This book was both good and bad. It was both believable and unbelievable. It was not at all what I expected. In all honesty, though it was well written, I can't say that I enjoyed this book.
SPOILER ALERT: I enjoyed reading about the main character's recovery from the pain of spousal abuse. It was very realistic and encouraging. It was great to read about the heroine's recovery, and I felt that it could be encouraging for other abused women to read...
Then the woman's ex husband was released from prison, where he had finished serving a five year term for abusing her, and the two formed a friendship. Of course, the husband was completely reformed, and had become a Christian the night he was arrested, five years earlier. It turns out, the two had never stopped loving each other, so they were reunited.
I'm a Christian, and I know that God changes heart's, but it usually isn't as simple as this book made it seem. When I think of the many abused women, who return to their abusive spouses, hoping that this time, he's really changed, I am deeply troubled by this book.
While some abusers do turn to the Lord and change their lives for the better, most don't. If you are an abused spouse, beware, and be wise, before returning to live with your abusive spouse. If he has truly changed, he will be willing to seek counsel, and to find an accountability partner. Real life doesn't always give us the happy ever after ending that we would all like to have.
