About the author

John Ostrander is an American writer of comic books. He is best known for his work on Suicide Squad, Grimjack and Star Wars: Legacy, series he helped create.

Originally an actor in a Chicago theatre company, Ostrander moved into writing comics in 1983. His first published works were stories about the character "Sargon, Mistress of War", who appeared the First Comics series Warp!, based on a series of plays by that same Chicago theatre company. He is co-creator of the character Grimjack with Timothy Truman, who originally appeared in a back up story in the First Comics title, Starslayer, before going on to appear in his own book, again published by First Comics in the mid 1980s. First Comics ceased publication in 1991, by which time Ostrander was already doing work for other comics companies (his first scripts for DC Comics were published in 1986).

Prior to his career in comic books, Ostrander studied theology with the intent of becoming a Catholic priest, but now describes himself as an agnostic. His in-depth explorations of morality were later used in his work writing The Spectre, a DC Comics series about the manifestation of the wrath of God. His focus on the character's human aspect, a dead police detective from the 1930s named Jim Corrigan, and his exploration of moral and theological themes brought new life to a character often thought of as impossible to write. He has also worked on Firestorm, Justice League, Martian Manhunter, Manhunter, Suicide Squad, and Wasteland for DC.

This has to be my least favorite Predator series that I own. And after reading it again today I remember why. Magnus is a total douche... I'm sorry but he is. See the Predator is a bad guy (big surprise) and Magnus is the hero. At the end of Magnus defeats the Predator and his clan gives Magnus a ring to which Magnus throws it back in their faces. WTF dude? Jerk! Ugh! 😂😂😂

I think this is one of the better Predator crossovers I've read. The Lee Weeks art is exceptional, and it does have a good story behind it. This came out in 1992, and I think it just missed the nosedive comics took when Image got popular and it all became about pretty pictures and fancy covers and the stories became an afterthought. I know some readers didn't like this one, but I thought it was very well done.

I don't know enough about Magnus to be fully pulled into this crossover, but I managed to find the two single issues that this book consists of at a thrift store and decided to give it a read. Predator is one of my favorite franchises to read of, after all. It was just alright.

Obviously, with only two issues, there isn't going to be much of a plot, but the good news is that it did involve a lot of action. As I said before, I don't know anything of Magnus, but judging by this mini-series, I don't like him. With a crossover such as this, both franchises are typically written to pay respects to both and so,as expected, guess what? Both sides won, technically. However, after receiving a gift from one of the Predators, Magnus tosses it away. Look, just be glad they don't shoot you on the spot, okay?

Anyway, I've read quite a few crossovers over the years and this one doesn't really stick out. It should only be read for completionist purposes only.

Hard to beat any story that has a 'VS' in the title.
Hunters supreme of the galaxy, the Predators, have landed in the far future Earth of Magnus, robot fighter and they have a specific prize in mind.
Unfortunately, that prize is sitting in Magnus girlfriend's apartment, which ensures that there will be a fight.
There's also a group of annoying 'urban hunters' that get caught in the middle and tend to get beat up by both Magnus and Predator to show how tough both are.

Not a ton of plot, but a good kickass story that is mostly one long brawl.

বিভিন্ন মুভির কারণে প্রেডেটরকে কে না চিনেন! পৃথিবীতে হাজার হাজার বছর ধরে শুধুমাত্র যোগ্য প্রতিপক্ষকে শিকার করতে আসা এই ভয়ানক এলিয়েন শিকারের করোটি ও মেরুদন্ড অনেকটা মেডেলের মতো নিজের কাছে জমা রাখেন। ৭ ফুটের উপর লম্বা এবং ৩৫০ পাউন্ডের এই দানব সবসময় নতুন শিকার তথা নতুন ফাইটের অপেক্ষায় থাকেন। তাঁর সেই ধাঁরালো চাকতি যা ছুড়ে মারলে প্রতিপক্ষের রক্ষা নেই, তাঁর সেই ক্লাবের মতো অস্ত্র যা বর্শার মতো কাজ করে, তাঁর ঘাড়ের উপরের সেই বীম শ্যুটার যা যেকোন শত্রুকে ছিন্নভিন্ন করে দেয় এবং বেশি বিপদে পড়ে গেলে নিজের হাতে থাকা পারমাণবিক অস্ত্র দিয়ে এমন আত্মঘাতী হামলা চালাতে পারে এই প্রেডেটর যাতে আশেপাশে বিশাল এলাকা উড়িয়ে দিতে সক্ষম। অদৃশ্য হয়ে যাওয়ার ক্ষমতা এবং স্পেক্ট্রা ভিশনের সাথে সাথে ইনফ্রারেডের ব্যবহার প্রেডেটরকে যেকোন হরর ক্যারেক্টারের থেকে কোন অংশে কম ভীতিকর করে না। প্রেডেটরের ছোড়া নেটে অনেক বড় বড় প্রতিপক্ষ ঝলসে গেছে। কিন্তু চল্লিশ শতকে প্রেডেটরের এত কি কাজ?

চল্লিশ শতক। ভবিষ্যতের পৃথিবীতে মানবজাতির রোবটের উপর অতি নির্ভরশীলতা ভয়াবহ বিপর্যয়ের সম্ভাবনা সৃষ্টি করে। এদিকে এক্স-ও-ম্যানোয়ারের একটি হ্যালম্যাট যা প্রেডেটরের কালেকশনে ছিলো তা ঘটনাচক্রে ম্যাগনাসের হাতে চলে আসে। ম্যাগনাস, ১-এ নামক নিজের ইচ্ছাতে চলা রোবটের হাতে বেড়ে উঠেছিলেন। মানবজাতির রোবটদের হাতে ধ্বংস হ‌ওয়ার আশংকা থেকেই মানবতার রক্ষাকর্তা হিসেবে তাঁকে গড়ে তোলা হয়। রোবোটিকস এবং প্রাচীন মার্শাল আর্টসে দক্ষ ম্যাগনাস ৪০০১ সনে রোবট ফাইটার হিসেবে পরিচিত হন। খুব দ্রুত-ই রোবটিক আধিপত্যবাদের বিরুদ্ধে পৃথিবীর চ্যাম্পিয়নে পরিণত হন ম্যাগনাস।

পৃথিবীতে রোবটদের মধ্যে যেমন মানবতার পক্ষে-বিপক্ষে আছে ঠিক তেমনি মানুষজনের মধ্যেও চিরাচরিত ভালোমন্দ আছেন। জেনারেল হার্ট‌উইগ এবং তাঁর টিম এরকম-ই। ফ্রী উইলড রোবটের শিকারে বের হয়ে হার্ট‌উইগের টিম এক একটা খারাপ কাজ করে বেড়ান। এদিকে এক্স-ও হ্যালম্যাটের, যা প্রেডেটরের জন্যে ট্রফি, প্রেডেটর একদম মরিয়া হয়ে ম্যাগনাসকে ট্র্যাক করতে বেড়িয়ে পড়ে। এই এক হ্যালম্যাটের জন্যে অনেক রোবট এবং মানুষ একদম ধ্বংস হয়েছে, প্রেডেটরের হাতে। ম্যাগনাস এবং প্রেডেটরের এই ফাইটের মধ্যে জড়িয়ে পড়েন জেনারেল হার্ট‌উইগ এবং তাঁর তারছ্যাড়া দল। প্রেডেটরের শিকারের সংখ্যা বেড়ে যায়। একের পর এক নারকীয় ঘটনা শুরু হয়।

ম্যাগনাসকে অনুরোধ করা হয়েছে প্রেডেটরকে থামাতে। এই শিকারীকে থামাতে রোবট ফাইটার ম্যাগনাসকে করতে হবে খুন। প্রেডেটরকে খুন করতে ম্যাগনাস চায় না। কারণ ম্যাগনাসের মতে প্রেডেটরতো নিয়মনীতিতে আবদ্ধ তাঁর মতোই এক যোদ্ধা। কিন্তু সমস্যা হলো প্রেডেটর এক‌ইসাথে শিকারিও, এমন শিকারি যে ম্যাগনাসের দক্ষ আপনজনদের মেরে ফেলতে পারে। ম্যাগনাসকে কঠিন সিদ্ধান্ত নিতে হবে। হার্ট‌উইগ এবং সেই মাথাপাগলা টিমের এই যুদ্ধে জড়িয়ে পড়াটা ম্যাগনাসের জন্যে পরিস্থিতি আরো কঠিন করে তুলছে। প্রেডেটর তাঁর সমরাস্ত্র নিয়ে সুযোগ্য শিকার ম্যাগনাসকে পরাস্ত করতে হাজির হয়ে যায় তবে ম্যাগনাস তো নিজেই একটা অস্ত্র। কে জিতবে শেষ পর্যন্ত?

৯০ এর দশকে এত দুর্দান্ত কমিক্স আর্ট দেখে আমি আশ্চর্য হয়েছি। ব্যারী স্মীথ এবং লী উইকস অনেকটা সময়ের চেয়ে এগিয়ে গিয়ে দারুণ কমিক্স আর্ট উপহার দিয়েছেন। গল্পের টাইমলাইন শত হলেও ৪০০১ সন বলে কথা! জিম স্যুটার এবং জন অসট্রানডর দুই পর্বে একশনে পরিপূর্ণ, অত্যন্ত ফাস্ট পেইসড গল্প লিখেছেন। দুই কিংবদন্তির ব্যাটল বেশ উপভোগ্য। প্রেডেটর অবশ্য এখন আর ডার্ক হর্স কমিক্সের চরিত্র নয়, মার্ভেল কমিক্স প্রেডেটরের সাথে সাথে এলিয়েনের‌ও সত্ত্ব কিনে নিয়েছে আজ এক বছরের উপরে। দেখা যাক, মার্ভেল কমিক্স প্রেডেটর / এলিয়েনের সাথে কোন কোন চরিত্রের মারদাঙ্গা ফিউড সৃষ্টি করে।

As is self-explanatory from the cover we witness the facing off between Predators from the beloved film franchise as well as being something off a staple of Dark horse comics versus the likely lesser known Magnus robot who is given the following introduction in the comics: 'Magnus was raised from infancy by 1-A, one of the first free willed robots of 40th Century Earth. Concerned that manking's dependence upon robots might lead to disaster, 1-A trained Magnus to become the defender of humanity. Schooled in robotics as well as ancient martial arts, Magnus first became known as a robot fighter in the year 4001. Since that time he has quickly become Earth's champion against robotic domination. He known how to kick robots where they hurt.'

Obviously, there is a high intent of commercialism in any such venture, but does not stop the comic from breathing fresh air into the genre of famous comic book character vs another famous comic book character. The story is not poorly written by any means which resolves around the protagonist Magnus tracking down illegal bounty hunting activity of robots in the future only to become the target of the nefarious group doing the illegal preditorial hunting. By no means original but the dialogue remains less cliched than one might think as well as the art being the main attraction in this issue along with the second part of the story which gorgeous and full of that pre-computerized blandness that entered in full force as one moved into the 21 century.

Note: I don't like the star rating and as such I only rate books based upon one star or five stars corresponding to the in my opinion preferable rating system of thumbs up/down. This later rating system increases in my humble opinion the degree to which the reader is likely to engage with a review instead of merely glancing at the number of stars of a given book.)

I honestly don't know what went wrong here. This is kind of a no-brainer. The Predator is hunting in North-Am and Magnus has to stop him. There's a game of cat-and-mouse and later they fight. This stuff writes itself. Instead, John Ostrander decides to tell the clunkiest of stories revolving around some rich thrill-seekers who are hunting the mask of X-O which the Predator seems to have and Magnus gets caught in the middle and there's running around and shouting and a weird gender dynamic between everyone. I'll grant the concession that he was working off of a plot outline from publisher, Jim Shooter, which might explain things somewhat, but still...

This isn't rocket science, people. This is Predator.

And Lee Weeks is a masterful artist and storyteller but he's not working with the best foundation, here. I mean, you can't polish a turd no matter how hard you try. Ostrander just failed to rise above anything here and give Weeks something he could really sink his teeth into. It's just really marginal stuff, overall.

I'm kind of bummed out by it, too, because I was really excited to read this again since it's been something like 20 years since I last cracked open these pages.Turns out I should have left them closed.

Like Two Boxers In A Retro Future

Background was filled out fairly well, we get to learn who Predator and Magnus are without having read much of any lore or movies. "Futuristic" setting is more like what would've been envisioned in the 50's rather than anything recent, perhaps intentionally so. A lot of dialogue seemed hammy, characters one-dimensional, and the artwork minimal in carrying the action/story. Plot was alright, two prize fighters chasing after a trophy, but nothing innovative or creative here. The advertisements were cool to re-visit.

This is just a bit better than you might expect. The art is decent, the story more complex than it had a right to be, and the concept of Predator, aka. 80s Ultra-Violence, smashing into Golden Era pulp heroics is kinda inspired. A fun if ridiculous romp.

I read this book because it had such bad reviews, I had to see if it was really that bad. It was.

Predator, is an alien that hunts humans for sport.

Magnus Robot Fighter, is a dude who fights robots with martial arts. He lives in the 41st century in a society that resembles the Roman Empire. I had never heard of him before I heard of this book. I'm not sure why he fights robots. It seems to me that he was friends with some robots in this book.

Anyway, Predator fights Magnus. Magnus wins.

This book is very bad. I got it for 3 bucks and figured it was worth buying for that cheap.
