He used Amber to sell his personal life coaching services and peddle his motivational books. She had no interest in the Dooley Foundation and the Rules of Attraction it hawked: Choose, Voice, Trust, Welcome. But then her father dies, leaving Amber and the rest of gossip hungry L.A. wondering what celebrity secrets her father kept. All Amber has to do to ensure her secrets are safe, earn her inheritance and return to her normal, paparazzi-free life is improve the mental game of the biggest bad-ass in the NBA, Evan Oliver. Too bad Amber knows nothing about basketball or life coaching. Too bad Evan Oliver is determined to do things his own way, especially when it comes to teaching Amber a new set of rules.
Prior to writing romance, award-winning, USA Today Bestseller Melinda Curtis was a junior manager for a Fortune 500 company, which meant when she flew on the private jet she was relegated to the jump seat—otherwise known as the potty. After grabbing her pen (and a parachute) she made the jump to full-time writer. Between writing sweet romance and sweet romantic comedy, Melinda finds time to bond with her husband over home remodeling projects. She recently came to grips with the fact that she’s an empty nester and a grandma, concepts easier to grasp than jet-setting on a potty.

Amber Rule just inherited her father’s famous life-coaching business: The Dooley Foundation. To some this may seem like a dream come true but to Amber who was used by her father to make his success it’s a nightmare. Amber’s life growing up included being forced into the spotlight by her father’s how-to videos. For the past few years Amber has enjoyed living a quiet life in Pasadena. That’s all over when she is thrust back into the limelight as she tries to turn an egotistical basketball star into a team player.
Basketball player Evan Oliver knows he’s a star and thinks everyone else does too. When the team owner insists he work with a life coach he hatches a plan to seduce his life coach so she gets fired.
Amber and Evan are in for the ride of their lives as business and pleasure mix.
Amber Rules is a fun, flirty romance that will leave you all smiles. Amber is a woman whose self-esteem has been battered and bruised. She would rather avoid the problems in front of her and hide in her safe home in Pasadena but her father has another plan for his daughter. I found Amber to be relatable and extremely likeable. I felt the pain and shame that she holds inside. Evan comes off as a total egotistical punk out for himself. It’s only when we get a glimpse into his past and see what brought him to this point that we find the tortured hero underneath.
Amber and Evan sizzle together from their first awkwardly funny meeting to their blazing dance these two are overflowing with sex appeal. Amber Rules is an all around fantastic story! I found myself just as interested in the separate lives of Amber and Evan as I was about their lives together. I liked the secondary characters and I’m anxious to read about them in the future. Amber Rules is an uplifting and heartwarming story!
I totally loved this story. Right from the start this story grabbed my attention. I loved all the characters in this story and cannot wait to find out what happens to them in later books. I was afraid this book would be all about basketball and nothing else since Evan is a basketball player but it was beautifully written within the story. I found myself cheering him on in games especially the last one. And I loved Ren. Amber is an amazing character as well. To overcome all her issues from the past and present and still be fierce, fun, and sexy is amazing.
This is the first book in The Hollywood Rules Series by Mel Curtis.
Amber Rule knows nothing about her father's business except that he had used her in motivational videos when she was younger and needed to lose weight and that now she receives royalty checks on a monthly basis.
She now has to work as the company's CEO for a year in order to receive money from her father's estate when she knows absolutely nothing about how to help people with their life choices especially when one of the major clients is a basketball player. How the heck is she supposed to help him on and off the court when she doesn't even realize that basketball doesn't even have touchdowns?
Her siblings each were given responsibilities within the company for the next 12 months also. Each struggling with what their father expects from them with absolutely no direction coming from him.
I'm looking forward to finding out if each Rule can find his/her way in the company in spite of the fact that their father leaving very little to guide them along the way.
I was given an ARC for an honest review. Any and all conclusions are mine and mine alone.
This is a story that grabs you from the start holding your attention with wonderful lovable characters I really enjoyed the humor and the romance which you get totally invested in. On her father’s death Amber finds herself running his business that she knows nothing about. From a young age she was put in the limelight which she hated. Buying a nice home in a nice quite place was just the ticket for until his death now she is back in the limelight with coaching an uncooperative basketball player who has her attention in more ways than one.
This was wonderfully written with wonderful characters. I enjoyed that their romance builds up. Watching Amber get her self-esteem back was a pleasure. Evan was a little cocky at first than you have a look at his past you come to understand him and fall in love with him. This is a story that pulls at your heart from start to finish giving you lots of smiles as you follow their past into their future you feel the pain each went through. You get to watch their relationship bloom as it warms your heart. I really enjoyed this well written story inside a story. It was a book I could not put down read it at one setting. ********************

Amber resented that her father used her to promote his business. The paparazzi made her life unbearable. Amber is a very private person. She hides herself and fades into the background. Suddenly her father's death puts her back in the spotlight. To save the Dooley Foundation, she has to become the life coach to Evan Oliver, NBA bad boy. Can she do it? I liked Amber. She smart, caring and determined to do the impossible. Evan is carrying lots of emotional baggage. He fights authority. He's not going to let this beautiful woman tell him what to do. Unfortunately their attraction gets in the way. I love their battle of wills. Mel Curtis brings some heat and humor to this romance. It's a wild ride. The characters pulled me in. I wanted them to get their HEA. Hollywood makes the perfect background for this love story. Amber definitely rules. I cheered as she overcame her fears and came into her own. Mel Curtis writes romance with flair and humor. I received a copy in exchange for an honest and unscripted review.

When Amber Rule's father dies she is left with the reading of his will which states that she must bring in money to her father's business if she is able to get any money from the will, and she is also named CEO.
Evan Oliver is the NBA bad boy, and Amber`s new client. She has to make Evan believe in "The Rules" and turn his game around if she has any chance of obtaining her inheritance.
Amber has issues with attachment and being seen as a success in her dad's business but she views herself as somewhat as a failure, especially in the area of love. Kent, her ex-boyfriend, gave a sex tape of her to the press and she has a hard time living it down.
Will Amber give bad boy Evan a chance at love or will her rejection of him drive him farther down his downward spiral?
I read Amber Rules as part of a review team. Mel Curtis is a new to me author and I thoroughly enjoyed this book. At the reading of her father's will, Amber Rule is tasked with saving his business if she wants to receive any of her inheritance. Having been estranged from her father for many years, she gets to work trying to figure out how his business was run. Its a mystery to solve and a project to get thru so she can get back to her life. But, life laughs and adventures abound as she tries to make it all work. A great read.
Another great book! This book has humor and sweet romance. I was pulled in from the start. After Amber's father dies, Amber is thrown back into the lime light and takes over her father's life coaching business. Amber's first client is Evan. Evan is arrogant and cocky but has his own issues. Amber and Evan have a strong attraction when they first meet and sparks fly. Can Amber help Evan? Will Amber get back her confidence? You will love the characters. I enjoyed this story. Received copy for honest review.
This was a great fast-paced story. The characters were great and really worked well together. Throwing a life coach who doesn't want to be a life coach with an NBA player needing coaching who doesn't want coaching, and adding in a gossip columnist and drama filled siblings is a great recipe for excitement. I really enjoyed how Amber grew and learned about herself and her father throughout the story. I'm really looking forward to reading Blue's story as well.
No one wants their life to be controlled by their father, much less after he has died. Yet that is the situation that Amber and her two half-siblings are in after Dooley Rule, self help guru to the famous, find themselves in. I really like how Amber got out there and started applying the Rules to her life. The action and the sparks between Amber and Evan kept the story interesting.
Amber Rules, Book 1 in the Hollywood Rules series, is a hot read with sass and sizzle! Mel Curtis combines her knowledge of basketball with her humor and wit in this entertaining tale. Full of quips and quirks from a colorful cast of characters, Amber Rules will delight fans of Hollywood gossip and reality TV!
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author. All thoughts expressed are my own and no monetary compensation was received.
Excellent read. An amazing mixture of humor and romance. After her fathers death, Amber Rules is plunged into the family life coaching business as CEO. Just a little problem though. She doesn't know anything about life coaching or business!! Add in having to coach a sexy, uncooperative basketball player and you have one hilarious story. The fact that Amber and Evan have a intense attraction and you have one crazy story. This is a good one. I highly recommend it.
4 stars I purchased a copy of the full length novel Breaking The Rules book 1 : Playing For Love by Mel Curtis and this review was given freely. A novel set in LA which features the superficial life of LA, The Rules life coaching business, and The Flash basketball team. When Amber's father dies, she and her siblings must run the LA based life coaching business her father started which opens her up to heartache and the paparazzi but also brings her love.
What a great read. Wish I'd read them in order...still in love with Blue, but I love seeing the family interactions, the different personalities and the fun. I can't wait for Gemma's story...she's a hoot and I can only imagine who she'll end up with. Great job, sure hoping there are more "Rules" to come out of hiding.
Amazon deleted this from my Kindle somehow, but I couldn't forget it. It was funny and unpredictable with a likeable heroine whose first instinct is to look after others, despite a crazy LA upbringing with a self-help guru. I ended up searching Google until I found it again. Maybe not the most memorable title, but well worth the hunt!
Great book! I was not excited to read it at first. It came in a boxed set so I felt I should read it; I was pleasantly surprised. The more I read, the more I wanted to read! It was a sizzler also and that made the book even better! I did not want the book to end. Can't wait to read the next book in the series.
'Amber Rules' by Mel Curtis is book 1 of The Hollywood Rules. I loved Amber's story! This book is a great read. I'm looking forward to seeing what happens next in The Hollywood Rules series with book 2 'Blue Rules'. This is a great series!
I LOVE this book!!!!! I literally could not stop reading it!!! No spoilers but Amber Rules is possibly every insecure girl's hero! Who doesn't like a story with the possibility of overcoming your shortfalls?!
Part of the swoon bundle. Ends at 85%. Started out as a five but ended as a 4. There's so much to like about this book. Amber, Blue, Cora, Dooley & Evan. Basketball, family, Hollywood. Lots of humor especially at the begining.
What a unique and fun character Amber is. It was interesting to read about her background with her father and see what shaped her personality. Rule is the last person she should be attracted to but the force is too strong.
It really took a lot for me to stay focused on this book. I felt it was all over the place and well just didn't flow or seem to hold any real ummmph! Very flat book for me.
