A devotional resource for the forgotten post- Easter season. American Christians have forgotten the Easter season. We celebrate the Resurrection of Jesus on one day and then return to ordinary time. But Christ appeared over and over again for forty days in resurrected form. We cannot sustain this resurrection season because that kind of sustained joy overwhelms us. This book is designed to help us sustain Easter.
So, so awesome! I went through this devotional with a group of older women at my church with the intention of truly celebrating the great 50 days after Easter Sunday and before Pentecost. I’m a sucker for a multi-generational discussion:). I’ll share two of the most impactful quotes:
Talking about fishing for people: “We do not follow Jesus to be happy. We follow Jesus because there is so much more to life than being comfortable. We follow Jesus because we get to taste eternity in Him and there is joy there, much better than happiness, there is joy”.
Talking about 1 Corinthians 15:7 (James, Jesus’ brother): “Our family members are often the people we hurt the most. We make up our minds about who they are far before God is done with them”.
Normally, I begin a daily devotional for a season like Advent or Lent and then struggle to maintain a pattern of regular reading. This book of daily meditations for the season of Easter was different! Kate Moorehead writes so well, incorporating human stories with the story of Easter, that I found myself eagerly looking forward to each day's reading.
I would recommend "Resurrecting Easter" to anyone committed to celebrating Easter as a season, and not only a day. I would recommend this book to anyone wishing to explore resurrection more deeply as a reality here and now, and not only as a hope for some time after our deaths. From the last of her fifty offerings: "Heaven touched earth on the day of the Pentecost, inviting us to live a resurrection life here and now. Don't wait for death. You can enter heaven even now. It can come to you right here. The light is all around you, just open your eyes." (p. 152)
Periodically, I've posted something from a daily reading on my Facebook page. Typically, I receive almost immediate feedback from those grateful for those words on that day. For me, this book has been well worth the time taken to read it, and I'm grateful for Kate Moorehead's work!
