4.5. ⭐
I love when the cover of a book with a "character" on it matches how the character looks and feels like in the story. Author Fox really got it right with model Brady Ervin. Please don't ever update it! 😘 I could picture this man doing everything Harrison did!
Lets talk about the story. Harrison is a nice guy with a construction business and a lot of guilt over his Mom's Alzheimer's. His younger brother Matt sometimes comes back to help, but its mostly on Harrison's shoulders. He has a lot of responsibilities, and can't possibly see himself giving any time to a real relationship. Enter Harlow, a single Mom with two adorable boys and two ex husbands. She's the nurse that Harrison can't stop flirting with at the hospital job site. These two "meet" in the funniest way, when Harrison lands in the ER. Harrison doesn't remember a thing, until his right hand man Gus explains.
"As if she’s read my mind, the nurse from all of my fantasies comes into view, along with another woman about her age, dressed in scrubs. “It’s the cat,” the smaller one exclaims with her hands pressed to her chest. “Look, he’s holding him.” She beams at me.
I barely have time to wrap my head around what’s going on before the shuttle bus drives up, blocking any further view of the three of them. Turning to Gus, I give him a dumbfounded look.
“I may or may not have told them you fell trying to save the p@ssy.” My eyes fly wide.
"You’re welcome.”"
What I really liked a lot about the story, is that while Harlow had two deadbeat ex-husbands, they both weren't portrayed as "evil" or "horrible." Harlow definitely has good reason to not thing the world of either of them, yet she keeps a cordial relationship. These men are the fathers, and they DO help her by taking the boys when needed. Are they great fathers? No. But if she was to bad mouth them or push them away she knows her boys would blame her and she would regret it. Its not about her, its about the boys. I think it was Judge Judy who said:
"You have to love your kids more than you hate your ex husband."
Did I have experience with this? Yup! And I took Judge Judy's advice. Best advice ever. And clearly Author Fox decided to make these fathers into nuanced characters, instead of cardboard cutouts, Rob especially.
"“@#$%, Har. You’ve been getting it done alone for so long, and I’ve just stood by and let it happen. I’m sorry.” I watch, dumbfounded, as Rob stands up tall. “I’m going to do better. By you and the kids.”
It was heartbreaking reading about Harrison's Mom, but the scenes with Joyce were some of my favorite. I can't imagine the kind of person you need to be to work with disabled people like that. You have to be strong, kind, patient, loving, empathic, and so much more. What an amazing character! Its like she bridged the story.
I'm not a huge fan of the misunderstanding/miscommunication trope and there was a lot of it here with Harlow. I wish we got a bit more clarification on where Charlene came in the picture with Harrison, but I don't want to say any more because spoilers. But she said my favorite line in the whole book.
"“Give him another chance, Harlow. I know you’re scared. So is he. But isn’t that how the best fairy tales are supposed to be? Overcoming all odds to be together?”
Please give us more on Charlene. You hinted at more! The story was extremely well written and I loved why Harlow left town sometimes. (Spoilers) There's an bonus scene you can download at the very end.
