I love. Graham Masterton. This series is a Supernatural thriller that is so creepy! Not for the faint of the heart but a fantastic read if you love intense suspense. It scared me in some parts which surprised.

Απολαυστικός Masterton!
Είναι το δεύτερο βιβλίο στο οποίο πρωταγωνιστεί η Katie Maguire, μετά την “Τρομερή Ομορφιά” του 2003. Οι ιστορίες δεν έχουν σχέση μεταξύ τους, πέρα της εξέλιξης της προσωπικής ζωής της Katie.
Καταρχάς να υποσημειώσω για το ελληνικό κοινό ότι ο συγγραφέας τα τελευταία χρόνια έχει ξεφύγει από τον υπερφυσικό τρόμο, με τον οποίο τον γνωρίσαμε. Τα μεταγενέστερα βιβλία του (όσα έχω διαβάσει) είναι αστυνομικά. Ωστόσο, διακατέχονται από σκληρές σκηνές βίας, φροντίζοντας έτσι να κρατάνε ζωντανή και τη συγγραφική του ταυτότητα. Θεωρώ όμως ότι δεν γράφει έτσι για να αποδείξει κάτι τέτοιο. Είναι τέτοιες οι ιστορίες του, τέτοιοι οι άνθρωποι για τους οποίους μας μιλάει, που οποιαδήποτε “έκπτωση βίας” στις σκηνές θα ήταν καταστροφική.
Η Ιρλανδή αστυνόμος αυτή τη φορά θα βρεθεί αντιμέτωπη με μια σειρά ακραίων δολοφονιών ιερέων. Καθένας τους που εντοπίζεται είναι βάναυσα χτυπημένος και ευνουχισμένος. Όπως αναφέρεται και στο οπισθόφυλλο, οι έρευνές της θα τη φέρουν μπροστά σε μια φρικτή συγκάλυψη που σχετίζεται με ένα ορφανοτροφείο, το οποίο με τη σειρά του σχετίζεται με την Καθολική επισκοπή. Το αποτέλεσμα είναι το αναμενόμενο, αφού, υπό τον φόβο της οργής που θα μπορούσε να προκαλέσει στην ιεραρχία της εκκλησίας, θα ξεκινήσει για τον εντοπισμό του δολοφόνου σχεδόν ολομόναχη, ενώ απέναντί της θα βρει και ανθρώπους που το μόνο που τους νοιάζει είναι να παραμείνουν τα μυστικά αυτά θαμμένα.
Αν και η ιστορία εξελίσσεται στο Κορκ της Ιρλανδίας, όλα τα παραπάνω μοιάζουν οικεία για τον μέσο πολίτη κάθε πόλης και χώρας, αφού λίγο-πολύ έχουμε ακούσει όλοι για τέτοιες ιστορίες συγκάλυψης στους κύκλους της εκκλησίας. Το στοιχείο αυτό λειτουργεί σαφώς υπέρ του συγγραφέα, αφού μας κάνει εύκολα θεατές της ιστορίας του. Το ίδιο καλά λειτουργεί και η αστυνομική της δομή, αφού ο αναγνώστης μπαίνει στο γνωστό μονοπάτι της σταδιακής εξερεύνησης της αλήθειας. Και η πρωταγωνίστρια είναι μια ευχάριστη πινελιά στον καμβά του, μιας και είναι αρκετά “ανθρώπινη” και προσιτή. Το φύλο της είναι έξυπνη και ενδιαφέρουσα επιλογή, αφού συχνά-πυκνά γίνεται θέμα συζήτησης από τους ίδιους τους χαρακτήρες του βιβλίου, καθώς είναι η πρώτη γυναίκα στον βαθμό του αστυνόμου στο Κορκ. Η πόλη εξάλλου είναι πολύ μεγάλη για τα δεδομένα της Ιρλανδίας, (120000 κάτοικοι, δεύτερη μετά το Δουβλίνο).
Βρήκα επίσης ενδιαφέρουσα και την εξέλιξη της προσωπικής της ζωής. Έχουν αλλάξει –αναμενόμενα– διάφορα σε σχέση με το πρώτο βιβλίο (δεν αναφέρω περισσότερα για να αποφύγω ένα μικρό σπόιλερ), αλλά τώρα θα πρέπει να βρεθεί αντιμέτωπη και με ένα σταυροδρόμι που είναι μεγάλος βραχνάς για κάθε γυναίκα που το συναντά: καριέρα ή προσωπική ζωή. Ο συγγραφέας σίγουρα θα βρει (γυναικείο) κοινό που θα ταυτιστεί.
Πηγαίνοντας στα αρνητικά του βιβλίου τώρα, το μεγαλύτερο που καταλογίστηκε στον συγγραφέα δεν θα απασχολήσει καθόλου τους αναγνώστες της ελληνικής έκδοσης, αφού αφορά την έντονη χρήση της Ιρλανδικής «σλάνγκ» γλώσσας. Μιλώντας προσωπικά πάντως, να πω ότι κάτι τέτοιο δεν είναι θέμα για μένα ούτε στην αγγλική έκδοση. Στο Κορκ βρισκόμαστε και οι ήρωες δεν θα μπορούσαν να μιλάνε όπως αν ήταν σε αίθουσα του πανεπιστημίου της Οξφόρδης!
Από εκεί και πέρα, και πάλι μιλώντας προσωπικά, δεν εντόπισα τίποτα που να με έκανε να βαρεθώ. Διάβασα ένα “τίμιο” βιβλίο που ακολούθησε μια σταθερή πορεία από την πρώτη μέχρι και την τελευταία του σελίδα.
Θα κλείσω λέγοντας ότι ο Μάστερτον από το 2014 και μετά έχει αφιερωθεί αρκετά στην Katie Maguire, καθώς έχει κυκλοφορήσει άλλα επτά (!) βιβλία με εκείνη πρωταγωνίστρια!

Μια πολύ δυνατή ερωτική σκηνή, αρκετά τολμηρή για τους ψευτολογοτεχνίζοντες.
Διαπροσωπικοί δεσμοί αληθοφανείς και μάλιστα έγινα αρκετές φορές πυρ και μανία με τον εγωισμό και την αναισθησία του Τζον, ωστόσο λυπάμαι που δίνεται η δυνατότητα μιας λήξης μέσω του από μηχανής θεού και η Κέϊτι δε φαίνεται να βλέπει αυτά τα χαρακτηριστικά του, γιατί αυτό που μένει ανεκπλήρωτο υπό αντίξοες συνθήκες δε στερεύει ποτέ και μας πάει πίσω.
Κάποια κλισέ στιγμιοτύπων δεν αποφεύγονται, αν και στη σελ. 296 γίνεται αρκετά ανατρεπτικός. Συνήθως, στις ''σειρές'' θεωρούμε δεδομένο πως κάποια πρόσωπα απλά θα συνεχίζουν να υπάρχουν.
Για άλλη μια φορά με κερδίζει στο συγγραφέα η σκυλοφιλία του.
Γενικά είναι ζεστό στα χέρια μου, ευχάριστο, κυλάει γρήγορα και γεμίζει τόσο στο θέμα της κορνίζας, όσο και της εικόνας. Η εικόνα δεν έχει τίποτα το περίπλοκο, αλλά ξεδιπλώνεται με μαεστρία.
Πέρασα ξέγνοιαστες στιγμές διαβάζοντας το στα μεσοδιαστήματα απ' το τούβλο του Ντάρελ.
Όταν μου αρέσει κάποιο βιβλίο της κατηγορίας αυτής συνηθίζω να κοιτάω αν έχει βγει το επόμενο. Ο Μάστερτον έχει βγάλει επόμενο βιβλίο, αλλά όχι με την Κέϊτι κι αυτό ομολογώ με ψιλοξενέρωσε. Άνετα θα το ξεκινούσα στο καπάκι, τόσο πολύ με διασκέδασε.
Trivia: Ομολογώ πάντως ότι όταν αποκάλεσε σε ορισμένη σκηνή κάποιο τεριέ, ''ποταμόχοιρο'', φύγανε τα φουντούνια απ' το στόμα μου, προς όλες τις κατευθύνσεις.

Eager to continue this series by Graham Masterton, I hoped to remain just as impressed. A police procedural set in rural Ireland, Masterton uses all the elements of a stellar backstory to chill the reader as they forge through this tale of abuse and horrific torture. Then again, those who know his work would expect nothing less of Graham Masterton. A winner in a series that has me completely enthralled already!
In County Cork, Detective Sergeant Katie Macguire has been trying to create new connections for herself while remaining at the top of her policing game. She’s pulled into the middle of a new case when a local priest is found tortured and murdered. A little hunting around shows that he may have been involved in some horrific abuse of local orphans in the past.
When the forensics from the scene point to genital mutilation with a harp string, DS Macguire and her team are surprised. While there is no love loss for Catholic priests by many, this seems to be slight overkill. They push to learn more, as a second victim turns up, also mutilated and with a similar string left at the scene. Someone is hunting Catholic priests with a murky past!
All the while, a man lurks in the shadows, having captured these priests when they least expect it. He speaks to them about their heinous actors and tries to get them to confess, hoping that their absolution will help lull them into a false sense of relief. Referring to himself as the Grey Mullet Man, there’s something he seeks but he is not completely forthcoming with his victims. Still, he is on a mission and will stop at nothing for answers.
While DS Macguire tries to solve this latest case, she is pulled in other directions by a new man in her life. Not a local, this man has high hopes of getting Macguire to accompany him back to America, where she will be able to reinvent herself. However, the killer out there has kept Macguire from making many of the needed decisions and she is now facing a new crossroads where her future is concerned. Masterton does a stellar job keeping readers enthused by this piece.
I thoroughly enjoyed a previous series of Graham Masterton’s, spurring me on to try this one. After devouring the series debut, I could not wait to get my hands on this book. In a novel that tackles a number of personal issues, Masterton touches on all of them effectively, while providing her reader with a chilling set of murders that weave their way into the mix. Captivating, disheartening, and suspenseful all at once, Masterton has the perfect recipe for a police procedural that is sure to garner a great deal of attention for those who take the time to read his books. I cannot wait to se how things progress from here.
Masterton has a way with his writing that makes the reader want to learn more through his storytelling. He develops a narrative flow that provides a smooth reading experience, while offering some ghastly events throughout, sure to shock the attentive reader. There are strong characters that fill the pages of the novel, permitting the reader to live thought them at various stages of the story. DS Katie Macguire receives more character development throughout, essential for the protagonist, keeping the reader connected to all that she has going on in her life. There were again some well-developed plot twists in the book, as well as the underlying discussion of abuse by priests in the Catholic Church, but Masterton offers his own perspective, which ended up being highly unique. I devoured this book and am again eager to see what happens with everyone in County Cork, especially some of the happenings with DS Macguire.
Kudos, Mr. Masterton, for another series I will be spending the summer enjoying!

All the while, a man lurks in the shadows, having captured these priests when they least expect it. He speaks to them about their heinous actors and tries to get them to confess, hoping that their absolution will help lull them into a false sense of relief. Referring to himself as the Grey Mullet Man, there’s something he seeks but he is not completely forthcoming with his victims. Still, he is on a mission and will stop at nothing for answers.
While DS Macguire tries to solve this latest case, she is pulled in other directions by a new man in her life. Not a local, this man has high hopes of getting Macguire to accompany him back to America, where she will be able to reinvent herself. However, the killer out there has kept Macguire from making many of the needed decisions and she is now facing a new crossroads where her future is concerned. Masterton does a stellar job keeping readers enthused by this piece.
I thoroughly enjoyed a previous series of Graham Masterton’s, spurring me on to try this one. After devouring the series debut, I could not wait to get my hands on this book. In a novel that tackles a number of personal issues, Masterton touches on all of them effectively, while providing her reader with a chilling set of murders that weave their way into the mix. Captivating, disheartening, and suspenseful all at once, Masterton has the perfect recipe for a police procedural that is sure to garner a great deal of attention for those who take the time to read his books. I cannot wait to se how things progress from here.
Masterton has a way with his writing that makes the reader want to learn more through his storytelling. He develops a narrative flow that provides a smooth reading experience, while offering some ghastly events throughout, sure to shock the attentive reader. There are strong characters that fill the pages of the novel, permitting the reader to live thought them at various stages of the story. DS Katie Macguire receives more character development throughout, essential for the protagonist, keeping the reader connected to all that she has going on in her life. There were again some well-developed plot twists in the book, as well as the underlying discussion of abuse by priests in the Catholic Church, but Masterton offers his own perspective, which ended up being highly unique. I devoured this book and am again eager to see what happens with everyone in County Cork, especially some of the happenings with DS Macguire.
Kudos, Mr. Masterton, for another series I will be spending the summer enjoying!

4.5 stars. This, the second book in the Katie Maguire series and again, I liked a lot. Masterton is excellent at creating chilling, grisly and graphic scenes in his crime novels and this one was no exception.
It's not for the squeamish, you've been warned! The entire book focuses around the hunt for the killers of the local priesthood, whom I might add are discovered castrated, yes, castrated in gory detail. It's an intriguing storyline with a sideline into Katie Maguire's private life again as with the first book.
I liked the way the book kept revealing bits and pieces of the puzzle and the pace is strong. The torture scenes are hard to read but you keep reading anyway, like bystanders gawking at a hideous car crash, you can't help yourself.
I think Katie is better too in this second novel, she is more evolved as a character. I like her police work. I noted a lot of other reviews comment on the use of Irish slang being too excessive and even unrealistic in this book, however it's exactly spot on of how they speak in County Cork, Ireland on an everyday basis (I lived there). So it's a very authentic novel and Masterton has done that well although if you've never heard the terms before I can understand why they seem strange.
It's a cracking read with a great storyline that will give you the shivers at times. Highly recommended book. Grab the first book then this one for best understanding of Katie’s character but this could be read as a stand alone book.

Όταν πιάσεις στα χέρια σου βιβλίο του Graham Masterton, ξέρεις ότι θα απολαύσεις την κάθε του σελίδα. Αναρωτιέσαι τι άραγε να κάνεις; Να μετακομίσεις για να έχεις ησυχία; Να κλειδωθείς στην ντουλάπα; Το μόνο σίγουρο είναι πως δεν γίνεται να μην παρατήσεις ότι δουλειές κι αν έχεις για να αφοσιωθείς στο βιβλίο του.
Όταν το ξεκίνησα, ένιωσα μια ευχάριστη έκπληξη καθώς είδα πως ο συγγραφέας είχε κάνει μια μικρή στροφή στο είδος της συγγραφής του προς την αστυνομική λογοτεχνία. Αμέσως σκέφτηκα: "Τι πιο ωραίο; Ένα αστυνομικό βιβλίο από τον Masterton! Τι άλλο να ζητήσει ένας λάτρης του είδους;".
Σε ένα χωριό της Ιρλανδίας, το Κορκ, δυο ψαράδες ανακαλύπτουν το πτώμα ενός ιερέα. Είναι φρικτά κακοποιημένο και ευνουχισμένο. Είναι ανθρώπινη και πεισματάρα και αυτό είναι ένα μεγάλο ατού του βιβλίου καθώς ο χαρακτήρας της Κέιτι σε συνδυασμό με το τοπίο της Ιρλανδίας που μας περιγράφει κάνει την ιστορία του ρεαλιστική. It's hard to really invest in a lead character when everything not glued to the "we gotta catch the bad guys" central plot is grown in ground so shallow that it's unable to sustain anything of weight or worth. I'm all for a good popcorn thriller, but book two of this series delivered mostly kernels.

Well I know where the word castration derives from......... This was my second Masterton book and the second in the Katie Maguire series. Masterton is sometimes referred to as the king of horror but in my mind he writes a very mean and graphic thriller much along the lines of one of my favourite's Cris Carter who I believe is more graphic when it comes to his crimes. I am always looking for a good true horror and these guys fit the bill without crossing the line into extreme horror (which I do read and enjoy but understand that its not for everyone). So I guess I would say that these type of books thread the needle of the in between of mainstream horror and extreme. In my mind I think I've read six between the two and have rated them all five stars.
So a castrated body is found in the water and a witness saw the body dragged out into the water and observed a black van with weird markings as well as the suspect wearing a pointed hat along the lines of a Klansman. Things get interesting when detective Katie Maguire discovers the victim was a priest and he has been tortured and castrated. Naturally the RC church gets involved in the investigation and wants things kept quiet. The time setting is when many many (way too many) people were coming forward with complaints of molestation and such. Katie Maguire and the Garda (Irish police) investigated many such complaints against the church but it was felt that there was not enough evidence to pursue charges. Early 2000's I guess.
Monsignor Kelly throws himself into the investigation on behalf of the church and he seemingly has a patsy to hold responsible. It is Kelly who wants the investigation to proceed cautiously so as to not bring bad press to the church. Yet when another priest is found in much the same light the Garda think that it is a group of sexually abused persons seeking vengeance against the priests who sexually abused them. The priests involved have all been investigated with regard to such past allegations.
The author does a good job getting into the psychology of sexual abuse especially pertaining to men. There is an add on the NFL network saying one in sex men have suffered sexual abuse and never report it. I totally buy that. Hell it's insane what a woman goes through in cases of sexual abuse. The whole court process puts the woman on trial and is likely equally if not moreso worse for her. Just a joke. And in the case of a man the author gets into the fact that they likely enjoyed it to some level as they were physically stimulated and brought to the point of erection. Like a man would have to live with the shame of that and really doubt himself. Just insane stuff really but the author does a great job with it.
Throughout the book there is a backdrop of Katie's romantic relationship with her boyfriend John who is originally from the states. He came over when his dad died in book 1 to take care of the farm but now that his mother is in good hands and the farm is going bankrupt he has an opportunity to get into an internet start up company but has to get back to San Fran to run it. He wants Katie to go with him and can get her a high paying job with Pinkerton's. Katie just doesn't know what she should do.
So several priests go missing and get tortured. Some of the graphic writing pertaining to their torture is a bit unsettling and not for everyone but I really did enjoy it and felt that they deserved it. Funny thing is that the perpetrators carrying out the acts are not seeking retaliation for past sexual abuse. In fact what they are seeking retribution for is what was done to them and now they want what was promised to them delivered!
A very odd but oh so excellent ending that in a very very indirect way brings God himself into the picture. A very difficult book to review without spoilers but hopefully I have done it justice and teased you enough to read Masterton and this series. Ps it can be read as a stand alone. I'm really starting to love Masterton and I think I will branch out re his books to try and find something really worthy of the title King of Horror. I should note that I read this in mid August and am just reviewing it now. It remains clearly in my mind which is admittedly rare but I think speaks to its overall quality. An easy five stars and I have a feeling there are so many more five star ratings of his I can easily dig up. Enjoy 😎

Για μια ακόμη φορά μετα την τρομερή ομορφιά μετα το τέλος του βιβλίου εχω μείνει και κοιτάω το ταβάνι προσπαθώντας να βαλω σε μια σειρα οτι διάβασα. Αυτο το ταλέντο του Masterton να σε καθηλώνει με τη γραφή του με τρόπο που δε θες να αφήσεις το βιβλίο απο τα χέρια σου ούτε λεπτό το συναντώ σπάνια. Παρόλο που εχει σκηνές που θεωρούνται εξαιρετικά σκληρές ο τρόπος που τις αποδίδει, το χιούμορ του και η αμεσότητα του σε κανουν να μην θες να τελειωσει το βιβλιο.Το θεμα που θίγει είναι ειναι αρκετα δύσκολο στην προσέγγιση του και ομως σου δίνει ολες τις πληροφορίες απο Ιστορικης και Θρησκευτικης αποψεως ωστε να μην εχεις κενα και απορίες. Παρολα αυτα το βιβλίο δεν κουραζει καθόλου με περιττές ή ασαφείς περιγραφές. Απόλαυσα την καθε γράμμη σε σημείο που αναρωτηθηκα μήπως είμαι σαδίστρια. Μορφώθηκα και λίγο μιας και έμαθα ξωφαλτσα γιατι ο Αρκάς προσφωνει τον ήρωα του Καστράτο. Οι σελίδες κυλούν, τα γεγονότα τρέχουν, και νιωθεις σαν να τρεχεις σε ενα αγωνα δρόμου μαζι με τους ήρωες. Κατα την διαρκεία της ανάγνωσης θύμωσα λυπήθηκα με έπιασε τρόμος ένιωσα αγωνία αγχώθηκα και στο τελος ήρθε η λύτρωση. Ισως καποιοι θα προτιμουσαν ενα τελος διαφορετικο. Εγω το βρηκα εξαιρετικά ευφάνταστο. Αντε τωρα να περιμένεις το επόμενο με την αστυνομικό Κέιτ την οποια αγαπησα στην τρομερή ομορφιά και σε αυτό απλά τη λάτρεψα!

In Broken Angels, the second book featuring County Cork DI Katie Maguire, Graham Masterton focuses the plot on religion and beliefs. It picks up 18 months after the end of White Bones, when Katie is investigating the murder of a priest who has been castrated. While this could be a very obvious story line if you think about possible motives, it was anything but. I admit I found the brutal torture scenes in this one more disturbing than in book 1. Listening to the graphic descriptions actually made me squirm, which is highly unusual for me. But the scene with the rat really was horrendous. It's definitely not for the faint-hearted!
The police procedural blends well with the plot line about Katie's personal life. But there were several inconsistencies that really should have been picked up by an editor. Those were details regarding the content that made no sense and were contradictory. And my last bit of criticism, please Mr. Masterton no more of those Katie sex scenes. I don't mind them at all if done well, but in this instance, there was just so much wrong with them. I also hope the recurring lesbian attraction angle will be dropped now.
Nevertheless, I still enjoyed this very much and I think a lot of it was due to the absolute perfect 5 stars audio book narration by Caroline Lennon.
While the above may actually sound rather negative, I still think this was a terrific thriller, and I really liked it despite my points of critique. On to book 3.

Ένα πολύ καλό αστυνομικό βιβλίο, με σωστή δομή και πολλές ανατροπές. Για ακόμα μία φορά οι φόνοι είναι εξαιρετικά παραστατικοί και ιδιαιτέρως ειδεχθείς.
Μου αρέ��ει πολύ η Katie ως ηρωίδα, καθώς είναι μια προσγειωμένη και καθημερινή γυναίκα, η οποία προσπαθεί να δείξει την αξία της σε μία θέση που λίγες γυναίκες έχουν βρεθεί.
Στη συγκεκριμένη ιστορία, θίγεται ένα πολύ δύσκολο θέμα και γίνεται με έναν τρόπο που το αναδεικνύει στις σωστές του διαστάσεις.
Οφείλω να παραδεχτώ, ότι ο τρόπος γραφής του συγγραφέα με κάνει να θέλω να συνεχίσω να διαβάζω και να μην μπορώ να αφήσω το βιβλίο από τα χέρια μου!

Καθαρόαιμο αστυνομικό θρίλερ με γραφικούς φόνους (Μαστερτον είναι αυτος) και εντονη επίκριση στους ιερείς της εκκλησίας. Γενικά όπου διαβάζω για σαδιστικους φόνους ανωμάλων παπάδων είναι must από εμένα :)

I really enjoyed the first book in this series although it has been several years since I read it. Certainly this one lived up to the promise of the first book - another gripping and thrilling crime drama, great characters and storyline and equally as gory, occasionally uncomfortably so! A minor cliffhanger at the end means that I will have to read the next in the series soon! - 9+/10.

Certainly this one lived up to the promise of the first book - another gripping and thrilling crime drama, great characters and storyline and equally as gory, occasionally uncomfortably so! I really enjoyed reading this book, following Katie Maguire as she runs a race against time to catch whoever is responsible for a series of brutal slayings of local priests in Cork. First though, she has to figure out why they are being singled out, all she knows is that they were involved in events going back to 1983 involving the abuse of children in their care. I have to say, that this is not a book for the faint hearted. The slayings are brutal and sadistic and described in depth. I found myself wincing quite a lot!
I really like the character of Katie. She has forged a successful career for herself in the Garda, is bright, intelligent, caring and feminine. I love the way she picked out what clothes to wear in order to make the right impression on certain occasions. She is also at something of a crossroads in her personal life, which made good reading and a break from the gory bloodfest going on all around her. The book is full of very good, realistic characters who are interesting to read about. The story flows well, for the most part, as the story unfolds on the page. It is at times brutal but can also be passionate and every so often there are those little one liners that you often come across in Irish books that just put a great smile on your face.
However, I have to say that read was spoiled for me by a lot of editing errors, mainly words missing which interrupted my reading quite a bit. There were also a couple of silly things that bugged me – at one point Katie had to speak on the telephone to a Garda officer in another division to order him to lend one of her officers a squad car, yet the next day she didn’t know anything about it, as well as a fireman who wore sunglasses in the middle of the night!
All in all though, this is a really gripping page-turner.

Although I only gave the book 3 stars, I did feel compelled to finish it. It was tough to read at times, with graphic descriptions of the murders but what annoyed me more than anything was the writer's habit of adding in 'Irish sayings' that nobody in Ireland ever uses! It was very obvious that it was not an Irish person that wrote the book, but for any sadists out there you'll probably love it ;-)

Μπορεί να είναι Ιούνιος σήμερα που το τελείωσα αλλά το συγκεκριμένο ανήκει στο #crimayathon2023. Είναι το τελευταίο βιβλίο αστυνομικής λογοτεχνίας που ήθελα να τελειώσω μέσα στον Μάιο αλλά λόγω έλλειψης χρόνου δεν τα κατάφερα. Ήταν ένα από τα βιβλία που ήθελα να διαβάσω εδώ και πολύυυ καιρό, σχεδόν από τις πρώτες μέρες που είχα φτιάξει λογαριασμό στο Goodreads. Γι'αυτό νομίζω καταλαβαίνετε την χαρά μου όταν το έπιασα στα χέρια μου. Το ανέβαλα συνεχώς γιατί, με βάση την περίληψη, πίστευα οτι θα διαβάσω για παιδιά που κακοποιούνται, κάτι το οποίο είναι εξαιρετικά βαρύ. Ευτυχώς, δεν υπήρχε κάποια τέτοια γραφική σκηνή. Απλά αναφορές στο παρελθόν.
Η ιστορία του παρόντος είναι πως δολοφονούνται βάναυσα ιερείς που στο παρελθόν είχαν κακοποιήσει αγόρια. Το ποιος είναι ο δολοφόνος είναι προφανές από την αρχή. Ο λόγος όμως που σε κρατά σε ενδιαφέρον το βιβλίο είναι το τι ακριβώς είχε γίνει στο παρελθόν. Ποια είναι τα σκοτεινά μυστικά της εκκλησίας; Γιατί ο πρωτοσύγκελος κατηγορεί ένα συγκεκριμένο άτομο για τις δολοφονίες παρόλο που δεν υπάρχει κάποιο κίνητρο;
Παράλληλα, η ζωή της ντετέκτιβ Κέιτ έξω από την υπόθεση έχει πάρει άλλη τροπή καθώς ο σύντροφός της πρέπει να επιστρέψει πίσω στην Αμερική γιατί η φάρμα του φαλήρισε. Τι θα κάνει άραγε; Θα πάει μαζί του για να μην χάσει τον έρωτα ή θα κάτσει στην Ιρλανδία για να μην χάσει την οικογένεια και την καριέρα της για την οποία εργάστηκε τόσο σκληρά;
Σίγουρα ενδιαφέρον βιβλίο για το οποίο άξιζε η αναμονή! Μπορεί να μην με είχε κερδίσει από τις πρώτες σελίδες και, για να είμαι ειλικρινής, δεν ήταν σαν το προηγούμενο του συγγραφέα αλλά ήταν σίγουρα πολύ καλό! Θα ξαναπώ ότι μετά την "Τρομερή Ομορφιά" του ίδιου, δεν νομίζω ότι θα με συγκλονίσει κάτι παραπάνω.
Δεν είχε την ένταση του προηγούμενου αλλά ήταν δυνατό και είχε δράμα.
Δεν έχω να πω κάτι παραπάνω. 😅

The author goes deep into explaining the looks, shapes and sizes of the character each time a new plot appears. There is not much progress done by the detective even though the story keeps on going, as if everything is dependent on their luck, they rarely use their brain. In both the book in this series, end is extra fictional. Not able to save any of the victims and the executor. Won't even think to read the third book.

Κοιτά να δεις που θα γίνω και φαν του Μαστερτον! Προς Θεού, δε τον σνόμπαρα ποτε αλλά δε περίμενα ότι η γραφή του θα ταίριαζε στο αναγνωστικό μου γούστο.
Το δεύτερο λοιπόν βιβλιο της σειράς παραμένει εξίσου ενδιαφέρον με το πρώτο και αποτελεί ένα κράμα αστυνομικού και μυστηριακού βιβλιου με αρκετά ψήγματα απο το φανταστικό συγγραφικό παρελθόν του συγγραφέα.

An einem kalten Frühlingsmorgen in der Grafschaft Cork finden zwei Fischer im Blackwater River den aufgeblähten Körper von Father Heaney. Hände und Füße sind gefesselt und um den Hals trägt er die Würgemale einer Garrotte. Zudem ist er kastriert worden.
Kurz darauf wird ein zweiter Priester auf die gleiche Weise zu Tode gefoltert.
Katie Maguire befürchtet, dass ein Serienmörder gerade erst mit seinen Taten begonnen hat … (Klappentext)

Bei Graham Masterton ist man bereits ab der ersten Seite mitten drin, statt nur dabei, denn genau hier stößt man bereits auf die erste Leiche.
Im 2. Band der Katie Maguire-Reihe stolpert man nicht auf einem Acker über das erste Opfer, sondern es wird einem vor die Füße geschwemmt. Besser gesagt dem Fischer Denis, der viel lieber einen Lachs, anstatt eine Leiche aus dem Fluß gefischt hätte.
Bei der Leiche handelt es sich um den örtlichen Pfarrer Father Heaney. Da dieser nicht bei einem andächtigen Gebets-Spaziergang in den Fluß gefallen ist, sondern es augenscheinlich Mord war, ist dies ein Fall für Katie Maguire, der erste weibliche Detective Superintendent in Cork.
Der Geistliche ist wie ein Truthahn verschnürt, wurde erdrosselt und unter seiner Soutane grausam verstümmelt. Da bekommt die Bezeichnung "Overkill" doch gleich eine ganz andere Bedeutung. Father Heaney war jedoch kein gütiger und rechtschaffener Pfarrer, dem das Wohl seiner Schäfchen am Herzen lag, sondern mächtig Dreck am Stecken hat. Er wurde 2005 des sexuellen Mißbrauchs von Schutzbefohlenen beschuldigt, jedoch nie angeklagt. Schon toll, wenn die Kirche die schützende Hand über einen hält.
Bald darauf wird eine weitere Leiche entdeckt - wieder ein Pfarrer und wieder einer mit einer düsteren Mißbrauchs-Vergangenheit.
Ist hier ein abtrünniges Schäfchen auf Rachefeldzug, oder steckt hier viel mehr dahinter? (Persönl. Inhaltsangabe)
Wie schon erwähnt, ist dies der 2. Teil der Katie Maguire-Reihe und spielt 18 Monate nach dem 1. Teil "Bleiche Knochen". Trotzdem kann dieser unabhängig vom 1. Teil gelesen werden. Wichtige Informationen bezüglich des 1. Teils sind mit der Story gut verwoben. Somit erhalten Neuleser genug Informationen, um Zusammenhänge zu verstehen, ohne das es jedoch für Katie Maguiere-Kenner langweilig wird.
Auch hier erhält man zusätzlich auch Einblick in die Sicht der Opfer. Das ist nicht gerade ohne, denn Masterton hat sich auch hier wieder ganz besondere Folter-Schmankerln ausgedacht. Diesmal haben diese Bezüge zur spanischen Inquisition und die waren ja äußerst erfinderisch bei Foltermethoden.
Der sehr bildhafte und plastische Schreibstil lässt einem fast selbst die Schmerzen spüren und wenn nicht das, dann hat man ordentliches Kopfkino.
Wirklich Mitleid empfindet man für die gequälten Pfaffen trotzdem nur bedingt, denn sie haben ordentlich Schuld und Sünde auf sich geladen und scheinen immer noch von ihren Taten überzeugt zu sein, da diese ja im Namen des Herrn geschahen.
Hier kommt die Kirche allgemein nicht wirklich gut weg, denn es scheint die gesamte Diözese die Finger im Spiel zu haben. Diese versucht weiterhin so viel wie möglich zu vertuschen. Es wird gelogen, gedroht und geleugnet und das im ganz großen Stil.

Sie sollten mal sehen, was für Schwergewichte die Kirche beschäftigt.

Obwohl schnell klar ist, dass sich hier frühere Opfer auf Rachefeldzug befinden und einen Pfarrer nach dem anderen auf bestialische Weise foltern und abmurksen, konnte mich Masterton beim Showdown doch noch etwas überraschen. Irgendwie hätte ich mir trotzdem gewünscht, dass es zu einer völlig neuen Wendung kommt. Es war also schon etwas sehr vorhersehbar. Der Fall konnte mich jedoch trotzdem durchaus unterhalten und es war spannend und temporeich.
Dieser Thriller war, von dem Standpunkt aus betrachtet, also ziemlich solide, wenn dieses private Gesülze nicht gewesen wäre.
Die Hälfte des Buches wird von den privaten Problemen Katies eingenommen, welche nicht mal wirklich interessant sind. Im 1. Teil fand ich den Handlungsstrang der privaten Katie interessant und fesselnd, da es fast ein eigener kleiner Fall mit Action war, doch diesmal...einfach nur nerviges Privat-Mimimi.
Und dann hat Masterton auch noch "Erotik" einfließen lassen. Also das hätte ich nun wirklich am allerwenigsten gebraucht, vor allem da es alles andere als erotisch war.
"Seine Eichel war tiefrot angeschwollen und ein klarer Tropfen der freudigen Erwartung zwinkerte ihr bereits aus der Öffnung zu.
Sie nahm seinen straffen, faltigen Hoden in ihre linke Handfläche und wickelte sein dunkles Schamhaar um ihren rechten Zeigefinger."

What the hell!! Ich will in keinem Buch und schon gar nicht in einem Thriller weder von einem Penis, noch von einem Lusttröpfchen angezwinkert werden. Und mir vorzustellen, wie lange ein Schamhaar sein muss, um es sich um den Zeigefinger zu wickeln hilft mir bei einem Thriller auch nicht wirklich weiter und will ich daher erst recht nicht. Nein, nein, nein!
Zudem scheint Katie ja ein mächtig heißes Gerät mit dicken Titten zu sein (laut Beschreibung des Autors, also nicht auf meinem Mist gewachsen), denn ständig steht jemand auf sie, von ihrem Freund mal abgesehen. Angefangen beim Feuerwehrmann, bis hin zur lesbischen Pathologin.
Also echt mal, muss das denn sein? Ich will einen Thriller mit Spannung, Blut und Leichen und keinen Schnulzen-Erotik-Roman.
Das war aber noch nicht alles, denn ein 2. privates Problem taucht auf, als Katies Schwester in Katies Haus niedergeschlagen wurde. Also wieder eine Handlungsunterbrechung mehr, bei der sich Katie anstellt, als wäre sie eine Ermittlerin, welche auf der Nudelsuppe dahergeschwommen ist. "Nö, Forensik und Beweisführung brauch' ma ned. Ich glaub dem Typen einfach mal...des passt scho." Argh!! Die Auflösung dazu, wird dem Leser also als Tatsache vor die Füße geworfen, nach dem Motto: "Wenn ich das jetzt so sag', ist es auch so, basta!"
Wenn man diesen ganzen Unsinn weggelassen hätte, wäre das Buch dann zwar um die Hälfte dünner gewesen, der Thriller hätte jedoch im Gegenzug ordentlich Biss und Spannung gehabt, wenn schon kein völlig überraschendes Ende.
Fazit:
Mit diesem Teil hat mich Masterton ordentlich enttäuscht (von dem Blinzelpenis und dem überlangen Schamhaar bin ich immer noch leicht traumatisiert).
In einem blutigen Thriller brauche ich weder privates Mimimi und schon gar keine Erotik. Da will ich Spannung, Tempo, Blut und das alles in einer Story fern von 08/15.
Normalerweise wäre dies für mich ein Zeichen eine Reihe nicht mehr weiterzuverfolgen. Da ich jedoch weiß, dass Masterton auch anders kann, ich seinen plastischen, kopfkinoerzeugenden Schreibstil liebe und er auch immer viel Fantasie bei seinen Stories beweist, werde ich ihm für den 3. Teil dieser Reihe noch eine Chance geben. Schlimmer kann es ja eigentlich nicht mehr werden.

Zudem scheint Katie ja ein mächtig heißes Gerät mit dicken Titten zu sein (laut Beschreibung des Autors, also nicht auf meinem Mist gewachsen), denn ständig steht jemand auf sie, von ihrem Freund mal abgesehen. Angefangen beim Feuerwehrmann, bis hin zur lesbischen Pathologin.
Also echt mal, muss das denn sein? Ich will einen Thriller mit Spannung, Blut und Leichen und keinen Schnulzen-Erotik-Roman.
Das war aber noch nicht alles, denn ein 2. privates Problem taucht auf, als Katies Schwester in Katies Haus niedergeschlagen wurde. Also wieder eine Handlungsunterbrechung mehr, bei der sich Katie anstellt, als wäre sie eine Ermittlerin, welche auf der Nudelsuppe dahergeschwommen ist. "Nö, Forensik und Beweisführung brauch' ma ned. Ich glaub dem Typen einfach mal...des passt scho." Argh!! Die Auflösung dazu, wird dem Leser also als Tatsache vor die Füße geworfen, nach dem Motto: "Wenn ich das jetzt so sag', ist es auch so, basta!"
Wenn man diesen ganzen Unsinn weggelassen hätte, wäre das Buch dann zwar um die Hälfte dünner gewesen, der Thriller hätte jedoch im Gegenzug ordentlich Biss und Spannung gehabt, wenn schon kein völlig überraschendes Ende.
Fazit:
Mit diesem Teil hat mich Masterton ordentlich enttäuscht (von dem Blinzelpenis und dem überlangen Schamhaar bin ich immer noch leicht traumatisiert).
In einem blutigen Thriller brauche ich weder privates Mimimi und schon gar keine Erotik. Da will ich Spannung, Tempo, Blut und das alles in einer Story fern von 08/15.
Normalerweise wäre dies für mich ein Zeichen eine Reihe nicht mehr weiterzuverfolgen. Da ich jedoch weiß, dass Masterton auch anders kann, ich seinen plastischen, kopfkinoerzeugenden Schreibstil liebe und er auch immer viel Fantasie bei seinen Stories beweist, werde ich ihm für den 3. Teil dieser Reihe noch eine Chance geben. Schlimmer kann es ja eigentlich nicht mehr werden.

Δεν ξέρω αν ξεκίνησα σωστά καθώς γνωρίζω πως είναι κυρίως συγγραφέας βιβλίων τρόμου όπως «Ο Παρίας», «Ο άρχοντας του ψεύδους», «Το Μανιτού», «Αυτοί που ποτέ δεν κοιμούνται» και άλλα πολλά αφού είναι πολυγραφότατος. «Οι πληγωμένοι άγγελοι» ανήκουν στα βιβλία της αστυνομικής του σειράς με ηρωίδα την Κέιτ Μαγκουάιρ και οι ιστορίες τους εκτυλίσσονται στο Κορκ της Ιρλανδίας. Πόσες φορές ακούγονται διάφορες ασχήμιες που συμβαίνουν στους κόλπους της εκκλησίας αλλά συγκαλύπτονται ακριβώς για να μη χαλάσει η μόστρα, να μην έρθουν στην επιφάνεια αμαρτωλά μυστικά των ανθρώπων που υπηρετούν τον Θεό. Οι σκηνές που αναπαριστά ο Masterton στα βιβλία του είναι εξαιρετικά γραφικές μέσα από την διαρκή κινητικότητα της πλοκής του ζωντανεύοντας σκληρές εικόνες στα μάτια των αναγνωστών. Το ατμοσφαιρικό σκηνικό του Ιρλανδικού τοπίου μαζί με τους λιγοστούς ιδιωματισμούς που χρησιμοποιούνται από τον συγγραφέα προσδίδει πολλά θετικά στοιχεία στη ρεαλιστικότητα τόσο των χαρακτήρων όσο και της ιστορίας του. The second book following the career of Detective Inspector Kate McGuire. It's a tough and an uncomfortable read as at times it involves repeated scenes of castration (ouch!)The story revolves around the creation of a "choir of Castrati" and as this suggest involves sexual and physical abuse. A number of priests are disappearing soon to be found horribly mutilated, all evidence points to an abuse of power and privilege within the church. The action is fast, the storyline never falters, and all this set against Kate's personal life which is fast disintegrating. I actually preferred book one in the series "White Bones" (originally released as A Terrible Beauty) but both are great reads by the master of horror Graham Masterton turning his talents to gritty crime writing...I look forward to no.3 in the series.

I was totally mesmerised by this book, it was an exceptional read. The horror made me cringe, but the storyline carried me through to the end.
This is an exceptional book and one that will stay in my thoughts for a long time to come.

I am really beginning to enjoy this series as I particularly like Katie Maguire as a character, her colleagues are also easily identifiable but who knows if any will cross the line in future novels. Based in Ireland, the reader will expect religion to be thrown in to the mix somewhere along the way and this novel does not disappoint.
There are more priests and bishops than in a game of chess.
Of course things happen to them but with any novel by Masterton, the victims do not all die in their 😴.
Although there are very few red herrings, this is a real page turner as the reader wants to know how the so called baddies end up.
Not one for the faint hearted.

A bunch of elderly clergy are being killed and castrated , but the Catholic Church have closed ranks and Katie is having difficulty getting any further in this case.
Once again the crimes committed are so horrifically written you can tell Mr Masterton has a horror genre background.

I actually really enjoy Graham Masterton's mystery work--I enjoyed the first Katie Maguire novel a great deal. She's a likable heroine--strong and smart and funny with a touch of tragedy. I think that's why I had some issues with this volume in the series. I don't like to put spoilers in my reviews, hidden or not but I had issues with decisions her character made in terms of her romantic life. I liked the actual mystery subject a lot. I found it creepy and interesting and suitably gory as is typical with Masterton. I would definitely have given it a higher rating had Katie's personal story line gone differently--I would just say that I am a romantic and I am good with the idea of sacrifice for love but I felt some of her behavior was just out of character for such a strong female character. It truly interfered with my enjoyment of the book. If you don't care as much about that sort of thing, the book is great--it has good twists, some creative and icky deaths and a bang-pop of an ending. I tend to get very attached to characters in books and some Katie's decisions just did not sit well with me. That said, nothing will ever stop me reading Graham Masterton--he's wonderful.

Graham Masterton in Broken Angels has written an excellent police procedural with a plot concerning priests, previously accused of having sexually abused orphaned children in their care but released due to lack of evidence. Then these same priests begin to be found in Cork City tortured to death, as well as castrated. All told, this should be a straight forward story, however, the deeper Katie digs the more disturbing the reality of this case becomes. And, the truth of things is ferociously protected by members of the Catholic Church. Mr. Masterton writes very graphic scenes, so reader beware. But, nothing that is beyond the movement of the plot. The personal life of the main character Katie is skillfully woven into the story and the general Irish character setting, and atmosphere lends much to the integrity of the book. I have picked up on some Colourful Irish sayings, as an extra bonus. All together a fun read, even if I may not be able to quite get a scene involving a rat out of my head anytime soon.

In this, the second book of the Katie Maguire series, two fishermen spot a body in the water. The man is trussed up and quite dead. When Katie and her team respond to the call, they discover that the man had been castrated. The tentative identification is that he is one Father Heaney. He was accused several times of abusing the boys to whom he taught music, but was never convicted.
Chief Superintendent O’Driscoll and Detective Superintendent Katie Maguire get an invitation to see Monsignor Kelly at their earliest convenience. The Monsignor shows them a badly written letter from a Brendan Doody confessing to Father Heaney’s murder and saying he is going to commit suicide. He has disappeared. Katie and O’Driscoll are skeptical.
Meanwhile, as the reader learns, there is another murder of a priest called Father Quinlan is taking place. His attacker styles himself as “The Grey Mullet Man.” It appears we may have a serial murderer on the loose.
When Father Quinlan’s body is found hanging upside down from a flagpole, Monsignor Kelly’s assertion that Brendan Doody is responsible is all shot to heck. Katie and Superintendent O’Driscoll never bought the Monsignor’s theory anyway.
Katie’s boyfriend, John Meagher, is selling his nearly bankrupt farm and moving back to California. He wants Katie to go with him. He wants to marry her. Katie is in a quandary. She is still pondering the proposal when she gets home to discover her sister Siobhan in the house. Her home has been vandalized and Siobahn has been badly hit in the head. Was someone mistaking her for Katie? Who could do this? Siobahn lies in intensive care, but is expected to make a recovery.
Gerry O’Dwyer, formerly known as Father O’Gara is the third victim. The police get some valuable clues from Father Heaney’s diaries. Translated from the Latin by a professor, they detail a horrific plan to bring God to earth in the flesh. It lists the names of the priests who conspired to bring this plan to fruition. Katie goes to visit the leader of a survivor group. He fills Katie in with some valuable information. She doesn’t know yet how it will help, but that glimmer she gets when she spots a valuable lead is there.
Two more priests go unaccounted for. One of the priests is missing. One is abducted and Sergeant Jimmy O’Rourke is missing as well. The case is moving apace now. Katie interviews one of the survivors of abuse who said he had heard of the priests and their plan.
Brilliant and determined detective work brings a huge lead in the case. It ties in beautifully with what Katie was told by the leader of the survivor group.
This is a very well written and plotted novel. It, like the first in this series, is not for the faint-hearted. What was done to the victims in this novel was horrific and devastating. Mr. Masterton’s descriptions are blunt and no nonsense. It’s like a punch.
