Barren Planet #2

Reckless Rebellion

Rate this book
It seems too good to be true.

Marlee and Tyris have escaped Zerris and are headed for the central planets, where there will be no need to grow their own food, or struggle to survive. Where their relationship is safe, even if they can't have a baby. Their future looks rosy.

Until Marlee discovers she's pregnant.

Tyris is sure the illegal pregnancy will be overlooked when he tells the government he's found a hidden store of rare fuel. He didn't counted on his ex-wife wanting him back. Or on her having the power to threaten his unborn child.

To keep their baby safe, Tyris and Marlee must pretend that they mean nothing to each other, while trying to unravel the conspiracy that threatens not only their unborn child, but everyone from Zerris.

Rinelle Grey is no stranger to alternate lifestyles. She grew up in a variety of different homes, including a riverside shack with no electricity or running water, and even a tent. She and her sister spent their childhood chasing goats, climbing trees, eating peas and corn out of their mother’s vegetable garden, and occasionally rushing to get their correspondence school work in on time. Despite the difficulties of this lifestyle, she wouldn’t swap it for all the luxuries in the world (though she is rather fond of her running hot water and indoor plumbing now!)

She met her husband in ‘Family Therapy’, an elective they were both taking as part of their psychology degrees. It took several years for them to get together, in fact, their roleplaying characters got together before they did!

They married on the beach at sunrise in 2002, two months after Rinelle popped the question.

Although she had always loved to write, it wasn’t until her daughter was about eighteen months old that Rinelle started writing seriously. Probably not the best stage in terms of having spare time! And time only became scarcer when her daughter gave up her day sleep six months later. But by then, Rinelle had well and truly caught the writing bug, finding time somehow to continue with her passion. Her fast typing speed learnt from spending way too much time chatting on IRC, and the investment in an iPad when they came out, helped immensely.

Rinelle now lives on acreage with her husband and homeschooled daughter. In her spare time, she sells stock photography through an online site to support her family, and is hoping that writing will be able to add to that.

She loves to receive e-mails at rinelle@rinellegrey.com, or follow her on facebook or twitter.

Continuing on immediately from the ending of Reckless Rescue, Tyris and Marlee were very close to Tyris’ home planet, Urslat, at last. But the General wasn’t expecting Tyris, as he had been gone for over nine months – he had been thought to have perished, with his family even holding a memorial for him. So when the spaceship was within radio distance, and Tyris contacted the Space Station, everyone was shocked to say the least.

Docking and being escorted by soldiers was a shock, but Tyris was assured it was routine. As they both headed into different medical rooms for their examinations, Marlee was slightly terrified. Her home planet of Zerris was nothing like Urslat; she was feeling overwhelmed by it all. And a little worried as she also wondered if she were pregnant – a possibility which should have been impossible!

The shocks kept coming for Marlee – she found herself sitting in the waiting room waiting for Tyris beside Milandra, who turned out to be Tyris’ wife – something Tyris had not bothered to tell her. The secret of their love for each other would have to remain just that – a secret. Could they keep that secret though?

With Urslat having rules which were strict in the extreme, with all sorts of recriminations if one disobeyed those rules, Tyris and Marlee knew they had no choice but to wait and bide their time. But suddenly danger was just around the corner – Marlee had to make a choice, and fast. What would happen to Marlee and Tyris? Would they even have a future, or was it the worst thing they had ever done, to leave Zerris for Urslat?

I thoroughly enjoyed this, the second in the Barren Planet series. The new characters which were introduced are well crafted and easy to know. Getting to know Tyris’ family was great, especially his younger brother Kerit, and it’s exciting to learn the third in the series will be Kerit’s story. I have no hesitation in recommending Aussie author Rinelle Grey and her Barren Planet series to all readers of fantasy and science fiction.

This review is based on an ARC of Reckless Rebellion sent to me by the author. It is the second book in the series and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The story follows on from the first book where refugees from a stranded planet return to the main Colonial planet and their future plans are greatly changed. The book is a very readable sci-fi romance which would appeal to many readers across both genres, there is a strong passion for survival from the characters which leaves a warm after glow when you reach the end of the book. I believe Rinelle is working on the third book which will be available next year and shall look forward to catching up with the characters in the next part of their adventures.

Just not my thing .....

Deep sigh.... This just wasn't my thing, but I'm not discuss any plot points or characters or anything that got on my last nerve or bothered me, Why? Because at the end of the day, whether I really liked this book or not I can tell a lot of hard work went into its plot and setting and worked building and whiles have plenty of opinions ( I always do! ;) ), don't feel strongly enough to try to sway you to try or not try.... It's a well written and thought out series though and the 1st book is free sooooo give it a try and see its its your thing even it it wasn't mine ;) enjoy and best of luck to the writer ;)

I enjoyed this sequel Reckless Rebellion more than the first book of the series Reckless Rescue. While it was let down slightly by a few spelling and grammatical errors, it was easy to overlook these and I became hooked in the story. I had to keep reading until I knew the outcome.
I am looking forward to the release of the third book of the series now.

Please note that I am reviewing from a perspective that has not read the prequel to this novel. I was asked to give my review based on this perspective, and I also received this novel free of charge for my honest critique.

As someone who did not read RECKLESS RESCUE, I was immediately pulled into the story of RECKLESS REBELLION and I connected to the characters, even though I did not know of them or their previous adventures. I think that this is in part attributed to the fact that the romance between the two protagonists was already established, and so I cared about that when Rinelle shortly after pulled Tyris's wife Milandra into the mix.

If you haven't read the first book in her barren planet romance series, you do not feel as though you're missing a large gap of information. Obviously, there are conflicts and child-bearing/fertility problems the characters face before you enter the novel, but those are easily picked up and explained in a way that doesn't confuse you or overload you with information from the start. The mix is interesting; Rinelle informs the reader of the problems the characters face without pumping too much information in the beginning.

The only part I was confused on for the first fifty or so pages was determining what exactly anysogen was. The characters reference it several times, and I originally thought it was some sort of chemical that was a factor in infertility. I was wrong of course. Anysogen is just spaceship fuel and a valuable resource at that. (This was reaffirmed when I went back and read some blurbs on the first and second novels). Also, the definition of anysogen is not a spoiler; but it is a key factor in understanding what's happening. The only other thing that gets confusing if you're going into RECKLESS REBELLION headlong first is that when the people of Marlee's home planet are brought back, you don't really know THOSE characters, stepfamily included, but it is not a detracting factor in the story either.

Rinelle's writing is very clean and refreshing. When you first pick it up, you blink and realize you've been sitting there for five hours and just devoured over a hundred pages. It gets you hooked and invested right from the start. The romance is innocent and new, even though Marlee and Tyris are not new to love, and those past relationships help develop how they handle their feelings for each other as well. I loved Marlee. And I also loved Kerit, and this is his debut too

But back to the writing. It has a simple style that makes for an enjoyable read, but you do walk away reflecting on topics that are serious, and though they are not typical problems that are present in our society (though, some cultures do have similar ones), they do beg the reader to wonder. If not in a 'could this happen' sense but in a 'where do we draw the line' sense. Rinelle presents problems that are very real to her characters, and they become very real to the reader.

The science-fiction portions are not confusing. I was heavily interested in her huge elevator that transported people from the spaceship port to the planet. Also, while I sense that RECKLESS RESCUE heavily portrays "primitive, frontier" society, Rinelle flips the coin and shows you an entirely different yet functioning society. I am very interested in reading the first installment to see how she presented Marlee's life on her home planet.

All in all, this is certainly worth the read.

I started this book with a bit of resentment because I didn't know that the prequel was going to leave us hanging and if we want to know what happens, we have no choice but to buy book 2. The first book had been so intriguing that I really wanted to know how it ended, so despite my grumbling, I bought the second book. I know, it's unfair to complain when I got the first book for free, but it's the principle of the thing.

At any rate, I soon understood why the book had been split in two. If she had not, it would have been intimidatingly long. We start right where book 1 left off, with Tyris's planet coming in view. Ursalt is nothing like Marlee's little planet of Zerris, though. It is run by rigid rules, and the punishment for breaking them is severe. the culture shock begins immediately, when they are met by soldiers with guns as they step off the spaceship. To make matters worse, both have to go through medical checks and Tyris's wife is waiting in the medical office for him.

Trouble piles on trouble. Both Tyris and Marlee have to hide plenty of secrets. Life gets worse when the colonists from Marlee's planet arrive. It seems Urslat's rules apply to everyone, newcomer and citizens alike.

Troubles came thick and fast, so fast that I forgot to bookmark, something I normally do automatically for favorite sections. I read the book in less than 2 days, it had me so captivated. I want to say so much more but I'll content myself by saying I highly recommend this book!

Love, intrigue, scandal, action. This novel has it all!

I was drawn right back into this wonderful universe right from the first page. It was like I’d never left. Grey continues to develop the world that she has created using the same seamless writing and vivid descriptive style that we came to know in Reckless Rescue. Through her brilliant storytelling and creative imagination Grey takes you on a journey that you won’t soon forget. It’s faster paced than its predecessor and has much more action, of many varieties, but you won’t be able to put it down.

The characters from the first novel return with a vengeance (sometimes literally). They are all the same brilliant individuals that we came to know and love who continue to develop as individuals. The new characters that Grey introduces are very well developed and fit into the story nicely. The cast grows as the story does, yet never out of proportion. And although the cast is rather large, no one gets pushed to the wayside.

Overall, this was a brilliant novel that I couldn’t put down. It is a must read for any who want an out of this world adventure.

Please note that I received this novel free of charge from the author in exchange for an honest review.

There was enough action, betrayal, and scandal to keep me interested. The first book was suspenseful and full of complications for our couple but when Tyris and Marlee land on his home planet of Urslat with all the corruption going on in the government they had to wonder if the worst thing they could have ever done was to leave Zerris for Urslat? Marlee is so out of her element, and having Tyris's wife meet them comes as a real shock. And since she has no place else to stay but with the them,I felt for her. Well surprise follows surprise on Urslat and their are plenty of them.

I received this novel free of charge for my honest critique.

I have not read the prequel to this novel. Despite not reading it the story line of this novel was easy to pick up. It could stand alone without having read the prior novel. Having said that the character of Marlee lacked depth. I needed to see more development of her as a character within this book.

This books reads more like a romance novel than a science fiction. The key element of the story is the romance and problems of that romance on the two central characters. The science element is really this century technology with space ships and other planets thrown in. The moral and ethical ideas discussed add more depth to the struggles of the characters.

It is a simple read, but you do reflect on concepts that are of a more serious nature such as government control, self - determination and ethics in politics.

Reckless Rebellion is the sequel to Reckless Rescue. I was looking forward to reading it, and I wasn't disappointed. I wondered where the conflict would come from in this second book, as the lead characters were already in a relationship, but Rinelle Grey delivered right from the get-go, with Marlee's illegal pregnancy. Some great new characters, especially Tyris's brother (excited to learn he's to have his own book!) and a lovely romantic (if slightly quick) ending. Bring on book three!

self-less

We see the characters struggling to right some wrongs that eventually caught up to them. Ty wants to have a family with Marlee however with being on urslat things have become complicated. We have to many plots going at once and we see how our characters battle them out to try to keep them and their families on top. It is a race for survival how will them keep themselves a float.

2nd Book Awesome

Marlee and Tyris realize going back to his planet wasn't what they expected. The grass is not always greener on the other side as these people found out. The colony rules were almost as bad as having to change partners every 18 months.

So many conflicts in this story. Unsanctioned pregnancy, jealous ex, leaders with in fair rules and expectations, underground freedom fighters, etc.. Loved the action and drama.

Book 1 and book 2 in this series should have just been one long book, imho. Fortunately book 2 made up for the lack of a conclusion in book 1.
