James Hadley Chase pseudonimo di René Raymond, è nato a Londra nel 1906 ed è morto nel 1985. Nel 1939 ha sfondato nel campo della narrativa gialla con un romanzo di grande successo, Niente orchidee per Miss Blandish , uno dei mystery più venduti di tutti i tempi. Scrittore prolifico, ha dato alle stampe più di ottanta “romanzi di suspense”, come lui stesso amava definirli.

About the author

René Lodge Brabazon Raymond was born on 24th December 1906 in London, England, the son of Colonel Francis Raymond of the colonial Indian Army, a veterinary surgeon. His father intended his son to have a scientific career, was initially educated at King's School, Rochester, Kent. He left home at the age of 18 and became at different times a children's encyclopedia salesman, a salesman in a bookshop, and executive for a book wholesaler before turning to a writing career that produced more than 90 mystery books. His interests included photography (he was up to professional standard), reading and listening to classical music, being a particularly enthusiastic opera lover. Also as a form of relaxation between novels, he put together highly complicated and sophisticated Meccano models.

In 1932, Raymond married Sylvia Ray, who gave him a son. They were together until his death fifty three years later. Prohibition and the ensuing US Great Depression (1929–1939), had given rise to the Chicago gangster culture just prior to World War II. This, combined with her book trade experience, made him realise that there was a big demand for gangster stories. He wrote as R. Raymond, James Hadley Chase, James L. Docherty, Ambrose Grant and Raymond Marshall.

During World War II he served in the Royal Air Force, achieving the rank of Squadron Leader. Chase edited the RAF Journal with David Langdon and had several stories from it published after the war in the book Slipstream: A Royal Air Force Anthology.

Raymond moved to France in 1956 and then to Switzerland in 1969, living a secluded life in Corseaux-sur-Vevey, on Lake Geneva, from 1974. He eventually died there peacefully on 6 February 1985.

Another classic thriller you find rarely in works of modern-day writers. The plot is simple laced with usual elements of sex, greed and crime. However, what makes it interesting is the way characters are shaped as the storyline progresses.

হ্যাডলি চেইজ পড়িনি কখনও। এই বইটার নাম শুনেছিলাম কোথাও। রেলস্টেশনে দেখতে পেয়ে কিনলাম। কিন্তু খুব বেশি পড়ার সুযোগ পাইনি সেদিন। একটা গুরুগম্ভীর বই নিয়ে বসেছিলাম আজকে দুপুরবেলা। কিন্তু পাড়ার দুর্গাপূজার মণ্ডপ থেকে ভেসে আসা বাজনার আওয়াজে সেই বই পড়া ভন্ডুল হয়ে গ্যালো। গুরুগম্ভীর বই বন্ধ রেখে এটা পড়লাম।

প্রবল ঢাকের আওয়াজ, মাইকে লতা মঙ্গেশকরের আওয়াজ সত্ত্বেও বইটা দিব্যি শেষ করতে পারলাম। এই জন্যে একটা তারা। শেষ দশ পৃষ্ঠার আগে পর্যন্ত রীতিমত টেনে ধরে রেখেছিলো গল্পের রহস্য। সেই জন্যে আরেকটা তারা। আর কোনোদিন পড়বো হ্যাডলি চেইজ? না। এটা উপলব্ধি করানোর জন্যে বাকি তিনটে তারা কেটে নিলাম।

Gilda Delaney is a young,attractive woman.Her husband Jack is a cripple,confined to a wheel chair.They live in a secluded cabin.

Gilda wants money,she has no use for her husband.She needs an accomplice to set her plan in motion.When Terry Regan drops into the cabin to sell them a TV set,Gilda knows she has found her man,as she uses her charms on him.

The scheming,gold digging woman is a staple of Chase books.So are young men who get seduced by such women to commit any crime.
The Wary Transgressor by Chase is a similar story.

Still,fairly interesting.

Terry Regan, who'd dropped into the Delaneys' lodge up at Blue Jay Lake to offer them a TV set, took in the circumstance initially. Gilda was youthful and stunningly appealing. Jack Delany was an awful, hard-drinking cripple, detained in a wheelchair. Regan ought to have abandoned them ... be that as it may, he didn't.

Another James Hadley Chase chiller, It keeps you intrigued. A quick pace suspence novel.

Terry Regan is a radio and television salesman who sells a custom-made set to Jack Delaney, an inveterate drunk who is confined to a wheel-chair because of a motor accident caused by his wife. The couple live in Glyn Camp, a small town outside Los Angeles.

Regan takes a fancy to the attractive wife who is considerably younger than her husband and an affair begins. Regan is infatuated and wants Gilda for himself but Delaney is, despite his invalidity, hale and hearty.

However, he devises an ingenious plot to get rid of him, a plot that he feels is completely fool-proof But ingenious murder plots do have a habit of backfiring and this one does, despite his great attention to detail.

The plot seems to have worked and when the Glyn Camp sheriff arrives with a doctor the pair agree with Regan that it is a sad accident. But once the insurance agent, Maddox, gets involved the tale takes a definite twist. Maddox has always won cases when he suspects insurance fraud and in this particular one he definitely feels that is the case. The LA police, who have been called in, eventually agree and Gilda is arrested, although she does not admit the crime.

In court Gilda is charged with her husband's murder, Regan is most distressed and in private he tells her that he committed the crime. A top class defence lawyer is engaged and the jury eventually find Gilda not guilty and she disappears to Los Angeles and then New York, leaving Regan high and dry without a farewell. Regan is crestfallen for she does not appear to want him any more.

He eventually relocates to Los Angeles and then to New York where he unexpectedly arrives on Gilda's doorstep once more to find her circumstances considerably changed. Then history repeats itself, her husband dies and in a surprising twist another court case follows ...

Regan is once again bemused and can't believe the case of deja vu.

James Hadley Chase is the master of suspense and 'Shock Treatment' keeps the reader on the edge of the seat throughout with its fast pace, convincing setting, compelling dialogue and Chase's art of deception.

So Shock Treatment is a short Chase thriller published in 1959. It's the story of an older rich man confined to a wheelchair at home with a much younger wife whose beauty seduces a TV sales and repairman the older Delaney has has hired and brought into his home. The salesman, Terry Regan, is among Chase's most dimwitted protagonists, easily manipulated into involving himself in a murder and then destroying his life for the woman who walks away with all the money.

A year earlier, Chase, under the Raymond Marshall pseudonym, published Hit and Run, a story about Chester Scott who works for an ad agency. The man at the head of the agency, George Aitkin, breaks his leg and is confined to his home. Aitkin brings Ches into his home to brief him on every day's work. While there, Ches meets Aitkins much younger wife, Lucille, who seduces Ches into being involved in a murder. Ches is easily manipulated by Lucille but does manage to wake up to things half way through the novel.

Yes, two very similar stories. As was his wont with the Raymond Marshall books, Chase produced a much more layered psychological portrait in Hit and Run. it's the far better book, albeit the last of the Raymond Marshall titles. While you sympathize with Ches, you have nothing but contempt for Terry Regan's stupidity. Interesting that Chase could take two such matched tales and have you end up at opposite ends in your emotional reaction to the protagonists.

কাহিনী সংক্ষেপ - গিলডার প্রেমে মজে গিয়েছে টেরি রিগ্যান। কিন্তু তাদের ভালবাসার পথে একমাত্র সমস্যা - ডিলেনি; গিলডার পংগু স্বামী। ডিলেনির বেশ টাকা পয়সা থাকায় তাকে ছেড়ে আসতে মন চাইছে না গিল্ডার। ওদিকে গিলডাকে বিয়ে করে ডিলেনির টাকা দিয়ে নিজেকে প্রতিষ্ঠিত করতে চায় টেরি। তাহলে উপায়?
একটি টিভি সেটে সূক্ষ্ম কারিগরি পদ্ধতি ব্যবহার করে ডিলেনিকে খুন করবার নিখুঁত পরিকল্পনা তৈরী করে টেরি। কিন্তু তাতে রয়ে যায় অনেক গুলো কিন্তু আর যদি।
পরকীয়ার ছোবলে পড়ে অসহায় ডিলেনি কি খুন হয়ে যাবে? টেরির পরিকল্পনা কতটুকুই নিখুঁত? আর গিলডা? কেনইবা নিজের পংগু হবার জন্য গিলডাকে দায়ী করে ডিলেনি? কি হয়েছিল?
কি হবে?
আমার মত - জেমস হ্যাডলী চেজ তার সময়ের একজন নামকরা লেখক। লেখালেখির ৪৫ বছরের ক্যারিয়ারে বই লিখেছেন প্রায় ৯০ টা (আমার জানামতে). প্রায় সবগুলোই বেষ্ট সেলার। আমি বেশি একটা পড়িনি তবে রুপান্তরের বদৌলতে কিছু পড়া হইছে আর ইন্ডিয়ান এক সমগ্রের কারণে মোট ১৫-২০ টা হবে। মজার ব্যাপার হল উনার প্রায় সব বই এর ধাচ এক - এক রমণী যে চোখ ধাঁধানো সুন্দরী। কোন কারণে সে নিজের পরিস্থিতির উপর সন্তুষ্ট নয়। হয় স্বামীর কারণে নয়ত বাবার কারণে। হটাৎ তার জীবনে আসে এক আগন্তুক যে কিনা সেই রমণীরর প্রেমে পড়ে যায়। এরপর....
যাইহোক উনার প্রতিটা বই কিন্তু বেষ্ট সেলার। তার কারণ হল উনার বই এ এই খুন প্রধান নয়, প্রধাণ হল খুনের ধরণ আর তারপরের ঘটনা। কিন্তু আর সব বই এর সাথে এই বই এর কিছু সুক্ষ্ম পার্থক্য আছে। প্রথমত একটা সেকেন্ড টুইষ্ট, আর দ্বিতীয়ত উপস্থাপনার ভংগি।
নায়ক চরিত্র টেরি একটা বলদ। চোখের সামনে সব সাক্ষ্য প্রমাণ থাকলেও সে মাথাকে না মনকেই প্রাধান্য দেয়। বাশ ত খেতেই হবে। তবে সেকেন্ড টুইষ্টটা আসলেই মজার।
অনুবাদ সম্পর্কে বলার আগে প্রকাশনা সম্পর্কে বলি। এটি তাদের প্রথম বই। কিছু ত্রুটি থাকাই স্বাভাবিক। তবে উনার বিজনেস পলিসিটা ভাল লাগল না। কাভার ব্যাক কাভার খুব ভাল আর পাতা মোটামুটি দিয়ে দাম ১২০ রাখাটার পিছনে কারণ বোধগম্য নয়। পেপারব্যাক বই এর দাম এত বেশী হবার কোন কারণ দেখি না। টাইপসেট ও বেশি বড়। আরেকটু কমালেও আপত্তি ছিল না।
এইটুকু বাদে বাকি কাজ ভাল। বানান ভুল নেই বললেই চলে, বাধাই ভাল, ছাপার ভুলও নেই। তাই কাজ ভালই দেখিয়েছেন, শুধু দামের দিকটা একটু
পর্যালোচনা করা দরকার।
অনুবাদ প্রসংগে বলব - ভাল। দুই একটা জায়গায় কথা বলা দরকার। প্রথমত অনুবাদ বই এর নাম আদি নামই মানায় বেশি - সব পরকীয়াই বিষাক্ত, ফুলেল কোন পরকীয়া আছে বলে জানা নেই :)
দ্বিতীয়ত, অনুবাদের ক্ষেত্রে অনুবাদক যে সব জায়গায় চ্যাপ্টার শেষ করেছেন, সে সব জায়গায় থামাই ভাল। কেননা সাধারণত চ্যাপ্টারগুলো পাঞ্চলাইন দিয়ে শেষ হয়। যেটা মেইন্টেইন না করলে লাইনের পাঞ্চটা হেভিওয়েট না হয়ে লাইটওয়েট হয়ে যায়।
অনুবাদ বেশ সাবলীল, তবে ভুল যে নেই তা কিন্তু না। ভাল দিক হচ্ছে ভুল গুলো কাহিনীতে কোন ছন্দপতন আনে না, খুঁটিয়ে খুঁটিয়ে না পড়লে ধরাই কঠিন। সে দিক থেকে অনুবাদ ভাল।
খারাপ দিক হচ্ছে অনুবাদে ইনফর্মাল শব্দ নিয়ে আসা। তোমার জীবন তামাতামা হয়ে গেল, সে দাত ভেটকালো - এগুলী এড়ায়া চলাই ভাল ছিল। খটকা লাগে এই জায়গায়।
আরেকটা জিনিস যেটা আগেই বলেছি, পাঞ্চ লাইন গুলোকে আরও গুরুত্ব দিয়ে অনুবাদ করা উচিত ছিল। হালকা হয়ে গেছে। এসেন্স ঠিক মত আসে নি।
অনুবাদের দুই একটা ভুলের উদাহরণ যা নজরে লাগে - ১৫০০ ডলার কে ১৫ হাজার লেখা, আর দুই জায়গায় "না" না লেখা। এছাড়াও দুই একটা সমস্যা আছে যা রূপান্তর বলে মানিয়ে যায়।
শেষ ব্যাপারটা হল ইংরেজী ইউ এর বাংলা অনুবাদে হাস্যকর রকমের তালগোল পেকে যাওয়া। ইউ মানে তুমিও হয় আবার আপনিও হয়। কিন্তু অনুবাদে প্রথমে আপনি পরে তুমি হবে। সেটা স্বাভাবিকভাবেই লেখা যেত - ঠিক করেছি এখন থেকে তুমি করেই বলব, এভাবে বলার কোন দরকার নেই।
আজকাল হাতে বেশ কিছু অনুবাদ আসছে যেগুলো বেশ ভাল। এটা ভাল দিক। উল্টাপাল্টা অনুবাদের চক্করে সাবলীল, সহজ অনুবাদ ভালই লাগে। সাঈম শামসকে ধন্যবাদ সহজ, সাবলীল একটা অনুবাদ দেয়ার জন্য, তবে আরও উন্নতি আশা করব উনার কাছ থেকে।
আর নব্য প্রকাশনীর ১ম বই হিসেবে পরমানু বেশ ভালই কাজ দেখিয়েছে (অন্তত বেশ কিছু প্রতিষ্ঠিত প্রকাশনীর চেয়ে), শুধু বই এর পাতা গুলোর দিকে একটু নজর দেবার অনুরোধ থাকবে।

The story was predictable... very predictable. The summary on the back/front of the book gives away the whole plot.
And since I read a translated copy let me say something about the translation. Could have been better. There were several mistakes throughout the whole book and I almost sat down with a pencil to encircle those. Almost. The only thing stopping me from doing so was the fact that I prefer my books unmarked. The actual translation aside, it was like nobody even bothered to proof-read before printing it. Disappointing really...

কাহিনী মাঝারি মানের কিন্তু অনুবাদক খেল দেখাইসে.....পড়তে গিয়ে মনে হইসে সেবার অনুবাদ পরতেসি.....অথচ অনুবাদকের নাম আগে শুনি নাই....তার কাছ থেলে আর ভালো ভালো বই আশা করতেসি....অনুবাদ ৫ আউট অফ ৫.....

রিভিউ – বিষাক্ত পরকীয়া

বইটি হাতে পাই গতকাল সন্ধ্যার দিকে। ভেবেছিলাম কয়েকদিন পরে পড়া যাবে। কিন্তু রাতে হঠাৎ ইচ্ছে হল কয়েক পৃষ্ঠা পড়ে দেখি কেমন লাগে! শুধু কয়েক পৃষ্ঠাই, পুরো বই পরে পড়ে দেখব ক্ষণ। কিন্তু তখন কি জানতাম কী হতে যাচ্ছে সামনে! জানলে তখন কয়েক পৃষ্ঠা পড়তে যেতাম না। কারণ সেই কয়েক পৃষ্ঠা পড়তে গিয়ে আমি কখন যে পৃষ্ঠার পর পৃষ্ঠা উল্টে গেছি নিজেও জানি না! শেষ পর্যন্ত যখন পড়া থামাই তখন বিস্ময়ের সাথে দেখি বইটি পড়া শেষ।

কাহিনী সংক্ষেপ-
টেরি রিগ্যান। টিভি নিয়েই তার কাজ কারবার। মি. ডিলেনি তাকে দায়িত্ব দিলেন একটি বিশেষ টিভি সেট বানিয়ে দেবার। এই ধরণের সেট বানানোর অনেক দিন দিন ধরে ইচ্ছা টেরির। আর সে কিনা সেই টিভি সেটেই সূক্ষ্ম কারিগরি ফলাতে গেল, তাও কি না ডিলেনিকে মারার জন্য!! কিন্তু কেন? তার পিছনে কারণ হিসেবে কাজ করছে ডিলেনির সুন্দরী স্ত্রী গিলডা। তারপর? শেষ পর্যন্ত কী হবে?

বইটির মূল চরিত্র তিনজন। টেরি, গিলডা, ডিলেনি। এছাড়া জেফারসন, ম্যাডক্স, হারমাস সহ আরও কিছু গুরুত্বপূর্ণ চরিত্র রয়েছে। কাহিনী মূলত একটি পরকীয়া প্রেম এবং একটি খুনের পরিকল্পনাকে ঘিরে এগিয়ে গেছে। কাহিনীর পরতে পরতে উত্তেজনা, রহস্য এসবের ছড়াছড়ি ছিল যা একেবারে বইয়ের শেষ পর্যন্ত পাঠককে টেনে নিয়ে যায়। কাহিনীর আরেকটি উল্লেখযোগ্য দিক হল কিছু কিছু জায়গায় সরাসরি পাঠককে কিছু না বলা। এমনভাবে জায়গাগুলো বর্ণিত হয়েছে যেন কি হয়েছে তা পাঠক ঠিকই ধারণা করে নিতে পারে। অবস্থাটা এরকম আপনি বুঝতে পারছেন হয়ত এমনটাই ঘটেছে, কিন্তু আবার জোর দিয়েও বলতে পারছেন না। সব মিলিয়ে এক উপভোগ্য লেখা।

এর আগে জেমস হ্যাডলি চেজ এর মাত্র একটি বই পড়া ছিল আমার। “দি গোল্ড ফিস হ্যাভ নো হাইডিং প্লেস”। কোন ভারতীয় প্রকাশনীর অনুবাদ ছিল সেটা। বইটি পড়ে তেমন একটা ভাল লাগে নি। তার পিছনে একটা কারণ অবশ্যই ছিল অনুবাদের মান। অনুবাদের মান তেমন একটা সুবিধার ছিল না। তাছাড়া কাহিনীও আমার খুব একটা ভাল লাগে নি। তবে এই বইটার ক্ষেত্রে সম্পূর্ণ বিপরীত অনুভূতি কাজ করেছে। কাহিনী বেশ ভাল বলা চলে। উত্তেজনা বইয়ের শেষ পর্যন্ত সঙ্গী ছিল।

বইটির অনুবাদক সাঈম শামস ভাই। এটাই তার প্রকাশিত প্রথম অনুবাদ। যদিও তার অনুবাদ পড়ার সুযোগ এর আগেও আমার হয়েছে। বইয়ের পোকা ♦ ( The INSECT of books ) গ্রুপের অনলাইন পত্রিকা ‘বইপোকা’ এর ২য় সংখ্যায় তার একটি অনুবাদ গল্প ছিল। সে গল্পটির অনুবাদ বেশ ভাল লেগেছিল। সেই ভাল লাগা এই বইটি পড়ে আরও বেড়ে গেল। অনুবাদ বেশ সাবলীল ও প্রাঞ্জল। কিছু কিছু জায়গায় সমস্যা থাকলেও তা বইটি পড়ার সময় কোন সমস্যার সৃষ্টি করে না। তাছাড়া একজন নবীন অনুবাদক হিসেবে যত ভুল হবার কথা তার তুলনায় যা হয়েছে তা নিতান্ত নগণ্য। সামনেই সাঈম শামস ভাই এর আরেকটি অনুবাদ আসছে বাতিঘর প্রকাশনী থেকে। সেই বইটির পড়ার অপেক্ষায় আছি।

এই বইটি ‘পরমানু প্রকাশনী’র প্রথম বই। সে হিসেবে তারা দারুণ কাজই করেছে বলা চলে। তবে প্রুফ রিডিং এর ক্ষেত্রে তাদের আরও খেয়াল দিতে হবে। অল্প কিছু বানান ভুল রয়েছে, সেটা তেমন সমস্যার নয়। তবে মাঝে মাঝেই কিছু শব্দ মিসিং হয়েছে সেটা বিরক্তিকর। শব্দগুলো পড়ার সময় অনুমান করে নিতে হয়েছে। এই সমস্যা ছাড়া অন্যান্য ক্ষেত্রে আমার অভিযোগ নেই বললেই চলে। আশা করি আগামীতে তারা আরও অনেক বই পাঠকদের উপহার দিবে।

'কিং অফ থ্রিলার' জেমস হেডলি চেজের রহস্যোপন্যাস। কী নেই এতে? খুন-জখম, মোহনীয় নারী চরিত্রও, অর্থের প্রতি মানুষের আদিম লোভ, তুখোড় গোয়েন্দা, করিৎকর্মা উকিল!
টেরি রিগ্যান-একজন টিভি মেকানিক। বিয়ে থা করেননি। একলা মানুষ। টিভির কাজ করেই তাকে জীবিকা অর্জন করতে হয়।
সেই টিভি বিক্রির ধান্ধায়ই ... একদিন ডিলেনি সাহেবের বাসায় তার আগমন।
কিন্ত, মিসেস ডিলেনি, মানে, গিলডা ডিলেনিকে এক পলক দেখেই সে তৎক্ষণাৎ তার প্রেমে পরে যায়। টেরি রিগ্যান মেয়েটিকে কিভাবে বর্ণনা করেছিল, তা লেখক(পড়ুন অনুবাদক) এর জবানিতেই শুনে নেয়া যাকঃ
"গিলডা ডিলেনির সাথে আমার প্রথম দর্শনে এমন কিছু ছিল যেটা আমি কখনও ভুলতে চাই না। সে লম্বায় মাঝারি উচ্চতার চেয়ে একটু বেশি, গায়ের রঙ সোনালি, যেমনটা সূর্য ওঠার ঘন্টাখানিক পরে দেখা যায়। চুলগুলো পালিশ করা ব্রোঞ্জ রঙ এর, নেমে এসেছে কাঁধ পর্যন্ত। গভীর নীল বড় বড় চোখ। একজন পুরুষ যেমন নারী কামনা করে, সে ঠিক তেমনি। তাকে দেখে যে-কোনো পুরুষের ভেতরটা মুচড়ে উঠবেই। তার পড়নে ছিল লাল কাউবয় শার্ট আর নীল জিন্স। দুটোর সমন্বয়ে তাকে অসাধারণ লাগছিল। শরীরের অবয়ব ফুটে উঠছিল দারুণভাবে, ব্যাপারটা দেখার মত।"
যা হোক, টেরি এবং গিলডা এক সময় ঘনিষ্ঠ হয়। অন্তরঙ্গ সময়ও কাটায়। এবং স্বভাবতই, টেরি তার প্রতি ভীষণ ভাবে দুর্বল হয়ে পরে। কিন্ত গিলডা কিছুদিন পরেই নানান অজুহাত দেখিয়ে টেরির কাছ থেকে দূরে সরে যায়। গিলডাকে না পেয়ে টেরির তো পাগলপ্রায় অবস্থা। সে তাই গিলডাকে পাওয়ার জন্য ঠিক করে ডিলেনিকে খুন করবে। পরিকল্পনা হচ্ছে, টিভি সেটে সূক্ষ্ম কারিকুরি ফলিয়ে খুন কার্য সমাধা করা হবে।
যথা সময়ে খুন হল।
কিন্ত খুনটা কে করল? কীভাবে করল?
ডিলেনি কিভাবে মারা গেল সেটা বের করার জন্য তদন্তে নামলেন তুখোড় ইনভেস্টিগেটর ম্যাডক্স। প্রকৃত অপরাধীকে সে শাস্তি পাইয়েই ছাড়বে। এপর্যন্ত সে কোন কেস হারেনি।
লসন হান্টঃ করিৎকর্মা উকিল, ম্যাডক্সের চিরশত্রু। ভালো উকিল হওয়া সত্ত্বেও, এ পর্যন্ত তিনবার ম্যাডক্সের কাছে হেরে অপমানে অগ্নিশর্মা হয়ে আছে। ডিলেনির কেসে অপরাধী যেই হোক, অপরাধীকে বেকসুর খালাস করিয়ে ম্যাডক্সের মুখে ঝামা ঘসে দেয়ার কঠিন শপথ করেছে সে।
শুরু হয়ে গেল বুদ্ধিমত্তা ও কৌশলের এক শ্বাসরুদ্ধকর যুদ্ধ!

অনুবাদ সম্পর্কেঃ অনুবাদক সাঈম শামসের এটিই প্রথম উপন্যাস অনুবাদ। অনুবাদ একদম ঝরঝরে। এক মুহূর্তের জন্যও মনে হবে না, অনুবাদ পড়ছেন।

বইটা ভাল লেগে যাওয়ার প্রথম কারণ হল, স্বচ্ছতা। দর্শকের কাছে চরিত্রগুলো এখানে খোলা-মেলা। প্রধান ক্রীড়নক যে, সে ঘটনার সাথে যায় এখানে পাঠককে সাথে নিয়ে। ঘটনা ঘটিয়ে এসে পাঠককে শেষে গিয়ে জানায়না কিংবা আড়াল করতে করতে আগায়না। এতে যে সুবিধা হয়েছে, চরিত্র আর পাঠক এক বিন্দুতে থেকেছে বরাবর। তাতে, পাঠকের গতি থেকেছে গল্পের সমসাময়িক।

টিভি মেকানিক টেরি রিগ্যান, পঙ্গু ডিলেনির স্ত্রী গিলডাকে দেখার সাথে সাথেই দুদর্মনীয় এক আকর্ষণ অনূভব করে। গিলডার তরফ থেকে সাড়াও এলো খুব অপ্রত্যাশিতভাবে, খুব দ্রুত। তার ফলস্বরূপ পরকীয়া আর অপরাধের এই গল্পটার বীজ প্রোথিত হয়ে গেল। সে বীজ থেকে গল্প ডাল-পালা মেললো ডিলেনির মৃত্যু পর্যন্ত। তারপর থেকে গল্পের গাছটা বেড়ে উঠতে থাকলো দু’জন লোকের পেশাগত প্রতিযোগিতার ভেতর দিয়ে।

ছোট-মটো বইটায় খুব বেশি চরিত্র নেই আর দারুণ ব্যাপারটা হল, চরিত্রগুলো সময়োপযোগী হয়ে এসছে। থৃলারের প্রথাগত নিয়মে কিছু চরিত্র আড়ালে থেকে পরে হাজির হয় এমন না। গল্পের প্রয়োজনেই তাদের আগে আসার দরকার পড়েনি বা শুরুতে যে বলে এলাম “স্বচ্ছ গল্প”, সেটা মাথায় রেখে বলতে পারেন; সঠিক সময়েই সঠিক জায়গায় এসেছে চরিত্রগুলো।

টেরি রিগ্যান একটা অপরাধ ঘটায় যার লক্ষ্য ছিল গিলডা। অপরাধটা ঘটে যাওয়ার পর রিগ্যন যখন স্বস্ত্বির নিঃশ্বাস ফেলতে যাচ্ছে তখন ভীষণ যৌক্তিক ভাবে লসন হান্ট আর ম্যাডক্স আসে গল্পে। তখন গল্পটা চলে যায় এই দু’জনের পেশাগত প্রতিদ্বন্দ্বীতায়। আবার সেসময়ই আবিষ্কৃত হয় গল্পের সেকেন্ডারি টুইস্ট যেটা পাঠককে নড়ে-চড়ে বসতে বাধ্য করে; গোড়া থেকে পুরো ঘটনাকে আবার নতুন করে দেখতে বাধ্য করে।

খুব ছোট কলেবরে, অল্প কিছু চরিত্রের ভেতর দিয়ে দারুণ একটা গল্প বলেছেন জেমস হ্যাডলি চেজ। যেখানে চরিত্র আর পাঠক সমসাময়িক আগায় এবং সেকেন্ডারি টুইস্টটা পাঠকের মতো করে গল্পের চরিত্রদেরও অবাক করে। আর শেষ পর্যন্ত... নাহ! এরপর আর বলা বারণ।

সাঈম শাম্স ভাল অনুবাদ করেছেন আর কিছু জায়গায় ইমোশানের মুড ঠিক রাখতে গিয়ে বা হয়তো ইমপ্রোভাইজ করতে কিছু শব্দের যে অবতারণা করলেন তিনি; তার জন্যে বাহবা পাবেন খুব। খুলে বলছি। একটা জায়গায় তিনি লিখেছেন, “এখন থেকে ওকে তুমি করে বলবো”। নিশ্চিতভাবেই ইংরেজীতে ঠিক এমন কিছু থাকবার কথা না কিন্তু বাংলায় এমন লাইনে গিলডা কে আরও অাপন করে পাবার ইচ্ছাই প্রকাশ পেল রিগ্যানের। এমন ইমপ্রোভাইজেশান পড়তে আরাম।

লেখা আর অনুবাদের গুণে, অবশ্যই ফেলে রাখবার মতোন বই না “শক ট্রিটমেন্ট”। প্রচ্ছদের আর্টফর্মটা, মূল বই যে সময়ে লেখা সে সময়টা মনে করিয়ে দেয়।

ক্যালিফর্নিয়ার হিল ডিস্ট্রিক্টে অবস্থিত গ্লেইন ক্যাম্প একটি নিস্তরঙ্গ শহর। এখানে চুরি, ডাকাতি, খুন বা অন্যান্য অপরাধ হয় না বললেই চলে। টেরি রিগ্যান একজন টিভি মেক্যানিক। সে টিভি এবং রেডিও সেট গ্রাহকের চাহিদা মোতাবেক কাস্টমাইজড করে সরবরাহ করে থাকে। একদিন সে খবর পায় শহরে নতুন বাসিন্দা এসেছে। সেই বাসিন্দা পঙ্গু। সারাদিন তার হুইলচেয়ারে বসেই সময় পার করতে হয়। টেরি নতুন একটি টিভি সেট বিক্রির আশায় সেই নতুন বাসিন্দার বাড়িতে হানা দেয়।

পঙ্গু লোকটির নাম জ্যাক ডিলেনি। টেরি তাকে টিভি সেট দেখাতে গিয়ে জ্যাকের সুন্দরী স্ত্রী গিলডা ডিলেনির প্রেমে পড়ে যায়। তারপর টিভি সেটের বাহানায় নিয়মিত জ্যাকের বাড়িতে যাওয়া আসা শুরু করে। জ্যাক তার দুরভিসন্ধি ধরতে না পারলেও নিজের স্ত্রী সম্পর্কে টেরিকে সাবধান করে দেয়। জ্যাকের দৃষ্টিতে মেয়েমানুষ হলো বিষধর সাপের মতন। টেরি ওসবে কান দেয় না। দিন যত গড়ায়, ততই সে গিলডার প্রেমে ডুবে যেতে থাকে। গিলডা প্রথমটায় তেমন সাড়া না দিলেও একসময় সেও সাড়া দিতে শুরু করে। শুরু হয় জ্যাকের চোখ ফাঁকি দিয়ে তাদের অবৈধ মেলামেশা। এক পর্যায়ে টেরি নিজেকে আর ধরে রাখতে পারে না। গিলডাকে সে একবারে পেতে চায়। কিন্তু জ্যাক বেঁচে থাকলে যা কোনোভাবেই সম্ভব নয়। কারণ, জ্যাক গিলডাকে ডিভোর্স দিবে না। বাধ্য হয়ে টেরি জ্যাককে হত্যার পরিকল্পনা করে। একটা সময় জ্যাক মারাও যায়। জ্যাকের মৃত্যু রহস্যের তদন্ত করতে আসে ইনস্যুরেন্স কোম্পানির এজেন্ট। আপাতদৃষ্টিতে সহজ সরল একটা খুনে ঘটনা হয়ে পড়ে জটিল। আর এই জটিলতা কাটাতে হলে পড়ে যেতে হবে বইয়ের শেষ পাতা পর্যন্ত।

‘শক ট্রিটমেন্ট’ জেমস হ্যাডলি চেজের অন্যতম সেরা একটি বই। একটা খুন আর এত কম চরিত্র দিয়ে একজন লেখক পাঠককে এভাবে শ্বাসরুদ্ধকর পরিস্থিতিতে ফেলতে পারেন, তা ‘শক ট্রিটমেন্ট’ না পড়লে জানা হতো না। বইটি বাংলায় অনুবাদ করেছেন সাঈম শামস। অনুবাদক হিসেবে তাকে আমি সর্বোচ্চ নাম্বারই দিবো।

Tratamiento De Shock.- James Hadley Chase

Terry llevaba una vida tranquila comercializando y reparando televisores, hasta que un matrimonio se muda a la zona y él decide pasar a ofrecerle sus servicios. El matrimonio recién llegado se compone de un hombre mayor, confinado a una silla de ruedas y la esposa es una mujer joven y despampanante de la que Terry queda totalmente prendido y terminan teniendo un romance. La pasión desbordada de Terry lo lleva a ingeniar un plan para matar al lisiado anciano, un plan para cometer el asesinato perfecto. Pero como todos sabemos, la perfección no existe y Terry lo descubrirá pronto.

Tratamiento De Shock (Shock Treatment) se publicó originalmente en el año 1959 y fue escrita por el autor británico James Hadley Chase (1906-1985).

A Chase se le pueden achacar muchas cosas con respecto a sus libros, pero nadie puede decir que son aburridos y Tratamiento De Shock no es la excepción. En este caso tenemos a un protagonista que aunque entendemos que lo empuja, cada decisión que toma el lector va pensando “¡No podés!”, pero igual sigue leyendo y pasando páginas para saber cómo piensa salir de todos los bretes en que se va metiendo.

Sin ser uno de los mejores libros de Chase, esta historia es ideal para leer en dos sentadas y dejarse llevar, o también para saber de qué va este autor que no se ve mucho en las reseñas de Instagram, excepto en esta cuenta que se lo defiende a capa y espada (o más acorde a los personajes: a whisky y puñetazos) y del que seguramente se habrán encontrado algunos de sus libros revolviendo bateas de usados, por lo general a buen precio.

Mister Chase, a true master of crime fiction and literary word, has written quite a few books about the glorious character Steve Harmas. More precisely, there are six such works. Honestly, I am very sorry that there are so few of them and it is a shame because the author has long passed away and will never write a new, incomparable, stunning novel either about Steve Harmas, or about anything in general... It upsets. I have thought many times about what a misfortune it is that this unforgettable author wrote only about 100 books and not two hundred... Oh, how many magnificent works would have been waiting for me ahead after reading the previous hundred...
In this book, Harmas again finds himself in an extremely difficult position. Here we meet a woman, a beautiful woman, the wife of a disabled person, with whom a man falls in love, who is even ready to commit murder for the sake of this love... That's when the insurance agent, our favorite Steve Harmas, duty-bound, intervenes in all this mess.

Uno dei migliori Thriller/noir che ho mai letto finora (e dire che è stato scritto nel 1969!).
Sono rimasto piacevolmente sorpreso da come, nonostante la data di pubblicazione, questo libro sia così innovativo. Le trame di Chase sono sempre spettacolari: mi piace che ci si metta sempre nei panni del colpevole e che avvenga sempre un capovolgimento di fronte che ribalta la situazione; il protagonista, alla fine, rimane sempre a mani vuoti. Inoltre la figura di Gilda è delineata magistralmente come è splendido il finale aperto.
L'aspetto che più mi è piaciuto è il fatto che ciò che è accaduto tra Gilda e Terry, alle volte, avviene davvero (seppur non sfociando nell' omicidio!)
Peccato solo per la caratterizzazione psicologica degli altri personaggi, che poteva essere trattata meglio; per il resto (scrittura, trama, colpi di scena, scorrevolezza eccetera), è perfetto.

Shock Treatment is another classic late 50s pulp novel by James Hadley Chase, set in the time period and in small town America it follows the story of a TV repair man/TV builder who falls for a femme fatale and his attempts to implement a plan to run away with her. Unfortunately for him, not all is as it seems and his plans for the future go rather quickly awry resulting in law enforcement involvement beyond which he had planned for.

It's a quick but fun and entertaining story on par with the upper end of the quality range of the time period, much like the other Hadley Chase novels. Would recommend if you come across it.

I would have actually rated it 2/5 for the predictability of the plot (specially the short summary at the beginning of the book) . It wasn't really a suspense/thriller but it did keep me hooked.

But I liked the characterisation and the writing style. Also, a short few hours read. Hence a +1 for that.

I read this book again because it was the first ever book I read at the age of 11. It was a leftover copy from a relative who'd passed away. So it was something special then. It isn't a special book by itself now. It's another James Hadley Chase book.

This is a different setting to the other books I have read from James Hadley Chase. The court room drama added to the fun and excitement. Maddox's comment at the end "who says you can get away with murder" was the a punchline. The finest!

After reading this book I read both books by Ray Baer titled "Parables and Perils from the Pen". Although they're written as fictional, they expose the wickedness of sexual immorality plaguing society. I recommend reading all three books.
