Because sometimes you have to fight fire with hellfire, there's Caine Deathwalker: raised as a demon, armed like a gun merchant, and fuelled by booze. Nice is a dirty word and killing is what he does best. Make a contract with hell, and he could be on your side, God help you. Caine signs onto guarding the beautiful daughter of a leading Japanese industrialist. Protecting is harder than indiscriminate murder and mayhem, but gold is gold, and the prize of a mystic demon sword is dangled over his head as added incentive. Haruka will make an interesting bonus if he can get her out of her kimono-and the damn living zombies will leave them alone long enough for him to bang her. A powerful succubus is playing cat to Caine's mouse, but he has a cat of his own; a black leopard spirit beast from the Amazon jungle that's taken a liking to him-and his booze. And then there's his "father," an ancient Atlantean demon with a code of honor. Formidable back-up, but Caine senses a greater threat lurking in the shadows, something primal, hungry, and possibly more evil than himself. He shakes his head. Nah, couldn't be. This book is intended for mature audiences.
Born in Brazil on Lagoa (Witches Island), he came to the United States in his early teens. As a writer, he focuses on the paranormal and occult, adding a weird spin all his own to the Urban Dark Fantasy genre.
I just really enjoy writing and the urban dark fantasy genre lets me come up with some great stories.
Five stars for series starter. Four stars for storyline. One star for misogyny.
Let's start with the good! Caine Deathwalker is a human who wields dragon magic through a collection of intricate dragon blood tattoos all over his lovely body. Adopted by a demon clan as a child, and raised by the last Atlantean demon he calls Old Man, Caine has grown into the Alpha and sexual dynamo of the Los Angeles paranormals. He is also his clans demon for hire.
Hiro Kirishima has a problem. His grandfather made a deal with a succubus for financial gain, all it cost him was one of his great grandkids. But Hiro is not willing to give away his only daughter Haruka so he hires Caine to protect her.
If this were PNR this story would then be pared down to a romance between Caine and Haruka against a bad guy. But this isn't PNR, this is fantasy and as such we have an expansive cast with multiple friends and villains. Haruka is hardly in the story at all. This world has demons, vampires, werewolves, dragons, warlocks, nephilim, dhampyr, succubi, fey, goddesses, spirit animals, gargoyles, yakuza, and slayers. Yes, it's a lot, but it doesn't all come at you at once. Also, it's all from Caine's point of view so you don't get turned around from POV jumps.
There are some powerful women in this world and I thought I should touch upon that. Gloria is a bar owner and ancient vampire who always keeps her head. "Mad, happy, sad, pissed beyond sanity, her expression tended not to change. I liked that about her, even if it creeps me out at times."
Izumi, and especially her mother Kellyn, were my favorites. "The girl turned the full force of those icy, electric eyes on me, deadening my muscles like a killing frost."
Then there is the goddess Red Lady, with whom you should never mess! "Through gritted teeth, she said, “Keep that up and I will never let you die—no matter how loudly you beg.” A real bitch. Just my kind of woman." Angie, Leona, Sara, and a few others should be mentioned but I liked them less, lol.
Now for the bad. There is a difference between being kind of a dick, a man's man, a ladies man, and a misogynist. It's not really a fine line, it's a solid stripe. Caine is a misogynist.
"I had to yell over the room full of hysterically crying women, who doubtless realized that without the men, they’d have to pay their own checks. Perhaps it was mean-spirited for me to think so, but I was demon raised. Men existed to pay for my services. Women existed to service me in bed."
"someone called the cops on me, claiming I was killing a whore. Not that I have a problem with that; whores aren’t really people. Since they don’t have souls, they can’t even make a binding contract with a demon."
"Briefly, I indulged a fantasy where I killed every male in the room, stripped the girl, and spanked her into submission."
This takes a lot away from the story, but I don't want to end on a bad note. There is an irreverent humor to this book that reminds me of Gene Doucette's Immortal. I'll leave you with a few fun quotes.
"He thought my cursing a sign of poor upbringing, and took it personally being the up-bringer."
"Booze often plays a bigger role in my decisions than even I like to admit."
"He zipped up slowly, carefully, trying to imply his size was so monstrous he had to be extra careful. I made a mental note to remember that trick."
"All my treasures were here, safe from the I.R.S. and other demonic forces."
My favorite: “I don’t care. I want what I want, and that sack of shit was in my way.” Kellyn graced her daughter with an approving look. “Spoken like a pure-blood fey.”
Different from other urban fantasy books doesn't even cover this masterpiece! 24/7 awesome action and nonstop humor aplenty,oh and let's not forget the fact that this is book breaks all those cliches stuck to every other Urban Fantasy book ever! No altruistic protagonist(he's a straight up villain!), not a detective or P.I. (assassin, contractor for a DEMON CLAN!), definitely not a weakling that gets beat up in every single fight(shoot, kill, stab, burn first ask questions later). All in all Caine Deathwalker is a pure badass and this book along with the entire series ruined me for all other UF books cause its so much fun and enjoyable to read(If I have to spell it out for you: I don't like human protagonist a.k.a. wusses that bitch all the time).
So yeah, If you want a fun book with a womanizing, badass, take no prisoners and blow shit up with a side of sneaky you're gonna love Red Moon Demon along with all the other books in the series!
Uggh. The concept is really interesting and fairly unique the writing comes across like a teenager trying to tell us how cool his video game character is. I hate to bash anyone who creates but the writing isn't very good but the imagination behind it really is. If you want something different this is it but know the trip will be a bit painful.
I had a hard time deciding if I should give this 3 stars and then go down to 2.5 or 2 stars and go up to 2.5 . The fact that I found myself skimming through a lot toward the end decided it for me. This was a book full of action but very low on the story. There was magic everywhere (which I love) with absolutely no explanation of how it worked or its limits (which I hate). The main character was supposed to be some kind of badass (which he was) but everything he did was over the top. There were a lot of things that did not make sense. Caine Deathwalker was the adopted son of a Demon lord which begged the question, why did his adopted father need him to perform the job given to him instead of doing it himself? There were also some indications that Caine's adopted father hasn't told him the truth about his parents. Caine gets up set and says he is going to have words with the Old Man, but never actually does. His functional alcoholism was over the top as well. Overall there were a lot of interesting ideas that could have been explored, but the author spent too much time dealing with action and not nearly enough time dealing with the actual story. No plan to read the next book.
Looking for a book where the main lead is a bad ass? This is your book. Usually in most Urban Fic that I've read it takes a few books for the MC to develop his powers, or gain experience themselves so by the end they are a power in their own right and one BAMF.
Not in this case, Caine is one guy who do not mess with. Few chapters in it's already established that he owns LA - do not F with his city or he will kill you. And your family.
This book had great action scenes, and I like the variety of paranormals in it. Dragons, weres, necros, mages, fae, etc. Most are in it and all are well written.
Only downsides I found were the occasional spelling error, missing " ", and the constant inner dialogue where the MC tells us how BAMF he is. After a few chapters we know he's basically someone who thinks very highly of himself, but he constantly retells us how much of a bad ass he is. I didn't mind it, but found it repetitive.
Great action read though, starting the 2nd book now.
The underlying story was quite good and would have registered 4 stars for me - supposedly human child raised by demons, given dragon magic and being the clan enforcer/demon for hire given a job to break a family deal with a succubus.
But, it was made incredibly difficult to read care of the atrocious editing. Bad spelling and grammar, random punctuation and sections of text seemingly removed or repeated - at one point, around half a chapter is re-inserted into the last paragraph.
So, 1 star docked for the editing and another for the extreme misogyny of the lead character and it feeling like he’s been written by a teenager trying to prove how ‘bad ass’ he is. That takes it down to 2 overall from me.
I bought part 2 as part of a Kindle deal so will give it a go, but if the above issues are still present, I can’t see me progressing further with the series.
Interesting but a little bit hectic, there are just to many thing happening just one after the other, it could use some calm parts to give the reader the chance to really get behind what is happening, the way it is here it seems a little unrealistic with just action 24/7. But non the less a good book
Caine deathwalker !! One of the most Kickass character I have read off till date. This fast paced novel is just what i needed !! Hope to read all future novels with this character..
If a bit more violent urban fantasy is your thing, then this is a pretty solid choice, with some pretty big flaws (which can be overlooked depending on what you like). Seems from the first book, as if the whole thing has a harem twist to it.
Solid story that does not really feel like the prologue it is. It lacks some focus at times, but the pacing is alright overall.
The grammar/spelling and structure are alright overall, but when the grammar or structure errors happen they are pretty major (like 3 pages existing 2 times or parts of sentences missing). The even more noticable things are, e.g. him adressing an unknown person who wasnt introduced by name.
The real dealmaker/breaker is the main character. Oh boy he is a piece of work. Think Deadpool, only a bit less funny and more immature asshole (which makes sense plotwise) with a really big ego. He is a bit of a badass though (a bit overdone at times, but still not quite the "i am edgy and so awesome"-style variety),his powers (and unknowns) are quite interesting and his asshole nature becomes less pronounced over the course of the book.
Same thing with his treatment of his/other women, which is nice, because eye-candy only is boring and some of the female characters get quite interesting. The rest of the cast ranges from interesting, like the old man, to quite bland cardboard cutouts and is overall rather average (although some have a lot of potential). Some feel, like they should have come in the next or another book, simply because they did not make much of an appearence despite their potential.
Overall a nice read with a few big flaws, but a good potential and enjoyable story.
OK! The story was great..I guess, but the MC fucked it up , he is a puedo-badass who goes around saying he had done this , done that but he is not as strong as he think he is or pretends to be . He just got a nice plot armour , he gets his ass kicked but somehow at the end things works out . He is strong but not as strong as his old man or Salem the warlock or Sarah or the succubus or red fang the dragon or izumi's mom....... wait that's like quater of the cast , these people don't go around telling everyone that it's his/her city . A real badass keeps their mouth shut ,their actions speaks fucking louder. He is just a horny asshole instead of a cold bastard which he should have been . His judgement is always clouded with how hot a woman is but he pretends that he cares about nothing...... delusional hypocrite.
If you ove the MC that is an anti hero, well my friend....this book is for you! From beginning to end , this author takes you from one action packed sequence to the next. The magic system in use is one that uses exchange so it's not just spam cast. The combat could be bloodied but it will do. I'm happy this isn't strewn with fantasy random sex scenes. It's a great book and ill continue on to book 2
This book was tough. On one hand I didn't know what I was reading because the editing was all over the place and the story wasn't making much sense at all in the beginning. I thought about just leaving this book but the underlying premise was too good and different from what typical stories are so I decided to keep going.
I am glad that i did because this just became my favourite new series!
This books was a whole vibe for me i enjoyed....caine deathwalker exactly what i wanted in dark urban fantasy But if you are easily offended this book aint for you
I usually wait till I'm a couple of books into the series to recommend it and that's why I'm writing this review for the first book even though I just finished the 4th book.
I have seen a lot of growth over the last 4 books both with respect to the author's writing style and the protagonist's thought process.
The first few books had a lot of spelling mistakes and other errors that really put you off sometimes, but the foundations of the story are very well developed. As an author writing in a foreign language, I really commend this growth, but as a reader, I really understand how frustrating and disappointing it can be sometimes.
There are definitely quite a few errors in this book but it does not make it unreadable as you can simply predict what the author meant to write, so I would really advise everyone to move forward with an open mind and focus more on the story and allow the author a little leeway in this matter. Fair warning, even though the errors in the writing do significantly reduce, they are still a few occurrences of this nature in future books.
I will not summarize the story as you will find that anywhere, but let me tell you a couple of things I liked about the way it was written.
I really like how the story is not one-dimensional even though it is written in a way that always celebrates the strength of the MC. A lot of things are happening simultaneously the same way as they were in Dresden files or similar such series, which keep the book moving at a really high pace and expresses upon the reader the criticality of the various issues that are being handled by the MC currently. Another thing I liked is the constant upgrades being added to the MC's arsenal. I feel like this really increases newer ways to resolve issues and makes for interesting action sequences.
It is definitely designed for those who like their MC strong, rich, resourceful and ever-powerful with a complete disregard for everything and everyone around him and considers his entire environment as tools for him to achieve his goals.
Despite all that, I did come across a lot of misogyny in the books and I read quite a few reviews where a lot of readers have left the series just because of that one aspect. Despite the fact that I completely disagree with that particular component I feel like the author justifies this many times by specifically mentioning in the book that he is a demon raised child and they were raised to behave this way and this adds an element of imperfection to his character which I'm actually for because I feel like there is definitely a lot of character personality growth that can come from these kinds of negative traits. Having a perfect MC after a while does get boring and super one-dimensional.
I surely wouldn't call it a must-read but it's a good read for fantasy readers who like strong MCs. Anyone who watched the Japanese anime "That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime" and loved it or read the first 3 books of the demon accords series and loved it, will definitely like this series.
This is an interesting entry in the 'Urban Fantasy' category. The main character is male, linked to a Demon clan, and acts the part of a human/demon hybrid. There is no altruism or greater good in this book!
The setting is pretty vivid, the characters stand out, and the mythology seems fairly straightforward. That said, some of the things 'explained' in the mythology could use more details and at least a stab at making things reconcile to how normal fantasy elements work. I enjoy when it when an author makes common mythology his own but there seems no common thread on what is the same as other fantasy books and what is changed.
Finally, this is a book 1 and I expect some need for proofreading editing. This book could use a solid once over to polish it up. Ill give book 2 a try and see if I continue on with the series.
This is just a fun action packed book, deals with a 1/2 demon (or something ) with an old demon from Atlantis who has grown him up and has him working to keep LA ...well a mess. This novel is a easy read that has some fantastic fight's, some original ideas, and plays with the old, all with the idea of just enjoying reading about a day in the life of a ... well whatever our main character is. There is a deeper sub-plot but it really does not play much with getting in the way of another fight, a smart ass remark or a drink. There are a few remarks that are sexually based (demon) that does not go too far pg -13 now days at best, The book really is all about the magic and fighting and new and bigger bad -ass on the next street. Fun read
OK, let start with the bad: editing was no where to be found (personally as long as I can follow a storey I do not care but if your a grimmer Nazi do not read it it will drive you mad). the storey just kind of took the long way round (like real life but to many tangents for four stars).
now for the good, lots of action, and a cool world is being set up, hope the second book takes advantage of it.
And to be honest, not really impressed with the boozing womanizing lead character its been done to death, but the bad boy with the heart of gold (when it suites him) is on the menus once again.
It was a fun read and I did kill it in less then 24 hours so its definitely worth checking out!
There's an interesting story in here somewhere. A character with almost no redeeming features. In fact Caine Deathwalker is a demon by choice. An assassin for hire. All he cares about are sex and booze. Oh and killing. This is a set up novel. Introducing us to his world. And other dimensions. And in this it gets lost. Too much going on at once. I enjoyed the book. But Blayde should have concentrated on one story. The setup could have been introduced across 3 books. Enjoyable but messy.
I was surprised by this book because on one hand I hated the main character. The character is so over the top with how badass he thinks he is and how great and sexually irresistible he is. But when I just ignored that aspect I liked the book
-***** minor spoilers*********
Now the question I have is why did he blame Izumi for the wolves coming to la, and how did Sophia get mixed up with the succubus
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Great character, not politically correct at all which makes it so much better. The main character loves killing things which need killing , beating the crap out of those standing in the way and lots of booze and sex. He gets the job done in his own way and his lack of giving a damn makes this a great series.
the book itself would have gotten weak 4 stars compared to the Dresden or Verus(most books good 4 stars) series but the multitude of spelling errors and the occasional grammar mistake drag it a down to 3 stars. This of course can be forgiven since it seems to be self published but is expected to to remedy itself in future books.
This series is pretty awesome. I think I can describe it best by saying it's a combination of Hellequin and Demon Accords. The MC is definitely an anti-hero and there can be moments where he is very gritty.
