It’s amazing to realize how much our knowledge of dinosaurs has changed since this book was written, but this wonderfully-unscientific book (at least by today’s standards) was one of my first introductions to what would become a life-long interest in dinosaurs, (as I would imagine is the case for much of the pre-Pokemon generation). Humpbacked stegosaurs; slow-moving tyrannosaurs; tail-dragging, swamp-dwelling brontosaurs – and that unforgettable, bizarrely-drawn allosaurus that looks more like a "Doctor Who" lizard-man than a dinosaur:
...they’re all here in all their misunderstood glory. Along with “Classics Illustrated Comics,” the “How and Why Wonder Book” series probably contributed more to my more "formal" education than Ralph R. Smith* ever did.
Found the below bizarro 2000 reprint for my own sons in Malaysia back some fifteen years ago (who by then could appreciate the unintended humor) – but for me this "first edition" with the giant brontosaurus butt cover is the only “real” version.
*(No idea who he was, other than the namesake of the R.R.S. Elementary School)
Wednesday is nostalgia day for me, especially when things are slow at the office and I have time to browse GR. Another childhood favourite. Dinosaurs have always fascinated me, especially the giant vegetarian Brontosaurus, Triceratops with its three horns, Stegosaurus with all those spikes on its back and... who else? The awesome and terrifying Tyrannosaurus Rex.
My fascination is a bit weird, as I am deadly frightened of the tiny gecko! Maybe it is a matter of size.
Ahhh - the nostalgia! I had totally forgotten about the How and Why series of books. I remember this one being my favourite and the one that got me hooked on the "big toothy fellas". My parents bought me these books to stop me incessantly asking them How? and Why? all the time.
I will always love this book, which I read as a child. I still have a copy. Sure, some of the information has long since been overruled by paleontologists. Sauropods were actually not so heavy that they could barely drag themselves around on land, but the image of those two Brachiosaurs just chillin' in a deep, deep lake is nevertheless supremely cool. Also, T. Rex getting his noggin cracked by Ankylosaurus, and in another frame, getting his gizzard punctured by Triceratops, are enough to make any eight-year-old want to go back in a (dinosaur-proof) time machine. The illustrations are actually pretty amazing, overall, and this book offered kids a science-based glimpse of the Mesozoic long before the internet.
