LX (or Alex for us Earthlings) is a Navigator. On a routine exploration mission that shouldn't have taken more than a few months, an incident propels his spaceship light-years away from his destination, leaving him stranded on the third planet from a star called Sol.
The laws of survival are strict; he must not fraternize with the natives. However, an encounter with Mellie changes everything. She has speed and strength unknown to Earthlings yet strangely similar to his own species. This new discovery compels him to learn more about her and those who call themselves vampires. For her, he will break rules, his people's rules, until there is no turning back.
Meanwhile, mysterious storms are devastating cities. When they learn of their origin and the humans fail to see the threat, he, and his new friends, might be their only chance, but to save them and the one he loves, he may have to break his primary Oath: the vow never to take a life.
Parental Advisory: Some language and sexual content.
After she encountered strange lights in the sky, GG Atcheson became obsessed with extra-terrestrial life. She often daydreams about possible life in the universe. When she's not stargazing, she reads, or plays MMORPG on the computer. GG is a fighter and a cancer survivor.
OKAY! I've been thinking I need to branch into scifi more since my flight of fancy tend to be more fantastical/horrific ones. I'm intrigued by a non-human POV, so I'm ready to get my Twilight Zone on and head for The Outer Limits.
Per usual, I'm not interested in spoiling anything for readers coming in. LOTS is happening in this, though. I wouldn't have thought paranormal and extraterrestrials would blend well as a genre but it manages and does so in a way that keeps things fun and make it all really feel extra "fish out of water".
Also, I do like the cover. Very pretty and professional :D
I really enjoyed this book. So much so, in fact, that this review is delayed because I went right on to reading the next one!
I loved the concept in this book. An alien, LX (known to we humans as Alex) crash lands on Earth and immediately encounters what he thinks is a new species of human… a vampire. And she happens to be a gorgeous female who is immediately attracted to him (and vice versa). Naturally, their relationship develops throughout the book.
Now, of course, when humans discover that an alien has crash-landed, they do what, unfortunately, I think humans would do, and they lock him up and torture him for information, etc. Little do the humans know what Alex can do and the crisis the humans will later face. The real question is: Will Alex help them after their treatment of him?
I picked up this book because the concept sounded interesting… humans and vampires and an alien… with a love story? I will admit now that I was a little worried that the book would not live up to the blurb. It did. It was wonderfully done.
The plot had plenty to keep me turning pages and the characters were very well developed. I especially (of course) love LX. What a guy, er… alien.
I recommend this book to anyone interested in fun, up-beat (even with what Alex had to go through) science fiction.
A mysterious object causes LX to crash land on Earth. He can survive for while living on water, until he can repair the damage to his ship. He is not supposed to interact or hurt humans. While checking his surroundings he runs into another creature living on the fringes of society and finds her to be a species he's never studied. He learns she is a vampire and that's where the adventure begins. Atcheson writes the entire book through Alex's eyes and we see both the vampires and humans based on how they treat him. Kind, curious, and loath to make trouble, Alex is confronted by new challenges coupled with his growing love for Mellie. The author's descriptions of Alex's abilities are spot on. Atcheson creates both a likable and credible alien whose crash landing impacts both Earth and himself in more ways than he could possibly realize.
This is a massively overdue read/review, and I’d like to take a chance to extend my sincere apologies to GG Atcheson for the delay.
World Building Reading through the story, there were many times I felt as if I were walking through the tale, rather than just picking up the words from a page. In between those times, I was lost in admiration for the rich tapestry GG wove with the blend of natural and medical facility. Part of the world she builds up one delightful layer at a time is the physical world, another part is the political world, and yet another part is the internal world. Each layer added is a delightful addition to the ones that come before, and add a vibrant texture for the story to exist within. Character Development From the first words, the characters begin to develop into their own people. There are a few places where things become a touch too stilted for the main character, but that is more from a well developed lack of knowledge how English is spoken in the modern world than a fault in the writing. GG does a wonderful job presenting Alex’ trouble with modern English without making the story hard to follow. The growth of the characters has a natural ebb and flow, with some of the support cast providing their own humor relief. Even with the “other side” there’s a nice organic growth, though the motivations aren’t quite as clearly defined (and considering the little you DO learn about them, I’m not sure I’d WANT to have those motivations more defined.)There’s also a few unexpected twists and quirks to the development as well. Won’t say too much more, or I’d likely wind up adding in spoilers – can’t have that, now, can we? Pacing The pace of the story is spot on. Even with the touch of fantasy included (it can also be explained as ESP if you just can’t stand the thought of fantasy in a sci-fi book) the organic feel to the story keeps the pages turning and the interest high. Personally, I’m looking forward to reading more of Ms. Atcheson’s work, but I’m going to have to remember to start earlier in the evening – these aren’t long (for me), but if I don’t get an early start, I wind up being up much too late because I can’t put them down.
I know this was not the author's intent, but I found this book, or at least the genre fluidity (I may have just coined a term) to be quite humorous. I think her intent was simply to write a story that is exciting and engaging, and in that she succeeded. But let's count the potential genres: alien sci fi/fantasy; wizard fantasy (the alien is also a wizard of some kind); vampire fantasy; romance (between the alien wizard and the perpetually hot vampire chick!); military thriller; and a few more that I am probably missing. It seems that some authors get just the slightest bit precious about their genres, but GG Atcheson is having none of it; she wrote the story she wanted, and for that I name her Genre Buster Extraordinaire. Looking forward to the next installment!
I was unable to complete this book. I have chosen to delete my rating because it's my own fault; these things would have been obvious to me if I had looked at the sample, and I see no reason to harm the author with my own mistake. However, my comments may prove helpful to others.
The subject matter seemed interesting and I was curious to see where the story went, but, unfortunately, several stylistic concerns kept me from getting past the first few pages. I will try to illustrate those concerns below, so you can determine for yourself whether or not my concerns will affect your enjoyment of the story.
Here we go.
1: There is misuse of punctuation. It's not terrible, mostly, but there are places where commas are misplaced, spaced a word before or after I would expect them to be used. As someone who prides himself on proper use of punctuation and grammar, this was highly distracting.
2: There was a lot of tell. A lot, lot, LOT of telling. The protagonist spends the first several pages describing reasons and situations...by the time I turned away from the book, the story had not yet begun, about ten pages in. This was too long for me to read an info-dump.
3: The protagonist breaks the fourth wall. This is what really drove me crazy, and I wouldn't have known that it would until I tried it...but the MC was, in several places, actually talking to *me*, the reader. This destroyed any nascent verisimilitude that was developing, even despite the first two issues. I couldn't put myself in the story because it felt like the story was talking to me.
In summary, this style of writing doesn't suit my reading style. I encourage other potential readers to check out the sample first, so that he/she can determine if these issues are a problem for him/her.
What a ride! Following LX from the moment his ship crash landed in the forest through everything he experienced after was a thrill. I loved so many things about this character. I loved his connection with nature, the abilities he had, and his temperament. I loved that he was a non-violent alien who tried very hard not to disturb those whose lives he touched while he was sent to explore our planet. This alone would have been an intriguing and exciting premise for a book, but Atcheson took it further. Much further. Vampires? Check. Romance? Check. Government conspiracy? Check. Apocalyptic threat? Check.
The book meanders through the plot in a very realistic fashion, allowing the reader to discover things as Alex does. This gives the reader a sense of peace and security, which is often followed by an abrupt punch of action and suspense. This results in a page-turning roller coaster of emotions.
I could go on and on about what I loved about this book, but I don't want to take away your reading time. If you're on the fence about reading Fate, get off it (yes, Alex, that's a figure of speech), and go read it now. You won't be disappointed.
Obviously, being the author of this book means I've read it, (and more than once), but I've become too fond of Alex to rate his story objectively. When you live with your characters in your head for so many years, it becomes almost impossible to feel anything but positive things about them. However, realistically, nothing is perfect, not Alex, and certainly not his narrative, but I hope you will give him a chance and see for yourself. Your opinion would be greatly appreciated.
By the way, this might be the first of a series, but it can be read as a stand-alone. You may not get every single answer by the end of the book as I left some clues here and there to pique your curiosity for the sequel but I promise it will not end with a huge cliffhanger. The epilogue and the two free chapters from the sequel 'The Legacy: Destiny' will take care of any you may have.
Who would have thought a story about an extra-terrestrial being and a group of vampires would work? Not only does it work, but it elicits so many emotions. It is told by LX (better known as Alex), who is from another planet. This way you get to see what he thinks is different about us earthlings, which I found interesting and humorous. Mellie, the vampire who instantly falls for him, is a loving, loyal, and protective character. Their romance is very sweet and genuine, filled with happiness, angst, and sadness. It's like any romance between two humans. A lot happens in this story, both good and bad. One of my favorite characters is Bernie. She is not a main character, but I found her to be kind and comforting. I'm routing for Alex and Mellie to be together. Fate ends with a cliffhanger, so I will have to read Destiny to see what happens next.
The Legacy: Fate is a most enjoyable read. The author made the choice to have the main character, LX (Alex), an alien, tell the story from his point-of-view. This was nothing short of genius. From Alex’s eyes, one can easily see the differences between humans and aliens and also can relate to the similarities that both species share. Alex is an extraordinary being, but he’s not perfect nor is he immune to the same issues that normal humans encounter, such as love. A chance meeting of Mellie, a different sort of extraordinary being, changes Alex’s original plan, and he soon finds himself tangled in love, mixed up with the government, and still trying to be the hero that he naturally is. Following Alex on his journey is easy because he is so likeable, yet he always manages to surprise you. G.G. Atcheson has a knack for showing the complexities in every character. We see this with Alex when he struggles with obtaining what he wants as he fulfills the duties expected of his kind. Mellie, too, is lost in a struggle between good and bad and what is considered natural behavior of her own species. This internal dichotomy shows itself many times, even with the minor characters, whose inner battles leave the reader guessing how their choices will affect Alex. For anyone who loves to read heroic stories, this book is for them. It is original and witty with the addition of a sweet love story.
What an amazing concept! An alien lands on earth, which he has visited many times before, and discovers a new breed of human being that seems to have some pretty incredible abilities. In an attempt to learn more about them, he poses as one of them until he is found out. Falling in love with one of them, he learns that they are called vampires, but before he can find out much more, he and several of them are captured by the government and subjected to some torturous testing.
As if this isn't hard enough, LX (or Alex, as he chooses to call himself) learns that the planet is being invaded by a different hostile alien race. Will he be able to convince the government to let him go? Even if he does, will the vampires and the government work with him to defeat the invading forces? It is an action packed story that sucks you in and has you anxious to see the next exciting page.
Ms. Atcheson creates a great story that is fresh and exciting. I look forward to reading the second installment of this series to see where she intends to take us next. Highly recommended!
The words Vampires and Aliens in a review first caught my eye.
Like, yeah!
I didn't even read the blurb and jumped right in to experience the plot without any expectations.
This book took me by complete surprise. It has action, neat space ships, world peril and bad scientists. And vampires AND aliens (can't ask for more!) Plus romance, soldiers, really bad aliens and magic.
Plus it's a super fun story with lots of humour, a good guy who puts everything into doing the right thing and a sweet ending that had me saying yes!
Who doesn't love sex crazed alien vampires with no regard for the human cattle that they exploit and objectify to satisfy their savage, primal, carnal lusts? Oh and there's cool f*cking super powers and explosions and some kind of shadow government stuff that forms the spine of a wicked umbrella of skeletal arcs within the book.
Put Twilight down and pick this series up instead, because there's nothing sparkly over here, just bad asses doing bad ass things.
A thoroughly enjoyable read. Alex is an alien pilot who has crashed on U.S. soil. He hides his spacecraft and scouts out the area. Here he meets Mellie who for some reason doesn't smell like other humans and was able to sneak up on him. Alex eventually learns that she is a vampire. Though Alex left behind a pregnant wife and two daughters, he is falling in love with the vampire and tries to help her rescue a friend. But though the rescue was successful, Alex is betrayed by Mellie's ex-lover and is taken captive by a government sanctioned research facility. Both the main characters are well drawn along with a host of secondary characters. The story was exciting with plenty of action and some twists along the way. Well written engaging story and highly recommended science-fantasy.

As a side-note, Fate has been professionally edited and re-published (09/2016). If you have an older version, please check with Amazon kindle for a new up-load. Thank you.
I was immediately entranced by the uniqueness of the plot. I've never read a book that matched up aliens and vampires. Though once you start reading it, it seems to make sense! It stands to reason that if aliens exist, vampires very well might exist too!
I enjoyed seeing our world through Alex's eyes. He doesn't get our sayings and our mannerisms, but desperately tries to adapt and blend in.
I struggled with the dialogue at times, but I understood the purpose for making Alex's words awkward. He's not native to the language.
I look forward to reading the next segment of Alex's story!
A book with Aliens, Vampires, and Humans. A little far fetched you might think, but G.G. Atcheson ties them together nicely!
I mostly enjoyed this book, especially the main character Alex (the alien) . Mellie I could take or leave! She wasn't a well rounded character to me, especially as important as she is supposed to be to Alex.
A little more professional editing would have been nice, for spelling and grammatical errors.
Not what I expected, but I enjoyed it. Innovative use of vampires and aliens together. Especially love the main character's struggle with contractions. Willn't should be in the dictionary!
A creative intertwining of Starman with a bunch of Vampire the Masquerade characters. The protagonist is quirky, entertainingly naïve while also tremendously more developed than the people he meets on his accidental visit to our world. It's a fast paced read with humor, tension, pain and romance.

Rating 7 of 10
Aliens and vampires in one book. That definitely got my attention. It's not something we see often. Or more likely ever. LX is a very likable character. I liked the fact that he is curious and strong willed but I didn't liked how naive he actually is. Especially for a 4 hundred years old alien, who have studied humans before. Hasn't he had a training what to do if he is captured on an alien planet? Like not showing any abilities that are not ordinary for the locals? What he did was to just make them more curious and their want to study him became bigger. Else said he showed zero knowledge about human psychology, even if he knew a thing or two about history. I respected his "kill no one" rule thought but his believe that he can convince the people who captured him and tortured him to attack the alien ship was pretty naive too, especially after he saw that they were actually trying to talk with the invaders. I can't say I liked or disliked Mellie. She isn't really bad but a bit too much of a drama queen for my taste. I'll admit that even after the bad introduction, I liked Stan. He is a loyal friend and I think that he actually have some brain in his head. I want to see more of him in the future books. I also want to see more about LX's father and what he suspects is done to him and his son. I hope we see more of the General too. He seems to be a good man and also have a more open mind.
The book opens more questions than it gives answers, but as a first in a series I guess that's the point - to pick our interest to read the next books. I rarely like a first point of view, but Alex's narration was intriguing. I would really like to see what happens next.

Vampires and aliens? Sign me up! I have always been a big vampire fan and have read countless books about them. I have never been a big alien fan though so that part was exciting and fairly new for me. I went into this book really curious at what I would find with bringing these two together.
Alex is an alien that has crash landed on earth and has no option but to stay here until he can fix his ship. He ends up meeting a girl that takes him under her wing. She is a vampire and mistakenly believes that Alex is one as well. From here we get a crazy adventure full of twist and turns that make for a very interesting ride.
For the most part I felt like we did get to know Alex very well. He was likable for the most part, but was hard to relate to sometimes because he seemed really self righteous. I understand that he was from a different planet that had different ideas, but even another one of the characters in the books makes a comment about he can be pretty closed minded.
I really wish the we could have gotten to get to know Mellie a little bit better. I feel like their time together always felt rushed. I would have liked for the author to write more about the time together that they spent in the beginning of the book. Because of the circumstances in the story I felt that Mellie's character was a bit flat. I was happy that there was a little part of the book that was in her POV because just from that small snippet I felt like I got to know so much more about her. I am really hoping that we can get more of her in the following installments.
I really enjoyed the story and the ending definitely left me wanting more!!! I can't wait to read the next installment in the series.
Reading over the synopsis for this book, a bad joke came to mind – So an alien and a vampire walk into a bar..... I was struck with the thought, “How is Atcheson going to pull this off?” Right then, I knew I had to find out.
The story introduces us to the Alex, an alien that crash lands in the US. From his POV, we learn about his life on his home planet, his mission directives and rules of engagement, as well as meeting a few colorful characters; including Mellie, the vampire that Alex meets and mistakes him for one of her own kind. I don't do spoilers in reviews, so I'll sum up by saying that this story takes us many directions and has a couple of twists that I did not- didn't expect.
On the whole, I liked this story. I was worried, in the beginning, that it was too far-fetched even for my tastes. Atcheson has managed to take a bizarre-to-the-point-of-being-comical premise and written a captivating story that effectively marries the two fantastic genres.
What I enjoyed most from this book was the writer's ability to keep me interested through the rapidly changing scenes. The story went quickly through new places and people every few pages. Despite that, it was well put together so that it wasn't confusing and kept logically connecting the dots.
On romance front, for me it felt clipped and without depth. The writer was neither extremely graphic on the physical side nor overly attentive to the reasons the characters liked each other. Having said that, it actually wasn't distracting from the storyline. There is enough substance to the tale as a whole for me to get too caught up in the lack of swoonage.
I am excited to see where Alex and Mellie take us in the next book! If you want a fast-paced, fun read and enjoy the ideas on aliens or vampires (or both!), then this might be the book for you!
I’m not sure I even knew what a dystopian paranormal thriller was when I began reading The Legacy by G.G. Atcheson. It’s not a genre familiar to me, but I like to explore new authors and genres, and in this case, I was glad I did.
The story is a about Alex, an alien traveler from a faraway planet, who crash lands on earth where he is to observe and report back on what he finds. Unfortunately, Alex is not well-suited for earth and its food. He is sure to perish if he can’t repair his spacecraft and find his way back home to his wife and family. The story is told through Alex-- his observations, his experiences.
Alex runs into Mellie, an attractive, aggressive female vampire. She takes Alex under her wing as one of her own kind. Their relationship is a flirtatious one, with Alex struggling to hide his alien identity and to fit in with Mellie and her vampire world.
The story moves quickly from this point, and it becomes easier to see the world through Alex’s eyes. The author does a good job of staying in Alex’s head and making the dystopian world she created, as bizarre as it may be, seem believable. Alex lives through many up’s and down’s in his journey, being captured and then escaping only to face new enemies and challenges.
The book was written as first in a series, and the ending clearly delivers an unexpected twist and leaves you wanting to know what’s in store for Alex.
I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest, unbiased review.
I thought the premise was interesting -- an alien encounter with vampires -- but it didn't quite reach its potential. Some story arcs were well developed, whereas others were skimmed over or totally neglected.
Among the things that irked me were the errors in spelling and grammar. The alien, LX (aka Alex), had a reasonable command of English (as well as other languages and forms of communication), so some of these errors were intentional. However, their were glaring errors that lead me to believe that this book was originally written in another language, which in turn was poorly translated and edited.
Alex was the only character that had any real depth -- most of the others were superficial, and only served as filler to try and move the story along (though I did enjoy Alex's interaction with the autistic child). Too many storylines had predictable outcomes; however, there were other times when I felt that the ball had been dropped.
Overall, it was an average/good read, and I would consider reading the next book in the series, if only to see if some of those breadcrumbs were found and explored.
*I received this book free from the author in exchange for an honest review*
This is not typically a book I would have chosen for myself to read but I found this book to be very entertaining and enjoyable. However, once I reached the last page and realized I was reading the first book of a series I immediately thought: you mean I have to wait to read more about Alex and his adventure?
This book has very strong characters. G.G. Atcheson really makes these characters come to life. I kind of felt like I was watching this story in my head while reading it. Yep, this would make a great movie!!
As for Mellie, I really fell in love with her by the time the story ended. She is trying to battle between good and bad within her own species. She truly loves Alex and it shows every time they are around each other.
I really hope that Alex’s journey continues as this author really knows how to make the reader feel as if they are in the main characters head along with all of his emotions.
My Favorite Moment: When Alex starts a fire for him and Mellie. Are all species afraid of fire?
Let me begin by saying that I don’t normally read sci-fi. For that reason alone, it took me a little time to get into this book. I decided to read it because I just love something creative and new. Vampires and Aliens certainly fit that description. The story is written from the perspective of LX/Alex, an alien. While I was skeptical of this decision it turned out to be a brilliant choice. Alex’s perception of the world and the vampires was essential to this story.
The book is very descriptive and entertaining. Once the story got moving, it progressed nicely and kept my interest. I found myself disappointed when it came to an end and glad that the next book is coming out soon. I was actually surprised at how much story was in this 329 page book.
This book is part of a series so it does end with somewhat of a cliff-hanger but not one that left me feeling irritated or cheated. I can’t wait to see what is in store for Alex. No spoilers here, but the last chapter was a truly an OMG! moment for me.
Overall, I gave this book four stars and consider it a great first novel for a promising new author.
