“This shall be my legacy. A brand new day...no, a brand new age. The age of The Superior Spider-Man...the greatest hero of them all. And nothing will stand in my way.”

Dan Slott, with some help from Christos Gage, and a plethora of artists, including Ryan Stegman, Humberto Ramos, and Giuseppe Camuncoli, keeps the Superior Spider-Man train going with a second oversized volume that is even better than the already amazing first one. Collecting Superior Spider-Man Volumes 2 & 3, which contains issues #6-16, we finally see SpOck realizing just how difficult it is to juggle a personal life with super heroics. He’s trying to get his doctorate again since Parker never got one, while also having to deal with the emergence of villains such as Spider-Slayer, Kingpin, and Hobogoblin. His arrogance continually causes him problems, yet he still does manage to truly be a Superior Spider-Man, using methods and tactics Peter Parker was never willing to. He creates an army of spider drones to monitor the city, recruits an army of ex-military to work for him, and reworks Smythe’s Spider-Slayers so he can have a functioning robot army. It’s kinda wild just how far Otto is willing to go to prove to himself he is the better man.

I think the most impressive aspect of this book is how every single storyline feels important here, and like it is all building towards a big conclusion. “Joking Hazard”, “Independence Day”, and “A Blind Eye” are all strong one-shots, each one allowing Slott to take a breather of sorts after doing multi-part arcs. Both three parters, “Troubled Mind” and “No Escape” are the highlights of the book, with “Troubled Mind” part 3 in issue #9 being the best single issue from the entire series so far, with an emotional and depressing battle between Otto & Peter showing just how dark this series could get. The book wraps with a great two parter in “Run, Goblin, Run” that perfectly sets the stage for the final oversized volume.

Everything about this series so far has been...Superior (pun intended). SpOck’s character arc is such an amazing one, with the companions and tie-ins doing a perfect job to make his time as Spidey feel all the more fleshed out. Like he really just fucked up parts of Parker’s life he didn’t care about and just did his own thing. The art is fantastic this volume as well. Ryan Stegman is still my favorite artist on this book, and it does suck a bit he only did two issues here, but one of them was #9, so that more than makes up for it. The other artists did a great job as well, and just like with the last volume, the art never feels inconsistent.

Superior Spider-Man is by far my favorite ongoing Spider-Man title ever, and it is honestly creeping towards the top of my all time list the more I get through it. This story is right up my alley, combining everything I love about superhero and Spider-Man comics into one glorious book. I don’t want this to ever end. I hope the final volume is as good as I remember it being.

What a fun friggin book! Never thought I’d be typing those words about a Spidey title (let alone in two consecutive reviews, see Superior Spider-Man Volume 1 Oversized HC ). Dan Slott just keeps on truckin’ with this awesome 2nd Volume. This edition contains both the 2nd and 3rd collections (A Troubled Mind and No Escape respectively) in one super-sized hardcover. Still loving hearing Otto’s voice come out of Peter’s mouth. Mr.Slott is clearly enjoying his opportunity to write this almost as much as I enjoy reading it. Peter’s maniacal “MWA-HA-HA” is right on the mark. Seeing Spidey mix it up with the Avengers, another vigilante (Cardiac who?), and kick the ever-loving snot out of a couple 3rd string villains was pretty entertaining too. This book takes a more serious tone than the first volume at times, but I had no issue with those moments and enjoyed them just as much. The Shadowland stuff wasn’t quite as captivating as the last book, but don’t get me wrong, this is still awesome stuff. And, nut-shots are always funny.

The art continues to be another asset to this series. Ramos, Stegman, and Camuncoli continue to crush it providing the dazzling artwork in this collection. All of them are at the top of their game and if they keep this up, I’m in for the long haul (or at least 3 more trades). While it isn’t to everyone’s taste, Ramos’s cartoony style continues to appeal to me the most and I really love seeing his take on the Avengers and Spidey’s Rogues.

Definitely an easy recommend and I’m anxious to get my grubby mitts on the next volume ASAP.

Was bisher geschah:
Dem sterbenden Doc Ock ist es gelungen, sein Ich in den Körper von Peter Parker zu übertragen. Peter kann nur als Geist zusehen, was Doc Ock in seinem Namen und in seinem Körper als Spider-Man anstellt:

“Oh, God, this is bad.
So much worse than just dying.
He´s out there. With my face! My knowledge! My powers!
Who knows what he´s up to - -
What crimes he´s commiting in my name!
Forget Spider-Man, as Peter Parker what could he do to my friends …?
…Or my family?“

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F-q8p...

The first volume sets up the premise and we see conflict along the way with Peter Parker and Doc Ock (otto) over who runs/owns/inhabits Peter's body. This volume mostly moves past that conflict with Otto firmly in control. We see him work to do everything Peter should have done, finish his degree, spend time with family, work better with authorities (sometimes), and leverage tech to keep an eye out in the city for when he is needed. Otto takes some perverse satisfaction from being a better Peter Parker than Peter Parker was and begins to ramp up towards bigger and better things. But, this causes conflict with suspicious Avengers and others who know something is off. And the Green Goblin has an end-game he is working towards and it seems Otto/Parker is about to be caught unawares.

This one was more fun that the first volume and I can see why there was a lot of positive buzz about this series. The third volume is in hand and is about twice as thick as volume 1.

I'm really liking this run. Slott maintain the premise of the story very interesting. I'm not the biggest fan of Ramos' art on this, but I reaally loved what Ryan Stegman did in a couple of issues (#9-10). Looking forward to read the volume 3!

I know some people like to hate on Dan Slott sometimes due to his writing, but it’s hard to do it for this title. The premise is (comic book) simple: Dr. Ock is in a prison of maximum security and is dying. Peter’s life is (for once) going pretty well - he’s thinking about getting back with MJ and is even a part-time Avenger. But we’re talking about Peter Parker here, so…things are obviously about to change because Dr. Ock is going to switch bodies with Peter! It was a silly idea that got Slott in deep trouble with many fans, but he ultimate won them over by executing brilliantly.

- Volume 2
- In this volume, Dr. Ock continues to flourish in his life (and we get more about a new character that I really liked, Ana Maria) and career, as well as in his role as a better Spider-Man. We see how MJ and other characters feel like something is off with Peter…which felt a bit too choreographed for me, though I do have the benefit of knowing what’s going on. Anyway, Slott finds a way to frame the story as “Otto can’t turn his back on the responsibility that comes with being Spider-Man”. At first this was in part because Peter is still in the body’s mind - just trapped. But then more so because Dr. Ock really feels like he’s the most capable to do the job. I guess Shadowland event happened around this time so there’s one issue whew we see Spidey deal with some of that. It doesn’t flow great but it’s not too bad.

In terms of the art, I think it was okay. It serves the story well and moves it forward. The artists (e.g., Ramos) often drew the character with an obloid-skinny-like shape that just doesn’t sit right with me. It looks too cartoony - I know, I know. It’s a comic book, but it still could have been better. It’s just too pointy. Too thick and too skinny all at once. The story is what really shines.

One thing that bothered me throughout the series was how the Avengers reacted to Spidey’s newfound ways of handling crime. It’s a bit hypocritical that Cap, Black Widow, Wolverine, Thor, and Spider-Woman would act so sanctimonious about the way he was handling villains. Yes, you can tell the guy ‘hey you’re acting weird, cmon’ but really? Going as far as fight him? - I get it, it adds some good ole superhero tension, but you’ve all done worse.

7/10 for the art and 9/10 for the story.

Despite missing Volume 2, this comic effectively summarizes the ongoing narrative, focusing on Otto's struggle with the dual identity of Peter Parker/Spider-Man. The story cleverly explores the echoes of Peter's own autonomy struggles, as Otto's Superior Spider-Man persona employs tactics that Peter would never use against his enemies. This shift in behavior raises suspicions among Spider-Man's allies and friends, adding depth to the narrative, wouldn't mind reading the first volume (if I can find it) for a better understanding of the series.

Volume 2 continues the plot of Volume 1, but mostly focuses on Otto's increasing grasp on Spider-Man's powers and it introduces some villains, including an overarching one. The art is usually good, better than it was in Venom. I am looking forward to reading Volume 3, which is double in size.

Still superior in every way. Art, story, pacing all top notch. I would highly recommend this even for people who don’t read comics or Spider-Man in general 🕷

Despite a sort of inherently goofy premise, this delivers a more storyline than most spider man books I’ve read.

In all honesty, i love this run. Superior Spidey is absolutely fantastic and a really refreshing take on web slinger.

The story continues from issue #5 where spidey took care of the villain with the name Massacre and now he continues on "building" a more vigilante-type of hero image (which is pretty interesting).

Lots of action, a lot more moral dilemmas and tons of fun!

I put off reading this series for years because I wasn't interested in a Doc Ock book. Big Mistake. This was an original nuanced take on both Spidey and Doctor Octopus. Well worth the read.

We got into Superior Spider-Man in our end of year episode of Comic Book Coffee Break: https://previously-on-x-men.libsyn.co...

Some devastating and exhilarating moments here. But who can first? “Spider-Slayer” or the Predalien?

(It was the Predalien I ain’t even gotta look)
