When Clay is lamenting his boring life, Joseph comes by needing his help and they start a relationship that is certainly not short on excitement.
Clay is highly skilled but you couldn't tell it from his dead end job. Then Joseph comes in late one night needing his help and it begins. They realize right away that they are interested in a relationship. What they are not ready for is all the danger and excitement that follows. They stand together, and handle everything that comes their way. As they face the unexpected, they find that as a unit they are strong and their bond is real. They come from different worlds and then there's the age thing. Maybe their differences aren't so important after all.
I've liked a lot of AKM MIles' books in the past. She is one of my go-to read it and weep authors when I'm in the mood for goopy sweetness and tearjerker kids.
"Not So Different"? - not so much.
For an almost completely plotless book in which nothing of note actually happens between the two MCs other than they meet and have dinner, they certainly do get bizarrely threatened with gruesome impending death over and over and over again.
The first instance arguably could be part of the 'plot', but the second is ludicrous, and the third is the boulder that broke the camel's back.
I only give one star reviews to books that I hate with a passion that verges on violence. Not So Different barely escapes that by being mostly benign. Otherwise, this one moment would have had me setting something on fire.
”For shit’s sake? I’ve heard for God’s sake, for heaven’s sake, for pity’s sake, even For Gom’s Sake, but that’s a book. I’ve got to say I’ve never heard ‘for shit’s sake.”’ Clay couldn’t help it. He was a smartass.”
Clay Young is bored out of his mind. He has a degree in Computer Science, but the only job he can find is Tech Support at a low-end computer chain store. One night just before closing, a customer comes in with a urgent problem. Realtor Joeseph Danshell has a VERY important report to submit and can’t figure out why it won’t go through. After Clay helps get the report submitted before the deadline, Joseph takes Clay to dinner at a nice restaurant as thanks for his help. Even though the two men are from different worlds and there’s a nine-year age difference, they find they both want the same thing-a relationship with each other. They know that their bond is real and forever after they make it through more excitement and danger than they could ever imagine.
Not So Different by AKM Miles is both a character and a plot driven story with characters that are complex, believable, and who could be your next door neighbors. The author takes an average storyline about how opposites attract, and the obstacles they face, and gives it a very unique and original twist. The story pulled me in from the beginning and kept me turning the page to see what was going to happen next! The sex is implied, but the story is so fantastic that you don’t miss it at all. The author’s writing style is quirky, concise, and very original, deftly weaving a beautiful love story and nail-biting action into a fascinating tale that has a HEA ending that I really enjoyed reading. If you want a story that is anything but boring or average, then you definitely should check out this book.
This… Ah god. It was so calm (despite gunmen and dangerous animals) that I almost drifted off several times. Everything’s just peachy perfect. And that perfection has to be commented on at length. Now that I think about it, this reminded me a little of Lyssa Samuels’ stuff. Minus alien pregnancies and so forth. Or maybe only in that super-perfection sense.
To be honest, it was a bit too much, especially coupled with all the planning and speechifying. It’s awkward when the characters analyze every stage of their relationship to death before proceeding (as planned) to the next one.
And the sex. For one thing I find it somewhat hard to believe that two healthy, smitten, fairly young men hold off sex so long. More strangely, though, from a narrative point of view, all the sexual stuff – despite the aforementioned planning and discussions – is relegated to summary. I don’t get a sense of either tension or passion between these two guys. Just huge amounts of security seeking (and finding) in each other. So if that’s your thing, this may be a good choice to read. As a romance it felt rather too stilted and constructed too me, way too perfectionalised.
This was actually a great read but i'm not too sure why A.K.M Miles nowadays does not like to describe their lovemaking.. Hmmmm.. Like I've said in the previous book if I had a c*** this book is definitely c***blocking me..
