FBI Agent Jake Carlisle is in deep trouble. He’s been shot and if he can’t get help fast, two lives will be lost—his and that of the young witness whom he’s sworn to protect. Desperate, on the run from both the police and the Russian Mafia, he kidnaps a nurse from a hospital parking lot.

ER nurse Samantha Edgars has been living in an emotional vacuum since the death of her daughter. Mentally and physically exhausted following a difficult shift, she’s suddenly jolted from her stupor when she’s bound and gagged, then tossed into the back of her car. Forced to tend a bleeding FBI agent and his injured witness, she’s terrified. But Samantha quickly learns the rogue agent and orphaned boy need more than just her professional skills. Danger is bearing down on them, and she must learn to trust Jake—and her heart— if they’re all going to survive.

Oh… wow.

This was bad. So bad I actually laughed out loud.

At 5% the TSTL heroine catches her kidnapper’s masculine scent and sighs when her cheek accidentally grazes against his stubble a few minutes after she was knocked unconscious and kidnapped in a brutal way.

Meanwhile, her kidnapper has to fight the urge to caress her cheek. He groans when she pulls her lower lip between her teeth while she cleans his gunshot wound with the medical equipment she luckily forgot to take out from her pocket after her night shift in the hospital where she works. *snort*

I’m not gonna list all the nonsense from this book because it would take pages and pages to write it all down.

Credibility?

Zero.

Depth and character development?

Extremely low.

Suspense?

Laughable.

Romance and sex scenes?

Barf.

If you want to read on-the-run trope where TSTL characters have time for cheap romance and EVERY freaking thing except running and fearing for their lives, knock yourselves out.

I’m out.

At the start of this book, I honestly didn't think I would finish it. In fact, I had no intention of continuing when the heroine's body was tingling and her bits pulsing when her kidnapper brushed against her. Further on, I got it. But no way could I imagine any woman who is grabbed and kidnapped by an unknown male throbbing with need! Most would be terrified. But hey, this is fiction.

So, what happened? My kindle wouldn't connect, and I couldn't download the next book I wanted to read, so I re-opened this one read a few pages, put it up. Same thing the next night, and, hello, before I knew it, I was hooked. The silly lusting stopped, and when she did start having feelings for him again, it was believable.

Rough start aside, this was a superb story.

Tropes: MF, Romantic suspense, love-thy-capture, there's a child, good guys gone bad.

Kidnapped was the story of cookie cutter villains chasing a TSTL Mary Sue and her hunky but pretty lame undercover FBI agent/kidnapper.

I mean, at one point he says: "I haven't figured out where you hid the phone but somehow you called them to come and rescue you". She literally has one small bag with her plus the clothes on her back. I'm gonna need you to try a little harder here, Jake.

The heroine, Samantha was a nurse but didn't seem to know a whole lot about nursing. She also wanted use her credit card and called her brothers for a lil' chat, even though the call could have been traced. But it's okay, she didn't put them in danger because the baddies were too busy talking about their comrades, babushkas and motherland.

And later we get this gem:

“Sami?” Nicky’s small voice penetrated the mist of emotions still swirling around her. “Why do you cry, Sami?”
She fought to smile reassuringly at him. “I think I’m just a little tired, Nicky. Women sometimes cry when they get that way.”

It's free. There is that.

Not much else. I didn't reach 20% as my iota of credibility went in flame pretty easily. Plus, you could say in the first pages this book wasn't interested in real suspense (I don't think there's much research there) nor romance.
He kipnaps her, bodily harms her and threatens her with rape. We might know as a reader he's a good guy (because of blurb). But she doesn't. So when in those first 20% she lusts after him heavily I knew romance wasn't the name of the game.

I haven't lost a child, but I'm not sure agreeing to go with a madman that kidnaps you and may have tortured a child is a good way to save the child. Mind you, may be I'm the anormal one....

I wonder if it's self pub.

Fantastic action-suspense romance. Nice amount of steam to balance out all the bad guy action!
I can't wait to read more from this author.

Good fast paced mystery. A little heavy on the sex scenes. But it did have a satisfying ending.

How was this ever published, let alone made into an audio?

It's got so many plot holes and sheer ridiculousness (and not in a good way).

I'm going against my usual rule of 2⭐ because I finished it. It gets 1⭐ because I laughed so hard at the end.

Sadly for the rest of the Edgars family, I won't be listening to their tales.

In this book I cried, I laughed, I sat on the edge of my seat holding my breath through the action scenes. This story really touched me. It was filled with love and passion.

Jake is an undercover FBI agent. He saved Nicky, who is a young boy who witnessed a murder. Nicky is in need of medical care. Jake knows he can’t take the little boy to the hospital because it would blow his cover. He kidnapped Samantha a nurse that is leaving the hospital. Samantha gives both Jake, and Nicky the medical attention they need to save their lives. The gang that came after Jake and Nicky do not intend for them to live. They find out about Samantha, so her life is now endangered. Together Jake and Samantha learn to trust one another. The do save each other’s life’s a few times, and together they save Nicky’s life. Samantha has big brothers that made sure she knew how to drive in extreme situations. She uses her driving skills like a pro to avoid the gang that is after them. This is not the typical book that the heroin is weak and needs help. Jake is an alpha male, don’t get me wrong, but together the Hero, and Heroin work well together as a team.

Sample from Chapter 10 The front door crashed open. Heavy footsteps sounded on the main room’s wooden floor. He swung one leg over the window frame, then the other, holding onto the ledge for one moment before dropping to the ground. In that one moment, the bedroom door was riddled with bullets. Shattered glass peppered Jake. Pain seared through his left arm and the right side of his head as he released the window and dropped to his feet.

This one was good up until about 27 % when the h finds out that her kidnapper is really with the FBI and then it takes a dump. The writting loses what it had going, the h turns into a "quirky side kick" and it just doesn't work for me.

I wasn't exactly sure what I was going to get with this one when I picked it up, but the blurb grabbed me, and I ended up really enjoying it. It was evenly divided as a thriller and a romance, and I found myself drawn to both, but I think that is mainly due to the co-parenting happening within the story, because if little Nicky hadn't been there, I'm not sure I would have stayed as entertained. And while I loved this book, I'm also not sure if I'll continue the series, as the siblings of Sammy didn't really draw me in. But if there were ever more books written about Jake, Sammy and Nicky, I'd be all over them!

A little confusing at times, and the author should have done a little more homework when it comes to FBI policy/procedure, but overall a good book.

So yeah .. this happened ..
I wanted to read a romantic suspense to keep me at the edge of my seat and to feel for the characters so deep that I want to heart my heart breaking .. sadly this book provided nothing of my expectations, the story is so rushed and the chemistry is so weird and everything was just a jumble mess!
So the story is about Jake who is an FBI agent trying to rescue a kid from the mafia and one day he got shot and he is forced to kidnap a nurse " Samantha" to patch him up, and the story picks up from there
The relationship screams Stockholm Syndrome, and I don't like that through every cruel thing Jake did we will have to forgive him because he is the main love interest in the story .. hope the next book is better

LoveIt
This wasn’t just your typical romantic suspense. Yes, we have man that kidnaps woman and eventually they fall for each other but it also takes us through the grief and healing of the heroine of a past traumatic loss in her life.

Undercover FBI agent Jake Carlisle has been shot and his nine year old Russian witness has been stabbed and tortured. He needs help for them both fast and that way happens to be kidnapping a nurse leaving her shift from the hospital.

Samantha Edgars is tired after her shift. But we don’t know to the extent of how tired she is until during flashbacks of her life and the personal loss she went through is told to us. The author chose for only us to know most of these details which explained why she felt so strongly in helping the young boy.

As the hunt for who set up Jake and the danger continues the three of them all form a close bond. All of them needed each other and it was great to watch it unfold.

Really not sure what to rate this. Decent chick-lit with bad guys and a small boy, cops and FBI etc etc etc. Could be three stars, but... Two stars then. There were a lot of enjoyable aspects to this, but deep down I kept thinking to myself.. nope. It pushed the boundaries of belief just that bit too far for me to be able to enjoy it.

The first book in Suzanne Ferrell's Edgars Family series. FBI Agent Jake Carlisle kidnaps ER nurse Samantha Edgars to help nurse his young injured witness, Nicky. He can't go to the police. There is a traitor somewhere and now the public believes Jake is the bad guy. Samantha has her issues with the loss of her daughter but she finds a new reason to keep going in Jake and Nicky.

Began pretty strong for me but lagged a little. It was fairly predictable but that wasn't really a problem. The characters were decent enough and the story moved nicely along. I think I will continue the series because I did enjoy the brothers.

This was the first time I have read a book by this author and I can say it won't be the last. The was exciting from page one and had me hooked instantly. It had a good mystery, danger, action, romance and wonderful characters. I will be continuing up with the remainder of this series. Narrator did a great job!

Overall I really enjoyed the book, I thought the characters were done pretty well and the plot was interesting. Nicky was absolutely adorable!

What I did have problems with in the book was the relationship between Samantha and Jake. Did they have chemistry? For sure they did. But Jake said some horrible things to her that I just couldn’t wrap my head around her forgiving him that fast or falling in love that quickly. Both in the beginning, after he kidnaps her and chokes her, effectively knocking her unconscious. Then threatens her with a knife. Gets pissed at her for trying to escape. And kisses her while she thinks he might actually hurt/kill her. Clearly we’ve got ourselves a regular Casanova over here.

description

And even later on he makes that stupid crack about her daughter being dead. Can someone say heartless?! I would have lost it. The last thing that kind of ruined their relationship for me was when she called her brother to get information on the Russians. They show up at the cabin and he immediately thinks she turned against him. Queue sarcastic remarks and death glares in 3, 2, 1...

description

After all of this, Samantha’s just thinking “well I’ll earn back his trust” or forgiving him his wrongdoings almost immediately saying it’s fine and he’s right. What is wrong with you, woman??

description

Anyways, the epilogue was actually pretty sweet (if a little unrealistic) and the ending wasn’t bad. I’m excited to see how the rest of the books in this series go.

This is my first time reading anything by Suzanne Ferrell and it won’t be the last. The title, book cover, and the synopsis pulled me in. The storyline kept me engaged from start to finish and the twists and turns made for a wonderful story of romance, danger, and suspense.

Meet Jake Carlisle, an undercover FBI agent on the run with Nicky, a nine-year-old Russian kid with a photographic and phonographic memory whom he saved from the Kreshnin brothers (Russian mafia). Both are injured and in need of medical attention and shelter before the Kreshnins get a hold of Nicky who witnessed a murder and has details that could put them away. Not wanting to risk going inside a hospital and someone reporting their injuries to the police, Jake decides to kidnap someone (preferably a nurse or a doctor) who could help them.

Lucky for Jake he kidnaps Samantha Edgars, a feisty nurse who possesses a heart big enough to help and eventually come to care and love both Jake and Nicky under grave circumstances. Also, lucky for Jake, Samantha has three brothers (two are police officers) who along with Jake’s old partner, Doyle comes up with a plan to expose the Kreshnins and get them arrested. At the end, they are also able to figure out the mystery inside man who has helped the Kreshnins stay under the police radar to conduct their illegal business.

Overall, I enjoyed the pacing of the novel, the character development, motivation, dialogue and suspense. The romance heated up between Jake and Samantha being in close quarters as they were hiding out and trying to figure out their next move. The author did a great job of showing Samantha overcoming her depression from recently losing her daughter to leukemia. Her resourcefulness made her a great companion for Jake and someone he could rely on. A very good read and one I would recommend!

Some of my favorite lines:

“Okay, what do I know about Jake?” Sami spoke aloud, hoping to keep the crazy voice from answering her. “First, he’s in trouble up to his sexy blue eyes. Second, he cares very much about what happens to Nicky. Nicky is Russian. Third, Jake knows police weapons and procedure.

Either he’s a rogue cop, ex-military or maybe even a federal agent. From his clothes, I’d guess undercover at least. Fourth, he’s convinced the police are out to get him.”

Considering he had a bullet hole in his shoulder, the man is probably right.

Excellent story

I loved this romantic suspense tale of the good guy trying to save the life of a targeted child and the feisty woman he kidnaps to help him. Once Sami understands how much Jake needs her help with Nicky she stops trying to escape and they work together to bring down the gang threatening them. Good action, a few twists, lessons learned and a happy ending for the 3 of them. Satisfying read.

Read this as I couldn't sleep and it was free and didn't require a lot of focus. I won't rate it as I find most romance books cringe so my opinion probably isn't helpful :p In this book, undercover FBI agent turned fugitive Jake Something forces ER nurse Samantha Something to save the life of his star witness until he can expose the corruption which has forced them on the run. They fall in love immediately. The baddies are Russian. Everything happens exactly as you would imagine. But sometimes that's what you need at 3am ;)

Holy repetitiveness Batman. It's just page after page of the same thoughts, which is really unfortunate since the characters are likable and the plot was interesting.

Trigger warning:

I don’t really get the low reviews on this one. It’s pretty much on par with every other romantic suspense book that I’ve read. And it’s a lot better than some others with higher reviews. I think maybe some people who don’t read the genre got in here and were expecting some masterpiece of fiction.

I feel like as a reader you always need to take the romance genre with a grain of salt especially when it comes to suspense or crime novels. Of course there are unrealistic aspects to the story. Of course the romance seems fast (especially in an on-the-run trope). Of course there are going to be cheesy moments. But we all should know this going in, unless you’re brand new to adult romance.

Is this story a 5 star for me? No. But does it deserve a 1? Definitely not. If you’re a fan of the genre I suggest not letting the negative reviews on this one turn you off (i almost skipped because of negative reviews).

It was an enjoyable enough story and is free on audible plus. I’ll be listening to the next one.
