This is an excellent sequel! After reading Geiger's first book in the Koranin series, "Snowfalls South", I was eagerly anticipating this book. And Geiger did not disappoint! The Prince and the Apprentice is the wonderful, continuing tale of the battle for Koranin, the elven country that has been invaded from the North by the gruesome Guriks, a fierce, vengeful race of beasts who wish to take control of the elves' beloved home. This book, like it's predecessor, is filled with spectacular battles, magic, and heroic characters. As the elves battle to take back their capitol city, they face countless obstacles and betrayals that leave them striving to create more clever means of facing down their foes. Relying on unlikely heroes, dragons, and immortal beings to help them in their pursuits, this book, much like Snowfalls South, reveals the beauty and strength of spirit that lives so fiercely in its main characters: Prince Phylen Roloviel, the once smart-mouthed and rash teenager who has now become the young King of Koranin; Ayak Thule Roloviel, his adopted brother and heroic elven scout; Wyren, apprentice to the once Grand Mage of Koranin; Faelion, the young elf who began as a simple farmer's son and reluctantly becomes a brave and important warrior and leader, and Felweith, the young elf who also joined Ayak's ranks in the beginning of the war and who becomes a heroic leader herself. I loved this book and look forward to the third and final book in the trilogy!
