The Mechanics of Fucking

As Alex would tell you, detective work is nowhere near as exciting as most people think. Luckily, there isn't much of it in here.

I'm the author of The Administration Series, a near-future SF dystopia published by Casperian Books. You can find the series in paperback, e-book, or (partly) on line at the Mannazone website.

I've been writing original slash since 2002 — or homoerotic fiction, m/m romance, yaoi, as you prefer. Original slash is my personal term of choice because I feel it best represents my writing in terms of style and what readers can expect to find there. Individual stories may or may nor be sexually explicit.

manna francis is very good at what she does. and what she does is m/m erotica.

BUT WAIT!!

before you dismiss her on the grounds of "i don't read erotica," know some facts. if you are reading this review because you saw the title of the book had the word "fucking" in it, and it made you laugh like a 14-year-old boy, welcome. you are my people. but if you are reading this because you are a friend of mine, then YOU KNOW that while i may read a lot of monsterotica in the great quest for giggles, i don't really read conventional-intercourse books because reading sex scenes bores me. manna francis is an exception. not because she writes above-average sex scenes (i don't skim hers, but i do read them quickly in a backwards-version of trying to "get to the good stuff.") but because she's above-average in the "remembering to have an actual story around the intercourse sequences." and this one, although short and not involving my beloved warrick-and-toreth from her administration series, which are full-length, and of which i have read 6 out of seven and loved, has an actual story.

and an actual fucking machine.

and it's good! the story. and, seemingly, also the fucking machine, but i can't personally speak to that. it's not as good as the administration series, so if you are looking to read some great story that also happens to have people having the intercourse sometimes, i would definitely start there. but if you are already a fan of manna francis, or m/m in general, this story is free, and short, and genuinely entertaining.

and i must confess, i laughed out loud a couple of times. not during the sex, though. that is serious business. she just has a way about her that delights me, and her characters are real-seeming and witty without feeling strained.

so for someone who isn't really into short stories (although i am mostly turning around on that point), or reading about sex, especially between two dudes where the fantasy of being one of the participants is entirely impossible, or having sex with a machine rather than a human - for me to enjoy this one as much as i did really speaks to her skill as a writer. i want more people to read her, please.

and it would make dana happy. have you met dana?

Dilemmas, dilemmas! On the one hand, I’m a sucker for anything Manna Francis and because I realize that I have a bit of a reputation as a psychotic fangirl -- the kind that would abduct that poor woman if she were to announce to never write another word about Toreth and Warrick again...

...and, bloody hell, let me tell you that I was one step away from setting my master plan into motion. I researched locks and bars for doors and windows and cozy, secluded rental apartments, in which I would install my favorite -- by then kidnapped -- author in front of a computer and friendly, yet firmly ask her to “WRITE MOAR ABOUT MY BABIES”...

..when she suddenly claimed to have written a book 8!

Since the anticipation has been eating me alive ever since, I'm rereading her books and now this little creation: The Mechanics of Fucking. If it weren’t for Nina, I’d never have noticed it. Despite its tempting title. What the heck indeed.

And this approximately 13 pages short story is nice! It’s well written and entertaining, like all Manna’s stuff is. And yes, it includes dirty mechanics and dirty fucking (without T&W, so it's not really the same, but oh well). My dilemma however: I’m not into erotic robots or fucking machines. And I’m fine with that, because they’re usually not into me either. But... I’m not really into reading about them either? :/

The fucking machine was like..well, like a machine. Like having a sex robot, the dream of every male teenage SF fan across the world. Getting tired, getting bored, having cramped muscles – these don’t mean anything to twenty kilos of steel and a continuous-duty rated electric motor.

Okay. Well, when you put it like that, Manna, I suppose I can see the appeal..for others. But that's not all, there’s something else going on as well...*whispers* something sexual, that I can’t seem to get used to either (not enemas, no. Thank god!). Please forgive me for being a dowdy Mary Sue here, but... tongues boldly going places where tongues have no business going... I can never help but wonder about hygiene, EHEC bacteria and ‘waste’. And let’s face it: those topics are mood killers.

Maybe one dirty day I’ll get used to it? :-o

For the first third of the story i thought the main character was a girl. Don't know why, but my mind was set on it. And then 'I only got a tingle in my nuts and a semi hard-on' hit me in the face.

he 'was barely parsing English' but he was capable to carry and set up a machine. his brain is peculiar.

In the end i was like 'HA! i knew it!'.

Ok, this was something new. I've seen videos about it but it's different when you read them and not see them. And because it's Manna Francis that wrote it, this gets rounded to 4 stars.

Looking at it with a cool head, it does sound suspicious that a young stud with an Aston Martin would pick an average detective. But I liked Alex's sense of humour, the easy manner in which they got to know each other and the whole sex machine theme was very original. Add to it the fuzzy happily ever after of Alex and Michael becoming a couple and I wish there was more written about these two.

Entertaining. Will have to catch up on the author's web site, much potential for amusement here.
