Alexandra has discovered the dark secret at the heart of the Confederation, survived a visit to the Lands Beyond, and been given seven years to live. Now she's determined to cheat her fate and see justice done. Standing in her way is a vengeful conspiracy and secrets even she is not prepared for. She'll need the help of her friends and loved ones, but even that may not be enough against the power of the Stars Above.
This book has a problem, it had a long tangent that developed the world and Alex , didn't feel relevant to the story. There was a lot of narrative sag here. But I like the fact that it embraced romance as a common thing that teenagers do.
HP barely concentrated on romance. Alex's romances are random and that is how they should be. I like that it is hard to ship Alex with anyone. Every relationship doesn't have to end in marriage.
The ending was unexpected and I liked the suprise. I also liked the interaction with the Stars Above, I've rarely seen a protag actually question mysterious higher powers. I won't say how it ends but I liked that interaction.
This series came extremely highly recommended by a trusted friend and as such it has yet to disappoint me. The type of writing is too plain for my taste, because all the narrator does is just describe what is happening as it happens, but the story that is being described elevates the whole work. Alex can be so frustrating but all I want is for her to succeed and the complexity of the plots she is put through never fails to impress. Love the ingenuity of the author, it’s so unfortunate they can’t, in the traditional sense, publish this series.
Lots more unfolds in this story. Characters get more pronounced and you get to see more of Wizarding America. The ending was heartbreaking so I hope Alexandra can figure that out in the next book. Can't wait to read more.
I loved the Character Developments for Alexandera and her friends on this one! Including her relationship with her sister. The series keeps on growing on me. And I think I've reached a point where i will not regret reaching this far with it.
Re-read: I think this is my favorite in the series. The Dinetah chapters are incredible.
4.5 stars~ Even when I don't necessarily like what Alex is doing, I have to admit the writing in this series only gets better and better. I am extremely invested in the plot and am sad that I'll have to wait for book six with everyone else after I read AQWA :( I thought Alex was slightly better about her decision making in this installment. I also find it hard to be mad at her when she consistently got the absolute shit beat out of her in this book and then got treated like garbage on top of that. She went through a lot and I'm curious to see how that'll affect her from here on out.
While I love reading Alexandra Quick, I found this book frustratingly repetitive. Alexandra keeps making the same trouble-causing mistakes that she has made previously, again and again and again and again and still hasn't learned from them. I hope that the fifth installment in the Alexandra Quick series turns out better than this one.
