Yoshihiro Togashi (冨樫義博) is a manga artist. Credited in Chinese translations as Fu Jian Yi Bo.
He began drawing manga at an early age; while he attended college, the publisher Shueisha recognized his talent. Togashi has authored numerous manga series in different genres during the past three decades. He is perhaps best known for writing and illustrating the YuYu Hakusho and Hunter × Hunter series, both of which have been published in the popular Weekly Shōnen Jump magazine. Togashi is married to Naoko Takeuchi, the author of Sailor Moon.
Yusuke steps into the ring and goes at it with the beast known as Toguro.
This fight is what you expect. First, both showing off their skills at one level. Then Yusuke powering up. Then Toguro powering up. This is Shonen Battle to a tee. Then by the end, we get a death that is unexpected and Yusuke's reaction is so bitter you can't help but feel his pain. The battle here is brutal as each character suffers hits to the stomach, face, and so on. The ending leaving us eager for more.
This is Yu Yu Hakusho at it's very best and I can't get enough of it. This is my childhood and I love reliving it.
Between this and the first half of vol 13, I'm starting to see why this series is considered a master piece. For this review I'm also going to talk about the first half of vol 13, since it's kind of inseparable as the conclusion of the Dark Tounrament arc.
These chapters have been the peak of the series for me. They feature the best action and the most emotion since the sentimental first volume. Toguro has always been more human than the archetypal shonen antagonist, but he gets more fleshed (and also more visually frightening) here. To the point where his final words brought me to drunken tears. He sees a lot of himself in Yusuke, and in the end tried to make Yusuke into a better version of himself. Unlike the demon that turned Toguro into a power obsessed monster, Toguro spared Kuwabara's life. This brings out Yusuke's power without scarring Yusuke the same way he was. Toguro is still an undeniable monster, but in his last battle with Yusuke and in his last words to Genkai, his remaining humanity shone through. I haven't read beyond the Dark Tournament, but it seems Toguro might have been aware of Sakyo's ambition and those who would continue it, so maybe he was trying to prepare Yusuke for the coming battles? I could very well be reading too much into it, but Toguro's apology to Genkai leads me to believe that he didn't miss Kuwabara's heart accidentally. And this kind of emotional, interpersonal depth is Yu Yu Hakusho's greatest strength.

Though I know how it turns out, it still gets me every time.
Yusuke holds agents Toguro so Keiko and the others don't get hurt. In the anime he gives a nice little speech saying how he would like to grow old with her, very cute. And is the first time he openly admits to loving her.
But man that scene, gets me every time. Just the look on Yusuke's face, pure hurt, defeat, and helplessness.
The fighting is intense, and the art work is masterfully done as if you’re right there, standing on the sidelines watching it.
Yusuke really grows in this volume, he lost some of that snark and finally experiences lose. It’s a low blow for him, as he has always managed to come out on top no matter the situation.
This is a quick volume, as most of it, is fighting, but it’s one of the best, because of the emotions and changes we get to see in Yusuke.
Decent. The only thing I would say is this is pretty predictable, other than that floppy thing being Genkai and her telling Toguro to kill Yusuke's friends.
When you think about her character, and how she repeatedly emphasises that she's not some fighter for justice, her actions and reasoning make sense and are consistent. Some people might not like it but I get it personally.
This could have used being slower and a few more twists (i.e.: Yusuke whipping out a new attack or transformation). I like Toguro's soul snatching ability, and the aura bonds were a good touch. I also like how Yusuke doesn't get enraged her, its like he's defeated and in that moment he's set free, but still feels defeated. It's a nice change of a typical troupe.
I also must say, the art is definitely the most stylistically diverse here, but at the same time its has some really shoddy moments, thinking about when Yusuke fires that giant Reigun in Chapter 109.
Toguro subtly carried the whole Dark Tournament. The art makes some funky twists and turns while still conveying the no-nonsense attitude Toguro is capable of. No one likes when the spectators are involved in a fight, Toguro’s all too willing to drag em` in.
What Genkai teaches, and Yu Yu Hakusho to a larger extent, is that we keep ourselves in reserve. And for what? At what point do you give something your all? It was an impressive combined effort by friend and foe alike to have Yusuke’s fighting potential realized.
Yu Yu’s been about spirituality from the start. Spirituality in many respects is about using all your energies to their fullest extent. Leave nothing in the tank. Life at its fullest! My friends Hakusho might not live up to all our standards. The story’s age bleeds through at odd times. It’s not perfect. It’s art.
The Toguro Otouto fight here is peak Yu Yu Hakusho, peak Togashi, and peak battle manga.
Toguro's 100% Power form is especially interesting for the uncanny detail with which Togashi draws it, as well as the proto-Resident Evil nature of the design, but it's a little funny to think his feats are about the level of Dragon Ball before the formal introduction of alien races; one of the craziest things Toguro does is dissipates a Reigan with a kiai... which is something Tenshinhan did back in the second Tenkaichi Budoukai...!
While I appreciate the emotional beats in this fight, the biggest problem I'm having is how BORING the actual fighting actually is. Maybe I've been spoiled by Demon Slayer and Assassination Classroom, where there's more strategy than simple fake outs and punching people really hard, but watching the actual fight is just so fucking boring. I do love the emotional moments and learning more about Toguro's ideology, but the fight itself is not engaging. Other than that, this was a really good volume.
The fight between the elder Toguro and Kuwabara is probably one of my favorites in the series. We get to see Kuwabara's struggle to accept Genkai's death and dealing with the fact that his so-called friends thought he couldn't handle it. Toguro's constant torment of Kuwabara is hard to read (I just want to hit him so bad!), but watching Kuwabara's character continue to develop in this volume is the real highlight.
Judging from my former experience as a human, you're lacking something... a sense of peril. I think you're still... not really aware of how much danger you're in.
God, Toguro is such a great villain. Just wants to fight and prove himself. Pure power. Destruction. An honourable battle. A decisive victory. Hit things REALLY HARD. Watching these two slug it out is incredible.
Oh boy oh boy oh boy! This is what the story is all about. Fighting adversaries that are at your level. Going at the ones that match you, not taking down those who are bellow you. Don’t be satisfied with victories over the weak. When you take down the predators, that’s when you know you will survive.
this volume was so intense. we got a better look into toguro as a character, and also got to see the progress yusuke made. it really was a lot. but i loved it
