Breeds #19.5

The Devil's Due

Rate this book
Print version in Enthralled anthology.

An Irish lass only now realizing her breed genetics now also carries the proof of a little known breed phenomena, called ‘genetic flaming’. A fever that literally pulls recessed breed genetics from hiding.

She’s discovered in the worse of places, in Europe, where breeds are now required to submit to testing facilities or forced to those facilities once found. But breeds rarely leave the same way they enter.

If Kathleen ‘Katy’ O’Sullivan doesn’t find a miracle than no one can save her, even her adored Da, Barrett O’ Sullivan. Northern Ireland’s Chief Constable can save her from the fate her country would order her to.

Rescue comes in the form of the famed, Devil Black, a former Breed Rogue Executioner and now, her mate.

Breeds 28
Wolf Breeds 10
Featured Couple: Devil Black (Wolf) & Kathleen ‘Katy’ O’Sullivan (Wolf)

Although this is a short novella it is well packed with a lot of details (really important for future books) and facts about Breeds:

FACTS ABOUT BREEDS
1. Breeds in Europe do NOT have a good life. Once they are discovered, they return willingly/forced to research facilities.
2. Some Breeds from Europe are trying very hard to escape in USA where the situation for Breeds is more tolerable and dignified.
3. The ‘genetic flaming’ is a fever that literally pulls recessed breed genetics from hiding.
4. We learn the existence of Nephilim Breeds who are spoken of with the same fear as vampires and werewolves. The results of experiments that scientists lost control of. Their genetics had been fully progressed past the animal state.
I suppose Winged Breeds and Nephilim Breeds will need further exploration in future books.

FACTS ABOUT THE MAIN STORY LINE AND THE MAIN CHARACTERS
1. Someone is still following Cassie. And she knows it. Could he be her potential mate?
2. Reever Ranch. A lot of things will happen in this ranch in the next books.
3. New important characters are added to the mix: Lobo Reever (the owner of the ranch and a lone wolf) and Jessica, his adopted daughter.
4. Graeme. Who the hell was Graeme? He works in the ranch for only a few months, but he is very loyal to Lobo. Is he a Bengal Breed or a Lion Breed? It appears that he is very good in terrorizing prisoners, because he had experience in being tortured.

THE LOVE STORY OF THIS BOOK
Kathleen ‘Katy’ O’Sullivan escapes Europe and finds refuge in Reever Ranch. She is the best friend of Jessica (Lobo’s adopted daughter).
Devil Black is the executioner of Breed Rogues. He is the last face they see before they die. But he will help terrified Katy to escape.
Katy has been hiding all her life. She learns what it means to be a Breed when she feels the mating heat with Devil.
The story is short, so you will not find much depth in the characters. But it is definitely a hot, sexy story like most of the Breeds’ stories.

A recessive Wolf Breed is revealed and she has to hide from almost everyone. Those against the Breeds want her dissected and checked since she passed all the tests which were supposed to show she is a Breed. None of those tests were successful until the fever hit and she found out she is, after all, not human. Those who are not against the Breeds see the benefits of having her. This is a standard Breed story minus the arguing common to other Breed stories.

I was more interested in the parts of the story which don't have anything to do with the two main characters. The first is Cassie's shadow (the guy is still following her). The second is the Bengal with an APB on him (not a new character; they have been hunting him in the last few books).

Also in Enthralled.

The Devil’s Dueis book 28 in the Breeds series, by Lora Leigh .
This is a short Breed book with a lot of convoluted plots, genetic manipulations, and Steamy Scenes as only Lora Leigh can do.

The book seems to contain preludes to other books with so many characters being introduced.

I did like Katie and Devil bonding. :P

As I said in my status update, there is really only one reason people have such an addiction to The New Breed series for 27 books. That's the sex. There is nothing hotter than sex written by Lora Leigh. No one comes close to her ability to make you read 30 solid minutes of one sex scene. It's the reason she almost always gets a 4 or 5 star rating from me. If you are a breed addict, this can be found in Audible form and is well worth listening to. For those not familiar with the New Breed series, you have no idea what you are missing.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

I have been reading this series for awhile now. There are books that I love and ones I could have skipped. The stories are all connected and hints/clues are peppered through everything, so you really do have to read the whole series in order.

Every time it comes to a novella, I feel rushed. There is so much more that could be in the stories. I really liked Katie and yummy Devil. This book could have been so much more. Plenty of other hints dropped about future books, we will see if they are really followed through on or dropped. That is a big issue I have with the series Ms Leigh is heavy in the foreshadowing but very light on the follow through. It is always something that leaves me cold.

I listened to the audiobook narrated by Brianna Bronte, who is wonderful! She does a fabulous job with the action of the story, instilling just the right amount of energy. Add on the task of some Irish accents, which she does a great job of performing while keeping them distinct and consistent. She did such a great job on the read that she kept me listening even when I was feeling let down by the story. I am definitely going to look for more of her work!

As far as this series goes, I am invested, so I will probably keep reading. I won't be rushing to buy the next book on release day, but I will get around to it, eventually. Sadly this is a series I used to love, but the issues I outlined are just taking their tole.

Part of anthology Enthralled

For a Breed book, the "romance" was watered down, which I actually enjoyed. The series got to the point where it was a sexual hunger that almost hurt and the sex didn't seem to feel any better, especially for the women. This one was a nice story about a Breed that thought he'd never find love and the woman that was rejected when her DNA was found out. Good story. 3-1/2 stars.

I had to reread the beginning a couple of times to catch who was who....it was a bit confusing. LL brought in an Irish contingency, which was okay. The only big thing was at the end Gideon realizes who his mate is. It did like that Katie didn't go back and forth with her emotions on the mating thing.

I loved the characters, but the set up was confusing and with so much time spent with the other characters there was less time for character development. However, I loved Devil and Kate.

SSDD... Same $h1t, different day. It's getting to the point in these shorts that there is little story and the same tired sex scenes. This is the last one I'll read. I'm on to Rule Breaker later this month and I can only hope with all my might that there's a story in there because I'm sick to death of the same sex scenes over and over and over. I loved the first dozen or so books but now the sex make me cringe, and the stories grow weak and are poorly edited.

I did not/could not finish this one. Since I'm doing the 2014 reading challenge, I listed the finished date as the last day of 2013 since I DNF'd this one.

Previous review missing but no hardship to reread this book.
Not really much time spent with Devil and Kate. No real build up to a mating, just knowledge, heat and acting on it once these two get in touching distance.
Love the look we get at what is happening in Europe to the breeds and how the laws pertain and differs to the American breeds.
A bit short to really do this justice but do love all the bits of information secreted in this story. Having just reread Cross Breed for the second time I can really appreciate how Ms Leigh has tied in and continues to bring this series together in such a clever and intriguing way.

The beginning of this book is very confusing and I think it is because there is a typo with the first two characters introduced names. I read the prologue twice every time trying to figure out the names and which character is the father of which girl. One girl is the heroine of this book the other becomes a minor character in the next couple of books and is implied to be important in an upcoming story. Only two stars because of the confusion, the quickness of the story, the shortness of the story, and the changing personality of the heroine and hero.

Found this book to be short and sweet. I entirely loved that Katie did not resist the mating at any time, she embraced her attraction to Devil from the start and that was different to most of the females who have to fight through emotional barriers. Devil also embraced his attraction to her and once realising she was his mate he did not pull back.

I am very curious to find out more about Khileen and cant wait til we get more information on her!

haven't read these books in forever but they are definitely favourites and so it begins.
back to the start of this very clever series. It is heavy on the erotica and very graphic so definitely not for everyone but the emotions and the storylines are truly beautiful and thrilling to read. lots of martyrs and lots of misunderstandings but it is a great series and i personally love the writing style

This boxset is the most sensual I've read! I swear I listened to each book one after the other 9 hours or more on each audio and i am so sad im done! The characters aren't shifters but breeds meaning they have the animal DNA and their best parts but can't shift. Their mates are beautiful women and men for the female breeds. They were made in labs abused but got out and are trying to help jonas child. My favorite is the half breed Cassius book

Very happy Amber's story isn't in this one. I'm confused about Graeme. When did he get his sanity back all of a sudden? This seems outside the timeline. I'm not pleased. Do authors think people won't notice? That's the reason for the deduction of stars.

For a novella, this was really good. Not a chapter's worth of erotica though I know these books are heavy on it. It seems cut and paste at 28 books in.

Short, fast breed mating novella. Seems to be prepping us for future stories, background on other characters. The story itself was not as in depth as I like my Breed stories
