SA. Rating: 3.75✨
I liked this one, but the miscommunication trope has a HUGE role in this book, and for those who don’t know, I really struggle with it. At some point, I was so close to throw my iPad to the wall! For the love of god, just talk to each other!
Mark is really better than me because I hate secrets. I'm the type of person who needs to know, otherwise I'll imagine the worst case scenario ever and probably won't trust you.
It’s sad that Lana and Mark lost so much time because of their stubbornness. Talking to each other could have prevented most of their heartache (if not all of it), but I guess all's well that ends well.
Jackson stole my heart and needs to be shielded from all the evil in this world! Every interaction we saw from him was so pure that I got emotional almost every time. I really loved Julie's character as well.
Thank you to the author for sending me a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
There's a lot to like about this book with its cowboys and Montana vibes. I liked the storyline between Lana and Mark with their second chance at love. Some of the tropes include single parent, secrets, age gap, and second chance at love. There is a lot happening with Lana so I had to pay attention and double back just to make sure I wasn't confused. I loved a lot of the characters and can't wait for the next one.
Wow! This is such a good book. Lana has been in love with Mark her entire life, and he has no idea who she is… I loved the way their story was written and the order that details are revealed, it adds mystery to everything else going on. It was fast-paced, and not just a complicated love story. The pipeline plot, harassment in the work place, stalkers, tragedy, and more, all made this a multi-layered and addictive novel. I don’t want to give anything away, I highly recommend reading!
I received this as an arc and I just wanna say a massive thank you to Erin for sending this to me!
Safe to say it deserved the hype because Mark and Lana’s story 👀 if you love an age gape vibe story where the woman fell when she was younger and the guy finds a second chance. Then this book is for you.
Lana was for sure giving so many hints to Mark about who she was. I don’t understand how he didn’t know. Blinded by love I’m thinking. They were obsessed with each other from the get to and I didn’t want the story to end. Especially with that unexpected spanner thrown into the works (I nearly hated mark to that)
I also loved seeing the story of Travis come to light. He definitely deserves the world 🥺
I cannot wait to see how the series unfolds! I’m now obsessed with country/small town romances
So, I got to say, I was not expecting this book and it is not normally the kind of romance I read, but Erin was nice enough to send me a copy to see if I'd be interested in future books and oh...em...gee. I had to message her immediately after closing the book because I want more!
Let's start with Lana. She's a badass who's had bad luck (really, really bad luck) with her ex's. She's been hung up on Mark since she was 5 and one secret rendezvous had made him the only man she's kept coming back to in her mind and heart.
Now Mark. My heart breaks for Mark. He's equally had a rough go of it in the romance department, but out of the two of them, his is just heartbreaking. This grumpy cowboy is such an amazing man (even if his memory is shot and he can't seem to remember Lana at all--which, I mean, with the age gap it makes sense).
I wasn't expecting the suspense of this story. I was expecting a normal cowboy, second chance, age gap romance, but the suspense. It was done really well. I'm also really glad that the 2nd book is Ashley and Travis instead of Jacob and Emily (which I'm sure will be amazing) because getting to know Travis and Ashely in this book was so good. Ashley is an amazing best friend and just a saint...A SAINT!
i really tried SO hard to like this but i just couldn’t. i was confused most of the time, it was too long, & the lack of communication between mark & lana was insane. pining after a man for like 30 years is such loser behavior too i’m sorry
also i kind of hated the weird archaic view of men & women/their “roles.” you don’t need to be married & have a family to be fulfilled. and having 2 parents is great but like kids don’t need that; they can survive with 1 & they’ll be just fine
things didn’t really get interesting until about 70% in but by then it was kind of too late idk
i really do feel so so so bad that i didn’t enjoy this bc i really like erin but it just wasn’t good :(
Wow!! What a truly unexpected roller coaster of a love story! There were so many twists and turns, I couldn't guess what would happen next.
Mark, a rancher who raised his now adult sons solo, and Lana, the woman who has loved him from afar, are thrown together when a pipeline threatens their small town. It's been 20 years since they were last living there at the same time, but with their age gap Mark doesn't remember her at all! Cue all the chemistry and tension, mixed with a heaping of suspense when Lana's past comes back to haunt her.
If you like Catherine Cowles, you'll love this book ❤ I do recommend checking the tropes & trigger warnings ahead of reading as the book does cover some fairly heavy topics.
I’ve always been a sucker for a woman who knows what she wants, what she deserves. And Lana is your gal for that. This second chance romance hooked me from the beginning. There was a bit of a lull in the middle that slowed me down a bit, but the last third of the book was twisty-turny and a little unexpected. However, I really really wanted to wring some sense into the MMC, Mark. Like most men, he was an idiot.
✨I was given this ARC in return for an honest review✨
Wow! This book was a rollercoaster but I enjoyed it! With tropes including age gap, second chance, rivals to lovers & single dad - I was obsessed 😍
I absolutely Mark and Lana’s story, seeing their second chance at love was fantastic! I loved how when they met they immediately had a connection and were trying to figure out how they knew each other.
It felt so refreshing to read a book with older characters as I’m so used to reading books with younger main characters.
Mark’s sons, Jack and Jon, were just the sweetest. I loved getting to know them.
I don’t know if it was just me but i thought it was a bit all over the place, I had to keep skipping back to make sure I was keeping up with what was happening!
There was so much drama in this book, our dear Lana went through an awful lot! I found myself unable to put the book down!
If cowboy romance is your trope of choice, you’ll want to pick up Something Lost by Erin Fitzgerald! Set in Montana (and Washington!) Something Lost introduces readers to Lana and Mark- over 40 year old MCs looking for a second chance romance!
Lana has a very secretive past- she has spent time and money to alter her identify and distance herself from the bad decisions of her past; all except one: her decision to love Mark Branson since she was a child. 11 years her senior, Mark doesn’t remember the blonde girl from his teens. Jaded in love, can Lana convince Mark to fall in love again?
There is a LOT to unpack in this one- Lana’s story could have been 3 or 4 different characters worth of ‘stuff’- readers should be wary of trigger warnings including sexual assault, sexual abuse, stalking, verbal abuse and more. She also often seemed very young for her age in some of the decisions and thought processes she had. That being said, I enjoyed following her pursuit of Mark.
I couldn’t decide if Mark reminded me of Rip or of John Dutton (Yellowstone fans, where are you!?) He was in between both of their ages, I think. He owns the ranch (John vibes) has grown sons (John vibes) and is jaded in love (John vibes). I was on team Mark all along until the last 10% of the book (no spoilers!) when to me, he made an irredeemably stupid decision (following yet another irredeemably stupid decision on Lana’s part) and I kinda got mad at them both.
This book includes: - second chance romance - age gap romance - enemies to lovers (long time family grudge) - cowboy trope - childhood crush trope - protector vibes
And a lot more! I really REALLY liked Lana’s brother’s story and hope for a second book that features more of him!
This is Book 1 in the Wolf Mountain Ranger Series.
The story follows and is older and wiser(?) Lana returning home to help fight a pipeline proposal that threatens Marks livelihood, but also the entire area.
First of all, it is incredibly refreshing to read about characters that are older, so are more relatable (I'm closer to 40 than 21 now!)
I absolutely love Lana, she is embodies strength, and I loved getting to know her and see her grow as a character!
Mark... Now Mark was an interesting character. There were times I loved him, and other times, I was shrieking at my reader because he just wasn't thinking! By the end of the book, though, he had redeemed himself.
I absolutely love Erin's style of writing and how she also gives us a glimpse into the Cowboy World, which, as a Brit, is something I won't ever see!
The story is definitely more 'grown up' than other Cowboy Romances, but this was and is part of the appeal - older doesn't always mean wiser for some people 😆.
It's fun, gripping, and utterly all consuming - I literally read this entire book in a day.
If you love Cowboy Romances, then you definitely need to read this book just be prepared to go out and buy the rest of the series like I did 😆
“You had me the whole time, you just didn’t know it.”
Something Lost by Erin Fitzgerald is the first book in the wolf mountain ranchers collection and followers the story of Lana and Mark. It is a mid-life, cowboy, age gap, second chance romance.
Erin Fitzgerald, captivated me from the outset. Fitzgerald brought these characters to life and It was hard to decipher wether this was a true story or fiction. Lana and Mark were very relatable and their story was nothing short of a roller coaster, When I tell you this book kept surprising me that would be an understatement. At every turn there was a new secret to uncover. Every time I thought they were finally getting their happy ending the plot deviated and had me in utter shock and disbelief.
Something Lost is a 5 star read, There is something for everyone, plot, smut, romance.
Erin Fitzgerald’s next release, Something Gained, is due to be released January 2024 and I for one will be picking it up day one.
I think I just went on a Yellowstone themed rollercoaster. Age gap, second chance romance, big secrets, and single dad makes for a great love story! I loved the instant connection between Mark and Lana, and trying to figure out how Lana knew Mark. Mark’s boys and Julie were such sweet characters that just made me want things to work out even more. So many good things came out of their relationship! I gave four stars only because I feel like there was too many bug problems for Lana. Her family’s rivalry, the stalking, the oil line, kidnapping, and her trauma with her ex husband all just felt like a lot to catch up with. I felt like she was a lot younger than 42, but it was also refreshing to read something without a 18 year old FMC. I loved the authors writing style and her character development, and how her side characters brought so much more to the story. I’m looking forward to Travis and Ashley’s happily ever after!
I received this book from the author in return for an honest review 🖤
Read if you like: ⊱ Cowboy romance ⊱ Suspense ⊱ Second chances ⊱ Secrets ⊱ Age gap
What a wild ride this one was! So much stuff happened in that book, if you enjoy all the secrets and a bit of suspense in your cowboy romance, you'll be entertained for sure! The fact that our characters are on the "older" side made this story so much more interesting. They were definitely more mature and they had a lot of baggage too, which made you understand where they were coming from. I enjoyed that we got to really learn a lot about our characters throughout the read, what happened in their past and why they are the way they are now. Mark stole my heart so easily. With his little family and the way he was acting, I just loved him so much. And I really loved seeing his two boys and Julie, such amazing characters.
I'd say that my main problem with the book was our FMC. I couldn't for the life of me get myself to love her. Her actions and decisions were at times unacceptable to me, and it made it hard for me to root for her, especially since it continued in that direction until the end. Also, please remember that second chances are not my favourite for the main reason that I often get mad at the characters and well that's what happened here. I always look at all the lost years and it makes me sad honestly... it always feels like a simple talk would have solved it all but no they had to be stubborn and have their life broken... But like I said, that's a me problem!
Oh and totally unrelated to my appreciation of the book but damn was I lost with the names in that book, haha, my fish memory was really put to the test with how similar some names were (for me just a name starting with the same letter can be triggering honestly, so yeah, I was sometimes so confused, really need to work on that memory).
Overall still a nice read, great writing and lots of character to love in there. You get lots of things going on too, getting you through all of the emotions and the last part of the book was plot twist after plot twist, so it will keep you on the edge of your seat.
Thanks to the author for the eARC, all opinions are my own.
Romance, intrigue, missed opportunities and strong family bonds made this book hard to put down.
Lana has been in love with Mark since she was a teenager. When she returns twenty plus years later to work with him, the attraction is instant. Lana has a past that she doesn’t want Mark to know about. As they fall more in love, a series of misinterpretations about the circumstances forces them apart. When Lana’s past is finally revealed, Mark has to fight to get Lana back.
There is a lot going on in this book, not just a simple romance. These two carry a lot of baggage. I loved the main characters in this story. They are enhanced by Mark’s kids and housekeeper, as well as Lana’s brother, Travis and her best friend, Ashley. This was a fast paced read that kept me turning the pages. I can’t wait to read the next book about Travis and Ashley.
I would recommend this book for those that like second chances, single dads finding love and older characters.
Something Lost was not at all what I was expecting! The book instantly gave off some Yellowstone vibes for me but a little more of a romance side to it. One thing that drove me a little crazy throughout the book was the secrets that Lana was hiding from Mark. I understand why she was hiding them for most of the book, however, around 60% into the book I was so upset about the secrets and the miscommunication. Also, how stubborn both the characters were being towards each out which resulted in them both missing precious moments that can’t be relived. I was definitely not expecting the suspense that was occurring in the last few chapters though! I also liked that you got to see a little bit of a prologue essentially to the next book with Ashley & Travis’s story.
I need a tall, dark, and handsome cowboy stat after reading this steamy novel! Lana finally reconnects with her childhood crush Mark, but secrets and miscommunication attempt to keep them apart. The couple goes through a lot of up’s and down’s to ultimately get their happily ever after.
Tropes include: -second chance -childhood crush -single parent -surprise pregnancy/secret baby -age gap
Mark and Lana’s story covers a lot of time with multiple time jumps, which were not obvious at first so pay attention! I absolutely adored the characters and story!!

Maybe I’m just not the right audience for this book but I didn’t enjoy it at all and I wish I did. I was so excited for a cowboy, slow burn kind of romance but … I didn’t think it’d be that slow. This book is so long for no reason honestly. 35% into the book and I just didn’t know what was really going on, I didn’t care for the characters either. It all seemed weirdly paced, I didn’t have time to connect with anyone before things started moving along. Maybe I’ll revisit but it’s just not it for me.
"I had a wild one on my hands, and I desperately wanted the chance to tame her."
What an amazing read! I dove into this one because I was lucky enough to receive an ARC copy of the second one in the series. I am so happy that I did!
The plot was phenomenal and had me hooked from the beginning until the end. There were so many secrets, twists and turns, and interconnected social webs ... it was a wild ride.
"It's clearly not a good idea for us to be in close proximity." "It's dinner, Lana." His chuckle was deep and smooth. "I promise not to bend you over the table - at least not in polite company."
You get: • Secret admirer • Just once to get it out of my system • It's never been like this • Grumpy × sunshine • Cowboy small town romance • Single Dad • So much drama • Age Gap
I highly recommend this series! You should pick it up now before the second comes out.
"I love you." I sighed, ridiculously happy. "You're such a mess." "I love you too." There was such tenderness in his voice. "And I'm your mess. Do what you will with me, but be gentle."
This was a cute and suspenseful cowboy romance. I enjoyed the writing style and the romance in this story, but I thought that the book could have been condensed. I also had a hard time connecting with the male main character and the decisions he made. However, I am definitely interested in Travis and Ashley’s story.
Thank you to Erin for providing this book in exchange for an honest review.
THIS BOOK!!!! OMG it had me sweating 🥵🌶️, smiling ☺️, crying 😭, and anxious 😬, I literally felt every emotion reading this book and genuinely recommend it if you enjoy and suspenseful, spicy romance with age gap, a touch of darkness unrequited love, pregnancy and more. It will not disappoint, Erin you did your thing with this one!
I hate to DNF books but this was just painful to read and I really do want to finish it but I feel like it might put me in a reading slump and I don’t want that to happen. I might read a few chapters daily untill I finish it but idk.
Ok,don’t judge me when I say that this has been my first cowboy romance book and boy did I love it ♥️ This is the first book in the Wolf Mountain Ranchers series, and it follows the story between Lana and Mark and their journey back to each other. You have single parent, age gap,grumpy/sunshine,small town romance. So yeah all the good stuff. I really enjoyed Erin’s writing and the way Lana and Mark’s story has developed throughout the book.I’m already reading book 2 in the series and I’m addicted.
I really enjoyed the story of Mark and Lana. It was refreshing to read a romance that featured older characters who have been through a lifetime of experiences and have to work through their traumas to come together. There were several twists and turns that kept me drawn in to the story. And whew, I was not expecting the spice level in this book 🥵! I loved the side story of Ashley & Travis, and I’m so excited to read their story in book 2!
⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ 🌶️ 🌶️ 🌶️

ARC Book Review Something Lost A Novel Written By Erin FitzGerald Fiction - Romance Published September 2023 443 Pages ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
This is a very complex story. It is much more than a romance between two people. There is suspense, a family feud, and revenge. There are many characters to keep track of.
The romance between Rancher Mark Branson and Lana Webb involves an age gap between two older adults, a second chance, mistaken identity, a single dad, secrets, and enemies to lovers. As their story develops, miscommunication and misunderstandings play an important part. The miscommunication trope is not one of my favorite tropes. At times I wanted to tell Mark and Lana to just open up and talk to each other!
Lana is the chief of staff for a US Senator from Montana. She comes to Mark’s ranch to help him fight a pipeline that is proposed that would bisect his land. Their attraction is immediate, but both have secrets they are keeping to themselves. I found myself wanting the two of them to have a happily ever after. Each time they are close, something pulls them apart.
“Loving someone is easy at first, because you see only the best. Real love has history. It’s practiced and chosen. It sees the ugly things and stays anyway.”
I really liked this one. It contains age gap and cowboys, two of my fav tropes right now so it was right in my alley. Very good writing, a lot of things happening got me hooked and i can only recommend it to my friends.
I have no idea why this book is not that 'popular' because i think it should be!
The author asked me to read & review this book, but my review will be honest.
I love a good cowboy romance and this was more than that. FMC has longed for the MMC since she was a child, & as an adult she doesn't feel like she deserves him. MMC has abandonment issues and fears that the FMC will leave him, so much so, that he literally abandoned himself, and her.
That's the gist, but the twists and turns within this book were a quite a ride.
This book has a few tropes Age Gap Second Chance Enemies to Lovers Childhood Crush Single Parent Overprotective MMC Secret Baby
Lana has a secret, a few actually, that she thinks will devastate him and tear them apart. But little does she know . . His love for her knows no bounds.
Mark has loved her since that fateful night but didn't know it!! He thought the woman from that fateful night was someone else and misplaced his heart for far too long.
Will they overcome their past enough to heal each others wounded hearts so that they can travel this world together, as they should be? Most definitely
Lana has 2 abusive ex husbands who end up working together to seek revenge on her, & Mark. The two MCs get blackmailed and are stalked throughout the majority of the story. This underlying drama really kept me holding on for dear life. Like WHAT? WHO? HOW? When these are answered, I smacked myself like 'Shoot, I should have known".
Lana ends up with Marks child, but Mark thinks it's someone elses and literally leaves Lana in the hospital, and for YEARS they live on neighboring properties and neither of them speaks to each other. Lana raises their baby, and Mark is oblivious. This part of the book infuriated me. Like how can you love someone, have their child, and just let them exist without trying? That personality trait of Lana's made me so mad. She knew Mark didn't know the full story, and instead of TELLING him, so he could be apart of the childs life, she was selfish. I feel, as a Mother, she should have done more.
This book probably could have been a whole series, Lana & Mark really go through some stuff together. I mean, there's a lot going on, but it gets tied up "neatly" at the end and we all end up with our HEA.
Erin's writing style is different than I'm used too. The time jumps were not as obvious at first, I'm used to like a mid-chapter break for these types of things and it was often overlooked. So sometimes I had to go back and figure out if I missed something, so that made me take a bit longer to read the book than necessary. There are a lot of J names and I got kind of confused sometimes. Jonathan or Jon (marks son) Jackson or Jack (marks son) Jamison Jennings Jack - a friend who was in the military Jacob Julie Jamie
Anyways excellent story. Definitely worth the read. Cant wait for Travis & Emily, I just hope it's a little less traumatic.

4 stars for this one! First of all thank you Erin for allowing me to read your book, I appreciate your trust and opportunity and can’t wait to read the other 4 in this series !
* All my reviews are honest and based on my personal opinions and thoughts alone. *
When I picked up this book and read the synopsis I had no idea what to expect. I knew there would be a sexy cowboy and let me tell you there definitely was! But aside from that , all the details and the story behind Mark and Lana and their families/ past was something I did not expect at all and the outcome of it was great.
I will say with all the details of their past, the first half of the book was slower , it is not a bad thing , there is just a lot to uncover to get to the “good stuff” that really drew me in. All these details are so worth it and puts the story all together in the end.
This book is not your traditional “love story” it has lots of heartbreak, trauma and a hurtful past .. in the end the beauty of love and family is beautiful and the true meaning behind love for these characters. I didn’t realize till further along that Lana & Mark were much older then I assumed, I like that they are older .. I haven’t seen much romance with older couples.
I love the characters in this book, well maybe expect the bad guys ! No one loves those guys haha. The families and friendships were A+ (Lana, mark, and the kiddos , Julie, Ashley and Travis) One of my favourite characters was Julie , I just loved her “motherly” personality and how she was the one who took care of the family. She also didn’t hide her truth and opinions about things to anyone, but also was the type to let people figure things out on their own.
Lana - scared to risk it all because of her past with abuse and insecurities , and hard to trust others. Strong.
Mark- abandonment issues, insecure as well, scared to be to alone, feeling of not being good enough, a strong bold man on the outside, a weak and gentle heart on the inside.
They both needed eachother. If only Lana wasn’t so scared to face her fears and let out her truths , it would have only prevented all the other outcomes they had to face and stubborn Mark who was just so stubborn and a past of heartbreak who waited too damn long ! If I were the family I would’ve opened my month 20 months earlier LOL.
Overall, I would recommend this book. I think it is a great read with multiple aspects and unexpected events.
The only thing I would have liked more is to have a longer ending and what happens after!
Plot: 4/5 Story: 4/5 Characters: 5/5 Spice: 2/5 - closed door sorta. (No explicit words when describing the intimate scenes)
Topics & Triggers: - Ranch / Western - Age gap - Death/ Loss - Abandonment - Abuse - Tragedy - Sex - Abortion - Pregnancy - Mentions of BDSM - Heartbreak - Love from the past - Alcohol - And more
