Akira Toriyama (鳥山明) was a Japanese manga artist and character designer. He first achieved mainstream recognition for creating the popular manga series Dr. Slump, before going on to create Dragon Ball (his most famous work) and acting as a character designer for several popular video games such as the Dragon Quest series, Chrono Trigger, and Blue Dragon. Toriyama came to be regarded as one of the most important authors in the history of manga with his works highly influential and popular, particularly Dragon Ball, which many manga artists cite as a source of inspiration.
He earned the 1981 Shogakukan Manga Award for best shōnen/shōjo manga with Dr. Slump, and it went on to sell over 35 million copies in Japan. It was adapted into a successful anime series, with a second anime created in 1997, 13 years after the manga ended.
His next series, Dragon Ball, would become one of the most popular and successful manga in the world. Having sold 260 million copies worldwide, it is one of the best-selling manga series of all time and is considered a key work in increasing manga circulation to its peak in the mid-1980s and mid-1990s. Overseas, Dragon Ball's anime adaptations have been more successful than the manga and are credited with boosting anime's popularity in the Western world. In 2019, Toriyama was decorated a Chevalier of the French Ordre des Arts et des Lettres for his contributions to the arts.
In October 2024, Toriyama was inducted into the Harvey Awards Hall of Fame.

EN Freezer has been defeated by Son Goku, but as usual, Goku showed him mercy in the end, allowing him to escape—badly wounded.

Now, Freezer is back, determined to conquer Earth.

But just as chaos is about to unfold, a mysterious warrior appears and defeats both Freezer and his father in a matter of seconds.

This unknown fighter then warns Goku and his friends: in three years, a new and powerful threat will emerge—and they must be ready for it.

--

In my view Freeza should have been the ultimate Dragon Ball villain. The most powerful being in the universe, until defeated by the Super Saiyan.

Then, suddenly Freeza returns and the mysterious Trunks shows up. It was certainly a bold way to introduce the new addition to the cast, and he's a solid character. But to easily defeat Freeza and even his dad King Cold was a bit of a cheap way to show how the next arc will have villains EVEN MORE POWERFUL.

(I mean, they blow up planets, what did it even mean at this point to be so powerful...)

I will have some thoughts to share about the upcoming Cell Saga in future volumes. I wonder if it should have ended before, but in any case it was certainly interesting to keep up with the science fiction evolution of Dragon Ball, by shifting from space opera to time travel.

The insane fight between Son Goku as the Super Saiyan and Freeza on the dying planet Namek concludes in the first third of the book. As you’d expect, it’s very dramatic and tense, even if you know Son Goku’s going to win. And, of course, afterwards everyone who died is brought back to life so all’s well that ends well!

THEN.

I knew Son Goku was coming back, but Freeza? My heart sank and I thought this was going to be the first Dragon Ball Z book that I would hate. Because at this point, I’m done with Freeza. The fact that he’s been patched up and brought his bigger, more powerful dad (yeah, he was a kid!) with him to Earth made me feel tired all of a sudden - Akira Toriyama beating this storyline deep into the ground, etc.

Well, me of little faith! I should’ve known that Toriyama knew dredging Freeza back up would annoy his readers which is why he’s used here as an introduction to a powerful new character: Trunks! And he’s a good guy for once!

I won’t go into his backstory because it’s full of fun spoilers, about his parentage, about … actually I’ll stop there! But he sets up the next big Dragon Ball Z storyline: killer androids! Dr Gero, who worked for the Red Ribbon Army in the original Dragon Ball series, has created some androids that’ve become too powerful and self-aware and have gone on a rampage in South City - only Son Goku and co. can stop them!

What really dragged the book down for me was seeing Goku hitting his wife Chi-Chi in one panel! Even if he didn’t mean to hit her so hard, he did mean to hit her, which makes him kind of a dick! I was very disappointed and quite shocking to see that side of him. I mean, she was screaming at his face but still, you don’t smack your wife around, Goku! I guess becoming the Super Saiyan shortened his temper or something? It was still jarring to see in a kids’ book!

Dragon Ball Z Vol 12 is basically a bridge book. It wraps up the Freeza storyline once and for all, resets the characters, and then sets up the next story arc. At the moment the androids don’t seem very interesting but I’m sure Toriyama will make it work. Let’s just ease off on the domestic violence, eh?

This volume officially ends the Freeza Saga with a bit of an Ex Machina style move as a new super strong character pops out of nowhere (a common occurrence in this series). The new character Trunks is pretty interesting and the Red Ribbon Army from early on in Dragon Ball is back with a new threat as Dr. Gero is creating super power androids.

The first third, concluding the fight between Goku and Freeza, is simply amazing. Loved every bit of it! And it's actually the only reason this got two stars instead of one.

Because after that first part... well, to be fair, it was probably impossible to top the Goku-Freeza showdown with anything, really. But the rest of the volume is a disappointment, a major slump in terms of both emotional and martial content, with the coincidental return of Freeza and Goku, over a year later, to Earth, just as a setup for the appearance of a mysterious warrior from the future. Trunks must save the day in the absence of Goku, and while the reveal of Trunk's parentage was a really fun part, the ease with which he dispatched Freeza and his nasty dad was rather jarring. And then we get the forewarning about evil androids soon to be made by a mad scientist, and the decision to wait for them and train hard just doesn't make any sense. Aargh. That's just so lazy.

Honestly, I hoped we had seen the last of the Red Ribbon Army a long time ago. Not to mention that the new Terminator vibes are somehow way less alluring than the old Superman vibes ;)

One of the weakest volumes to date, I'm afraid. Still moderately enjoyable, but nowhere near the usual levels I came to expect from Toriyama's DB and DBZ.

After more than a year-long hiatus, I am reading Dragon Ball again! Man, did I miss this series.

So in the last couple of days I've read six volumes, finishing the entirety of the Freeza/Planet Namek arc. While I think this was the weakest big arc in the series yet, I still found the payoff of Goku finally becoming Super Sayan and kicking Freeza's ass to be very satisfying.

I wasn't a huge fan of a bunch of characters constantly dying and resurrecting, though. DBZ now feels like that 'Supernatural' TV show — every main character died and came back to life so many times that the whole concept of character death became absolutely useless, and doesn't add anything but annoyance to the story anymore.

Still, I am really enjoying reading Dragon Ball again. I missed this silly and fun manga about a bunch of guys constantly fighting each other in a more and more ridiculous fashion. It's not the most intellectual read out there (it's a kid's book, after all), but it is very entertaining.

A quick note on the coloured edition:

I've actually came back and read the Freeza arc in these beautiful editions: Dragon Ball Full Color Freeza Arc Volume 1. There are eight of those volumes (three for the Sayan arc and five for Freeza), and they're gorgeous! Colour adds so much more charm and beauty to this already charming and beautiful manga. It's a shame that the entire series isn't available in this format, although I'm sure it will be sooner or later. To any fan of Dragon Ball Z, I would highly recommend checking these out.

The first part concludes the Goku vs. Freeza battle and is followed up with some suspenseful back-and-forth on who and if some people are still alive.

Then begins the epic introduction of my boy Trunks and there's no better way to recalibrate the whole cast than by showcasing his strength against a known powerful foe.

What follows is a silly premise (Saiyans preferring a difficult battle than to prevent it from ever happening) to a new android story arc that allows everyone three years to get better.

I think this would have been the single best point to end the series on. Goku is now the strongest in the universe - having explicitly beaten up the previous holder of the title - and to do so he had to realize an ancient prophecy and become the chosen warrior of cosmos. He survives the battle by some miracle and enters the realm of new adventures and strange odysseys in space, things we would not need to see to know they'd be exciting.

And then indeed we don't get to see them, and so the rug is pulled from under our feet and it all becomes rather less satisfying in hindsight.

Here on starts the gradual downhill. Here the villains become less believable and the writing suffers a bit. There are still good moments, still great emotional highs, still a few laughs and the occasional small cry, still character moments and growth and surprises - but none of them ever again come as high as they did at the end of Frieza Saga, and as we go on forward, they continue to further decay.

But that'll be later. In this volume we get Trunks, the best part of whom is his parentage - they'd barely even interacted before now and were so hilariously incompatible that it was kind of funny, hopefully by design. Poor Yamcha, though.

Everything after Volume 11 is filler. Irrelevant that it is still written and drawn by Toriyama. If a series continues only because the publisher wants more money, and moreover plot and characters of said continuation are constantly modified under the pressure of toy makers, then it is filler. Dragon Ball should have ended (and in my heart does end) at the conclusion of the 'Freezer Saga'.

In this volume I like Trunks and Mecca Freezer design.

I have so many things to say about this volume, and I tried to write them down, but because they’re all important to me and all over the place, I just can’t and won’t be able to eloquently express my complete thoughts.

That being said, here’s what I will say, in no particular order. Goku’s ability to see redemption in a person and to forgive them, no matter how awful and dangerous (and backstabbing) their character, is his actual power. Everyone likes to call him utterly stupid for this, but that Toriyama creates these characters and their eventual redemptions (taking years and sometimes DECADES in the making!!) sure is something beautiful to behold.
This is why I’ll always love Goku as a great protagonist, because even though I have to suffer people who only like him for the fights and fashion (more on that later), he has pure and interesting complexities for a someone who loves fighting and eating.

The pacing for this volume in particular is ridiculous, but you can’t forget that this would be published on a weekly basis for Shonen Jump.
Speaking of pacing, this leads to the elephant in the room I’ve probably not yet mentioned, and that’s the anime. Toriyama’s art and direction is the blueprint, no question, but playing the anime sequences in my head while certain iconic scenes happen in the manga are almost too magnificent to behold. Whew. Trunks and Freeza!!! Trunks and his chest out, omg. Goku with his ripped to shreds uniform, omg. Bulma and literally everything she’s ever worn. The BADMAN shirt, omg.

THE FASHION IS UNDENIABLE!!! They got that shit oooooonnnn!!! But seriously, part of the clothing choices was inspired by street fashion born from black and brown people, and it in turn inspired these marginalized communities. The number of people named Goku/Gohan/Piccolo/etc in Latine countries is not zero!!
This is slightly related, but the way that Toriyama draws a figure can be quite beautiful, in a masculine way. (Look at that, I guess I call men beautiful too. I guess I’m open-minded as helllll)

In conclusion, I wish the driving license episode was created in the manga, but that just shows that filler episodes used to mean something in this world.

This one was so fun, as Trunks comes in and when Freeza and King Cold lands he is able to make quick work of them and when Goku comes and we learn of his real history and who he really is and the whole time travel saga and the premonitions of the Androids and soon CELL its so exciting stuff! This manga got crazy good there in that moment and then we have the Z-warriors train together and 3 years later on that island their next big threat is getting ready: ANDROIDS! Its gonna get better here now! Also I love how this felt like a breather from the long Freeza arc but doves really nicely into the next arc and also does a little time jump and gives people time to train, the art is just so soothing to the eyes!

And I have offically caught up to the anime. When I was a senior in high school, I started to watch Dragon Ball Z on the episode of Trunks entering. There was sooo many references that I had no idea about. I did not realize how much of a threat Freeza was, the only scene of Freeza I saw was the scene of him being sliced up by trunks, so he did not feel threatening at all.

I started Dragon Ball to know the story line from the beginning. I now get to read what I have already watched (up until Super, then the mystery happens again).

I am excited. The story goes forth, and I will be on the ship with the captain.

In this volume, we get the end of the Namek saga, we get some time with King Cold and Mecha Frieza, the incredibly badass and mysterious first of appearance of Trunks, the start of Bulma and Vegeta's romance, and the beginning of the Android arc. Plus several time skips. That's a lot of great stuff to pack in to one volume, but the pacing is very well done.

As much as I would love to linger in the time getting skipped over, especially the Bulma and Vegeta moments, I can't deny Toriyama had an amazing sense for how best to keep the story moving. And that's what anime filler is for I guess, lol.

The Frieza Arc has finally come to an end and with that we have a 4 year time jump. A mysterious man from the future tells our gang that they will all be killed by androids. They set off to train and meet again only to find out these androids have no chi. It is time for the Android Arc to begin (my least favorite arc).

Continuing on from where I left off from the full color Freeza arc, this is the start of a brand new arc with Trunks and evil androids! I love that the series has just fully shifted into science fiction now. The fighting is great as usual and I hope this arc can live up to how amazing the last one was!

Previously on Dragon Ball Z

(I) Goku is still fighting with Freeza as the planet Namek is on self-destruct.

(II) All of Goku's friends were able to get all the Dragon Balls and grant the wish of resurrecting all the Namekians and people who were murdered by Freeza and his men.

(III) The gang and the Namekians have been able to evacuate to planet Earth and now they must wait to see if Goku survives and Freeza dies.

That is what you missed on Dragon Ball Z!

I love the reactions of everyone who has been killed come back to life wondering what the hell happened and why they are alive. Shit if I was brought back to life I would be jumping up and down of joy to be granted another chance of life. Now back to the story..

Goku and Freeza have reached the ends of their wits and Goku decides to call it quits. He has given mercy to Freeza because he realize that he has outmatch Freeza is strength and abilities and there is no point of fighting if it will become pathetic and less honorable. Freeza is on the brink of death and Goku is nice enough to give some of his Chi to Freeza to escape but sadly Freeza uses that power to kill Goku and fails.
Goku has enough and shoots back a blast that put a whole in the ground.

He believes he has killed Freeza and now he is trying to find a way to escape the planet and the moment we able to see whether or not he escapes, the planet explodes and everyone believes that Goku is dead. Everyone now has to wait for 130 days as the Namekian Dragon Balls get fully recharged and they summon back all the people who are still dead and they ask to bring back Goku to life.

Luckily for us the dragon tells us that Goku is still alive but does not want to come home yet so they leave him be. We get to see another wish granting event that takes place 130 days and the Namekians have found a new planet to inhabit and a year goes by without Goku's presence on earth. Now one day, a ship is arriving to Earth and it is no other than Freeza with his father King Cold. King Cold looks like Freeza in his first transformation and for Freeza he looks completely different as half of his body is now robotic.

He is excited to land on Earth to destroy the planet and fight Goku but it is obvious that Freeza is pathetic fighter and weaker since the last time we witnessed him. I completely forgot that Freeza survives and that whole drama but Freeza only last for few moments because we have a new super saiyan up our sleeve. While Goku is in the process of coming back to Earth, we meet a young teenager named Trunks who with his samurai sword chops up and kills both Freeza and King Cold like in 2.5 seconds.

Everyone is shocked to witness this event and they believe that maybe Trunks is evil until Goku arrives to Earth. Trunks has a private discussion with Goku and it is revealed that Trunks is the child of both Vegeta and Bulma. I was already spoiled of that because of the video games and anime but it is still pretty shocking considering Vegeta acts like a heartless individual. We learn that somehow Goku dies of a virus which Trunks brought the future cure and tells them these androids will be created in 3 years and they will be unstoppable and only Goku is the one who can save humanity. Goku promises to help destroy the androids and keeps Trunks secret to himself.

We flash forward into 3 years later and the gang has trained harder than ever and lucky enough Bulma gave birth to Trunks. The gang meet at the exact location of Trunks instructions and lo and behold we witness that the Androids are robots so you cannot detect any chi and they are force that Goku has never witness in his life. Now the action is on and all hell is going to break loose.

I am curious about these androids because I remember them vividly but it makes you wonder how are robots unstoppable if any type of blast from our crew could destroy them. They must be wired a certain way that is able to detect any attack in super light speed and is away to deflect and attack accurately than any fighter! We won't find out what to expect until next time so stay tuned for another episode of Dragon Ball Z...

This was a fantastic read. This series continues to get better and better. This is an absolute thrilling ride. I really enjoyed the action and battles. In this volume, Future Trunks arrives to Earth. He reveals that he is the son of Vegeta. I really like the fight scenes and I was impressed by the story as it involves the future and present. I am happy that Trunks defeated Mecha Freeza and King Cold. I can't wait for Volume 13. Overall, an amazing read.

Volume 12 finally gives us the end of the Freeza arc and begins the next saga! For those anime fans, we're on our way into season 4! I genuinely spoil these volumes in all my reviews but there's some cool reveals in this one that would take some of the fun out of it if it's ruined...so spoiler warning for content ahead.
Despite being the Legendary Super Saiyan, Goku isn't just decimating Freeza. He gives him multiple chances of mercy but Freeza, literally in pieces, refuses to stop until Goku deflects his final blow and blows him up in a disgusting illustration. Then Namek blows up! Through a complicated series of Dragon Ball wishes, the Namekians were transported to Earth and being super chill beings are cool with waiting until they get their own wish...so the friends in King Kai's world are revived finally and everyone is happy as Namek is also brought back. Goku is MIA but Shenlong assures everyone he's all right, just choosing not to come back to Earth yet. 3 years later the Z-Warriors sense Freeza plus one's power approaching. Turns out Freeza's Papa, King Cold, stitched him back together with some mechanical parts. Along with the big bads is a teenage boy with ominous news about some androids coming to take them out. When Goku DOES finally appear, the youth reveals himself as Trunks...he comes from the future and is the son of Bulma and Vegeta of all people. He also gives Goku some medicine for a heart disease that's gonna take him out. The friends make a plan to meet up at the specified time/place to take out the new threat in 3 years time.

It's a fun intro to a fun new saga! Glad to finally be done with Freeza. Time travel is an irritating twist, but I think it's done fairly okay in this series. I'll definitely be giving it a more critical eye this particular read through.
