I paired Giraffe with There’s a Giraffe in my Soup. The small non-fiction text about giraffes explains what they eat, where they live, and how tall they are. There’s a Giraffe in my Soup is a funny book about a boy who goes out to eat and keeps finding wild zoo animals in his soup. Both of these books discuss giraffes and other animals. Some of the text features in the nonfiction selection are a table of contents, maps of Africa, and a short glossary at the end. A way that I would incorporate both of these texts would be to first point out the other animals in There’s a Giraffe in my Soup. (Alligator, elephant, yak, lion.) Then I would have students look through the facts they learned in the nonfiction book and have them compare and contrast them to the animals in the fiction book. They would do this compare and contrast by having giraffe on one side, then an animal of their choice in the other column and complete a Venn Diagram.

Picked up this book before we went on a trip to the zoo that way my son could learn a little about giraffe's before actually seeing one in person for the first time. Great pictures and straight forward information in simple sentences.
Part of the Giant Animals series Giraffes introduces transitional readers to giraffes. The sentences are short with a few new vocabulary words such as mammal and cartilage. Includes a small map of Africa, a true/false quiz at the end and compares the giraffe’s height to a human man’s. The photos are beautiful but two do not seem to fit in- one is blurry as giraffes are running and the other looks Photoshopped. Other books in the series include elephant, manatee, panda, sea turtle and whale shark.
This small book is a great intro to giraffes and would be an excellent source for teaching research. Its pictures are clear and attractive; there is a glossary, contents page, and quick quiz at the end of the book.
