Dating the Long Way Around (In Which Tony Stark Builds Himself Some Friends

Rate this book
Fandom: The Avengers
Relationships: Steve Rogers/Tony Stark, Clint Barton/Phil Coulson
--------------------------------------------------
Tony Stark was pretty sure the Universe had it out for him. Call it karma, or the natural balance, but on occasion, he had a sneaking suspicion that for every good thing that happened to him, something bad was waiting around the corner.

That being the case, his first real date with Steve Rogers would probably lead to something disastrous. But in that he was, in fact, going on his first real date with Steve, he wasn't sure he cared. Steve was certain he didn't.

ANOTHER GREAT ONE!

This FANFIC is so well-done that I'm hoping the author makes a few more episodes of this.

In this installment, Tony and Steve went out for their FIRST DATE !!! And then New York freezes all over and ice monsters come on to them. XD

I love how she wrote Tony and Steve's want and longing for each other. It was just beautiful!

And there's the adventure and action side of the story. It was good but I had a quite hard time to understand some parts.

The let down in this one is that it's still NOT EXPLICIT. There were some typos too.

And also she's messed up with the Marvel Comics canon. So if you don't like that then be aware.

I'll be reading the next one! Stony FTW!!!

RECOMMENDED!
(and so the rest of the series)

Scifigrl47 always manages to put a smile on my face. This one was no exception. As usual this had all the classic Tony one liners and the HOT Stony chemistry. What didn't do it for me was that there were way too many new characters. It didn't bother me that the author wanted to introduce non MCU characters. Hey this is her story. Plus, it was interesting to see how they reacted to one another. It was fun to have Spidey and some of the others but there were just too many new characters all at once. Sometimes, it was just a name drop. It felt a little forced. Even so, it was still a lot of fun. Oh and I really hope we get to see Steve in the Iron Man silk Pajama bottoms. Spidey better come through for him :)

Hmmm . . . maybe a few too many characters in this one, and a few too many one-liners. Still glad to finally get these two crazy kids together, though.

This was much harder to get through than the others have been. I actually had to take breaks, read other things, and finally read these chapters out of order to be able to finally finish it.

Yes, it was still well-written. Yes, it was fun to see some other characters. But I didn't go into this wanting to spend time with Spiderman and X-men and lesser-known Marvel characters. I wanted to hang out with the Avengers some more, and see Steve and Tony finally get their shit together.

I need to at least take a break from this series after this one, if not give it up entirely. :(

Some Favorite Quotes:
Tony's mouth twitched up on one side, just a little. "I wanted to, you know, have this date be normal, and that's not likely to happen, because I'm on it,"

"What's going on?"
"We don't know, why do you think we know?" Tony asked.
"Because you tend to know these things." Spider-man shrugged.... "Sometimes you cause them.... Most of the time you cause them."

Tony had been pretty sure that he was going to end up in hell one of these days, but he'd hoped that the modern version would just have been him trapped with a Windows tablet, poking helplessly at the worst interface ever created, over and over and over, with no actual ability to interact with anything.

"You're important to me," he said. "And if I have to choose between being your friend or having sex with you, I'd choose being your friend." His face flushed, he added, "I'd really like both, though, really, that is, please?"

"You cannot adopt every lone superhero we find, you know that, right?"

my thought process while reading this:

those flowers though <3

tony calling steve baby *insert keyboard smash here*

THEY'RE LIKE AN OLD MARRIED COUPLE OMG

steve's driving <333

TONY HAD TO BUY AN INSURANCE COMPANY TO GET A POLICY. *dies of laughter*

everyone was betting on when steve and tony would get together, of course. this is my surprised face.

dun dunn dunnnn

and quotes:
Steve, who'd been facing the windows, turned around. And Tony forgot the rest of them were there, because Steve was grinning up at him, wide and happy and real, his eyes bright and his cheeks creased with the force of it.
It was possible that his heart skipped a beat, or maybe the damn arc reactor wasn't seated properly. He gave it a smack with the palm of one hand, just to be sure.

"But this is my first date, it's a date I have been looking forward to for weeks, and if you freak him out to the point where he refuses to go on a second one with me, you and I are going to have words. Short, not so nice words.”

“We have got to get Thor to stop screaming about missing movies at villains, it's absolutely killing our street cred.”

“Don't worry about it, kid. It's him. Everyone wants to hit on him. Everyone. Elderly women. Lesbians. High ranking military officers. Clergy. The President.”

“Everyone wants to hit on Captain America,” Kitty said. “That doesn't classify you as gay, that classifies you as alive.”

Parts of this are definitely 4-4.5-star-worthy (of the chortling and/or the Aaaaww sort, plus a few great bits in the action), but ...
Possibly mainly because I don't read comic books (and thus had little or no prior knowledge of the "surprise guest stars" other than the young Spidey and the early-X-Men-movies version of Logan — Bumbershoot Cummerbund's Dr. Strange movie appearance[s], which postdate the happy-team 'verse of these fics, obviously don't count (even if I were caught up on the MCU movies)) I simply found myself less than totally gripped by the facing-the-big-bad elements and some of the companion-collecting scenes leading up to that point.
Still, I'm in no way saying you shouldn't read it, just that it's not among my favorites of the series, even if Stony do finally get their adorably awkward (fade-to-black) happy ending (or maybe I should say "happy beginning"), so I decided to round down this time.
BTW, I do wish the author would find a good typo-catcher, because this series (and the accompanying "Phil Coulson [Is Not]..." casefiles) deserve to be polished.

5/2025: Hmm, I'd still say it's not one of my favorite *pieces* of this definitely-a-favorite 'verse, so I guess I'll leave it rounded down, but that's far from saying it's not a good story. Also, I did NOT notice a bunch of typos this time, so maybe it *has* had another proofreading pass in the meantime.
