It was supposed to be a fun-filled night at the arena, cheering on the Harrison Hawks, ogling the blond Acadian god/goalie in the crease, and maybe, if he was really lucky, catching an airborne puck with his hands and not his face.
Unfortunately for Daryl Hamilton, his first minor league ice hockey game ends with him catching something with his face, but it's not a puck. It's the fist of his dream goalie, Ryan Amirault. But while his nose may not be thankful for the badly timed autograph request, Daryl can't say that the rest of him isn't pleased with how things are turning out.
Not only is Ryan turning himself inside out to make things right with Daryl, the spark of attraction between the two men is slowly blazing up into a roaring inferno. The only problem – aside from two black eyes – is that Ryan isn't out, there's a viral video of the nose-crunching encounter, and a rather curious sports reporter is snooping around the daycare center where Daryl works. If their new love can survive all that, it will survive anything.
V.L. Locey loves worn jeans, Dr. Who, Torchwood, belly laughs, yoga, reading and writing lusty tales, walking, Greek mythology, the New York Rangers, comic books, and coffee. (Not necessarily in that order.)
She shares her life with her husband, her daughter, one dog, two cats, and a flock of assorted domestic fowl.
When not writing lusty tales, she can be found enjoying her day with her menagerie in the rolling hills of Pennsylvania, fresh cup of java in hand.
I love books that feature hockey and hockey players and it was lovely to be back in the excitement that is hockey. But this was a tad bit all over the place that I had to reread a few sentences to really figure out what was happening. But I realise this is an earlier book by the author so I shan’t hold it against her. I do hope to read more recent hockey books by her though =]
This was a very fun and sexy quick read that better editing here and there would have helped to make it much better.
The book has a great concept, great characters, touches of humor, steam without being vulgar, and great game sequences. I usually hate insta-love but here I didn't mind it as much because of the way the two main characters met each other.
My biggest complaint would be that I felt at times it was just drifting here and there and it got hard to read in those sections. Eventually it would get back on track and I would find myself invested again. A better editor or more time spent editing could have helped that one.
I look forward to reading more stories from V.L. Locey.
First off, even I know a hockey puck from a soccer ball! "CHANGE THE COVER!"
Ahem. I'm like Daryl: I watch ice hockey for the athletic, toothless goons with muscles. I was right there with him watching the guy's warm-up, etc., and even when he went to get an autograph. He's much nicer than me which is why he got the goalie. Some tense moments but a GOOD hea!
First off, WTH is up with the cover on here??? That is a soccer ball, not a hockey puck!
Anyway, this was an okay read. Premise was cute. Well, getting punched in the face isn't cute, but the idea of them meeting this way was kind of fun. I liked parts of this story, but then there were some weird grammatical/editing errors that were kind of glaring. For me to mention them means they definitely stood out. It's definitely a case of instalove, which I didn't mind. Overall, this story was fine, just nothing really memorable.
This isn't the cover of the book that I read, which is strange...
This was a super fun, exciting short about a hockey goalie and a fan. I've said this a million times, but novellas are so so difficult to get right without insta-love, but this one was easy to overlook. Very well done and with a great HFN.
2.5 stars. Pretty original meet cute. There's not much to the characters or the plot otherwise. Needed major editing—for example, when one of the MCs is washing his face, he refers to it as his "abolitions" (which should be ablutions).
Daryl is more a fan of super-hot goalie Ryan Amirault than the actual hockey game , but he does like it and goes with his friend to an at home game. He wants an autograph on his expensive jersey and waits in the back with other fans. Unfortunately he gets more than an autograph when Hot tempered Ryan swings at an opposing team-player and Ryan catches the punch in the face. The silver lining is he gets to meet Ryan personally and spend some time with him. The down side was someone caught it on video and the post goes viral. I absolutely loved this story. For me it started a bit slow with a lot of play by play hockey action but as soon as fists and sparks start flying I was all in. I loved both of these characters so much I was practically drooling. That is when I wasn’t chuckling. I adore the humorous often times clichéd banter and thoughts from Ryan especially. I found the sex very hot without being vulgar, just sweet hot and sensual the way I like it. If you like Hockey, hot goalies, sexy day care workers, good friends, a sweet romance, an interesting story in a short and sweet package this one is a must read. I’m no huge sports fan and I absolutely loved this story!
Overall, very enjoyable and sweet story. I really liked Daryl and Ryan. Each was adorable and lovable in their own way but together they were a great couple. I did not like Angus and Chet at all. Daryl mentioned a few times that they were good guys, but just about every time one of them opened their mouth it just reinforced my opinion of what a-holes they were. The set up was a somewhat questionable. After Ryan accidentally decked Daryl, he said “Thanks for agreeing to do this outside of the stadium. If the coach had heard I hit a fan, it would not have been so good for me.” That made no sense at all. They were just outside the stadium surrounded by fans (and likely some media) so how would Ryan think his coach wouldn’t find out? And then the whole bit about the media stalking the daycare center where Daryl worked and Daryl guessing they figured out who he was; well, if they did in fact correctly identify him, then they certainly would have been able to get his home address. Also, did Ryan have any experience being with a man? There were certain things he said that lead me to believe he didn’t. But regardless, I think the author needs to better understand the dynamics of two men fcking. There has got to be some prep, especially if it one’s first time. You don’t just roll on a condom, squeeze on some lube and plunge right in. Um, nope! This was my first time reading something by this author. While I think there could have been better editing and some questionable parts of the story could use some tightening up, I did like the writing style and the humor in the story so I will likely look for other works by Ms. Locey.
Hockey is a North American Blood Sport on ice. The players may get penalty minutes for fighting but if there were none professional hockey would lose a lot of fans. The fact that children emulate their heroes is a sad reality. Of course there’s also the fact that the Great Gretzky owed his career to the goon who attacked anyone who dared trifle with his charge. There’s even a feature video on YouTube that shows only the hockey fights from the previous night.
The writer is at pains to describe big sticks and big bodies repeatedly. Can we expect to read about big members as well? I continue to be bemused at the concept of women writing about gay men and gay sex. The fawning manner in which the narrator describes Daryl thinking about Ryan is at odds with the way they interact with one another. If he really was so much a pansy girlie boy I cannot see a rugged brawling French Canadian Hockey Player giving him the time of day or his hetero roommate and friends putting up with him. Walking out onto the ice in hockey skates might be awkward and get an undesired fan reaction.
Those cavils aside not a bad read with a make-out session and a big game to end.
In this book we meet Daryl Hamilton and Ryan Amirault. Daryl has never been into sports the closest he came to a sport was chess in high school but one look at Ryan and suddenly he is a hockey fan. When his roommates scores ticket and invites Daryl to the game, Daryl can't believe his luck. When it seems like he has caught the eye of the one man he is there to see he can't believe it. Ryan is not out yet and isn't sure how to handle things with Daryl but when he accidentally punches him. Ryan doesn't know what else to do but stay by the man who's eyes have drawn him in. Can these two find a HEA or will one punch change everything for them both?
This is a great story. It does have its ups and downs I really want to tell you about. However I don't want to ruin it for any other readers. I will say that this book will have you hooked from the first word to the very end. I would highly recommend it to anyone and everyone.
I somehow forgot I intended never to read from this author again. - repetitive sentence structure (“I did this. He said this and that. They were over here.”) - characters laughing at things that aren’t funny (eg MC is told he might have a concussion, MC says “fuck”, LI laughs) - MC’s supposed bff/roommate is openly homophobic multiple times and it isn’t addressed - casual sexism and fatphobia - this line “Say it again and I will throw you from the car like Danny DeVito’s mother” like??? I tried to google it and can’t find anything about her being in a car accident, but the “joke” is violence against women - typos like missing apostrophes - stupid things like this that are supposed to be funny but instead just awkwardly phrased and emotionless: “If you ever are dared, do not agree to let a hockey player hit you in the nose. It sucks and ruins an otherwise great night.” (also, it was an accident?? so the “joke” of doing it on purpose is even dumber)
I picked up this book as a freebie on Facebook. The cover above is not the cover on my e-book!
This is a super cute ice hockey story that has a bit of rough and tumble on and off the ice as well as in the bedroom. However, as with many ice hockey books the players are often scared to be true to themselves and their sexuality and this causes a problem.
The book has been written for the right reasons but could have used a better editing and proofing to tighten it up however it doesn't majorly detract from the final message of the story and the HEA.
It's a fairly quick read if you've got a bit of time to spare between major books or projects and it's always nice to read something from a new author I've not read before xx
Who doesn't hope that some day they'll meet their famous crush? Maybe have a relationship or maybe just get a signature? Well that dream was about to come true for Daryl. Only he had no clue how painful that first meeting would be, nor could he ever imagine how things would go after that crazy night. I loved this story. The way Daryl and Ryan would connect, literally, was filled with many funny aspects. Daryl's roommate and friend Angus and their buddy Chet are wonderful yet typical guys. Daryl on Percocet is hilarious. You'll find out for yourself. Highly recommend this!
It was so “meh”. I thought it was going to end on a cliffhanger, but it didn’t. The last part was so boring it would have been better if all of it was just chucked into the trash can and rewrote.
The story had good bones, a good proposal, but the execution was seriously lacking. There’s no character development at all. Each character has the depth of a minor character, including the main ones. Not even the relationship seems to be central.
Hopefully someone will retake this plot and rewrite it.
Very cute story about a hockey goalie who is in the closet who falls in love with this quirky gay guy who he punches in the face by mistake. What a “meet cute”!!
The plot is ok, although I found it hard to follow the timeline. For someone who does not know the intricacies of hockey as a sport, I have no idea how many days there were between matches.
This was an interesting read. Daryl was a kick in the pants. His enthusiasm for life and a certain goaltender made me smile many times throughout the story. Ryan had his issues, anger and personal life, yet I came to like him. I enjoyed the build up to the ending and Ryan and Daryl as a couple. There were steamy moments but more drooling in lust and star admiration that added a bit of humor to the story.
I found the majority of this story to be amusing and enjoyable. It's told from Daryl's POV, and his internal voice is quite entertaining. Ryan, the object of Daryl's crush, is a hockey goalie who accidentally does something that brings the two men into each other's lives. After that, though, instalove ensues and the story becomes more wish fulfillment than anything else. This is a fun little romp, but nothing more. But why the heck is there a soccer ball on the cover of this story??
4 stars Funny and very sweet. I loved the quirkyness of the main character, especially the banter between him and his two friends. And OMG when he was drugged up from the painkillers they gave him at the hospital - I was laughing through that whole scene! Also loved the whole vibe during the hockey games, very well written.
What was supposed to be a night drooling over his favorite goalie leads Daryll with more than he bargained for when said goalie, Ryan ends up accidentally punching him in the face. But through blood and gore the two have an instant connection. A great story filled with laughs and heartwarming declarations.
