María Rosalía Rita de Castro, better known as Rosalía de Castro (Santiago de Compostela, 24 February 1837 – Padrón, 15 July 1885), was a poet, novelist and Galician nationalist ("Probe Galicia, non debes / chamarte nunca española" ["Poor Galicia, you should never / called yourself Spanish"]).

Contemporary feminism has trumped her as a pioneer.
For her novel "Daugher of the Sea" (1859), she wrote in the prologue, "Because it is not yet allowed for women to write about what they feel and what they know".

A native of Santiago de Compostela in the Galicia nation or "historic nationality" of northwest Spain, she wrote in both Galician and Castilian.

Writing in the Galician language, after the Séculos Escuros (Dark Centuries), she became an important figure of the Galician romantic movement, known today as the Rexurdimento ("renaissance"), along with Manuel Curros Enríquez and Eduardo Pondal. Her poetry is marked by 'saudade', an almost ineffable combination of nostalgia, longing and melancholy.

She is considered the most important female poet of Spanish history, and, along with Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer, one of the best Romantic poets of Spain.

I read this book for my personal 52 Book Challenge 2023 under the category “Galician author and in Galican”. I read this book on the way back from Galicia and it hit the spot. I always read contemporary novels as this is what I relate to most personally but the way Rosalia was able to speak about suffering made me reflect on the lack of depthness and nuance that often exists in more recent releases. Rosalia allowed herself to look at pain and suffering and sit in it without question, without shame or direction in a way that may be 'too depressing' for some but felt liberating to me.

Rosalia's literary work centers itself around migration and it was healing to sit with her pain about a topic that is an essential thread in my life and the lives of the generations before me. I am proud of the rich, beautiful and green land that I come from and Rosalia's capacity to reflect on the beauty of it all throughout this collection of her literary work was a delight to let myself feel in connection with as I flew back to the far far away country I live in.

Tenía ganas de descubrir a Rosalía y me ha sorprendido gratamente.
Esta antología está muy bien seleccionada, muy bien traducida y muy bien explicada. Merece la pena.
Su poesía es cercana, intima y misteriosa y a la vez universal porque trata temas como la emigración y la pobreza, y también se revela contra las penalidades que les toca sufrir a las mujeres. Por ello sigue pareciendo bastante actual.
También me ha gustado que a pesar de la fama de ser triste y oscura, tiene algunos poemas con un humor muy cínico.

Los poemas de Cantares Gallegos y Follas Novas, salvo por algunas excepciones, no me llamaron demasiado la atención. Tal vez fue porque estaban escritos en gallego, y a veces tenía que releer los versos traducidos, aunque realmente esto me pareció bastante enriquecedor y entretenido. Sin embargo, ya en Follas Novas se detecta un salto con respecto a los Cantares, y ese salto es definitivo en En las Orillas del Sar. En los poemas seleccionados de esta obra es donde he podido apreciar más claramente la genialidad de Rosalía de Castro. Es verdad que, algunos poemas, aún siendo buenos, quizás no lleguen a geniales; pero no importa realmente porque, de repente, aparecen algunas estrofas tan increíbles, que compensan con creces todo lo demás. Uno tiene la sensación de que la autora se vaya creciendo con cada página, probablemente ganando madurez literaria con los años, para llegar al nivel de los más grandes.
Ahora solo me queda leer En las Orillas del Sar completa, pues me he quedado con ganas de leer más poemas de los seleccionados en esta antología.

Leí esta antología de una sola vez en un café. Yo me imaginaba que Rosalía de Castro era una poeta que pertenecía al modernismo hispánico, veo que realmente pertenece a la vindicación cultural de Galicia, de la lengua, las tradiciones y los paisajes gallegos. Ella vivió en una época en la que España quiso erradicar la lengua y la cultura gallega, en un afán de castellanización total, que llevó a la destrucción deliberada de muchos libros y documentos de la literatura y cultura gallegas. Más que a las grandes búsquedas estéticas de su época, Rosalía de Castro se abocó a reinventar esta tradición popular perdida.

Esta colección nunca me ha dejado indiferente y sin duda este es de mis favoritos. Poesía intensa, melancólica, llegadora, bella, desoladora y en un todo maravillosa.

Mi único "pero" es que se torna repetitiva en algunas ocasiones por la constante mención de alguna palabra especifica, aun así: RECOMENDADA.

Compré la versión bilingüe en su casa-museo de Padrón y es una obra maestra. Cuánto amor por Galicia y cuánto pesar por el pueblo gallego.
