Hajime No Ippo: First Step

Holding the JBC Featherweight championship belt, Ippo is the man at the top that everybody has their sights on - especially other champions with dreams of holding two belts. Kazuki Sanada is the five-time defending Junior Featherweight who’s looking to move up a class and use his surgical precision to dismantle the fresh champion Ippo Makunouchi!

While this wasn’t my favorite arc, this is still continued excellence from this series. Everything from the announcement of the fight to the aftermath is solid.

Fight camp is solid. Sanada’s coach, Hama Dankichi, is another boxer-turned-trainer that Coach Genji has shared the ring with. Love getting tidbits of Coach’s past. It’s always coupled with the wisdom of a grizzled old boxer and a man that has lived through the reformation of post-WWII Japan, which I appreciate especially. The historical nods are a nice touch. Also has trademark Kamogawa Gym shenanigans. Kumi romance subplot sucks though.

Sanada is another neat character. He’s not as lovable as his predecessors, but interesting nevertheless. His doctoral studies and intellect separate him from the usual fare of blue collar boxers Ippo is pitted against.

The match is very good - not great. Still praising! It just shows the bar that HNI sets in terms of its fighting. The grit and gusto is there, and the fighting style of Sanada is new enough to keep it exciting. It relies a bit too much on the “science” of boxing that feels… out of place. Nevertheless the bout has its highs and lows and still had me pumping my fists.

Side note: I love that each bout gets a sick poster. So authentic.

Really love Hajime no ippo!! Easily my favorite sports manga/anime, it’s a lot more than just the boxing! Great character development and story outside the sports part!😁👌🥊🥊❤️
