If life were fair and our culture were as interested in the welfare of children as it pretends to be, LouAnne Johnson, most famous for Dangerous Minds, the book that served as the basis for the movie of the same name, would instead be famous for this book. Why? Simply because it is the best book ever for new teachers assigned to tough or alternative schools. Bar none. Better than Teach Like a Champion: 49 Techniques that Put Students on the Path to College (a definite five-star how-to book that I love), better than the excellent Successful Classroom Management: Real-World, Time-Tested Techniques for the Most Important Skill Set Every Teacher Needs, and the much-vaunted Fred Jones’ Tools for Teaching: Discipline•Instruction•Motivation (nothing in Jones’ book that you can’t get better from someone else in another book). And unless you’re the rare first-year high-school teacher headed to an affluent suburban school, you’re better off reading this than even The First Days Of School: How To Be An Effective Teacher by Rosemary and Harry K. Wong.

You’ll find yourself re-reading this gem time and again to remind yourself why you went into teaching and to remind yourself that, yes, you really can do this and you really can dramatically change lives. Even if you teach at an affluent school in exurbia or suburbia, reading this account of how to excel in a life in the trenches will give you great ideas on respecting your students and knowing that, no matter where you teach, students bring lots of baggage from home.

Finally! TPT, OPL is a teacher's handbook that is densely practical and immensely readable.
