The three siblings, Jess, Flip, and Tigger are inseparable. A single entity in childhood, they remain so when they move to frenzied downtown Manhattan and become part of a decadent demi-monde moving to the heartbeat of music and drugs, fashion, and celebrity. Then on New Year's Eve 1989, Flip opens The Breeders Box, the defining nightclub of the tail-end of a decade of fast living and reckless glamour. Their tightly knit world will change forever.
Found this book in a charity shop for two pound and went into reading it with no expectations. Found my self gripped to the narrative for the most part and deeply invested in the characters. The exploration of queer identity in the 80s made me almost envy the characters despite the misfortune of their lives. Story dipped a bit in the middle but the ended picks up fast and ending hit me by surprise, overall really good novel !
I've read this book twice and will definitely read it again. If you've ever been in a nightclub, LOVED every tune and never wanted the night to never end, then read the breeders box. It covers most of life's experiences and is such a great read. The characters are so real and you feel like you're in the middle of the story with them all. It could shock you, make you angry, make you laugh and probably make you cry. What more do you want from a book?
What makes up a family? What makes up a relationship? What are the taboos? It is all visited here in the Breeders Box....a tale of historical "Disco Inferno" New York fiction; a story of love with protection that won't let you go. A fascinating message that made me wish there was a sequel. Highly recommended.
