Rate this book
Louisa Carmichael has had it. After her boss gives a less qualified co-worker the promotion he’d promised Lou, she quits. But she only makes it as far as her car before panic sets in. At twenty-eight, her entire life has revolved around her career. Who is she without it? Fortunately, Lou has the perfect excuse to avoid facing that question: a trip to France for her best friend’s wedding.

There she meets Yves Betancourt, a handsome French man who happens to be the most off-putting person she’s ever met, even if she is fascinated by his passion for his work. One desperate, lonely night in Paris, she takes him up on his invitation to meet for a drink. When he offers to be her guide as she retraces the path her grandfather took during his post-World War II tour of Normandy, Lou throws caution to the wind, falling deeply under the spell of the French countryside, food, wine—and Yves.

I'm conflicted about this book. There were elements that I really enjoyed, and ones I could definitely do without.

I loved the setting. And all the travel around France. I have a soft spot for that country anyway. It was a beautiful vacation that Lou took; I really felt like I was there at times. And Yves was great, though I did want more from him. More what, I'm not sure. But he felt a little lacking and some of the things he said did not always seem in keeping with who we were led to believe he is.

I could've done without a lot of Lou's rambling thoughts. I'm all for self-realization and working through your issues but she did it a lot. Repetitively. Every time I thought she'd taken a point to heart, she'd go over the same thing again a few chapters later. It look me out of the story a lot of the time.

Finally, the romance felt superficial to the plot. This book felt more like a tour guide of Paris and Normandy than anything else. I loved the tour but didn't connect much with the characters.

I guess I'd recommend this book if someone needed a bit of light reading but I don't know that it'd be my first choice.

Got to be tedious about half way through.

Should have been a quick, enjoyable read but I had to work to finish it. So sorry, because I love her descriptions and scenes but Lord, it went on and on to a predictable ending.

I didn't care for this book. I hate to say that, since I have really enjoyed her other books, (especially the fairy tales). It just didn't work for me. I didn't really care for Louisa's character. I didn't like the vulgarity she continually used. I find it a huge turn off when there is foul language in a book. For me, it lessens the intelligence of a person. I am sure other people will enjoy this story.

I couldn't get into it, and am probably not giving it a fair review. I am grateful for Anne giving me an ARC to read and for letting me read her other books. Try her out. Especially her books penned by Elizabeth Darcy. You will love them.
