Political extremism runs rampant in Spain, unleashing a savage tidal wave of death and destruction. But when sixty innocents, including the family of a U.S. senator, are brutally massacred in the terrorist ambush of a tourist train, Phoenix Force is dispatched to Madrid on a mission of bloody retribution.
Their "intrusion" greeted with hostile resentment by Spanish Security, the Force must dodge killing fire from both sides of the law- from a ruthless foe in front of them, and from vicious "allies" at their backs.
Phoenix Force is a series of action-adventure novels first published in 1982 by American Gold Eagle publishers. It is a spin-off of the Executioner series created by Don Pendleton.
Phoenix Force is one of two neutralization teams working for Stony Man, a top-secret anti-terrorist organization. As with The Executioner, the Phoenix Force novels have been written by a succession of authors under the pseudonym Gar Wilson. In 1991, Gold Eagle combined Phoenix Force with another Executioner spin-off series, Able Team, and launched the Stony Man book series, which is still being published as of 2005.
The Force is in Spain to combat a rash of murders of tourists. It seems that a certain group doesn't want Spain to join the European market. They threaten more deaths until Spain pulls out of the deal. Phoenix Force throws their muscle around to stop them.
Closer to a 3.5. It's action packed for sure and it has a straight forward plot that mostly makes sense. However, it's a middle of the road volume in the series. This one has the force up against terroists in Spain who are killing random tourists including a bunch of Americans. PF is tasked at finding out who is doing this and to end it one way or the other. They also seem to be getting push back from the Spanish authorities who seem put out by having an American backed group helping out.
Recommended if you are a fan of these, it's typical of the series. Though that's not a bad thing.
My sentimental favorite book in the Phoenix Force series, by simple virtue of the fact that I happened to meet the author— the REAL author, Paul Glen Neuman, not Gar Wilson, which is just a blanket pseudonym— back when I first purchased and read the novel back in 1988 (when I was a mere 13 y/o), and Paul was cool enough to autograph it for me. Fun-filled and action-packed, and gives me a hankering to visit España (one of my ancestral countries). And it also reminds me why David McCarter is my favourite character in the series.
