The Do's and Don'ts is a whimsical lesson book aimed at teaching young readers the difference between good and bad behavior/etiquette. In the book Zack and Chloe go from being manner monsters to well-behaved children as they provide samples of typical scenarios that not only young children encounter but can relate to. For example, Zack becomes a Manner Monster when he loses a game, kicking and pouting like a poor sport. In contract, good behavior is then modeled depicting Zack congratulating the winning team. Unlike other etiquette books for children that tell a story or just communicate positive behavior, The Do's and Don'ts compares and contrasts between good and bad behavior. Simply, yet colorfully displayed, are examples of inappropriate behavior and decisions young children may display followed by behavior and decisions that are more socially accepted. Each compare and contrast anecdote is set in the same scene so that young readers can instantly see the differences between good and poor behavior.

Hayley Rose has written a delightful way to sit with your children and read a story to help teach them about manners. She introduces the Manner Monster who finds himself displaying the type of manners we don’t want our children to have and then balances it out by portraying the correct way for children to approach situations using good manners. The book deals with getting along with other children, how to be a good sport, being polite and all the qualities we want our children to possess.
The Illustrations by Mark Sean Wilson are bold and colorful and help to express the intent of the story. I found the expressions depicted on the faces in this book really help lend to the feel for the story.
This is a great book for parents to sit with their children and read and open up a dialogue on showing good manners no matter what the situation.
Books on the topic of manners for children are always needed, and this one is so attention getting! The illustrations are so colorful and full of action. They're wonderful! The Manner Monster is very cute and appealing as he demonstrates the bad manners, which are then reversed by children showing the good manners. The text is large and brief, so as to get the point across of the contrast between good and bad behavior. I would definitely recommend The Do's and Don'ts for homes and schools to support the teaching of good manners, which is something so needed in our society.
As a mother of an introspective 10-year-old boy and an hyper-active daugther of 5, I had to adjust my parenting style to their different personality traits...not an easy task. Human motivation, when it comes to children, can be a tricky business: rewarding, threatening, grounding, scolding, and praising are some of the most common strategies used by parents to guide, lead, and mentor their kids through their development, but are these parenting tools the right way to offer our children the best behavioral model?
Parental pressure, or lack of it (the 'pushy' and the 'permissive' styles), can seriously damage our kids and hinder their self-motivation. It is proven that a gentle and yet authoritative parenting model will more successfully help little boys and girls to develop their inner compass. An intelligent and joyful guiding tool comes from Hayley Rose's etiquette book, The Do's And Don'ts: the benefits of providing our children with an example of community-mindedness and critical thinking, through the colorful and friendly pages of a book rather than the pressure of a controlling and restrictive parenting style, are enormous. Using Hayley's book and similar literature as an 'entertaining' and more relaxed way to guide and communicate with our little loved ones will help both parents and children to face the challenges of growing up and adapting to the world, with serenity and creativity. Great read for kids in pre-K, K, and elementary grades.
Children seem to love books that are written for them. In their language with wonderful pictures to go along with the story. This is exactly what the author and the illustrator did. I don't believe just because it's a children's book that us young at hearters can't enjoy too. I believe one important point with a children's book is the cover. The cover has to be exciting, interesting and have illustrations that will make the child immediately take notice. Children's attention spans are not too great. They bore easy. I feel the author did such a magnificent job of writing this book on the level for children that it kept the child's attention. The book may be a little difficult for some of the young readers with some of the words that were used. But I believe this is the time when, mom, dad, grandparents, babysitter or older brother or sister can help read along with the child and help him pronounce and understand the words. I think this is a good learning and teaching book if the adults take on their job of helping our young ones learn to read. The author also put in a lot of places where laughter was the key. The child must feel the book is fun in order to maintain that attention span. What a marvelous children's book that should be on every child's book shelve. Don't let your child miss out on this book. Go out and get a copy and read to them or with them, it doesn't matter so long as the child is learning and enjoying.
I was given a complimentary copy of DO'S and DON'TS by Haley Rose from PUYB for my view of the book. No other compensation took place.
My kids LOVE books that tell you what is good and what is bad. They always have, so when I saw this book I knew it was a must read for us. For this review, I read the book without the kids and then I let my 1st grade son read it to my kindy daughters. I say I "let" him because he kept asking and it was not my initial plan. He saw the monster on the cover and was immediately drawn to this book. I should note that my son is an advanced reader and while this is an appropriate read aloud for his age, I believe many kids would struggle reading some of the words independently. The kids loved the book. Within a few Do's and Don'ts, my son had transformed it into an interactive read. To me this is the sign of a great read aloud. There was laughter, a lot of "That's not good" for the Don'ts, and even some cheering at one point. The best part was that the kids were bringing up the Manner Monster in everyday settings after they had read the book. This means the story stuck with them and they were trying to use what they learned in the context of their lives. I asked the kids what they liked best. My son said it was funny. My daughter said the pictures. She told me the pictures were good at telling you what happens so now she can read it on her own even though she can not read the words. "Now I can read it to my sister". Overall, it was a hit in our household.
Teaching manners to young children can sometimes be a difficult task. Author Hayley Rose provides a helpful resource in her latest children’s picture book, THE DO’T AND DON’TS.
The book demonstrates what not to do and then tells the right way to respond to the situation. It covers a wide range of topics from eating with your mouth full to being rude and cutting in line to opening the door to strangers and many more.
The illustrations by Mark Sean Wilson are bold and colorful. They re-enforce the advice the author gives. The beautiful drawings will capture the attention of readers of all ages as they bring the story to life.
This charming picture book explains manners in simple terms making learning fun and easy for youngsters. The book will be a great asset for adults with small children.
Through the actions in the book, youngsters will learn how not to be a ‘Manner Monster’ as they begin practicing good manners. This delightful book will help transform youngsters into well-behaved children, teaching them good manners as they have fun reading.
FTC Full Disclosure - This book was sent to me as part of the author’s virtual blog tour in hopes I would review it. However, receiving the complimentary copy did not influence my review.
As a mother of 3 I am constantly teaching my kids about manners. Hayley Rose did a wonderful job differentiating between good and bad manners. The kids adored that the "monster" did all the bad things while the "real" kids did all the good things. As we were reading this book it opened the door for some great discussions with my youngest son (7) about when and how he chooses good manners unlike the monsters that pick the bad habits. The book is filled with beautifully done illustrations that help the message the author is trying to convey and keep the kids engaged in the story. The book came with a glossy book marker advertising other books by the author that my daughter quickly claimed as hers. The hard cover and thick, sturdy pages and big bold colorful words makes this a great buy for the younger kids. I can easily recommend this book for anyone with kids from 4 to early elementary years.
Disclaimer:I received a free copy of this book via pumpupyourbooks.com in exchange for my honest opinion and review.
The Do’s and Don’ts is wonderful little book about teaching kids the difference between good and bad manners. I loved how the ‘manner monster’ demonstrates the bad manners, while the opposite page explains what to do to demonstrate the good manners. These are all shown in a kid-friendly way and in situations that kids would find themselves in.
The illustrations in this book are amazing! They are very bold and bright and seem to jump out at you. My 6 month old grandchild was completely transfixed on the pages when I was reading this.
I’ve read this book several times so far with my 5-year-old, and I can honestly say that I’ve noticed he is more aware of his manners when out in public, as well as at home. This book has been an enjoyable fun read that has opened discussions that he has applied to his everyday life and that is why I give The Do’s and Don’ts a 5-star rating!
Thank you to author, Hayley Rose, and Pump Up Your Book Tours for providing me a copy for review. Although I received a complimentary copy, all thoughts and opinions are my own.
Teaching children manner’s is always a bit challenging, and here is a cute way to help. If you have a preschooler, the illustrations help tell the story in a bright and colorful way. The school age child will also love, and mine did, the monster, he is so bright and drew their eyes immediately. There are pictures first of the wrong way to do things…like talking with your mouth full. Here we have the monster sitting at the table, gabbing along, and dropping food out of his mouth. One the cross page is a family sitting together, and showing that all food is swallowed before they begin chatting. The vivid images in the book highlight and reinforce what you have been teaching your child. Funny there is one about jumping on the furniture, and our oldest was told that today, and really brought it home.
I received this book through Pump Up Your Book Virtual Tours, and was not required to give a positive review.
As a mother and a therapist I am constantly look for books with "good" messages to use as bibliotherapy. I love books that teach social skills and good values. Sometimes it is hard to find books that the little ones 3-6 will identify with or sit still and listen. Many little ones struggle with manners. Its just so hard to remember all the dos and don'ts!
Hayley Rose's newest book, The Do's and Don'ts, is a winner to help reinforce the importance of good manners for the little ones. What a wonderful etiquette book! I love that it contrasts between positive and negative behavior. Not only does the story teach children what not to do it gives them an example of what to do instead. My 7 year old daughter loved the colorful illustrations. She thought the Manner Monster was very cute. Although she was sad that he had bad manners.
What an awesome little book, Haley Rose has hit the mark with this one. Add to that the wonderful illustrations and you have a winner in The Do's & Don'ts. The Do's & Don'ts teaches children not only about manners but there are a few safety tips too. First we meet the Manners Monster who does things the wrong way. He/she is a most colorful character. The Manners Monster shows the don'ts of a situation and on the facing page we see the right way to behave. In each scene we see the reaction of the child's friends or other people. This would be a great way to start a conversation with your child about manners. If you are the parent, or grandparent, of a young child you need this book. I can also see this being used by anyone who works with small children. After all the best way to learn anything is when you are young.
We received this book as part of a blog tour to give an honest review. It will be a part of the http://kachildrensbookreviews.blogspo... on March 20th This is one book I am so glad that we got to read and review. It was a perfect read for me to read to K. As it shows the Do's and Don'ts of behavior. I liked how it went from the "bad" behavior to "good" behavior. Which was perfect to teach kids okay this is the behavior you do not want to do, but instead do this good behavior. I am hoping that some of these lessons within the story helps K out. Especially the poor sportsman ship. That really hit home for K. The illustrations are great and colorful. Highly recommend this book to those that want to teach their kids the difference between good and bad behavior.
Kids will enjoy learning about kindness and good manners in this fun new book by award-winning author Hayley Rose. From waiting until you’ve swallowed a bite before speaking to keeping your napkin on your lap, from saying excuse me to knocking before entering a room, and from remembering to say “thank you” to asking permission to use another person’s belongings and more, The Do’s and Don’ts will help teach your children the best way to treat others. Youngsters will enjoy the crazy antics of the Manner Monster, while parents will appreciate the good manners and everyday kindnesses shared throughout the book’s 38 pages. The vibrant artwork by Mark Sean Wilson encourages readers to keep turning the pages.
Every home with kids should own a copy of The Do’s and Don’ts. Highly recommended.
This is a cute picture book for kids to read and enjoy. The pictures are bright and colorful letting kids know what to do and what not to do. I love the one for the napkin - great ideas for Do's and Don't. This would be a great book to read to kids a few times a month as you talk with them about manners and why they are so important. Kids don't always know why they have to do things this is a great reminder with cute pictures to help them remember. Nothing is better than having someone comment about how polite and well mannered your child is.
Read this book to your kids and help them learn why and how to be polite and well mannered. Great ideas and pictures so children will enjoy the book and learn to understand the concepts of it.
This is a cute book that does a really great job of teaching kids manners. The illustrations show that you are a "Manner Monster" when you are doing the "don'ts" and why that is a bad thing. The language is very straightforward, and there's not too much text per page, so your child's attention doesn't wander.
My 5 year old absolutely loved this book, which I am very glad of, because he is very often a "Manner Monster". We've read it so many times now, it's like he's reading it to me! I'm glad that this book was able to teach him manners in a way he could easily understand...and which I am sure he likes better than his mom and dad scolding him.
Finally, now that I’m an adult, I have the book I sought as a child.
Hayley Rose’s “Do’s and Dont’s” is not some flimsy six-page pamphlet, it’s forty-eight pages of vibrant and expressive illustrations and important messages for children—for people of all ages actually. I just don’t see a lot of adults sneeze into their arm.
I don’t know when the thin children’s book became the norm. What I do know is that even children want to just keep reading when they like a book. And my guess is kids will reach for “Do’s and Don’t’s” again and again before bedtime.
The Do's and Don'ts is a delightful little book that every parent of little ones should have. It teaches the child the right way to behave in certain situations, everything all children should be taught. It is a little book on ettiquette, such as saying please, thank you and excuse me. It also stresses on not being a bully, knocking on doors, and not to be rude. Full of colorful illustrations as visual aides to help with these little lessons. I highly recommend this cute little book! I will certainly be passing this book along to a little one in my family!
This is a wonderful children's picture book. It's perfect for preschool through elementary aged children. This book has the do's and don'ts for good manners. It has great lessons like saying "thank you", waiting for turns, saying "please", talking with an appropriate sound level of voice for indoors, and not opening doors to strangers. The book is beautifully illustrated in bright bold colors that are appealing to the eye. The font of the book is in bold white letters and very easy to read.
This book teaches children about manners and how to show them. It compares and contrasts good and bad behavior. There are many examples of inappropriate behavior and decisions young children may show followed by behavior and decisions that are more positive. This book serves as a great reminder of how we should and should not act. I would use this book in my classroom to teacher children about manners and appropriate behaviors to use both inside and outside of the classroom.
the message is so important for children of all ages. My 4 year old niece was thrilled with the book. I had to read it 6 times before she allowed me to stop. It is a must in every household to support what parents are teaching their children.
It is a beautiful book that teaches children good manners in a very colourful way. My kids were quite interested in reading it and created their own do's and don'ts as well. I highly recommend it to the parents who want to teach their children about good behaviour.
Teaching kids about good manners is tough, especially young kids who have very little interest in learning what they should and should not do. But The Do's and Don'ts by Hayley Rose is an adorable book of lessons on how to practice good manners that will surely capture their attention.
The colorful, fun illustrations by Mark Sean Wilson make a dull topic much more engaging. And the choice of lessons is great, speaking from the perspective of a mother! The book covers everything from saying "Thank you" and "Excuse Me" to lessons on hygiene, sportsmanship and letting people get off the elevator before boarding. Rose even addresses some important safety lessons.
The Do's and Don'ts is a great book to share with young kids ~ and perhaps older kids as well since most could use a reminder of some of these rules!
I received a free copy of this book for an honest review.
What a cute book! Not only does The Do's and Don'ts have cute illustrations but it contains some great etiquette advice for children.
For each "Don't" in the book, the next page has an example of a "Do." The "Don't" has a picture of a little red monster doing the wrong thing. The next page has a cute child doing the right thing. For example, one "Don't" is jumping and playing on the furniture. The corresponding "Do" page shows a child jumping and playing on a playground instead.
I think this is a great book for young readers. It's fun to read and it teaches manners at the same time.
