Disappointing...
I really tried to like this book, but I just couldn't. As an avid reader, I've read many autobiographies and biographies, this is very low on the totem pole of enjoyable reads in that genre. I think part of the problem is that it was written like a novel, not an autobiography. I think the writing style for an autobiography is very different from a novel. There was much of the book that wasn't necessary to her story and difficult to get through. She had no problem informing the reader of her family's many accomplishments, whether it was her siblings or grandparents, their status/standing in the community, numerous times. It felt braggadocious. I had read several of her novels in the past and they were okay. I enjoyed Discretion the most. I think that it takes something to open up your life to the public at large, but the ones I've appreciated most are the ones that were raw in their honesty, real and down to earth. Richard Pryor, Etta James and Johnnie Cochran are probably three of the best I've ever read. Honestly, this was boring and you didn't feel as if you knew her in some way. I think you finish the best autobiographies with a sense that you kinda know the person. How can you not when a person is telling their "life" story, sharing some of their innermost thoughts, feelings and life experiences. Every human being has a story to tell, but not all are meant to be a book. Welp, on to the next read...I need something with substance. 😊🤔
