While this follows Ironbrand, it is a prequel that tells of the great man who made the swords the brothers carry in the first book. It fills in the legend in a 'fabulous' way. That is, it's part fable, part action packed adventure, & thoroughly magical complete with mysterious wizards & prophecies. Very much standard fantasy, but really good both because & in spite of that, if that makes any sense.
Five decades ago, I recited the first few pages of The Hobbit, or There and Back Again from memory in front of my 6th grade class. Since then, I've read a lot more & standard fantasy usually turns me off now. I don't know why or how Morressy has made this so palatable, but it's a really enjoyable read. Highly recommended.
On to Kingsbane, the next in the series. I've got all 4 books & read them soon after they were published, but I don't think I've ever read them all in a row or in the proper order. It's about time!
In 1984, a friend gave me this book and I was addicted to the fantasy genre ever since. Today, it doesn't really stand the test of time from my younger years but it will always be one of my favorites.
