Read: 7/27/20
Devon's story was sad. With an abused, dead husband she thinks she might have killed, she hides from everyone. Liam's the great guy who tries to bring her back to life. While I understood her pain I just wanted to rip her damn veil off. Liam tried everything to get her to trust him. I got so annoyed and frustrated with her.
The mysterious murder plot was diverting enough to keep the book interesting. Bryce, the main villian, was just as evil as his dead brother. The whodunit kept me questioning.
This was just an okay read. Not as good as the first book. This could be a standalone but I recommend reading in order.

I won a copy of "Phantom Bride" by Connie C. Scharon, though the Goodreads Giveaway Contest. This is a fast-paced historical romance novel, with a great set of characters and a intriguing plot.I have to say I don't normally read too many Historical Fiction novels, as most of the times I lose interest in the novel...but with this novel I was pleasantly surprised. This great story is set in Scotland in the thirteen hundreds.
Liard Malcolm Dunsmore needs the help of Liam Maclean, to find a man who will fight for the right to marry his daughter,Lady Devon Dunsmore Forbes, before her dead husbands' brother, Bryce Forbes, wins his right to marry her, and in doing so, inherit the title and all Malcolm's holdings. So Liam, being indebted to Malcolm for saving his life years earlier and devastated over the suicide of his own true love, Liam agrees.
But what exactly has Liam got himself into? Devon's psychological problems, makes Liam suspect that his new bride had something to do with her husband's death. Did she set the fire in the castle? Liam is left to sort out this madness.
I highly recommend this book.

What a wonderful story. Love the way Connie C Scharon writes! Such great characters and plot. I hope there is another book soon as I am on the last one now!

I received an advance copy of Phantom Bride through Goodreads.
I have to say I don't ordinarily like Historical Fiction and have never been able to get into the sub genre of Highlander. I've tried a few times but was never able to finish the books.
Phantom Bride is the second in the series about the McLeans. You don't have to read Enchanted Lover (book one) to understand what is happening in Phantom Bride... however, I think it makes understanding some of the peripheral characters in Phantom Bride a little easier.
Liam McLean agrees to marry the daughter of a Laird to "save her" (I won't go into detail and give away anything... I don't want to inadvertently ruin it for anyone). Devon (the girl who needs to be "saved") has some serious baggage that she consistently has trouble with throughout the story. However, Liam is extremely patient with her as he has his own baggage (which is briefly discussed in Enchanted Lover).
The "problems" in the story are poisoning, murder, attempted murder, jealousy and deception and Liam is left to sort out the madness he married into.
Devon was the character I liked least... that is not to say I didn't enjoy the book. Devon has some serious psychological issues and on one hand a person could understand her skittishness. But on the other hand she kind of drove me nuts. I ended up having more sympathy for Liam which only grew after the Duchess showed up.
There are some serious lovemaking scenes in both Enchanted Lover and Phantom Bride although it never felt raunchy or over the top.
Overall I enjoyed the quick read and (begrudgingly) the Highlander angle. (Smile) I felt the book flowed along easily (for me) and it was a break from my normal vampire and/or mystery type books. I only noticed a couple of errors in sentences but they were minor and I had no problem understanding what the intended sentence meant.
Additional Note - There is supposed to be a third book which I am definitely going to read.

Phantom Bride is a quick read, you are captured by the story from page one to the final page, and it is hard to put it down. We first met the hero, Liam in Enchanted Lover where his charm jumped off the page. I am so glad he got his own story, because he is a hero I would gladly welcome into my world, the same opinion held by the women in Phantom Bride. I like books where both the hero and heroine have issues, because after all don't we all. Liam is patient and kind as he deals with Devon, the heroine's issue. I highly recommend this book.

It is unlike anything else I've ever read, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. I must say Liam was my favorite character by far. Ultimately I would recommend this book to anyone.

Good writing and an intriguing storyline, mixing Romance and a bit of a who-dunnit. Only quibble, the baddies are overdrawn
