Darren used to watch movies for a living. It's not as fun as it sounds. Now he writes the YA horror/comedy series PETER AND THE MONSTERS, about a 10-year-old boy who moves into his grandfather's creepy old mansion and bad, baaaaad things start to happen. PETER AND THE VAMPIRES (Volume One) is currently free on Amazon.
More great Peter stories! I'm not crazy about the ninja aspect of this volume (just personal preference), but I still love Peter and Grandfather and the great mix of horror and humor, as well as how Peter tries to do the right thing.
Peter stares long into the abyss that awaits us all eventually.
This adventure starts off innocently enough; after spending several grueling days in the Room Without Time [a room in Grandfather's house where time slows to a crawl] taking his first steps toward becoming a ninja, Peter needs a break. He and Dill wind up hanging out with some kids from their school and the topic of haunted houses comes up. When his grandfather's house's "spooky qualifications" are called into question, Peter finds himself on the short end of a dare to approach another supposedly haunted house [he realizes the absurdity of the situation but still succumbs].
As you can guess, the house is indeed haunted by the spirit of a troubled woman named Lydia Sartoris; she fell in love with a man who ended up eloping with her sister, never to be heard from again. Though bear in mind that the "troubled" part of the epitaph preceded her death and the curse on Peter's family and town that attracts evil, when considering her story...The ending is more somber than you might hope for but it really resonated with me.
I love the first line of this book 'Being a Ninja SUCKED.' Kids, the fact that anything might be hard work is a foreign concept to them. Despite the first part of the book being about Peter's ninja training, the author does a great job of keeping things interesting.
But its once we meet Lydia, the ghost, that things really start to pick up. The ghost is truly terrifying, and because she doesn't have a physical form to harm Peter's new ninja training can only help him so much.
At least this time Grandfather volunteers information to help Dill and Peter, and even plays a significant role in defeating the wandering spirit. Overall this is a very solid and fun entry into the Peter and the Monsters series.
