Fire Rising is the second book in the Dragon Kings series and manages to merge both dragons with characters from this authors other popular series that featured Dark Warriors and also Dark Swords but trust me this book is all about the dragons! Ms Grant has managed to take something so fantastical and make it feel current and contemporary. When you read this book it really seems as if dragons could be amongst us and it's a magical thing!
Once again we are transported to Scotland the home of the Dragon Kings and one particular Dragon, Tristan is finally going to discover his own secrets. Tristan burst onto the scene two years ago when he was found but he has no memory of events before that. All those who meet him realise that at some point he was Duncan an immortal warrior but Tristan has fought against the idea until a chance meeting with a woman in peril awakens all his senses.
Sammi had been happily running a pub with her old boyfriend and business partner when she discovered that he had laundered money for the mob. When armed men arrive and kill her partner Sammi goes on the run but she's hurt and scared and feels so alone. Sammi travels to where her sister lives but has no idea that her sister is mated to an immortal who can shift into a dragon. She's near exhaustion when she arrives but not so dead that she cannot appreciate the fine male Tristan that lives on the Dreagan estate. The chemistry is instant but Sammi refuses to stay and place her sister in jeopardy so leaves but this time she is followed by Tristan. Unfortunately Tristan is not the only person hunting Sammi as the Dragon Kings greatest enemy Ulrich has sent men to capture Sammi but it's not just humans chasing Sammi down as the Dark Fae have a reason to hate the Dragon Kings and somehow Sammi is caught in the crossfire !
It's an amazing job the author does of making something that is pure fantasy feel so very realistic. The idea of dragons and Fae living amongst humans works very well here and I'm loving the way all the authors various series can just come together and breath life into this story. This is paranormal romance at it's very finest with characters that come to life and sweep the reader away. As always Ms Grant gives us a passionate and steamy tale but it's also an emotional one as these two people learn to trust each other.
The world building is amazing with such a diverse range of characters and that's where this author truly excels . From creepy bad guys to possessive courageous heroes , really strong female characters and enough twists and turns to keep the reader guessing. I absolutely adore a certain Light Fae whose mischievous nature always makes me laugh and there is still enough mystery to make me want to continue reading this fabulous series. Magic is always going to intruigue me but magic with a dragon involved now that's plain awesome! Another great story in what's turning into a fabulous series and I can't wait for the next book.

I wanted to give it 2 stars, but I just can't.

I'm so disappointed. I've been curious about Tristan's story since I read the Darkest Flame, but this.. I didn't expect this. I didn't feel any connection whatsoever with Sammi, the insta-lust was just annoying, and the story.. there was no story!! And the worst part.. I stopped caring about Tristan's past about 10% into the book! Ughh!!

The only thing that kept me going was wanting to know more about Rhi and Ulrik. That's it. Definitely won't be re-reading this one.

Just like every other book in this series, I was drawn in and captivated by this world. Dragons have been here since before man. They became sifters to peacefully exist with the humans. That doesn't happen though. And the complications begin.

Tristan's story is interesting. I'll admit that I was surprised that the newest Dragon King would be the subject to book two in the series. After reading it, I get why. Those dark are targeting who they see as the weakest link. Dang Fae. But what adds to Tristan's story is how he became a Dragon King or rather who he was before he became a Dragon King. He wants nothing to do with that, understandably. So the elements of that become woven into the story making this much more than a shifter romance.

I think that's one of the things I enjoy so much about this world and Donna Grant's writing. While we don't have dragon shifter, we do have a lot of people that just don't get along. There is so much mirroring in this world and our that it adds depth and interest that I enjoy.

Things are changing. Someone is after the Dragon Kings. They think they know who. But they are always surprised. I think there's more to it then we know at this point in the series. Old grudges run deep and revenge is best served cold. Much more to come.

Sammie is Jane's (another Dragon Kings mate) sister. She's in trouble and heads to Jan for help. That just ends up exposing the whole can of worms her life has become. It's also where she meets Tristan. But Sammie is bound and determined to not bring this mess on her sister's head - or Tristan's. She stubbornly tries to fight her own battles. I admire her though she has no idea what she's facing. She's a good strong female character that I liked.

Of coures, Tristan and Sammie together is explosively hot. And they resist the pull a lot. Both have reasons for trying to keep the other at bay. But they suck at resisting each other. Ha.

I keep wondering about Constantine. I think that's one of the things I really enjoy about this series. There are lot of other kings who's story I want. His is one. Doubt is cast on him in this book. But I'm having a hard time believing it. I don't always agree with him (or any king for that matter) but he wants what's best for his kings. It's the beginning of trust on my part.

More, I need more. I'm sure I'll be devouring the next book soon. I'm still in such a paranormal mood and these books just do it for me right now.

Sammi, Jane’s sister (Dawn’s Desire), is on the run and heads to Dreagan. While resting there she meets Tristan (Duncan) and is instantly attracted to him. Their relationship was quick, steamy, and filled with danger.

I really liked Sammi. She was strong, stubborn, and yet, very vulnerable. Sammi has to face a lot of challenging things throughout this book: dragons are real, the dark fae are after her, and most importantly, her own feelings about love.

Tristan, also known as Duncan the Warrior, is struggling to find out who he is. Is he Tristan? Is he Duncan? Can he be both? The struggle gets even harder after meeting Sammi because she keeps triggering memories of his past. His instant attraction to Sammi makes him leary and standoffish at times.

I really liked these two and the trials they faced. The story keeps getting better and more complex with each of these books. Who is after the Kings? Is it Ulrik or is someone else pulling the strings? I can’t wait to see what happens next because I don’t remember at this point (been 5 years). Also what is about Rhi???

This latest sizzling Dark Kings' romance is a must read for lovers of paranormal romance! Taken from my review at RomanceJunkies.com:

Samantha ‘Sammi’ Miller had trusted her ex-lover and business partner Daniel to handle the accounts for her business. But now, when it is too late, she discovers that he is using her bar to launder money for the mob. As if that is not bad enough, he stole from them and even involved her without her knowledge. Now the mob is after them and she knows they will never believe her protests of innocence. His deception has cost her the bar, which has been her whole life since the death of her mother. But as she packs, preparing to go on the run, she hears Daniel’s screams. The mob is there and torturing him for information to the stolen loot. Sammi manages to escape, but not before being shot in her arm. After four weeks on the run, with little to no sleep, she decides on a brief visit to her half-sister Jane’s home, located at Dreagan Distilleries. Jane has been trying to get Sammi to visit, but being busy with the bar, she never had the time. She figures she will only stay for a day and give herself time to rest, not wanting to bring trouble to Jane’s doorstep.

Dragon shifter Tristan, who is one of the kings, lives at Dreagan also. He has little memory of his past, only remembering falling from the sky, naked with a sword in the midst of a snowstorm. Everyone claims that he is Duncan, the deceased twin of warrior Ian. So far, Tristan has maintained his distance from his twin, having no memory of him. But when he meets Sammi, there is an instant chemistry between them. Appointing himself her protector, Tristan soon finds that their close proximity stirs up memories of his twin for some reason.

In trying to keep Jane safe, Sammi decides not to tell those at Dreagan about the mob that is after her. But with Tristan’s ability to get people to tell him whatever he wants to know, Sammi is soon spilling the beans, although she is not aware that she is doing it. With the bullet that was dug out of Sammi’s shoulder bearing the likeness of a dragon, the kings know that something much more devious is in the works. Tristan, along with the other Dragon Kings, discover that Sammi’s pursuers also include one of their own, the outcast silver Dragon King, Ulrich, who is bringing his five thousand year plan of revenge to fruition. To further his cause, Ulrich has joined with the Dark Fae. With evil quickly catching up with Sammi, Tristan will do whatever it takes to keep the woman he loves safe. Was the bombing of Sammi’s bar and her pursuit all part of a much different plan, which involves Tristan? Will Tristan be able to protect Sammi while avoiding capture himself, or will he lose his soul mate just as he has found her?

New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Donna Grant has penned a winner with her latest novel, FIRE RISING, the second book in her amazing DARK KINGS series. This delicious paranormal romance sizzles with sensuality and pulses with danger and excitement as the two main characters, a dragon shifter king and a mortal, fight the darkness that pursues them and struggle with the desire that flares up whenever they are together. Tristan and Sammi are wonderful together and the secondary characters, an intrepid Light Fae named Rhi and a clumsy Jane, who is the mate of Dragon King Banan, add even more humor, suspense and appeal to an already delightful tale. An additional highlight of this story is the healing of the twins, Tristan and Ian’s, relationship as Tristan’s memories begin to surface. I am a huge fan of all of Ms. Grant’s books, but especially the Dragon Kings. Readers will find this book hard to put down as the suspense continues to build right up to the very satisfying ending.

Loaded with magic, mystery, suspense, danger, passion and love, this riveting story is one you will not soon forget. If you enjoy this story, as I am sure you will, be sure to also pick up the first book in this series, DARKEST FLAME, as well as the exciting novellas – DARK CRAVING, NIGHT’S AWAKENING and DAWN’S DESIRE. The three novellas can be purchased altogether in the DARK KINGS anthology. Even though I enjoyed the way the book concludes, I always find it hard to leave Ms. Grant’s world of Dragon Kings, so I am now anxiously awaiting her next addition to this spellbinding series, BURNING DESIRE, which is due to release at the end of September 2014. For a mesmerizing story that is sure to leave you hungry for more of the Dragon Kings, pick up a copy of FIRE RISING. I am sure you will enjoy it as much as I did!

Fire Rising is the second book in Donna Grant's thrilling Dark King series featuring Scottish shape shifting dragons, magic, danger and romance. Once again we enter the world of the fierce warriors known as the Dragon Kings, shape shifters tied to both the human and fairy realms who fight to retain their magic and freedom.

Fire Rising swept me up right away with its story. Donna Grant gives us not only a wonderful paranormal romance filled with sexy, shape shifting dragon warriors, but a plot that begins to take some exciting direction as well. The story focuses on Tristan, who has mysteriously been turned into a Dragon King. He fell from the sky with only a sword—with no memories of his former life. Once part of the Donna Grant’s Dark Warrior series, and formerly known as the druid warrior Duncan (Midnight's Lover) he is killed and somehow returns as a Dragon King with all the dragon shape shifting and magical abilities of the other kings, only with no memory of what has happened to him.

As a new dragon king, Tristan is more vulnerable as he tries to figure out his past which haunts him. When he comes across Sammie for the first time he feels an immediate connection to her, and the more he is around her the more memories of his past begin to return. When old enemies threaten to take Sammi away from Tristan just as his heart and memories open up, the warriors know as Dragon Kings will once again unite together. Tristan will need the help of his shape shifting dragon brothers as well as allies from his past who have not forgotten their Druid brother.

Another fantastic read by Donna Grant. Tristan makes a super, sexy (vulnerable) Dragon shifter and this time around our heroine Sammi gets to take flight with her dragon lover. The romance and tension are there for these two, but in this story I would say the plot is more focused, with some very interesting and exciting new threads. Tristan's character really took the forefront of this story, and I love the connection I was able to build with his character because of it. Sammie our heroine, who is on the run from the mob and dark Fae, was a more in the background and had less of an active role, despite this fact it was still easy to connect with her. She's been hurt before and has a hard time trusting Tristan at first, making the romance filled with some nice tension. Old characters (Rhi an awesome light fairy with tons of sass and druid warriors) continue to be a part of the overall story arc, and the bigger mystery behind the Dragon Kings, Dreagan Industries, the dark and light Fae courts are interwoven.

With magic, shape shifting dragons, and deadly warriors with sexy Scottish brogues, it's hard not to swoon over these Dragon Kings! I can't wait for the next installment in this exciting series that delivers my fix for swoon, romance and action!

My Rating: 4.5 Stars. I really like it!

SPOILER ALERT. This is an honest and highly subjective review, proceed with caution. You have been warned.

GR doesn't have point-five, so I just round the number. Anyway, I liked the story in Fire Rising and it looks like the series is getting better. I am impressed. Good job, author.

What I liked.
* The plot was interesting, enough to hook me until the end.

* I liked the romance. It was there although not much scenes of it as the premise focused more on action and suspense, at which I loved.

* Learnt that vicious Dark Fae people might not as dark as they claimed be. They could flip back to Light, there's a way although it may not easy. - as Kiril said.

* My most favourite character in this series is Rhi. She's a nice person and yet she's damaged from the inside. Poor Rhi.

* The bromance between Ian and Tristan.

* The heroine's a Scottish! Maybe half. I don't care. As long as she's not American. Before you kill me for saying that, read this status update I wrote during reading:
Not that I have anything against American but I sensed stereotype in previous books where all the heroines are Americans, in Scotland. The chances these dragon boys meeting their American darlings is past coincidence, it felt unnatural.

What I disliked.
* So much is missing and unanswered.

* There was one particular scene that both hero and heroine were acting moronic.

* What's with the nick/short names? I remember a person closest to me said, "It's a shame to give your kid a beautiful, long name only to be called by the shortened version of it. Might as well just give your kid the short name." -- feel free to argue with me. Anyway, I'd love people to call me by my full name but I felt bad for them because to pronounce it would get them tongue-twisted. Hence, I allowed the nickname.

* Improved plot, yes but it's quite similar to previous book. I see no originality. Clue:

* So many characters and once again, I lost track yet I have to remember them because they're all connected to each other. This has to stop and am still figuring out how.

Main characters: Tristan/Duncan (Dragon King of Amber/former Warrior) + Sammi (human)

......

I read the excerpt of the next book and already I'm loving it. Why? Hints:

Read on your own peril.

This is the Dragon King book I have been waiting for. Tristan and his past and knowing exactly who he was has had my interest piqued since the moment he fell from the sky and into the lives of all those who inhabit Dreagan. There are so many questions surrounding Tristan how can one not be beyond curious.
Since the moment Sammi found out she had a half sister she has been in avoidance mode. Sammi knows the pain and hurt of loss. She has resigned herself as a loner. The fewer attachments to more likely she is never to experience loss again. She is fine with this until she becomes a target. On the run she can only think of one truly safe place. That safe place puts her having to form a relationship with her sister and in direct sights of a man that is so much more than just a man.
It doesn’t take Tristan long before he realizes that Sammi causes something interesting to happen to him quite often when he is in her presence. He notices that touching her causes him to have brief glimpses into something that he has been trying to avoid. The more trouble that plaques Sammi the more Tristan is put into a place that he has been trying to avoid. It seems that fate really wants Tristan to know things that he can only avoid for so long.
As with all of Donna Grant’s Dark Swords, Dark Warriors, and Dark Kings books I am so pleased that I get to still read the lives of so many of the characters from the past books. She never gives them little roles either. They always seems to have very active roles within whatever is going on. The battles are constant and her characters know that working together is the only way to fight the evil that plagues them.
My only disappointment was that there were a couple of questions that were not answered. Something Sammi does raises some questions about why she was able to do it. There was never any light shed on this. It might be something that will be brought up in a later book, but I would have liked to have known more now. When it comes to Tristan there are several huge questions. Some are really obvious. I suppose any book that I enjoy in a world that I love I always want more of everything. So of course I wanted more answers.

Pub owner Sammie Miller finds herself running for her life when her business partner steals money from the mob and comes after them. Her partner never made it out of the bar before it was blown up. After some time on the run and nowhere else to go she finds herself visiting her sister Jane for some much needed rest. To try to keep Jane safe she keeps her troubles to herself and vows to get away from Dreagan as soon as she can. Tristan still can't remember his life as Duncan. He fits into his new life as a Dragon King and really doesn't want to remember his supposed past. As soon as he lays eyes on Sammie he is immediately protective of her and shortly after that he starts having flashes of his past life as Duncan. With all the emotions running through him all he wants to do is keep Sammie safe but she doesn't make it easy.

I have to admit that Sammie and Tristan were not my favorite couple so far but they still fit together nicely, their story was still fantastic and I like how they tie the Dragon Kings together with the Dark Warriors. It's nice to see most of the crew together in FIRE RISING. I could not imagine being in Tristan's position and I really felt like he handled everything as best he could. I am glad that he has a better understanding of who he is but the end and that he has Sammie by his side as he worked everything out.

On the romance side of things FIRE RISING was still hot hot hot. There is a normal amount of fighting feelings at times on both sides but both Sammie and Tristan know that they are falling fast for each other and sparks fly from pretty much the beginning.

I really like how the series is a continuous story conflict with their own plot lines drawn in. I have found that each story in the series is full of action and danger. I really love all the dragons and look forward to watching them each find their match as the series continues.

Fire Rising is the second book in the Dark Kings series with Scottish shape shifting dragons who are fierce warriors and passionate lovers. This is the book I have been waiting for and I loved everything about this book!

Fire Rising is Tristan’s story, the newest Dragon King, who has been a mystery for the fans of this series. As the newest king we got the treat of seeing him adjust to his new abilities of shifting into a dragon and flying, which made for some funny scenes in Dark Craving (Dark Kings 0.1). But Tristan does not remember anything from his past. He has no idea of who he was and why he became a Dragon King, so the not knowing has haunted him. In a surprising twist we discover that Tristan was Duncan, a powerful warrior from Donna Grant’s Dark Warrior series. But Tristan has no memory of it. He has accepted his new family with the other kings but still feels incomplete. That is until he meets Sammie Miller. Sammie is in danger and comes to Dreagan to visit her half-sister of Jane. The moment Sammie and Tristan meet there is an intense attraction. But they both are holding back – Tristan because he doesn’t remember his past and Sammie afraid to love again. Their romance is steamy and predictable but what I loved was how they healed each other. They both had to learn that who they are today matters most than their past. The story of discovering the Dragon Kings enemy continues but I really enjoyed the addition of the characters from the Dark Warrior series. I still haven’t read that series but it was easy to understand who the characters were and I plan to start the series soon.

This was another exciting and romantic story, which is just what I have grown to expect from author Donna Grant. Fire Rising can be read as a standalone but I suggest you read all the books (including the novellas). This is one of my favorite series and I highly suggest this to all paranormal romance fans.

REVIEW:
Is it wrong for me to want all the Dark Fae to die horrible slow deaths? I get a huge case of anxiety whenever I read about them. Fire Rising kinds followed a very similar plot line as Darkest Flame yet it was still a good story. I loved Tristan, yet at the same time I want to slap him upside the head. Boy, you need to learn about your past and deal with it in order to have a future. Geesh. Sammi is tough yet at the same time she is not. She has lived through a lot and that has made her harden her heart. Of course it takes a life and death matter to make her open her eyes. Silly girl.

All and all this was a good book. I love all the character that were involved in this mission. And I am very much looking forward to the next book in this series. I believe Kiril’s books is going to be a wild ride.

Let me tell you that this is my all time favorite series. I guess I just love these dragon kings & all the places this series can go!

I read the very first book of prequels that were a bunch of novellas in one book & then I missed the first book that was a full length book. Not a big deal, but since I love this series so much, I will be going back to read it too!!

I seriously cannot say how much I loved this dragon series & I put it above all the other dragons I have read! Maybe it's the highlander in them, but yep!! Love IT!!

So, back to the basics. This was Tristin's story, but it centers around Sammi. I was not a fan of Sammi. I don't really know why, except that she seemed dull & flighty. She kept leaving & coming back. She liked Tristin, but wanted him & her sister to be safe. The only safe place was with them, so it was back & forth.

What I really liked was the incorporation of other people's story, the dragon's past & Con!! I want his and Ulrich's story. Con needs to hook up with a silver dragon woman... HA!

To sum it all up, it was more of what is to come that I loved instead of this particular story!

Lots of exciting fast paced action in this paranormal romance. I liked many characteristics of both hero and heroine but the story was a bit too heavy on the number of times the heroine seemed to be in dire straights. It is obvious this is part of a series and this piece of the conflict felt tedious. The mob is after Sammie so she runs to her sister and is helped by her sisters dragon friend Tristan.

Summary

Sammi Miller, has always lived a tame life, a bar owner in Scotland. She loves doing what she does, and it honors her mother who is gone. But when she learns that her partner, best friend, and ex lover, had stolen money from a mob to support the bar, she ends up seeing him killed, her bar blown apart, shot in the shoulder and on the run from the mob. After a while of being on the run, she knows she needs to find a place of safety, even just for a few days. And there is one place that she has in mind...Dreagan Industries. She has a half sister, Jane, and she knows that she will be safe. But when she arrives, she meets the stunning Tristan. He is gorgeous, sexy and has a past that haunts him. Tristan and Sammi end up together, when Sammi's enemies increase, and the mystery of why become more pronounced. Tristan knows he will do everything in his power to keep his mate safe from their enemies, but will their love be enough to save them...

The Hero

Tristan, is the newest member of the Dragon Kings. He has a past, but he has no knowledge of his past, or how to interact with his twin. The truths that are revealed in this story, connect to Dark Sword series. Tristan is a strong hero, despite the fact he has no idea who he really is, he knows where he belongs...with the Dragon Kings. He is part of a brotherhood. His reaction to Sammi is intense, he knows that she is something special, but he can't pinpoint why. What I loved most about Tristan, is the way he is about Sammi. He has alpha male tendencies...the need to protect and fight for what is his. And even though his character is still struggling because of issues of his past. He is the type of hero, that doesn't focus on the past so much as the present and future. He is a fighter, gorgeous in his dragon form, and very sensual. I loved seeing the connection to the other series. Although I am not sure how I liked the way he was with his twin. I felt so bad for Ian, and there were moments in this story that it was just heartbreaking. But you also see how Tristan develops as a character and the way he changes is very engaging.

The Heroine

Sammi Miller, is a business owner, and in the beginning quite innocent of anything that exists other than humans. Sammi, even though she has a half sister, doesn't know what to make of their relationship. She misses her mother, who raised her and started the pub. At the beginning you see how close she was to her. Sammi's world is torn apart and now is running for her life. Sammi is reluctant to go to her sister, because she doesn't want to risk her safety. Sammi is independent and stubborn, and is adamant that this fight is her own. But the moment she enters Dragan Industries, that all changes. Despite being injured and battle worn from running for a whole month with a bullet in her shoulder...this woman has fortitude. I came to admire her character. She did have some flaws, I felt she was being a bit too hardheaded about some things. And I wanted to shake her and call her "idiot", but I could also see where she was coming from. If I was in her place, I might have done the same thing. What I liked about her character was her fighting spirit and how she never gives up. Sammi is put through the ringer, and what courage she has. I loved how she wants to make her own way and not lean on the hero. Although with Tristan...as sexy as he is...it would be the highest temptation. Sammi was a fascinating character and she had many qualities that I look for in a heroine.

Plot and Story Line
Now first I want to say that if you plan on reading this series, you need to start with the Dark Sword series. I would highly recommend it. There are many connections to that series. You don't have to, but it will make more sense if you do. Now it is a historically based series, but has the same tone of paranormal elements as the Dark Kings have. It is very well done, so I would recommend it. And who can resist Donna Grant? Because I can't. :) Now about the plot of Fire Rising...it was exciting and thrilling. There was so much going on here that if you knew it all, you might become overwhelmed at the beginning. But Grant has a wonderful way of weaving together a story and the way she blends in scenes, characters, climaxes and attention to detail, you won't be overwhelmed in any way. This has everything you need for a stunning paranormal romance that will you have on edge from beginning to end. There is no end to the action. I loved the tone of the story, which is full of suspense and unique plot twists. The romance itself is wonderful, and we see as the characters grow....so does their relationship. The steam isn't super hot, but it is plenty sexy, and I loved seeing how these two come together. There is quite a depth to the story as well, and the villains of the story, oh my...they were written so well. They definitely prove themselves as matches for the Dragon Kings...only the Dragon Kings are experienced, talented, and nothing can stop them. Loved how they band together to fight off the latest threat. The ending...I enjoyed it, as for Sammi and Tristan there is no cliffhanger. But there is a small one, so I hope it continues off in the next book. I can hardly wait...

Cover
I have really enjoyed the covers of this series. They are what drew me to this author and this series. On Fire Rising, we have a image of the hero (Tristan) and what a gorgeous model this is. Oh yeah I could put this on my wall, frame it and gaze at it all day. The imprint of the red dragon on the center, is simply delightful. I never know how I will feel about tats, some are good and some aren't. But this cover...is HOT!!. I really also liked the swirling mist, which goes with certain aspects of the story. They did great with this cover, because it goes with the story hand in hand. Hot Cover...Sexy book...perfect match!

Overall View
Donna Grant brings to us another great installment to the Dark Kings. Fire Rising is a intensely weaved story that is full of compelling characters, steamy action, fast paced scenes, and a love story that is deliciously sexy.

Better core storyline but still insta-lust/love & lack of depth/connection. Lost star for FAIL re: certain items towards end.

Buddies say series get better. I have serious doubts, but *am* curious about next books MCs so...

Donna Grant continues to out do herself. Never one to start a story with a slow progression towards the action, Grant hits you with it as soon as you being the first chapter. Those familiar with the Dragon Kings will not be disappointed. If this is the first Dragon King or you, you don’t know what you’ve been missing.

Sammi, Jane’s sister, is on the run. Mind you, she didn’t actually do anything to warrant having the mob after her. She is merely guilty by association. That of course matters not one bit to the men who are out to kill her. Sammi’s character is quite resourceful. She’s naïve enough to not have realized that her ex lover was laundering mob money through her bar, yet intelligent enough to evade the mob for over a month. While injured nonetheless.

From the moment Sammi and Tristan set eyes on each other the sparks fly of the page and you know that something special is going to happen. What you don’t know is what they will have to survive to be together to begin with. Remember… Sammi, like most humans, knows absolutely nothing of dragons much less Dragon Kings. As for Tristan, he can’t stop thinking about this incredibly brave human. He feels drawn to her even though he knows he can’t have her. But of course as we all know, the path of true love has never run smooth, so why should romance novels be any different? Roadblocks are coming at the characters from every direction at this point. They come in the form of Tristan’s unremembered past as a Warrior, a twin brother he also can’t remember, and to be honest, it really does not look as if he wants to remember all that badly, an unseen enemy that the Dragon Kings assume is one person but Grant really never addresses by name when he makes an appearance, so you don’t really know for sure if he’s the bad guy and hero willing to give himself up if it means keeping the woman he has yet to admit he loves safe. Are you confused yet?

All that being said, I can safely say, “Oh my God I love this book”. After a few unsuspecting events popping up, Dragon Kings willing to sacrifice themselves in order to save Sammi and the Warriors and Fae getting involved in ensuring her safety, everything finally comes to a head at this point. It may be my OCD demanding that the villain’s name be clearly stated, but in all honesty, because it is not stated and his name is never actually said at any point when any of the characters address him, we still do not know definitively who the villain is. There is the obvious confrontation between the Warriors and Kings and the bad guys, and yet again… the mastermind behind it all remains unnamed. Could it be the defeated and disgraced former Dragon King? Sure. That would be the obvious choice for villain. But I can’t help but point out his look of confusion when confronted not once, but twice by Kings about his supposed involvement. Am I playing devil’s advocate and trying to build the suspense by leading you down a different path? I’ll admit to possibly doing that. But think about it… what a twist it would be for the villain to be someone completely unexpected.

Although you will not find any real cliffhangers here, I do feel the need to point out that I will be waiting with pins and needles for the next Dragon Kings book to answer a few important questions. Not to mention that we just lost one of our own to the Dark. Yes, I say we because by the time you get to the end of the book, you feel as embroiled in this story as if it were taking place around you, not within the pages of a book. Grant’s unique way with words has you believing in ancient dragons and god-like warriors. They are out there, keeping the world safe from demons and other dark beings. I felt it and once you’ve read Fire Rising so will you.

At this point I’ve only got one more thing to say… It’s time to mount a rescue! Hit me with your next book, Ms Grant.

Into the void once more we go! Donna Grant is once again taking us into the world of Dragons and Fae, Humans and Warriors.. As they fight the never ending battle of Good vs Evil and who will rule the world. What more can you ask for?

Fire Rising is the second full book in Ms. Grant's Dark Kings Series and in typical Donna Grant fashion she emerges us into a world where anything is possible.

Fire Rising is Tristan's Story and wow what a story it is. Tristan appeared on the scene a newly minted Dragon King, King of the Ambers, just two years ago. Literally falling from the sky. The first new Dragon King since before time and yet a blank sheet where his past is concerned. But no worries, Tristan fit in well with the Kings and has found his place. BUT it seems he has more of a history than even he could imagine and a wonderful connection with the Warriors.

He may be new to the Dragons but Tristan is a man too and as appreciated of a pretty lass as the next man. Easy going in general but extremely loyal. When Bannon's mate Jane is worried about her sister. Tristan offers his help and the compelling connection between the two rocks his world just a little bit more than he planned. His need to protect and care for her is almost over whelming.

Sammi Miller was an only child for most of her life but as an adult a surprise half sister shows up. One who lives not too far away on the Dreagan estate. While Sammi is not really trusting of relationships she keeps Jane at arms length but Jane has made it clear that she is there for her. So when her partner gets them in trouble with the mob and her beloved pub is blown to smithereens, Sammi can only think of one place to go. She just worries about bringing trouble to their door. Poor Sammi, she has absolutely no idea.

While the connection between Tristan and Sammi sizzles Ms Grant lets it simmer throughout the book. Keeping it on the back burner, we are always aware of it and it is what holds the story together BUT it's not always in the forefront of the book.

That would be the fight between the Dark Fae and the Dragons. Or discovering who their mysterious enemy is (thoughts on that later) Or Tristan dealing with some new found relations.. Or...

Donna does it again! Her talent for weaving a wicked tale is just outstanding.

Now my thoughts on some things.. MIGHT BE CONSIDERED SPOILERS...

Ulrik - Donna keeps pointing the dragons in his direction. Leaving a breadcrumb trail to his door but is he the enemy? Or is there another. I am still not sure. For some reason I just keep thinking there is way more to the story than we are seeing. Type of the iceberg kind of thing. Is Ulrik totally pissed at Con? You bet. Does he want the return of the dragons? Yep.. But... Yeah see I just don't know.

Con - What's going on with Con? What has he done in the past to protect Dreagan? What has he sacrificed and why is he so angry when the Dragons find their human mates?

Rhi - Ok, who is the mystery king she loves? I am going for Con.. but once again that seems to be the obvious choice. But it would be in typical Con behavior to walk away from love so he can protect Dreagan. Hmmmm

Ok, those are my questions.. I am sure they will eventually be answered. I am just enjoying the ride.

Donna Grant does it again! I am absolutely obsessed with the Dragon Kings! I go through these books so quickly! I'm beginning to think I should save them all until the series is completely written so I don't have the agony of waiting months between books!

This story was about Tristan finding his mate Sammi. I love Tristan's whole story - from book 0.1 where he fell from the sky, to this book where he found his soulmate. Back when I read book 0.1 (Hal and Cassie's story) I was also reading the end of the Dark Warriors series and I was POSITIVE that Tristan was Duncan. I even emailed Donna to ask! She wouldn't reveal anything but commented that I wasn't the only one to mention this to her. I'm so glad I was right.

It'll be interesting to keep reading and see how much more of his life as Duncan he remembers. I admit I was concerned what would happen when he found out that Malcolm killed him, but I'm glad nothing bad happened. Although I admit that the whole part where he found out and then talked to Malcolm and Ian about it happened pretty quickly, and at the very end, so it made it seem like an after thought. But I'm glad it was addressed.

I really like Sammi and her personality, and I can completely relate. Being on your own for so long and not depending on anyone else for anything is a hard habit to break. I often think how nice it would be to find someone who will take care of me for a change so I don't have to do everything - just like Sammi did. I'm jealous she found her soulmate.

The one part of this book that made things interesting is everything happening with Ulrik and the guy who wants to destroy the Kings. Every time they approach Ulrik about things, he doesn't deny anything, but he also doesn't admit anything. If I was a betting person I would bet that the revenge Ulrik is seeking and the revenge being talked about in the book by the unknown guy is not the same thing. My own personal thought is that Ulrik has something planned, but it's going to be found out by the other Kings and eventually they'll all become friends again. Maybe Con and Ulrik will have an all out brawl but it won't end badly. In the end my money is on Ulrik rejoining the Kings to help them fight the real bad guy and the Dark Fae. Of course if this isn't what happens, I'll be glad I didn't bet any actual money on it!

There is only one part of the book that I didn't like. When Rhi is captured and almost everyone completely gives up on her. This girl has done so much for the Kings and their mates and the moment she's in trouble they forget about her. She gets captured and is being tortured and they do almost nothing. Yes, they did look for her while looking for Sammi, but only as an after thought. And once they found Sammi, they leave without even wondering about Rhi. It really makes me wonder why she ever bothered helping them. Then Tristan and Sammi are mated and are on their honeymoon while Rhi is still being tortured. She helped them. Multiple times. And they forgot about her. That I really don't like - and I think is out of character for the Kings. That's the main reason I didn't like this part - not because of the morality of what's being done to Rhi - but the fact that I don't believe the Kings would just forget about her so easily.

Now the waiting for book 3 and Kiril's story to come out!

After the first promising volume, which had introduced us well into the so particular universe of the Dragon Kings and their enemies Dark Faës, Donna Grant come back with a continuation even more spellbinding and astonishing. Tristan, a dragon who dissociates himself and which is full with mysteries, won't have waited too long to be in the light. I acknowledge that Sammie is the perfect woman for him. Two skinned hearts in search of which they are and who are afraid to give a chance to their feelings.

It's with a great pleasure that I discover Tristan, who he really is, what is his past and which will be his choices. He is a character who had immediately intrigued me by his complexity, his jovial and combattive personality, and which is detached from the other dragons. He also astonished me by his decisions, without asking Con's opinion and that even if he fought his attraction for Sammie less than Kellan previously, he spends much more time to realize his feelings. There is too much to say about this character, it's better to read the book to get it all.

Sammie is completely different from Danae and yet they are both strong protagonists, with a marked and percutive personality. What differenciate her finally it's her brittleness which is near the surface, she is afraid to stick to people, to trust anyone and consequently she can easily break. Her relationship with her sister is rather complicated and this is why she understands Tristan as well. She's a character really attaching and whom we have immediately desire to support.

The supporting characters are the same as in the previous volume, with the only difference which we does not see at all the Danae/Kellan couple, which disapointed me. But I will especially speak about certain characters who once again are detached from the others. Rhi is always also amusing, adorable, interesting, in short we love her!! Con is able to astonish us, appearing per moment under a new day and disconcerts us, not knowing what we should really think of him. Kiril takes his spy's job at heart and do his best to help the others Dragon Kings. He starts to become an interesting character. Balladyn is the character who the most intrigued me in this book. I'm not that sure that he's really on the Dark Faë's side. Idem for Ulrik which leave us perplexed with the little that we see of him. He's not what he wants to looks like…

But the most interesting in this book is the interactions between the Dragons Kings and the Warriors thanks to Tristan, which is both at the same time. By discovering his lost memories, he approaches the Warrior and gives a reason so that they are also present in the story. The war continues obviously between the dragons and Dark Faë, although now the others races are really involved inside. There are still a lot of questionings like the why of this war, who really rules in the shades and which is the Rhi's former lover! This book is really better than the last one, more actions, more bounces, more rhythm, we have the feeling to pass on a higher level. Now I really expect more things from the continuation.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Tristan, the newest Dragon King, is having a tough time fitting in. Despite his ability to transform into a proud, strong dragon at will, no one knows where he came from or how he became a Dragon King, including himself. When trouble arises in the form of the mob, Tristan is going to have to put aside his questions and band with the other Dragon Kings to protect Dreagan. As if things weren’t complicated enough, he is about to find something worth fighting for more important than the Dragon Kings…

Sammie Miller, pub owner in Oban, has been scorned by her business partner—and former lover. Used as a front for money laundering with the mob, Sammie is in great danger once she realizes what has happened. Barely escaping, she plans to rest at Dreagan for only a day before going back on the run. When Tristan swears to protect her, Sammie thinks his efforts will be in vain—the mob is too powerful, and it will take more than the average man’s devotion to keep her safe. But the closer she gets to Tristan, and the more he learns his secrets, Sammie can’t deny that having a Dragon King who worships you, body and soul, isn’t such a bad thing…

FIRE RISING is the latest Dark King paranormal instalment from author Donna Grant. The focus of the storyline is on the continuing struggle of the Dark Kings (Dragons) with the one time King Ulrik and what now appears to be his possible association with the Dark Fae. The Dark Kings is a spinoff from Donna’s Dark Warrior series which in turn is a spin off from Donna’s Dark Sword series- all set in the Highlands of Scotland.

FIRE RISING’S ensemble cast of Dark Kings and Dark Warriors (and Dark Swords) merges the world of three of Donna’s most popular series. We get another look at some of the couples we have grown to love as they work together to save a woman who may or may not be the mate to one of their own. While the Dark King’s rule Scotland and The Dark Fae rule Ireland we will see a centuries old détente begin to crumble as Ulrik seeks the retribution and revenge against the Dark Kings he once called friends. He will never forgive King Constantine for the destruction of the woman he loved-even though-she put the entire species at risk.

Donna reveals the cruel and dangerous workings of the Dark Fae-how they destroy the Light; the evil that has become of a once beloved Fae; and the possibility of losing Rhi to the Dark side. We watch as one of the Dark Kings-Kiril- goes under cover in Ireland to ferret out any insider information that can be used against a most powerful enemy and in doing so sets up the next storyline in the Dark Kings series-BURNING DESIRE.

Donna Grant weaves an intriguing, seductive and compelling story of action, suspense and romance: where the powerful dragon is at risk of losing his heart and his soul; and where the enemy becomes more powerful every day.

Samantha (Sammi) Miller owns a pub with ex-lover Daniel as her partner - that is until a mob bursts in, tortures and kills Daniel, then sets fire to the pub and shoots at her while she's trying to escape. A month later, she arrives at Dreagan, where her half-sister Jane and Jane's husband Banan live, hoping for a little rest before she continues running. Tristan, the newest Dragon King, immediately feels some connection with Sammi and will protect her at any cost.

Although her prolonged argument with Daniel really annoys me, Sammi starts off as a great heroine, figuring out how to evade the bad guys. Very soon, though, she turns into a damsel in distress, a victim, who makes the worst possible decisions, blaming and accusing others of using her, when they are trying their hardest to protect her. She is nasty to both Jane and Tristan. This woman is totally a terrible judge of character. After the first escape attempt, people have to keep rescuing her, while she sits there helplessly, mostly feeling sorry for herself. At one point, Ian gives Tristan some relationship advice, drawing from his experience with Dani. But Ian, Dani is great. Dani makes you better. Sammi just sucks all happiness from around her.

Tristan is mostly fine. The only time he gets irritating is when he selfishly doesn't take Sammi back to the manor, knowing it's the safest place for her where she would be surrounded by Dragon Kings, because he wants to keep her for himself a little longer.

I re-read the end of chapter 39, but I must have still missed something - do Tristan and Sammi start having sex in front of everybody? I didn't notice them moving away from where the Dragon Kings drop off their passengers.

Balladyn is a bit...unfortunate. His situation is a bit too much like Malcolm. I suppose the same goes with Ulrik. Is Ulrik really a villain? Con is all right in this, although he is still an idiot when he is around Rhi. And poor Rhi...yes, poor Rhi.

All right, with all the above, why am I still giving it a 4 stars? Well, the story is actually pretty good and most of the other characters are pretty good, so I could generally ignore Sammi.

After August 2024 re-read on audio book: Sammi truly did not deserve Tristan.

Sammi is on the run, from the mob, after her partner/ex-lover launders money through her pub. She has no where to go, but to her step sister. But in doing so, it could bring danger to her and her family. Sammi doesn’t wanna do that, but she has no other choice. She has no one else in the world.

Tristan has been a dragon king for two years and he’s still trying to figure out why. He has no memory from before falling out of the sky and landing as a king. He’s been told he has a twin, who’s a warrior, but seeing him, isn’t what he’s ready for.

When Sammi comes to Dreagan searching for help, she meets Tristan and is instantly drawn to him. But she knows she can’t stay there, or else they could be in danger as well. But Tristan isn’t going to let her get away so easily. While trying to help her he starts to feel for her, but doesn’t know how to deal with it. And when he’s close to her, his past creeps up on him. So he’s not sure if this is a good or bad thing. But I like how he’ll protect her, even if he says it’s just because she’s family. He’s afraid to get close, since he’s still struggling with his past.

“Your past doesn’t define you, Tristan. Your actions in the present do.”

This story brings back a few of our warriors and druids and sets us up for some crazy new side stories. Rhi, for instance, I knew she was going to have a bigger role in this. But as to what, I’m still not sure. But I hope we find out her story. I just know it’s a good one!! Balladyn has a story also. I am crossing my fingers for him. Ulrik makes me nervous. Something bad is bound to happen. I just hope the dragons can stop him before it gets too bad.

Bring on the next one!!

Fire Rising by Donna Grant is the 2nd novel in her Dark Kings series. This story focuses on Tristan and Sammie. Sammie is Jane’s half-sister and Tristan is the newest Dragon King. He fell from the skies as a Dragon King two years ago. He recently discovered that he had a life prior to becoming a Dragon King and he has a twin brother from that life, Ian. He has no memories of his previous life as Duncan, an Immortal warrior, until he meets Sammie. His interactions with Sammie trigger bits of memories from when he was Duncan. As Sammie and Tristan grow closer and danger draws near Tristan struggles with trying to reconcile his past life with his current. And Sammie struggles with letting herself grow close to someone. It broke her heart when her mother died and she is afraid of opening up herself to that kind of pain again.

Tristan is a great hero and I loved him and Sammie together. Their romance develops steadily though the course of the novel. The attraction is instant but their love grew at a rate that felt natural. Sammie is also a likable character. She is independent and strong but determined to hold herself back. I liked the process of her learning to love again.

I really enjoyed Fire Rising. It was fast paced, interesting, exciting and it left me anxious for more. The battle with the Dark Fae and Ulrich continues and it’s intensifying. The characters are well developed and the plot is intricately woven. It’s a great addition to the Dark Kings series and I look forward to future stories.

I recommend the Dark Kings series to fans of paranormal romance.

I must say that Donna Grant had improved her writing skill and technique. She plunged the series with many mysteries and given many clues for the readers to create their own assumptions. She had my head whirling in unraveling the mysteries. Hopefully, my long list of possibilities were close enough to the truth.

As I had mentioned in the past, the Dark Kings series was a spinoff of Dark Warriors. Tristan a.k.a. Duncan Kerr was Ian's twin brother. He died immediately in Dark Warriors series. He didn't get his own story. So, I was so glad that Ms. Grant did this splendid twist. Now, he was able to reconcile with his brother and found the love of his life. I greatly appreciate the appearance of the Dark Warriors in this book.

Unfortunately, the author failed to explain why Tristan was able to recollect his repressed memories as Duncan whenever he touched Sammi who had no Druid blood. Also, in the end, I had to assume that Rhi was rescued by Con even though it was not mentioned. Why else Con joined the rescue team if not for Rhi? He didn't come to rescue Denae when she was also captured by the Dark One. The readers would understand what I was trying to relay.

In book two of the Dark Kings series, we meet Tristan, the newest Dragon King. There hadn’t been a new Dragon King in ages so Tristan’s appearance was a shock to put it mildly. While no one knows how he became a Dragon King, his face is instantly familiar as the twin of a Warrior everyone believed to be dead.

Sammi is content with her life running her pub when everything literally blows up in her face. Out of options, she flees to her sister at Dreagan for shelter for a few days to heal and formulate a plan. Unbeknownst to her, she has been pulled into the burgeoning war between the Dragon Kings and their many enemies. The last thing Sammi and Tristan expected or needed in the midst of all the danger surrounding them was the fierce attraction between them.

Donna Grant’s Dark Kings series is such a wonderful breath of fresh air for the paranormal romance genre. She incorporates several different types of otherworldly creatures into the subplot that keeps readers engaged. The series is a nicely done mixture of romance for the main story with just enough action and intrigue for the underlying story to keep the series moving forward.

I've loved this series from the start. I'm so glad Tristan got his own book, I've been dying to know his history, although we haven't learned everything there is to know. Donna is very good at keeping the suspense going, and I'm hoping we will learn how he was made into a Dragon King in the up coming stories. The cast is getting bigger and the plot more intriguing and complex, which I love as it gives you more to get your teeth into. I feel like this book is leading us to a fantastic climax as things start to come to a head and I can't wait for Con's story, I have a feeling it's going to be epic. When a Dragon King falls he falls hard, and he will do anything for his mate, as Tristan proves time and again in this book. The sexual tension between him and Sammi is red hot, and even though being around Sammi forces him to face his past and creates a whole range of feelings that cause confusion and anxiety, he is always truly tender with Sammi. Even when it becomes too much he walks away to give himself time, but he can't stay away too long as the pull to Sammi is too strong. Keep it coming Donna Grant, I'm loving it.
