Akira Toriyama (鳥山明) was a Japanese manga artist and character designer. He first achieved mainstream recognition for creating the popular manga series Dr. Slump, before going on to create Dragon Ball (his most famous work) and acting as a character designer for several popular video games such as the Dragon Quest series, Chrono Trigger, and Blue Dragon. Toriyama came to be regarded as one of the most important authors in the history of manga with his works highly influential and popular, particularly Dragon Ball, which many manga artists cite as a source of inspiration.
He earned the 1981 Shogakukan Manga Award for best shōnen/shōjo manga with Dr. Slump, and it went on to sell over 35 million copies in Japan. It was adapted into a successful anime series, with a second anime created in 1997, 13 years after the manga ended.
His next series, Dragon Ball, would become one of the most popular and successful manga in the world. Having sold 260 million copies worldwide, it is one of the best-selling manga series of all time and is considered a key work in increasing manga circulation to its peak in the mid-1980s and mid-1990s. Overseas, Dragon Ball's anime adaptations have been more successful than the manga and are credited with boosting anime's popularity in the Western world. In 2019, Toriyama was decorated a Chevalier of the French Ordre des Arts et des Lettres for his contributions to the arts.
In October 2024, Toriyama was inducted into the Harvey Awards Hall of Fame.

--

EN Several years have passed since Cell’s defeat. Son Gohan has grown up, now attending school and trying to live a normal life in society. Son Goten, Son Goku’s second son, also makes his first appearance, while Trunks, just a year older, already shows his development.

A new World Martial Arts Tournament is announced, bringing together almost all of the familiar characters. Among the participants is Videl, the daughter of Hercule and now a close friend of Son Gohan.

Thus begins a new and exciting chapter.

I’ve noticed since the start of the series how little there is in the way of placing the characters within the semi-real world environment, seeing what their everyday lives are like when they’re not saving the world. For the most part the series has been our hero Goku and his friends fighting the latest villain. It’s never bothered me because the stories are so good and you don’t really need to see how Goku or whoever will interact with ordinary civilians. Well, Akira Toriyama decides to address that with Son Gohan in this volume and I hope he doesn’t do it again!

It’s been years since Cell was defeated and Son Goku died, and Son Gohan has grown up and become a young man, going to high school (he always wanted to be a scholar, not a fighter). Because, for contrived reasons, the world thinks Hercule saved them from Cell, they’ve renamed his home city Herculopolis (in the original manga, Hercule is called Mr Satan - does that mean Herculopolis was originally called Satan City or something?). Goku, Gohan and everyone have to remain hidden because of Superman reasons but Gohan still does some light superheroing as the secret Golden Warrior (his guise when he turns Super Saiyan).

The first half of the book has an Ultimate Spider-Man vibe to it as teen Gohan has to juggle school life with his duties as the Golden Warrior and then later as Saiyaman, his other alter ego. There’s also some weird Amazing Spider-Man movie moments like when he plays baseball for the first time and jumps 30 feet into the air, hovering while holding the ball, and then later gets a baseball thrown in his face at full force and it doesn’t even faze him in the least, and no-one says anything. Oh and the Golden Warrior looks identical to Gohan, wearing the same clothes, except he has yellow hair. Did no-one put any of this together? New kid Gohan shows up the same time as the Golden Warrior does AND Gohan can fly and is invincible - duh, maybe they’re the same person?

I didn’t hate the Gohan half the book, I just thought it was dull. I can see Toriyama was aiming for comedy in some parts but it was a total flatliner. And mixing in real world people with superheroes like Gohan really didn’t work - that’s why he’s never done it before, because it doesn’t make any sense that the real world people would be that stupid. Except for Videl, Hercule’s daughter and obvious love interest for Gohan, who figures it out and demands Gohan teach her how to fly, etc. Well, at least Toriyama’s trying to include some strong female characters in the series.

The second half of the book is taken up with training for another Strongest Under the Heavens tournament. If I didn’t know Buu was on the way, I’d say this series should just end - Toriyama really hasn’t got anything left and is running on fumes at this point. New characters abound: apparently Goku left behind another son, that he didn’t see before he died, called Goten, who looks identical to Son Goku as a kid. Also, Kuririn hooked up with #18, the android/cyborg/whatever chick (the guy’s options are limited, he has no nose!) and they had a kid: no name, because who cares? No idea how they accomplished that either. Kuririn also grew his hair out which is just weird to see.

I suppose it’s cool that Goku’s back from the dead for the tournament and Goten and Trunks’ inevitable match will be fun but when the group arrive at the tournament, Piccolo says something that sums up how I feel about Dragon Ball Z at this point. Goku says “The stage is bigger than before” and Piccolo says “but the soul is smaller”. By this volume, DBZ is hugely popular but nowhere near as good as the earlier books as if becoming bigger has taken something intrinsic away from it.

This volume is a slow read because so much of it is boring and it’s hard to get excited about seeing our heroes fight one another for the umpteenth time for nothing other than money (maybe again Toriyama’s commenting on the popularity of the series as a money-making machine rather than art?). Volume 20 is definitely one of the weakest DBZ books.

Dragon Ball should have ended with Cell, we all know that, but it continued and it was pretty fun even if the issues with long-form storytelling and overpowering were more apparent by the Buu saga.

We're near the end now. It's years later and Gohan grew up. The story seemed to end find with him as the heir apparent, and there was already a tournament last saga. Still, Gohan is a high school student who's now also a funny superhero and what's next but... another tournament.

Also can't help but throw Goku in there coming back to life, which detracted from Gohan's story. It's just want the fans wanted. A lesson perhaps in the dangers of continuing a story too long...

And the world-building was always loose and weird in Dragon Ball. Nobody remembers the previous tournaments with these super powered characters? They really don't believe in it, and buy that Hercule Satan is the champion? Ok (Well it is ultimately a comedy series)

Lastly, the new character of little Goten: Who is of course another version of none other than Goku

Doesn't make sense that he could suddenly become Super Saiyan but who was counting at this point!

The Cell storyline got wrapped up last volume, so we've entered into a time of peace and jump forward a few years. The first few pages had me worried - all of a sudden Dragon Ball is looking like a high school drama! Gohan is now a teenager and wants to live a normal life and go to high school. There's some violence and crime in the city, so he wears a mask and fights crime. Thankfully this doesn't go on for too long, it's pretty funny and doesn't overstay its welcome.

Gohan meets Hercule's daughter Videl in class. She figures out his secret identity and wants to learn how to fly. Later she tells Gohan to enter the "Strongest Under the Heavens tournament" or she'll tell people about his identity.

All of our favourite Dragon Ball characters get back together to enter the tournament. Yet another tournament!

Goku, down in heaven, is so excited about the tournament he uses his one free pass to come back to Earth for the day (like his grandfather did in an early Dragon Ball volume).

One of the more dense volumes of this series. A lot less pages of just pure action.

This could have been better. A transitory volume between story arcs, it tries to lighten up the mood with showing Gohan's antics in the real world. It is funny in places, breaking the fourth wall occasionally, but not as original or quirky as Toriyama got us accustomed to. Too much of a Superman/Spider-Man vibe, of being so different that even the attempts at not standing out make one stand out all the more ;). And poor Gohan, with his country ways and no sense of style, sigh. His Great Saiyaman costume looks like Ant-Man and Robocop got a little rowdy.

I like Videl's storyline, though, and Goten and Trunks quickly become a necessary element of the whole - even if the mysterious appearance of Goten out of nowhere seems somewhat artificial, as if Toriyama just felt he needed some small kids around (and he's right about that, he does! After all, the best DB is the original DB with kid Goku :D)

I've never been a huge fan of The Great Saiyaman but this whole intermission is a nice respite from all the chaos Cell brought to the world. It also reintroduces the Tenka'ichi Budōkai while establishing every character's new life, from relationships to newborns.

Previously on Dragon Ball Z

(I) Goku died in the process of destroying Cell but sadly it was all in vain.

(II) Gohan on the other hand found a new level of power and was able to destroy Cell and rid him permanently.

(III) Trunks goes back to the future and is able to destroy the androids, kill Cell and restore peace to the galaxy.

That is what you missed on Dragon Ball Z!

For some who read this volume could be pretty upset how this was just pure comedic chapter of Dragon Ball Z without any deadly battles and action except for Gohan's life. Goku is dead so now the family and the rest of the gang are trying to move on. Since there hasn't been an attack on Earth, Gohan has been lacking in his training and now wants to attend high school as a normal teenager.

No one on Earth knows who killed Cell but they believe it is Hercules who is absolutely pathetic. What I disliked immediately was how the humans of this fictional world could careless about how these evil villain have attacked their world which showcases that there are species that are outside of humankind.

I understand how this may be one of the weakest storylines but for me this felt like a mini break from the average fighting in this series. I love every story arc that Akira Toriyama has done for Dragon Ball Z but I believe if we don't take a pause of the fighting it becomes overrated and not very original when it comes to the villains and the whole world is about to end every time.

I love Gohan and how he has in many ways grown up and I thought that by being a Saiyan doing incredible things would be suffice and showcase high self-esteem. Apparently I was wrong and I didn't want Gohan to try to fit in with humans because it makes me feel like this characters become ordinary and lose the specialness of their abilities. I read stories to escape into a fantasy world and for me it felt like this because an episode of every teenage show where one outsider tries to fight in with the average teenager.

We get to meet Hercules daughter and she is trying to follow her father's footstep and become the world's greatest hero but I could actually careless about her. I love her interaction with Gohan and clearly I see that they will definitely become a love interest later. The great thing about this volume is for the first half we get an ordinary storyline and then the last half is when the action starts.

Word gets around that Goku is going to fight in the Tenkaichi Budokai tournament and immediately all hell is going to break loose. Vegeta finally wants to kick Goku ass after all these years of waiting and because Goku is going to come back for a day everyone starts training including Goten who is Goku's second son who was born after he dies.

The ending of the volume is the gang fighting the different rounds to secure a spot in the finals and I love how they are all back together even though a lot of the adults are way older now. My favorite part is at the tournament, the man who is the announcer of the event is always the same guy and when he sees Goku and everyone he is happy and grateful that they have come back and will showcase one of the best moments of the tournament.

Will Goku beat Vegeta? Will Gohan showcase his true talent? Or Will a new evil come to the forefront? Stay tune for another episode of Dragon Ball Z...

Wow. This feels SO WEIRD. In many ways this feels like a jump from when Dragon Ball ended and then turned into Dragon Ball Z. Gohan is all grown, has a little brother, and we're back to tournament fighting instead of some big bad. I'm sure there will be some unexpected contestant that enters and we'll have to see who that ends up being. If I'm wrong I'll try and remember to report back.

I absolutely cannot stand Hercule, which is the point of this doofus, but the introduction of his daughter, Videl, is awesome. She is a fun character and her interations with Gohan are especially cool. I have no idea if they are going to become a couple, but the way the Toriyama finds these uniquely cool characters that mesh well with Goku (with Chi Chi) and Gohan is really cool. Because if I'm being honest, they are kinda dunderheads, but they somehow just go so well with the women they are paired with and I love it.

I am tired and weary of the tournaments though. Tournaments and big bads to fight. Throughout the whole series. It's fun and easy to go through, but I wish that we could get a little more fleshed out character develpment. There is some dispersed here and there for sure, I'm not trying to say there is none, but just cycling through 2 different types of plot devices is getting a little tired at this point.

I do not know why, but this book took me much longer than the other books in this series.

It was not hitting as much as the other books. Maybe its just setting up big plots, so its a little boring.

Gohan is a fun character and is cool to see him in a different world than what he is used to. Vegeta’s remarks on how easy it seems for people to become super saiyan is very accurate since Goten and Trunks seem to just kind of achieve it with no effort.

This volume was a total slap in the face. Gohan is my favorite character in the franchise, and even though he’s always been portrayed as a reluctant fighter, he never backed down. This volume was the most blatant example of character assasination I’ve ever seen. They turned my boy into a complete clown. The Great Saiyaman was one of the stupidest and most boring story beats in the franchise. It just seems so pointless, especially since this comes right after Gohan’s badass victory over Cell. This isn’t even my biggest issue with the volume. Ever since Super Saiyan was first mentioned, it was hyped as the most elite thing. When Goku proved the legend true on Namek, it was the peak of the series for me. It was epic to see the legend manhandle Frieza. Subsequent transformations were underwhelming in my opinion, but Future Trunks, Vegeta, and Gohan all earned the transformation. Goten and Kid Trunks just ruin it. The legendary transformation was turned into a child’s plaything. I cannot think of a greater disrespect to the readers. Furthermore, the arc was completely underwhelming. Dragon Ball can have good training arcs, but this one was so lame, which I chalk up to the focus on Videl. The emotional impact of the volume also fell flat, but I personally think this is a problem across the manga, which is handled much better in the anime. Goku’s return to Earth is emotional for one page. That’s it. It’s immediately ruined by Goku casually dismissing the son he left behind and the one he never met. The only thing saving this volume from one star is Gohan and Videl’s interactions. This volume solidifies the idea that Z peaked at the Frieza arc and has been getting progressively worse since then.

For as boring as this section of the story was in the anime, I actually really enjoyed this volume of the manga. Throughout my reading of this series, I've really enjoyed seeing what our characters do after dealing with the current universal threat; whether that be Vegeta, Freeza, the Androids, or Cell. This time is no different, as we get a fun look at our characters during peace time. Gohan is trying to be an inconspicuous highschool student, while still preventing crime in the surrounding city, Vegeta and young Trunks are training (as is Goten, Goku's youngest son), Dende is the new Kami, the world still thinks Hercule defeated Cell and saved the Earth.. it is an interesting time. And with the next Strongest Under the Heavens tournament around the corner, its looking to be a fun few volumes ahead.

This is probably the most fun volume of the series. I love Gohan taking the protagonist role for this arc. His dynamic with Videl is great, and seeing the return to Budokai is a really cool backdrop to all these interactions.

The first half of this book is a drag. It does not even remotely resemble Dragon Ball to be honest. Taking a little detour is fine, especially post-time skip, but this felt too far removed from everything and really didn’t work for me.

That is, until talks start of the official return of the Tenkaichi Budokai. From here on it’s just a really fun return to the series as we meet up with everyone again, learn a bit of what they have been up to, and meet some new faces (all of which I surprisingly like). I especially like Videl who is a fun outside perspective that also gives great chemistry with Gohan. Goten and Trunks also have a fun little relationship that I look forward to exploring as they hopefully become bigger players in the story. Android 18 is probably my favourite returning character introduction as this feels like the beginning of a great arc for her.

For the most part, very little actually happens in this volume, but I’m really ok with that because as soon as it starts getting entertaining it remains as such and I’m just looking forward to another classic tournament with all these characters now insanely overpowered.

I will say though, that Super Saiyan already doesn’t feel particularly special. How do these 2 kids already possess the ability to transform? But I do hope this development is explored more as Vegeta asks the same question.

Out of all the saga’s I knew the absolute least about Buu so I’m intrigued how it will evolve going forward and how the new villain will enter the story.

Also this features perhaps Piccolo’s best dialogue yet:

“Get away from me, man. Piccolo IS green”

VERDICT: 7/10

This volume is the start of season 7 of the anime. It's been 7 years since the reign of Cell's terror and the world has known peace. Gohan is a teenager now and attending Orange Star High, but old habits die hard and he can't help jumping in at the first sign of trouble. He gets nicknamed the Golden Warrior by the townies. School is hard for Gohan just because he doesn't know how to act "normal", or how to feel about Videl, a tough girl in class who happens to be Hercule's daughter. Because he just can't resist helping out, Gohan gets a disguise and now crusades as the Great Saiyaman...but is discovered by Videl. She blackmails him into agreeing to teach her to fly. There's also the revelation that Chichi had another son with Goku in his absence, Goten...who looks exactly like Goku. He can already turn into a super saiyan, is very strong, and has no trouble flying. Trunks too has obtain super saiyan powers at the age of 8. The news of the revival of the Strongest Under the Heaven is revealed and the Z-Warriors all agree to reunite and compete...Goku is even going to be given special permission to come back to Earth for a full 24 hours!

Season 7 is the season I started watching DBZ...so it's always going to have a special place in my heart. However, after the adrenaline rush of the last saga, this volume was super lackluster. Pulling on the humor that was popular in Dragon Ball, it didn't feel the same here and made for an awkward, misguided volume. It did set up some fun plots though!

Despite myself not interested in Dragon Ball Z I do have a large amount of respect for the franchise.

As I said before in my review of Dragon Ball, this kickstarted the trends for later Shonen manga and that's something to admire about the entire Dragon Ball series. Shonen manga series have taken elements from the Dragon Ball series and use it for inspiration for their own work like battles, art, character design, and plot. I feel like I was a bit too old when I was first introduced to the starters of Shounen and Shojo. Dragon Ball and Sailor Moon were introduced to me a bit too late after I had started reading & watching series like InuYasha, Ouran High School Host Club, Death Note, Fullmetal Alchemist, and Code Geass.

Again, I still think it's an admirable franchise despite my personal feelings towards it. (I don't hate it but I didn't love it either) It's extremely popular worldwide and for the anime to still be watched and loved to this very day I think that says a lot about it. There are many things to like and admire about it because of the legacy that it brought with its creation.

While I don't love Dragon Ball Z, it has done a lot for a very popular art form and will continue to be great and loved for years to come.

Time jump!!! I don't know exactly how many years have passed, but it has been a few! The way this book opens is the world moved on and forgot about Goku...and for some reason it hits me harder than I thought it would...because well, that's truly how the world is...no matter what momentous moment happened...as time goes on the world seems to forget just how great of an impact certain things had on it. This book might not be the original time jump story...but it sure feels like one of the elder statesmen in the manga community if it isn't. In this chapter after all these years Goku is granted a return to earth for one day! Gohan is a teenager now and there are a bunch of new individuals that are showing their grit! This is a fun book that opens what will be the final big arc of the Dragon Ball Z story. The art is still improving but I think one of the features people take for granted is the crisp line art that Akira Toriyama has been producing for so long. It is mesmerizing and such a joy. This volume starts on moving past Goku being the main character and has put Gohan at the center stage. Definitely a fun installment and a different flavor of the world then has previously been the spotlight in this legendary series.

After good twenty volumes of aliens and crazy scifi action it's hard to imagine that this stuff was not what Dragon Ball was always about in the first place, and now that Akira Toriyama's shaking things up again, for newer readers - anime viewers - it can come across as unexpected and jarring. But for those that've been on board since the very beginning, like myself, this volume felt like a throwback, maybe even a return to form.

And it could have worked, too! Take the familiar cast into the direction of a more comical superhero parody, with crooks and robbers and later, perhaps, supervillains. Brighter tone and more comedy than what we've had in a long time. A brand new protagonist, one that we've gotten to know and love for years and has been set up as the new main character for that entire time, now finally taking the reins into a bold new future.

It really is a shame it wouldn't stick. Gohan got barely half a volume before things start to creep back into how they used to be. True, the World Martial Arts Tournament is in itself another throwback, but...

I love the everyday feel of this one. Seeing Gohan live the slow life in high school makes me so happy, something about him playing baseball cracks me up. I love his relationship with Videl and I love that Hercule has a spotlight. Still such a funny character.

I don’t know that I love Goten and Trunks as baby Super Saiyans, but at the same time, they add such a kinetic and childlike wonder to the pages. A wonder that has been missing for a long time now. Goten really mirrors Kid Goku in my head, and it’s nice that he has his own rival. It’s great seeing Vegeta father his son, even if he’s doing a bad job. It’s great seeing Gohan be a big brother. Idk, I just love how down to earth this one is. And we’re going back to the Tenkaichi? Yay!

I just feel like this volume has such a great understanding of character and I don’t mind the pace at all. Just a perfect interlude before it gets ridiculous.

I just finished reading Dragon Ball Z Vol.20: The new Generation a fiction book by Akira Toriyama. This volume continues the story after Goku died. It takes place many years later and it follows Gohan going to high school but still tries to be a hero using his Saiyan powers he fights in a tournament of power with his Goku as well (He came to earth for a day from Heaven to fight in the tournament). I really loved this book because I get to see the continuation of the story without Goku the fighting is great and I love to see all the characters after all of the Cell Saga happened. I would recommend this book to people who are interested in manga or the Dragon Ball Z Anime. I hope you loved Vol 20 as much as I did.

I gave the story fourstars because of the amazing drawing the awesome story plot etc. as an new adventure begins as there is an the best in the heavens tournament that introduce new characters Years after the battle with Cell, the Earth has forgotten about the existence of the super warriors, and Gohan is living the life of a mild- mannered high school student. Mild-mannered until evil strikes, that is...and the world needs the power of the Great Saiyaman! As Gohan's high school classmates ponder the similarity between their classmate and the masked crime fighter, i really enjoyed this manga and i can't wait to read the other ones on my spare time.
