Trevor is an alien from Alpha Centauri. He's also part of an elite squad of Super Ninja Alien Robot Monsters-the strongest, meanest and, possibly, dumbest aliens in the Galaxy. Trevor's mission: Destroy Earth. The problem is ... he doesn't really want to. He can't tell anyone this, of course, or he'd be banished to the Porter-L System to face the underpants eating flying beasts of Warghoul. So, together with a misfit band of aliens, Trevor undertakes the long journey to Earth, all the while trying to figure out how he can possibly make this mission fail. ... this is his hilarious illustrated diary of the events that took place.
For a long time I dabbled in cartooning, illustration and film. This included: writing and illustrating cards for a major greeting card company, awards for my comedy short film "The Brink", and a couple feature-writing assignments for producers in Hollywood (boy, that was hard - and not all that fruitful!).
My focus switched to writing books for children when I started reading to my boys at bedtime. It's a great way to connect, even if the rest of the day has been too busy. I wanted to write a book that boys would love, and their parents might also enjoy reading.
I like humor - a lot. I also see great value in the tradition of storytelling to demonstrate concepts that may help children traverse some of life's difficulties (such as being called 'Farty bum breath').
Super Ninja Alien Robot Monsters is a book for middle readers (7-11 years). Besides working on the second Super Ninja book, I'm currently writing a book for advanced readers called, Clown Town. It's a book for boys AND girls ... and maybe even parents too!
I have to give this a five star right off the bat because I had such fun reading it and laughed so hard. It helps if you read Super Ninja Alien Robot Monsters first, but you don't really need to in order to fully enjoy this goofy and fun book.
The book is aimed at young boys, but as a middle-aged woman I loved every bit of it. It has practically no dialogue and is written in diary form, but it's just great. Trevor, the brutish alien writing the diary, is on a mission with other SNARMs to destroy the Earth. But this vicious, ugly alien has a softer side. He has friends on Earth and is torn between becoming a great SMARM invader and losing the only true family he has.
This book is not only hilariously witty, it is almost poignant in places, tender in others, and rude and funny throughout. Trevor is the perfect protagonist--just by reading his snippets we get a feel for who he is, his dreams, his fears. Bilman manages to capture a multifaceted character, but that's not what will attract the kids. They'll just love the goofiness, the awesome pictures, and the good dollop of little boy fart humor thrown in.:
My Favorite Trevorisms:
"I've never met a carrot that made any trouble."
"It's sooo cold that I can't sleep. That's what happens when you forget to pack your furry underwear."
"I'm not looking forward to the day I get so old that I need a start-up mode installed. Adult humans have a start-up mode, it's called coffee. Children have one too, it's called sugar."
"The solution to getting out of a pickle depends largely on whether the pickle you're in is a vegetable type pickle, or a conundrum type pickle."
"It's always nice to be fresh and relaxed when you're about to obliterate somebody's planet."
